Rick Santorum Projected Winner of Louisiana Primary

Rick Santorum Wins Louisiana Primary

(The Blaze/AP) — Rick Santorum is the winner of the Louisiana Republican presidential primary, defeating GOP front-runner Mitt Romney in yet another conservative Southern state.

Santorum is Romney’s chief challenger and a former Pennsylvania senator who has won previous contests in Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama.

The Louisiana victory was unlikely to change the overall dynamics of the race. Santorum still dramatically lags Romney – the former Massachusetts governor- in the hunt for delegate to the GOP’s summertime nominating convention. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia was far behind in the Louisiana vote count.

Exit polls from the Saturday primary found that voters were economy-focused, and strongly backed their candidate. Santorum secured his widest margins of victory over Mitt Romney among the conservatives and evangelicals who have lifted his campaign across the South.

“We’re still here. We’re still fighting. We still believe, as this race really shows,” Santorum told supporters in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The Louisiana victory gives Santorum bragging rights and at least nine more delegates. Neither candidate was in the state as Louisiana Republicans weighed in. Nor was former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was trailing in Louisiana. With half the precincts counted, Santorum had 49 percent to 26 percent for Romney. Gingrich was far back at 17 percent, followed by Ron Paul with 6 percent.

Romney took a rare day off Saturday, with no public events. Santorum spent the day campaigning in Pennsylvania and next-up Wisconsin, which votes April 3 and represents one of his last chances to beat Romney in a Midwestern state. Santorum told voters in Milwaukee that he expected their state to be “the turning point in this race.”

In an unmistakable jab at Romney, Santorum added: “Don’t make the mistake that Republicans made in 1976. Don’t nominate the moderate. When you do, we lose.” It was a reference to Ronald Reagan losing the 1976 Republican nomination to incumbent President Gerald Ford, and Democrat Jimmy Carter winning the White House. The next key fight comes April 3 in Wisconsin.

Romney’s campaign is airing TV ads in the state, and his super PAC allies have plowed more than $2 million into TV advertising there. Also voting April 3 are Maryland and the District of Columbia. There are 95 delegates combined at stake in the three contests.

Voters in New Orleans weigh in on what influenced their decision Saturday:

I’ve looked at the exit polling from a lot of states and romney always does well with the older people (65+). You could say old people are his ‘base’. Why do they support him? Here is my guess:

      1. “He looks like a nice young man”
      2. He speaks well (meaning, he reads teleprompter well)
      3. He wont touch my medicare and social security
      4. I liked his progressive father – George Romney
      5. I see him on the television and he calls me a lot
      6. He seems like the guys we normally nominate

      1) In 2002 Republicans were spending money stupidly fast. I changed my party affiliation cause of it. Romney was saying he is NOT in favor of spending money irresponsibly NOT that he did not agree with Party Policies.
      2) Ever heard of the LINCOLN LOG REPUBLICANS? They too think we should reach out to gays. The Republican Party is a big tent party. We should reach out to all who have a common political belief in fiscal responsibility and individual freedom.
      3) Did not strap the dog to a roof. An Irish setter is a big dog and 7 people were in the car. Dog was inside a dog carrier with the opening toward the back. Crate tied to a roof rack. Much like tons of dogs are transported everyday via an airplane. Dog lived till he was 20 so I guess it did not bother him. THIS IS WAY BEFORE MINI VANS OR SUV’s. This was back when large families had a station wagon. Complaining about this story shows how lame some people are about Romney. That’s it? That’s all you got??

I think it is time that we all get behind Santorum.. Romney needs to drop out of the race….

Look at this video.. Rick Santorum has the courage to produce this video…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DApjHZq9o7M

Romney can only produce videos against Republicans… Romney would be happy to produce a video like this if it was against Gingrich or Santorum, Bachmann Cain, Perry… etc.

