Rick Santelli Fired Up: ‘If It Wasn’t for the Tea Party We’d Be Rated Triple-B’

Rick Santelli — the man whose speech on stimulus and bailouts in February 2009 is credited with helping launch the Tea Party — was fired up in this morning about the lack of leadership in the White House and all the political wrangling around what is really a simple problem- the government spends too much money.
During the CNBC segment, Santelli ripped into the “blame Bush, blame the sun” culture currently on display in the White House. He said it’s clear “we all know deep inside no country is the same it was five years ago,” and as for stocks going down, “we’re already Ralph Cramden on thin ice, now an infant’s jumped onto our shoulders.”
More than anything else, Santelli was livid about the political accusations that the Tea Party is to blame for the U.S. credit downgrade. Quite to the Contrary, Santelli said, “If it wasn’t for the Tea Party, we’d have been rated triple B.”

Misery/aggravation shortened to fit
Your friend, George Bush, wrecks your car. It’s heavily damaged but fixable. After narrowing down mechanics, you’re have two. One assures you he is more than able to repair your car. He gives an estimate and date for repair, you choose him. You later call to check on your car and are informed he underestimated the damage, it will be longer and more money. You give him the benefit of the doubt. You prepare to pay because your friend deserted you.
Months pass, you call to check on your car. He again tells you he underestimated the damaged and the cost. Frustrated you ask, why I wasn’t told sooner. He says, “Don’t blame me; I didn’t wreck your car”. Due to his audacity, you go in for a face to face. You find not only have no repairs been made, but due to his incompetence, your car is actually in worse shape. Now, you’re irate and demanding answers.
He says any blame should be directed at your friend who wrecked the car and any complaints you have against his service are because you’re a racist. You realize he is in over his head but have no other choice. You just “hope” the situation “changes.”
Next time you go to check on your car, the mechanic calls the local news complaining of a racist customer who is harassing him. You explain to the news you know whose fault it was, but the mechanic was picked because he said he could fix your car. They still portray you as a racist. What d

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 8:44pmAwesome analogy SpeckChaser. But I have the prequel! Before wrecking the car, one mechanic told him that he needed to work on the car and needed to follow manufacturers “regulations” on care maintenance. The mechanic said, for example, that he should have his brake pads replaced. But Bush said that was silly, the brakes are working just fine and that would cost me money. My car is fine. The mechanic said you need to change your oil but Bush said that costs me money and I’m not doing it, the car is fine. I’ll have even more money in my fat wallet. And so on, with the transmission and the rest of the car. Bush felt like any money spent to keep the car in good running condition was taking money out of his wallet and that of his rich family.
So, and here is where your analogy comes in, he wrecks the car, causes untold human suffering and damage to the car, and the engine and transmission are next to worthless.
And then the Tea Party comes in and says, “Bush was right. Let’s do the exact same thing again! The exact same thing! Because we like what Bush said about keeping money in our pocket and know what Bush did was right, let’s double down and do it again. This time it will work!”

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 9:09pm@JZS-Do not take this as sarcasm. I have a problem with typing my tone of voice.
I think you just proved my point, if what you are implying is that problems are too great for Obama to fix and he is indeed not the right guy for the job. For arguments sake, let’s say every single problem in the country is George Bush’s fault; I disagree, but let’s go with it. Compare what Obama inherited vs. what Reagan inherited. By every economic indicator I am aware of, correct me if I’m wrong (I know you will), Reagan was handed a much worse feces sandwich in the form of Inflation, unemployment, and Interest rates for examples.
Unless I have the facts wrong on who was handed the worst situation, the next question should be, what did Reagan do to turn the economy around that Obama has not been able or willing to accomplish?
I am still trying to post my answer to your response from three days ago, for whatever reason the blaze has been selective in what it lets me post, will keep trying and hope you see this. Not trying to bombard you with question, just think you’re the only liberal here worth talking to.

Also, people forget that the first 6 or so years of Bush’s presidency had overall low unemployment and record setting economic growth. So not sure how the total abuse of the car analogy fits. Never the less, it still doesn’t change the fact that Obama campaigned on fixing it. We are years into his presidency now. Once again not sarcasm but, at what period of time do you think the burden of blame transfers from Bush to Obama?

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 10:27pmHello SPECHCHASER. No, I wasn’t bothered by any of your comments. I think you are genuine conservative rather than a knee-jerk conservative who thinks it’s patriotic to hate liberals (and there are the same type on both sides). Being conservative is a valid philosophical position to hold in my opinion – it’s a matter of values and opinions about economic policies.
But to your point. I‘m not an economist and so I’m not in a position to personally oppose your idea that Reagan inherited a worse economy than Obama “by every economic indicator you are aware of.” But that is news to me. You are the first person I heard saying that the “Great Recession” was not as great what Reagan faced. That’s your opinion, but I don’t know that any recognized economist shares that opinion with you. I’ve never heard that before.
Here’s what I know. Bush cut taxes in a big way. Not once but twice. I’d challenge you to show me how that helped the economy, either in terms of jobs or economic growth. Maybe you don’t believe the line that cutting taxes raises government revenue. I hope not. It sure didn’t when Bush cut taxes. The deficit ballooned, just as it did when Reagan cut taxes (he raised them many times after cutting them I’m sure you know). My example is Bush and his tax cuts and deregulation and increased government spending. It didn’t work. Let’s not do that again.

