Rick Santorum Would Not Ask Weiner To Resign From Congress, But. . .

Most GOP House members, as well as a substantial number of Democrats (including Speaker Pelosi and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz) have called for Rep. Anthony Weiner to step down from his seat in Congress. What does former PA Senator and GOP Presidential candidate Rick Santorum think Weiner should do?

Simon Conway, the host of an afternoon radio show on News Radio 1040, was speaking with Mr. Santorum about the historically low, 9% approval rating of Congress, he asked candidate Santorum a direct question about Weiner resigning;

Candidate Santorum toes an interesting line in his answer. While expressing his personal opinion (the candidate claims that heĀ would resign if caught in a similar situation), Mr. Santorum recognizes that the Congress has a procedure in place for removal of members who violate their code of conduct.

    Rick Santorum was thinking of running for Prez.? Well Obama showed us you don’t need a spine to be President, but I thought we were looking for something a bit more manly that Obama, or this Santorum. Maybe Palin or Bachman. They seem to have more testosterone than these two.

    The rules are great. But they have been designed to get around. All congress has to do it what is right. I know that’s a lot to ask of those selfish twits, but i keep trying. My biggest problem is i have gotten to the point that those in congress that know what is right are afraid to act, so they talk. the ones that don’t know what is right, do as they please. we the people get the shaft.

    Give Rick a break! No matter how answered the question, he would lose eitherway. The Left Attack Mob would crucify him if he said he should step down and now the Right is attacking him. Rick Santorum is the closest Conservative and Tea Party supporter than you all know. He was our Pennsylvania Senator. He is conservative through and through. More conservative than Romney. Rick is no Rhino. I agree Weiner should have stepped down and but matter how Santorum answered this question he loses. The MOST IMPORTANT THING HERE IS, WE HAVE TO BEAT OBAMA!!! Don’t forget This.       I agree Angel….I always liked Santorum when he was in the Senate….plus, I couldn’t care less about Weiner. In my opinion at least 75% of congress haven’t lived up to there sworn oaths…focusing on the weiner man seems pretty silly.

    I see this as a potential problem. Since Rick Santorum is trying for President on the Republican side, you‘d think he’d take a real stand here. Guess not.

    Weiner’s actions are the kind of thing that make an ENTIRE PARTY look bad if left unchecked. That’s what the democrats do. Ted Kennedy, Charlie Rangel walking away from scandal and/or criminal acts with impunity, and still remaining in power.

    This is the kind of corruption that defines the Democratic party, and it’s lack of ethics.

    And now Rick Santorum wants to do the same thing to the Republican party? Not on my watch. When there’s wrongdoing in the party, the responsible member needs to GO. Santorum just took a walk on this issue. See Ya!

      Cold War Vet, Santorum said he would vote him out if Congress held hearings and if in Weiner’s shoes, he would resign. What more do you want? Rick took the position it is not his place to tell Weiner to leave and it is not. Rick is no longer in Congress and is not a constituent of Weiner’s. For him to tell Weiner to leave would not have any result at all except for the media to take it and run with it. Rick knows how the media plays the game. He took the high road with his answer so his campaign issues would not be overshadowed by Weinergate. I can almost bet you if Rick were in office, Weiner would know exactly where Rick thought he should go.

Thankfully, Iowans dig much deeper than sound bites when the decide who to vote for at the caucuses. The Weiner thing will play itself out. Rick Santorum calling for him to resign won’t make any difference on whether the weiner resigns.

      Do both of you guys realize Santorum was completely 100% complicit and supportive of the Bush Administration this entire time, including TARP. He does not have a moral compass and is weak. If he cannot stand up to corruption and wrongdoing with his own party, why would he ever stand up to them in terms of supporting the constitution? – Santorum is a RINO. I find it funny that most people can’t draw a distinction for someone who is supposedly having good moral character, but poor political character. Santorum would be Bush IV, Obama is Bush III. I can’t even draw one distinction . He is supposedly trying to cozy up to the tea party? Please, the guy is as big government as Mitt or Newt and is in the good ole boy Neocon club.

