‘Ride Pipe’: Nike Faces Anti-Drug Backlash to Shirt Slogans

Ride Pipe: Nike Faces Anti Drug Backlash to Shirt SlogansPORTLAND, Oregon (AP) — Nike Inc. is being blasted for replacing its signature “Just Do It” slogan on some T-shirts with the phrases “Dope,” ”Get High“ and ”Ride Pipe.”

The shoe and athletic apparel company said the terms are part of the lingo used by the skaters, snowboarders and participants in other extreme sports it’s trying to target with the shirts. But critics say the slogans endorse drug use.

Boston’s mayor has asked Nike to remove a display of the shirts. And an Oregon antidrug group condemned them in a letter sent to 1,500 people — including some at The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy — urging them to let Nike know they disapprove of the slogans.

“It’s gone past edgy,” said Tom Parker, spokesman for the Oregon Partnership. “Sure it is the language of skateboarders and surfers, but it’s also the language of addicts.”

Boston’s mayor Thomas M. Menino this week sent a letter to the general manager of a Niketown store in a popular shopping district in Boston after he saw the shirts in the store window. He asked that they be taken down, saying the company failed to take drug abuse seriously.

“Your window display of T-shirts with drug and profanity wordplay are out of keeping with the character of Boston’s Back Bay, our entire city and our aspirations for our young people … not to mention common sense,” Menino said in the letter.

Mayor: Nike’s shirts send wrong message about drugs: MyFoxBOSTON.com

The Nike shirts became available on June 1 in conjunction with the launch of an action sports campaign. The “Dope” shirt shows the image of a pill bottle upended with surfboards and skateboards pouring out. Not all the shirts have controversial terms. Other shirts include the phrases “F Gravity” and “Get Wet.”

Nike, based in Beaverton, Ore., .recently has increased its marketing surrounding extreme sports and said the new shirts promote sports — not illegal drug use.

“Sport is an antidote to drugs,” Nike spokeswoman Erin Dobson said in a statement. “There is no better adrenalin rush than catching a wave or landing a trick. The language is the same that skaters, BMX‘er’s and surfers use every day around the world.”

Skateboarders say references to pot smoking are common in extreme sports. “It’s part of the culture,” said Mike Hirsch, 45, a skateboarder since the 1970′s and owner of the SoCal Skate Ship in California.

Hirsh doesn’t sell Nike products at his store, but said he doesn’t think the shirts should be pulled because of the terms. “I’m not a big fan of it,Ride Pipe: Nike Faces Anti Drug Backlash to Shirt Slogans but it’s part of the street culture and always has been,” he said.

New Yorker Paul Roura, 25, a skateboarder for 15 years, called the shirts “corny.” ”It’s not the best image to be putting out there for skateboarders,” he said.

Travis Tygart, the CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, agrees. “Apparently, Nike did not consult any of their former sponsored athletes like Marion Jones, to see firsthand the destruction that comes from choosing to use dangerous drugs to cheat in sport,” said Tygart, referring to the track star who had her Olympic medals stripped after she admitted to using steroids.

“Athletes have had their lives ruined by the use of performance enhancing drugs, and it is totally irresponsible that Nike is now actively promoting it for profit,” he said.

Nike has long pushed the envelope with its products and marketing efforts. The company had an “Air Stab” line of shoes that was pulled in London in 2008 after a spate of knife deaths around that time. The company also had a series of ads for its Hyperdunk shoes that included images and slogans that some critics considered anti-gay. Nike supported the campaign at first but later withdrew the ads.

David Carter a professor of sports business at executive director of University of Southern California’s Sports Business Institute, said the shirts in the current campaign cross the line.

“I understand their edginess and where they‘ve been all these years trying to get people’s attention in dramatic ways,” said David Carter a professor of sports business at executive director of University of Southern California’s Sports Business Institute. But, “It is in poor taste given what the company really stands for when it comes to pure sports.”

However, Carter and other marketing experts said Nike might be laughing all the way to the bank. The controversy could generate more attention and spur sales of the shirts, they say.

“I don‘t think it’s necessarily a bad thing,” said Paul Swanguard, managing director of the University of Oregon’s Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. “It’s not an overt attempt to offend but it is an overt attempt to connect, which is what Nike has always done well.”

Mass media has brought us enough knowledge of the effects of drugs. If you put it in your body, then you are not fit to breathe. Ron Paul is RIGHT and so was Bill Buckley Jr. LEGALIZE IT ALL. Let the person make the choice between life and death. In the mean time drug cartels disappear and the barbarity that comes with it. The government makes $$$$$$$$ on the sale, which can lessen the tax burden on us. Well, maybe. So far the more politicians get in revenue the more they want and they DO not reduce taxes, permanently ever. Legalize drugs. Reform tax system to Fairtax and the US will be back on track to prosperity. Those that chose death of drugs well, they are naturally culling the herd. NO welfare for drug addicts ONLY sanatoriums. Like back in the 1920/30s.

“The Crusades only gave the Muslims another, and more importantly, perhaps the First reason to hate Christians.”
The ignorance of the crusades is pathetic. The crusades were first a response against Islamic expansion. The Muslims attacked and were conquering Christian lands. The Byzantine Emperor asked the Europeans for help. The Pope got involved in recruiting and we got the crusades. The only thing religion had to do with it was for recruiting, it was also the reason for its failure, as once they served their time the majority returned home, not leaving enough people to hold to territories. Islam created the holy war/crusades. Unfortunately, the christians behaved just as badly as the ******* in their conduct. Islam needs no reason to hate us, other than the fact we represent freedom and are not muslim.