Your better at finding information. So if you find stats where inflation or other economic indicators were worse for Obama than Reagan, I will concede my point.
Bush spent to oblivion. I agree with SUPPLY SIDE that no tea partiers are advocating doing things just like bush. I hope you believe cutting taxes raises the revenue to the government, as can be backed up historically. But, I could have missed the economist touting the high taxes under carter as a great revenue stream for the government but I don’t know that any recognized economist that shares that opinion. I’ve never heard that before. Here is where you lose me on the logic side. Again, no sarcasm but, how can tax breaks for the “rich” be devastating to the economy and add to the deficit, while simultaneous tax cuts for the lower and middle class be good? I have a hard time understanding how 1 single idea can be terrible/great simultaneously. Also, if the argument is cuts add to the deficit, where is the cutoff? Why don’t they say, your tax rate is 35%. That leaves 65% of revenue we miss out on, so we’re adding 65% of your income to the deficit.
I do believe your smart enough to realize doubling revenue and triple spending, as Bush did compared to Clinton, is taking two steps forward and three back. Let’s say I give you a grand a week for “taxes,” you spend1500. You say, I need more to cover overspending, so I give you 2 grand a week, but then you spend 3. Did you revenue not in fac

Posted on August 9, 2011 at 12:08amThe Tea Party does not want a repeat of the Bush years, trust me! Let’s continue the analogy, even if what you say is right about Bush not wanting to spend the money to keep the car in good working order (altho I disagree, Bush knew how to spend money with the best of ‘em!), the Tea Party were the ones saying “Watch out, there’s a ditch there!” then he hits the ditch, the owner goes to the mechanic. The Tea Party are saying “before you hire that guy, get an estimate! Vet him, look at past jobs, find out who his employees are and are they trustworthy?” Car owner chooses to ignore the Tea Party and hires the guy anyway. After the first check up realizes the guy is in a mess, etc as stated above, and the Tea Party says “He’s ripping you off. You need to vet a second opinion” but again the owner ignores them. After the 2nd and 3rd time, with the Tea Party warning you do not give this guy another dime! He’s ripping you off!” The mechanic tells everyone to ignore the Tea Party, they’re just racist etc. so the car owner keeps giving him more and more money. Finally maxing out his CC, the bank says “Your not responsible with your money” and lowers his credit rating. Then both the mechanic says to the Tea Party “If you would have just kept your mouth shut he would have just kept paying me!“ and the owner says ”if you would have just kept your mouth shut the bank never would have noticed we maxed out our CC!”
Then the mechanic hands the Tea Party the bill.

In response to your question, “Again, no sarcasm but, how can tax breaks for the “rich” be devastating to the economy and add to the deficit, while simultaneous tax cuts for the lower and middle class be good?”
The Obama administration has been counting on the taxes on the rich, all along. It makes sense to me, if you are counting on a certain income (taxes on the rich) and believe you will get what you want (to the point that you spend the money before getting it) when that money doesn’t come in, it would be devastating for the economy and would definitely add to the deficit.

Posted on August 9, 2011 at 9:55amCongress and the White House agreed to spend over $2 trillion before 2013 and make cuts of about $100 billion each year by 2023. The only thing historic about that is its lack of economic and fiscal stewardship. Fiscal conservatives believe the government has grown beyond the ability of the American citizens to pay for it. So they are saying no more tax increases. They are saying no more increases in spending. The fiscal liberals believe that rich people should pay their fair share, so an increase in their taxes should take care of the problem. There are not enough rich people to take care of a $14 trillion debt, even if a tax increase were considered a fair and reasonable thing to do.
Report Post »The impact on America and the world of these irresponsible actions and lack of leadership (the president continuously accepts no blame for his own policies, but points fingers at everyone else) will be devastating. Interest rates will go higher. Jobs will be fewer. Money will be scarcer. People will be stressed and depressed. People will be looking for answers. And the answer is found in those who know Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” This is not a time to retract from the events around us, but rather to reach out in the power of the Holy Spirit, with love for one another, even lovingkindness, and wisely demonstrate the solutions to life according to the Word of God.