    He said what Weiner did was grievous enough that he personally would step down. Why must he go beyond that, do you doubt him? Rather than allowing himself to be inserted into the debate he’s leaving the process to those with ability to affect the situation. As a statesman should do.

      I agree 100% ONCEDARKNESS. I don‘t think commenters on this blog listened to all of Santorum’s interview. He is a very conservative man with commendable values and principles. I am impressed with him. I do want someone with experience and knowledge of how government is run. I don’t want any more inexperienced leaders running our government.

    When Israel was created, the international community planned for Jerusalem to remain divided, and never recognized it belonging solely to Israel.

    Most embassies are in Tel Aviv as a result. No president in the history of the US (since the creation of Israel) has stated Jerusalem to belong to Israel alone, or recognized it as the capital. Not Bush 1, Bush 2, not Ronny. None.

      This man needs to resign as well; while the Congress has procedures in place to remove those who do violate their standards – such as one who did not pay taxes for fifteen years (sarcasm intended) then they need to use them. The power entrusted to the Congress and the Administration, now and in the future means they need to be held to the same standards across the board, violate them and you are gone – resigned or terminated as a member of the government.

      All must be held to the same standards as the rest of us Americans are.

      Snow: while I was saddened that Obama signed that extension that is something that has been done every 6 months since 1995 by whoever is President at the time. Congress passed a bill ordering our consulate be moved from tel aviv to Jerusalem. But someone put in a clause allowing that to be suspended for 6month terms. So while I’m not defending Obama. Just another nail in his political coffin. Clinton and bush also did this twice every year.

Obama, and every other President, is fully within their lawful power to determine wherever they would like to place embassies, and it is Congress that is in the wrong here–if you don’t like it, change the law.

      What is wrong with how he handled this interview? So he holds the position that he says that he would resign if he was in their position instead of calling for them to directly resign. I don’t think it is a big deal and it is all semantics. Do you really think that he is supporting Weiner in any way but NOT directly calling for his resignation? Do you think that it would make a real difference if he did?

      I do agree that it seems very black and white in this case but it seems to me that Santorium holds on to this technique to keep himself out of stepping in something when situations contain a lot more gray.

      Some of you are making statements like this will be the reason that you won’t vote for him – I hope you are looking forward to being disappointed by everyone if this is your criteria for it.

      HE has some weird views that I don’t agree with and neither he nor Pawlenty or Bachmann have that ring of “Authenticity” to them. I just hear the CHARLIE BROWN “blah blah blah blah” (remember when the teacher or some adult was talking in his cartoons?)

      They are so out of it. THE POLITICAL train left the station a long time ago. AMERICANS are looking for real people speaking real PATRIOTISM with GUTS. THERE is a RIGHT/ there is a WRONG and I’m sick of hearing these guys and Bachmann try to give the ONE SIZE FITS ALL answers. That’s why this household is totally for PALIN. I agree, he, Newt, Pawlenty, Bachmann and even ROMNEY need to go. GOOD GRIEF…ROMNEY thinks by not participating in the traditional Straw Polls in Iowa and other states that he doesn’t have to worry about losing. I’d vote for him over Obama, but only if that’s all we had. I’d vote for Mickey Mouse over Obama.

      Isn’t it funny how these guys are suddenly so out-dated when the REAL DEAL comes along and by comparison..they are butkus. RUN SARAH RUN!!! I’d love to see PALIN/RYAN… what about you?

      Here is where weiner needs to man up.

      Yes, we have a formal procedure to kick his bony rear end out.
      But, we have one or two or TEN THOUSAND more important things to be doing right now.
      So, he should grow a pair and resign.
      The nation needs to be doing serious business, not sitting around giggling like school-girls about all the double entendres.
      If he does not resign, we will have congressional hearins broadcast live on cnn about his weenie.
      This will drag out through the meat of the 2012 campaign.

      This is fan-freakin-tastic!