      Romney is a crustacean… NO SPINE….. Romney can’t even call Obama a Socialist.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqaWzpE1QFU

As a matter of fact Romney nearly bankrupted Massachusetts with his big Government schemes.
The reason he did not want to identify with The Republican Party was because, even under George W. they were too Conservative for him. Romney is quite literally the most PERFECT example of a RINO (Republican in name only) that I have ever witnessed. If you look up RINO in the dictionary you see Romney’s picture.

Uh, WE LIKE ROMNEY because he is not Bitter, vindictive, Catty, Shallow, or a Pretend “great guy”. We don’t like Santorum because he is thin-skinned, whiny, talks too much, doesn’t have the inner strength that ROMNEY shows. We were not always for ROMNEY, but given that Newt lived his life with no thought of self-discipline (until – maybe 4 months ago) and most of the rest were just not ready or ambitious interlopers like Michelle Bachmann who tried to co-opt the TEA party as her own devise (no it wasn’t). ROMNEY can take the punches, remain a gentleman, has the business and WINNING experience to turn this around…to stop Obama and drive the demons out of the WH.

Santorum just shoots off his mouth. The first parts of his speeches are good…then he just goes on and on and his ego gets in the way. WE have one of those now. We want ROMNEY to clean up the mess and set it right like he did the Olympics; like he did in Massachusetts and with a totally DEM constituency and legislature.

We know Paul has already sold out to Romney, has Newt (we know he would not sell out, he supports Pelosi and Gore) Funny how with a win in a lib state skewed state like Illinois the the “door has been shut” and that everyone else should drop out. BTW – NYTimes has a piece revealing what is coming. Put that together with the slam from Axelrod about mormon women menstruation issues and you see the reelection of Obama. There are a lot of gays out there, who are fiscally; and national security wise Conservative, have served this country, and don’t like left-wing governance … And when you get Republican Conservatives coming out, sounding like they are straight out of the 50′s.. It makes Republicans look out of touch with modern society, intolerant, and just stupid.

As far as Rick Santorum winning… Wow what a shock, a social Conservative, all caps “Christian” uptight twit- wins in a southern state. NOT! lol Romney will win the southern states in the general election- because those very same people who voted for Santorum, and hate Romney, will vote for him because they hate Obama more. Bodwulf, If we counted the delegates the proper way, we would swee that Paul is second in delegates. When we get to the convention, we are going to see that no candidate has reached the 1144 delegate count. This will create a brokered convention, but because of new rules by the GOP, it is my understanding that it will be open. This means after the first round of votes not getting any candidate to that magical 1144 delegate number, the delegates will be freed to vote for anyuone they want, even someone who throws their hat into the ring at that time. Paul just may have 1144 supporters signed up as delegates from across the country as that has been our plan all along. In some primary contests, we have said we are for Romney in order to get delegate spots. One thing everyone knows about Paul supporters, they are loyal to the death. If he does end up with 1144 supporters as delegates, that second round of votes will make him the nominee. It will be a great day for America.

Stuck-in-Cal… I find it kind of funny how the maker of that video felt the need to bounce the dates around. Why not go in chronological order? Was it by chance to make it seem like he’s a flip flopper??

Mitt has always said he was a pro life governor that upheld Massachusetts law–which were pro choice.
In 2007, he then further enhanced his position, believing the laws were wrong.
That doesn’t sound much like flip flopping to me. It sounds more like he ran the state of Massachusetts being personally pro-life, but upholding Mass law to allow women the right to choose and only when he had a more clear vision did he realize abortion laws are bad.
This is old news and it keeps getting recyclyed like it’s something new.

Maybe you could enlighten us with some facts of how Romney broke the state he was governing by pushing through Romney care. It’s really easy to put someone down and forget the facts. The facts are that Romney is no more than a big government progressive buying his way to the losing position for the Republican party, just like McCain, and insuring the people will have no choice again in the coming election, just another progressive Romney or Obama. Thank you very much Newt and Paul for splitting off the vote to insure the progressives stay in control of the White house. Maybe the next tea party supporters will have to get the attention of of the elite politicians with a full scale revolution.

