Rick Santorum Reacts to Obama Allowing Daughter to Vacation in Mexico: ‘Set an Example’

On Tuesday’s Glenn Beck program, Rick Santorum responded to the news that the president allowed his 13-year-old daughter, Malia, to vacation in Mexico, despite a recent State Department travel warning for the country. According to Santorum, the president should be leading by example.

“What I would say is that the president’s actions should reflect what his administration is saying,” Santorum told Beck. “If the administration is saying that it’s not safe to have people down there, then just because you can send 25 Secret Service agents doesn’t mean you should do it. You should set an example. I think that‘s what president’s do. They set an example. And when the government is saying this is not safe, then you don’t set the example by sending your kids down there.”

He also noted that he wasn‘t being critical of the president’s daughter, but rather referencing the president’s “higher duty.” You can listen below:

“[C]rime and violence are serious problems throughout the country and can occur anywhere,” the travel warning reads. “U.S. citizens have fallen victim to TCO activity, including homicide, gun battles, kidnapping, carjacking and highway robbery.” [Emphasis added]

Luckily, no specific warning was issued for the exact area (Oaxaca) Malia is said to be visiting. However, there have been concerns about that area in the past.

      @TeaPartyForRomney – why is it that Romney’s past of health care mandates and being the gov of the most liberal state in the union supposed to be pushed aside but you trot out “Out of context” maligning against Santorum? Santorum is a thousand times more a conservative than Mitt that has to keep saying over and over again as if it is supposed to paint over his record “I am TOO a conservative. Don’t look at my history just listen to my words.” Mitt who says whatever the audience wants to hear to get their vote. At least Rick is honest and stands by what he believes and we won’t be seeing him do the soupy shuffle when elected. And what kind of a name is Mitt anyway? Is it from Michigan being the Mitten? Is that his Full first name? Mitten? And how many “home states” does he have now? He is a full fledged politician and it is sickening that he is duping so many voters.

      Because Santorum is distorting Romney’s plan, here is a video that accurately goes through the bill, fully sourced and shows how Romney did try to set up a very conservative system to deregulate the insurance industry.       2) You campaign as someone that can create jobs just like he did when he was at Bain.
      3) You fight as someone tough on crime while the state’s crime numbers skyrocket.
      4) You fight as someone that will turn around corruption when Beacon Hill(Massachusetts) was considered the most corrupt government in the country.

      THAT IS HOW YOU CAN BECOME GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS ON CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES.

      COMPARED TO SANTORUM ROMNEY WOULD:
      1) Romney is more of a fiscal conservative than Gingrich and Santorum.
      2) Romney doesn’t wear it on his sleeves but he would come close to Santorum on Social Conservatism.
      3) Romney and Santorum are fairly the same on the Defense Conservative Issues.

      With this Romney would win as a Conservative.

      I don’t know, does anyone think it is weird that ANYONE would allow their 13 year old child go away with 12 of their friends for vacation? I am sure that if others did that we would have child protective services at our house. Well I guess having 2 secret service per child makes things better. We are such suckers, I guess we should be thankful that she did not take the entire school on us.

      Even with a security teem?
      This is a good example of his blind short sited stupidity!
      What if she makes a bad decision and things get out of control?
      Is she old enough to be responsible or are you going to blame the security detail?
      I would say the decision to let her go was wrong.

    There are no warnings for Oaxaca. Just because you parse some travel warnings for different areas, it doesn’t mean the whole country is dangerous. In my line of work, I must be aware of travel warnings and I’d be perfectly cleared to travel to Oaxaca. This is a non-issue.

      What parent in their right mind would send their child to Mexico at THIRTEEN…I realize that she has security…but THIRTEEN…I guess it just goes to show you the only parent that is dumb enough or “rich” enough to send their child to vacation in Mexico at THIRTEEN, would be the president of the United States on our dime..I have a thirteen year old and I could care less how many secret service agents were around to protect her…she’s not vacationing anywhere without her family….but then dad‘s too busy screwing us over and mom’s doing letterman…there you go!

This guy should be arrested for child endangerment, child abuse, and being an unfit parent, along with his wife! What I also would like to know is why did the parents of those other kids let them go also? Those kids are in just as much danger as the Pres. daughter! A sad human, wouldn’t want to be a family member of yours, if you have any. I would not care where is daughter vacationed, were it not for the issues discussed, going to Mexico, which is less than safe, and having her go to a place that required extensive security on the taxpayers dime. Obama has not shown leadership, or concern for setting fiscal expenditure examples while so many are doing without. Wisdom doesn‘t seem to be Obama’s long suit.

    Why does no one point out that even if Mexico was safe they are outsourcing hotel and tourism dollars to another country when that money could be spent here to boost our bad economy.       And regardless of if the school planned it she is Obama’s kid and so him and his wife had every right to have some input into where the school planned to go. Yes this is my soap box but if my daughters school was planning a trip, and I have a daughter about this age, I would be involved in suggesting a different location for the same reason I listed above.

I never went on a Spring Break to a foreign country heck I never went anywhere on Spring Break at that age.       The thing is, Oaxaca isn’t a war zone, so your comment doesn’t make sense. Blindly accepting all of Glenn Beck’s words as truth do not count as “doing your own homework”.

    I can think of plenty of reasons why I wouldn’t want my 13 yo daughter to go anywhere…Florida, Mexico, the Jersey Shore for spring break.
    But once this foolish decision was made it behooves us to consider the safety of the child. Killing the public story is a good idea. We can certainly criticize the wisdom and economic consequences when she is safely back home at the end of the trip. There are irrational people in this world who wish us harm and would enjoy the coup of getting to the President’s daughter. I am willing to delay my evaluation of this foolishness until then.

    Everyone seems to be missing the big picture.
    Mexico and Mexican products should be boycotted by all Americans.
    All this waste of a country exports are drugs, crime, disease and our biggest problem today, illegal aliens.
    By sending his daughter to vacation in Mexico, Obama is once ignoring a major problem.
    Ben Franklin once said , “Tall fences make the best neighbors”.
    In Mexico’s case, armed drones make the best neighbors.

      If he felt the need to send her away on a spring break vacation without her parents, there are plenty of places in the USA that would be wonderful places to visit. He and his family should only vacation in American while he is president, to help our economy and promote USA tourism.

    So how much does it cost to send 25 secret service agents to mexico to provide security for Malia. Obumer should be reimbursing the treasury. Maybe he could have Bill maher pay for it.

    Rick Santorum is absolutely correct. I traveled to Florida on business last week and considered taking my 13 year old son, but I didn’t. The reasons: I didn’t want to leave him unattended at the hotel pool while I was in a conference (I don’t have 25 secret service agents for one kid) and I could not really afford his airfare anyway. I don’t have access to free planes.
    Why do they feel it necessary to allow a 13 year old to go on a spring break trip without them? 13?? These sorts of trips are usually for high school or college kids.
    This shows the country just how out of touch with reality the Obama’s are and someone told them they better tell their state controlled media to yank the stories. Don‘t need the truth getting in the way of Obama’s campaign!