Posted on August 9, 2011 at 9:49pmHey SPECKCHASER. First things first. To your comment that “I’m better at finding information” and that I should find information to disprove your claim, no dice. Maybe Limbaugh said that, but I’ve never heard any economist say that. Sorry, it’s not my job to disprove any statement that comes, for all I can tell, out of thin air. Perhaps, however, you’d like support the idea that the “Great Recession” in not as bad as what Reagan inherited.
Perhaps also to support the idea that cutting taxes increases revenue. That’s never happened, no matter how many times you’ve heard that is a fact from pundits. The deficit at least doubled under Reagan (who raised taxes to try to get that under control) and ballooned even more under Bush. Cutting taxes does what it’s designed to do: it makes rich people richer. It didn’t increase job creation or national productivity under Bush or under any other President. And it always has increased the deficit.
To your claim that “6 or so years of Bush’s presidency had overall low unemployment and record setting economic growth.” Now Speck, you just made that up out of thin air. Here’s a graph for you:

Bush might have been conservative where tax cuts and some social issues were concerned but his out of control spending, his support of the patriot act, and support for the bailouts damn him as being about as economically progressive as they come. He might be a great guy, and he was, in my opinion, better than the democrats he ran against (I can’t believe Kerry even tried), but only slightly.
@JZS This is a pretty puerile argument. Bush was not the economic genius we’d all have desired him to be, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Obama has done in two years what took Bush closer to three or four and seemingly has no intention of stopping his progress further down that road.
As far as sound economic principles where the debt is concerned, one has only to look back as far as the latter 1990s where Clinton was penned in by an economically conservative congress which was largely responsible for the national surplus Bill so emphatically is given credit for. If we want to get back to that we have to start following those principles.

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 10:40amFixing the financial crisis of the U.S. government is a totally achievable task. First, let’s start with the fixes necessary to get the U.S. government back to fiscal sanity. Here is a brief and do-able list from leaders across the nation:
1. Move to a two-year budget process instead of the current annual budget.
2. Freeze ALL federal spending increases across the board immediately.
3. Roll back all federal spending to 2009 levels.
4. Freeze all non-military federal hiring immediately.
5. Stop all implementation on the Federal Health Care takeover immediately.
6. Pass a balanced budget Constitutional Amendment with an effective date of 2014 to give the feds and state governments time to make adjustments.
7. Roll all educational spending back to the states and local communities and eliminate the federal role in funding education. (The people who don’t like their schools can fix them at the state and local level.)
8. Pass an energy bill that takes the shackles off of U.S. energy resources including coal, nuclear, oil refineries and in particular shale oil and gas reserves.
This list could go on but the point is clear. America can get her house in order but only IF we take one critical step first: We must keep working to send better people to Washington, D.C.
History proves over and again that great victories are always the result of small groups of real people who refuse to surrender the truth. The Bible tells us that when God called Abraham “he was

OR do you take away her credit cards and the keys to the car and put her on probabtion with the threat of divorce…
Why is it the TEA Party’s fault and WHY do the American people have to pony up more of our personal money to allow them to spend money in a fashion WE do not approve of????

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 7:28pmencinom your statement is incorrect they said 4trill in cuts or/and revenue. There should be cuts only. Stop spreading the lie of higher taxes = more revenue. regardless of tax rate the average revenue has been between 16-18% of gdp for 60+years. even bush tax cuts end up falling into that catagory. The problem is strictly spending. If the government revenue is incabable of exceeding 16-18%gdp then they should not be spend as much money as they are wich means they need to downsize the govermnent massivily. current outlays of government spending is 25-26%of gdp(this year) they need a 8-10% gdp spending cut. If the gdp begins to contract it make the problem significantly worse. the signs a possible gdp contraction could start happening if not already.

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 10:56pm@ENCIMON Sounds like you think Increasing Revenue means increasing taxes. S&P called for increasing revenue (as well as spending cuts), that is true – but funny thing is….increasing taxes often leads to a decrease in revenue overall. There are many ways to increase revenue….for starters they could ditch a few of the 600 new regulations and red tape they placed on businesses in July alone.
They could ditch the new regulation placed on food manufacturers requiring that nutritional information be placed on the front of the package (because obviously having to turn the package around is causing obesity), so that companies wouldn’t have to spend millions retooling their packaging and could perhaps manage to employ (or keep employed) more taxpayers – that would increase revenue.
They could stop fighting the COOL law (Country of origin Labelling) that was signed in 2002 – which would allow Americans to choose American made/grown food – boosting sales countrywide. That would increase revenue on the state & federal level.
They could let water flow to farms in California again instead of saving a 2″ Smelt from perceived danger (turns out the move really hasn’t boosted smelt populations) saving farms, putting thousands of people back to work and possibly keep food shortages and resulting food inflation at bay – or at least lesson the impact….that would increase revenue.
But like the President when you hear “increase revenue” all you can think of is “increase

The Admin and Kerry is saying…
No, keep all of those services and in fact, tell your wife to run out and buy more shoes…. you just need to get a 2nd job! That is the Home equivalent to what they are saying in the WH… they want to keep on spending, no cuts, lets just bring in more revenue…. more revenue doesn’t fix ANYTHING, it just gives the Federal Govt more money to spend MORE, the government needs to go on a crash diet and lose the fat — Tell Michele Obama that she needs to tell Timmy Geithner to eat his treasury department version of carrots and put down the fatty piece of pork….
If we can cut spending in our homes at the kitchen table, then the WH can cut spending on all of the lavish freebies its giving away, keep all essential needs going, pay the debt and bring out costs and debt down… that is it, bottom line