The religious overtones of some of the posts here is interesting as the word “nike” in Greek roughly means in English “overcome”. Maybe the religious ‘objectors’ should petition Nike to change their name? Romans 8:37 says of Christians that we are “more than conquerers” (huper-nikao…super-overcomers)… done mostly through prayer, incidentally.
I don’t have a problem with Nike printing these shirts; after all they will have to bear the burden of selling them and if public opinion goes against what is on them it might be a hard sell. On the other hand as far too often my Christian brethren do; if too much is made over these slogans, it will only make the shirts more desirable to the crowd that Nike has targeted with the promotion. Bre’r Rabbit had it right when he said: “don’t throw me in that there briar patch!”

If they were a good , responsible company they would want more people wearing and using their equipment by greatly lowering the prices. Obviously they care only for themselves and are loved by the lamestream media who has yet to be criotcal of them for their greed.

Freedom of speech Amendment I- “prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” So why are people trying to say Nike shouldn’t be allowed to make these shirts, or why cant the shop owner not display them? If you don’t like it, then don‘t buy them and don’t go by the damn shop. This is the problem with America now, people think only of themselves and forget some people might not be so easy to offend by petty crap like this. Nike is right, people my age (20) or around my age do use these words in daily life. We arnt talking about drugs we are talking about sports. Just because the few are bad why ban the majority? The Crusades only gave the Muslims another, and more importantly, perhaps the First reason to hate Christians.

@Aaron, Let me explain some things about the crusades. First there were eight major crusades and numerous expeditions that continued into the 14th and 15th century. The first major crusade started around 1095AD and the eight major crusade around 1270AD. So around 175 years of war.

Instead of going into a long textbook answer here is an abridged answer. Islam had spread throughout the middle east and into Europe. Jews and Christians in those conquered lands were slaves to the Islamist. Original expeditions were just pilgrimages to Jerusalem by Christians. When the Christians were unable to pass conflict followed.

Kings led Crusades, commissioned by the church because the church had money. Several of the crusades were complete failures. Some had huge success. The ownership of Jerusalem went back and forth. Jews had no power and no control and were killed by both sides. No war is perfect and for those who have been in battle you know what I am talking about.

So if that is what you are referring to as dark days of Christianity then yes, there were several mistakes. Can Christians learn from their mistakes and stand together once again to stop the advance of Islamic terror again….YES!

I’m with the Ron Paul school of thought that says what a person puts into his/her own body is their own business. I think it’s madness to be addicted to drugs or alchol, but it’s an individual choice.

And I don’t buy the notion that drugs will be more available to kids than it is right now. As it stands, they can buy anything the want.

Education and rehab centers are much less costly than court costs and incarceration. California at present is at a point where it has to release thousands of prisoners, because they can’t pay to house them. In other parts of the country entire police departments have been abolished. New Jersey cities have…or are in the process of…laying off 1/3 to 1/2 of their police, and other areas of the country are cutting back severely. That trend will continue.

Remember how how the government howled about even penny ante gambling? Well, when they got low on money they weren’t in the least reluctant to legalize off track wagering, casinos and lotteries.

Eventually I think they’ll have to legalize marijuana at the very least, if figures show they can make a profit.

The government is going to keep up this ongoing incrementalization of taxes and fees until they can’t squeeze the people anymore to pay for their bloated bureaucracies, When it gets to the point of riots in the streets or acquiring revenue via legalizing illegal drugs, they’ll decide on the extra revenue. Some more of the pc crowd speaking up. There are a lot of words out there that can either be used as a positive term or a negative term. If people are afraid to use any word that could be used in a negative connotation then they have reduced their vocabulary to less that half of the words that they know. Gay means happy but the homosexual crowd uses it as a term to describe themselves (even though I know a lot of homosexual people that are more unhappy than they are gay). Perhaps we should stop using that word since the statement “I’m feeling gay” can mean that they are feeling happy or that they are homosexual.

I’ve smoked marijuana regularly for over 15 yrs. It has no effect on “cooling me out” in regards to the multiple intrusions on our liberties by the Nazi Police State and their falsified War on Drugs, or their falsified War on Terror.

Nevertheless, I could see a good deal of people who are not capable of functioning when smoking marijuana or using drugs becoming easily pacified, misled, and in general being somewhat vulnerable to the malicious manipulation by government propagandists.

These types of people were not capable of thinking coherently sober, let alone influenced by marijuana or other drugs.

However, I stand on the fact that the majority of people will not be pacified by something that shouldn’t be illegal in the first place. They have to come with a Flintstone slab of ribs, not that little dirty chicken bone to toss to the angry masses.

Get High refers to the runner’s high. Which, if one were to actually read and look into, is one of the best cures for drug and alcohol addiction. At least according to the research and studies done over the past 35 years.

Secondly, yes it is terminology used by skaters, surfers, and the like. Guess what, while not all associated with these activities use drugs it is well known that skaters, surfers, snow boarders etc exist in a psuedo-drug culture.

Finally, and most importantly, its called FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Can’t have it both ways, there is either freedom of speech and expression or there isn’t. There is no halfway, there is no partial freedom, there is freedom and there is the lack of freedom. Which side do you want to be on? :)

who cares…legalize weed, tax it and regulate it like alcohol and tobacco, and lets all move on! Unless you don’t believe the govt should look for new ways to make money to help pay for deficit reduction. We have lost the war on drugs, we have never won a battle, not even a skirmish. Weed is here to stay, people smoke it, get over it and move on…what ever happened to personal freedoms, liberty, and choice….see I am a conservative, maybe more libertarian, but this is what I’ll never understand about my fellow conservatives…when it comes to drugs, no choice, when it comes to abortion no choice. When it comes to everything else, conservatives are yelling about personal freedoms and choice…bottom line….get the damn government out of our lives and out of our wallets!

Now if they put out the “Just Do It” slogan AFTER the “Get High” slogan– “Just Do I” would take on a whole new meaning….
