Ride Along: This Is What It’s Like to Bike Down 1,000 Stone Steps

As a kid, just making the decision to bike down your front porch steps was daunting (not to mention painful when things when badly), but that feat pales in comparison to the Red Bull Devotos de Monserrate 2012 race that takes riders down more than 1,000 stone steps with tight turns.

Gizmodo reports a helmet camera view of the daring ride was brought to us by Colombian downhill mountain biker Marcelo Gutierrez. In addition to just biking down steps, the 2,000-meter course has ramps, terrifying twists and turns (1:55), super steep angles (2:20) and the obstacle of a shanty town (2:57).

Watch it for yourself:

Gutierrez finished the bumpy, downhill race at 4:27. His time though was overcome by one second  by winner Filip Polc.

In the YouTube video description, Guiterrez describes it at the “the hardest downhill race I ever have.” The event took place on May 11 in Monserrate mountain in Bogota, Colombia.

Amazing. I think I would just turn back to safety, thank you. Crazy narrow. So nice to be fearless. And I love those Danny MccAskill videos. Why haven’t I heard of him before.

Dramamine, anyone? There has GOT to be a lot of blood spilled in this race. And how about all those idiots sitting ON THE WALL! One bump, and over they go. This is the kind of race where the last person alive wins. I love biking downhill fast, but if it ain’t smooth, I ain’t going! Those bumps are killers and for the young only. If you’re over 40 (I’m 71) your eyes and slower reflexes and stiffer muscles will get you killed on a ride like this.

Some of the sections on that “course” were scary. No way I would do that. Fun to watch, though.

I tried that course once on a unicycle, without a seat, never again!

Would never occur in this country. The Society For Prevention Of Cruelty To Paving Stones would prevent it.

For a lot of similar but powered video search YouTube for “enduro”. Or to narrow things down “enduro rad dad”. These are run between trees which in places are less than 30″ apart. A dirtbike, AMA membership, and $60 entry fee you too could ride among the pros.

I am a road biker too. Right now I have a vintage Peugeot PFN10 set up for touring with a 52-42-32 front and 9 speed Shimano rear:12-36. I am also running 25mm wheels and a Brooks B17 saddle. Otherwise it is stock.

Now that was fun. I try to ride 10 miles a day but I have to have considerably smooth pavement for a road bike. This is like being a kid again and really pushing for excitement. Thank you Liz. This was made for me.

You have to try downhill, it is so much fun. I started last year and it is just a total blast. Of course, I go down through trails in the woods, unlike what this guy did. If you in the area, check out Wisp Resort in McHenry, MD. I’d like to see more people getting into the sport.

I ride a bike. I ride a bike a lot. Nt even going to try that stunt. One wrong move and over and down the mountain you go. but I guess in a country where cocaine comes from you might try just about anything.