Romney it a global government candidate, groomed to appeal to all those who think it’s just the economy and any CEO can fix it. The TEA Party is not the moderate wing of the R’s. Conservatives are becoming like the Progressives, people who have taken two great words in the English vocabulary and made people afraid to use them, because you no longer know how you will be taken. I’ll keep saying it, the TEA Party has been co-opted. Who was the leader of the original TEA Party? Just a bunch of Indians that made a statement then went on to fight the battle, not one stands out. TEA Party lives in your heart, not in some self appointed leader. I’m hoping Santorum rejects the global ideas. Romney Won’t.

About Romney hate: For some, especially in the Deep South, they have been bombarded with anti-Mormon hate rhetoric for decades. When it comes from the pulpit it makes it doubly difficult to communicate with that part of the population who actually believe that trash. Add to that a real suspicion of anyone who is a “damned Yankee” and especially one from Boston, and there you have half the reasons. The rest likely is genuine concern over political positions.

You included Dr Paul in your remarks. as a Republican of the old school, Dr Paul’s world view is so foreign that I never took him seriously. We have a 20th century example in Neville Chamberlain as to what happens when we don’t hold monsters to account. We can’t deal with evil. We can‘t just allow it to put its evil hooks in a few weak nations then hope it won’t find us. Forty million dead between 1939 and 1945 prove that point.

The rest of the problems are just not supported such as the gold standard and hacking off one trillion dollars of the national budget in one felled swoop. That means another 1 million unemployed former Federal workers all at once. Reducing the budget is a process not an event. It has to be timed with a renewed economy which generates real jobs. Without that, which is Mitt Romney’s approach by the way, Obama is a show in for another four years. Paul’s ideas concerning the Fed are intriguing though.

Conservatives don‘t dislike Romney because he’s a Mormon. They dislike him because of:
      1. Romneycare. No explanation needed.
      2. When he was governor of Massachusetts, he signed into law a permanent Assault Weapons Ban. In that state, you can go to prison for owning the wrong kind of rifle.
      3. He believes in global warming, and has proposed the same kind of cap and trade scam for America that has already devastated economies all over Europe. And this same cap and trade scam has made a very small handful of international financiers extremely wealthy (including George Soros).
      4. He has an unpleasant habit of telling every group what he thinks they want to hear, which makes him come across as a complete phony.
      5. He flip-flopped on the immigration issue.

Like him or not, Mitt Romney is going to be the Republican nominee. It is going to happen. Even Newt has come around is saying so and that is coming from a man who would like nothing more than to see Mitt Romney ruined.

I think Rick knows that too but just has to wind down with as much momentum for the next race as he can generate. It won’t happen though. Marco Rubio will be asked to be VP and he will be the nominee in 2020. (Rick just made too many enemies this time.)

Look, I didn‘t insult Santorum or you and I don’t care for you accusing me of being a Democrat. I have never in my life been a member of the Democrat Party nor do I ever intend to. My family have been conservative Republicans for at least 4 generations. During the FDR administration, my family opposed him while the South lapped him up. I neither voted for Huckabee nor McCain in 2008 in the primaries, but was forced to vote for McCain in the general because of the same evangelicals who couldn’t vote for the conservative because he was a Mormon. Now these same people are telling me that I am the moderate establishment because I support Romney. Now THEY are going to lecture me about conservatism? Please.

Look, I listen to Rush Limbaugh regularly and love him. I subscribe to GBTV and listen to Glenn as often as I can. I am no progressive, and I don’t believe Romney is one either. Romney is a conservative who has had to be so in liberal territory and has done pretty well with it, which is partially why I can relate to him. I understand him. He has been tested.

When are you going to understand that I don’t hate Santorum? I at least will vote for Santorum if he is the nominee, which is more than can be said for a lot of commentators on this thread if Romney ends up the nominee. I do believe, however, that Romney will be the nominee and I am quite happy with it.

I think Santorum is a liar. For instance, he continues to use the etch-a-sketch comment to try to make Romney out to be someone who changes his policies on a whim just to win elections. What the Romney campaign was really referring to was their strategy, that they treat each primary or caucus individually and develop a new strategy depending on the demographics (as far as what ads to run, where to stump, etc…) Santorum knows that, and he is playing you all, knowing your tendency for knee-jerk reactions and small soundbites.

Romney has lived his life honorably, has kept his promises, been a successful capitalist, understands American capitalism and how it contrasts with European socialism, is faithful to his wife and religion, governed as a conservative, has fought for religious freedom, the unborn, and traditional marriage.

Santorum is a politician who simply plays on the emotions of the GOP electorate.

This one fact separates AMERICA from the rest of the world…and is the reason that people from all over the world want to live here. IT is CALLED FREEDOM. There are Far Right Nut Cases just like there are Far Left. The problem is the FAR LEFT also have the MSM and they want to destroy AMERICA…whereas the FAR RIGHT want to create what America is around the world. I’ll lean RIGHT, thankyouverymuch. gingrich staying in the race increases the chances of a presumptive nominee (see my post below). It isnt even about getting enough delegates – it is about perception and people throwing in the towel. For instance, it seems like once mitt gets to 800ish delegates, people will accept that he has it won and quit supporting their candidate. In 2008, republican voters gave it to McCain after florida – even though he was only sitting on 150 delegates.

Both Santorum and Gingrich insist that they are staying in the race all the way to the convention and that is exactly what I hope happens. When no candidate has the required 1144 delegates and we have a brokered convention and the first vote at the convention doesn’t select a nominee, the delegates are released from the pledged status assigned in the primaries and at that point Ron Pauls strategy will start to pay off. Paul will have a lot more delegates at the convention than people think. I suspect that regardless of how much support Ron Paul gets at the convention, the GOP will pull whatever shenanigans it has to, to make sure Paul is not the nominee.
At that point, after Paul has exhausted every attempt to work through the corruption of the two-party nomination process, he should run as either an independent or as the Constitution Party candidate.

Ron Paul is truly a Republican in the same sense that Thomas Jefferson was called a Republican (before it became a party). Unfortunately the Republican Party of today are not Jeffersonian Republicans, but big-government progressives who simply use the name Republican so that gullible voters can think that there are really two different parties. Anyone who looks at the R‘s and the D’s over the past several decades will see that the differences between them is very, very small.

In 1992 Ross Perot got 19% of the vote in the general election. I’m positive that Ron Paul, as a third party candidate will do much better than that. In fact if conservatives realize that the third party run by Paul virtually guarantees that Romney (the pre-ordained nominee before this primary ruse ever began) cannot possibly win in this three-way race and thus the ONLY two options are Paul and Obama, they will have to vote for Paul.

So no chance Ron Paul even sniffs 19% let alone go above it.

Fox News and many other partisan hacks have repeatedly tried to get him to promise that he wouldn’t (because they know for a fact that if he did it would virtually eliminate their guy), but he would only say that he’s “not planning to” or that he “doesn’t want to”. He never made a firm statement that he wouldn’t. Just watch. He has been do disrespected, marginalized, and outright cheated by the corrupt Republican Party, they deserve exactly what he’s going to do to them.

As far as getting the votes of the “indys and libs”, Ron Paul is the most popular candidate among independent voters and many liberals will gladly vote for Paul over Obama on the war issue alone. They know Obama talked a big game about getting out of wars but only got into more. Paul will actually bring the troops home. That might not sit well with you neocons, but it’s huge to a lot of independents and liberals. And of course the true traditional conservatives are already Ron Paul supporters because they care about the Constitution, sound money, and small government.

So when the general election realistically comes down to Paul vs. Obama – who are you going to vote for?

Rick is a good man! Mitt is a good man! HOWEVER, something that I have learned in this past 3 1/2 years (years that I have actively been following politics) is that the POTUS does not actually run the country. It is the men and women that a POTUS assigns, i.e foreign policy, economics etc. It does not matter that Mitt is the economy guy. I believe it is the character of the man who will speak for country and assign those who actually run the country that matters this election. Obama is just a puppet to his Admin. I don’t think that Rick or Mitt would be such push overs. They will lead and not just let others make the decisions. But I would vote Rick at this point! He seems less of a pushover from what I have seen.

Obama is just a figurehead, whoever is on the other end of the blackberry is calling the shots. I know Ricks beliefs are what are calling the shots in his life. I am just so leery of the press and the establishments support of Mitt. I mean there are progressives in the republican party, Who are they supporting and more importantly Why?

I don’t like any of them, but I do believe we need to put away the pettiness and come together or it will be BO’s for another 4 years.

Sure, Santorum won Louisiana. My mid-90′s mom said he would because so many Catholics in La. (my birth state) My first choice was Mr. Cain, then Newt and now, not a clue, don‘t like ’em at all.
My choice will be who ever wins the nomination, period, like it or don’t like it because I would never vote for another term for that man who has skrewed up America the worst of all of the Presidents to date.
Racism is the worst it’s ever been, that obamanation of health care will put ius in poor house before Obama does, and it will send grannie over the cliff for being too old and we can’t spend any more medical money on her. Mitt will win the nomination, and will be elected President of the United States of America.
He will also be re-elected in 2016. Ricky was expected to do well in this state, but from here on out Mitt will do VERY well, just as he has up until now. Most people do not want a porn-addict (Santorum) or a cheater (Newt) for president. They want someone who is faithful to his wife (unlike Newt), and who is consistent with his Faith (e.g., tithing 15% instead of Ricky’s 4%). They also do not want to live in a theocracy – neither did the Founding Fathers. Ricky will appeal to the evangelicals, but not to most Americans. Mitt does, and will win because of it.

good point. Goldwater won the republican primary and went up against LBJ in 1964. George Romney refused to endorse or support Goldwater because George Romney was more of a progressive in the party. Foreign policy aside, Goldwater stood for limited federal govt and more individual freedom.

yes santorum won the state but as long as gingrich is in this race – it doesnt matter. Santorum will walk away with about 12-13 delegates and romney will have about 8. However, if newt were not in the race – santorum would have got over 50% of the vote which means he would have got ALLLL the delegates. This is how romney has built his big lead. By only getting 30% of the vote in many states – he still walks away with a bunch of delegates even though his supporters make a minority of the voters.

Here is the proof that santorum would have got over 50% with gingrich not in this race….Santorum 59% and romney only 36%.

@JJ Coolay – What makes you think Romney is winning. Enlighten me? Media? False Numbers? What else you got for me? We know our delegates. You just wait until Tampa.

      @BAD

Sorry but unlike you I’ve never been on welfare or unemployment, nor am I a phoney like you that ‘CLAIMS’ to have been the military.

You try to talk a good game, but don’t.

Once a US citizen becomes a terrorist, in my book they give up all rights.

REALCONSERVATIVE. For the most part you are dealing with Ron Paul acolytes here. They are behind a guy who insults the Military every chance he gets, and who supports a traitor to our Military and country in the name of Pvt Bradley Manning. Most of the Ron Paul Military posers on here are just that… poser. And the one’s who served? Pretty much a band of disgruntled Adam Kokesh types who probably had their arses handed to them in the Military… along with walking papers.

Santorum is still in the race? I assumed he dropped out after he said Obama would be better than Romney.

he said the voters will look at romney and then obama and figure at least they know what obama will give them. He is right

your argument for mitt romney all along was that he is best to beat obama – so why dont you refute santorum’s claim instead of acting like a baby about it

Yeah, I thought he had dropped out and joined the Obama re-election campaign!!!

Well, since he’s not projected to win any of the remaining states, its still pretty much over for little Ricky. He’ll figure that out eventually. For now, he still likes the public attention he’s getting. Kinda sad, really.

      POL… you’ve LOST IT.
      Anyone is better than Romney?
How so sadly uninformed you are.
      Romney ran a successful business.
Romney saved the Salt Lake game from embarrassment.
Romney turned Massachusetts’ economic disaster into surplus.
      Your comments are pathetic.
