The removal of an American flag from a Maryland traffic circle prompted a patriotic rally after a report that the road crew that took the flag down tossed it in the back of a dump truck.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Rhonda Winkler’s family first posted a flag in the Woodbine, Md. roundabout three years ago in honor of their soldier nephew’s deployment to Afghanistan. They’ve taken care of the flag ever since, replacing it with a new one every few months.

A month ago, a car crashed into the circle, running over the flag and destroying it. The Winkler family, aided by an 88-year-old World War II veteran, replaced the flag again and stuck a new gold-painted pole in the ground. At some point, a pine tree in the circle was also damaged: either in the crash or was heavily trimmed back to make the flag more visible, according to conflicting media reports.

Then, on Dec. 19, Winkler got a call alerting her that state road crews had removed the new flag and flag pole, tossing both in the back of a dump truck.

Her husband, Jeff Winkler, contacted the highway administration and was told people had complained about the flag and damaged tree, and that posting a flag on the roundabout was considered trespassing on state property.

“They told us it was against the law to erect a flag on the traffic circle,” Rhonda Winkler told Fox News. “They told my husband that whoever put up the flag could be arrested for trespassing.”

David Buck, a state highway spokesmn, told the Baltimore Sun removing the flag was also a matter of safety for the people who cross the street to get to the circle to take care of the flag.

“They don’t have traffic control out there, and they don’t have [road work] vests on,” he told the newspaper.

The Winkler family tried to get the flag back from the highway administration but has been unsuccessful.

“We figured it’s the American flag and we live in the United States of America – how can anyone have a problem with it,” Winkler told Fox.

As a result, the family planned a patriotic event in protest: They got a permit, borrowed a crane and hung a massive flag above the circle on Dec. 23. A large sign next to it read, “Welcome Home U.S. TROOPS, United Patriots of Maryland.” According to the Baltimore Sun, the event attracted dozens of people, many of whom waved their own flags in solidarity.

Buck said he hopes a solution can be found, but said allowing residents to put flags up in traffic circles would require a statewide policy change.

For her part, Winkler told the Baltimore Sun she’s “not a big stink maker.”

“I don’t sweat the small stuff, and we’re at the point [in society] where you can‘t say this and you can’t do that,” she said. “But the American flag is one thing we are all going to stand up for.”

would like to see a small tent city set up by the loocals in protest and see how long they are allowed to stay there. my guess would be less than 24 hours. but the occupiers would be alllowed to stay there months.

Let’s see, I’ll bet that the Maryland road crew is all union. After what we have seen of unions this year we can safely say they have NO Respect for the Flag, what it stands for, freedom of speech, or people who believe in the principals that this nation was founded on. So it comes as no surprise that they would toss the flag into the back of a dump-truck.

The comparison of the “State’s” reaction to the flag in the circle and it’s reaction to the Occupy-Anywhere shows a HUGE miscarriage of justice (preferential treatment).

Is it because the FLAG represents something noble and the state of Maryland despises what it stands for? Well, you can decide for your self, but I’m discussed with this PROGRESSIVE BS. Just where are we progressing to? People of Maryland if you don’t like being viewed in this way, then change it. Right now you are a disgrace to freedom.

This is how we take back our country. Don’t get fustrated, get activated. When our collective voices are raised along with lawful actions they will no longer be able to ignore the majority of Americans in this country but we need everyone out there to know what they stand for and what they believe, the time for fence sitting is over.

Apparently, you are wrong. “We” aren’t all going to stand up for it. It wouldn’t have been in the crapper if “we” all stood up for it.

Something Americans have to understand… socialism, marxism, communism ALL are ideologies as much as ‘America’ “IS” an “idea”.

We have (our government) brought millions of people from these ideological societies HERE and insisted they NOT assimilate (become American). That they retain their cultural and philosophical ties.

We aren‘t going to ’win’ this internal fight. Our government “IS” against us. It controls the rules, the locks, the borders (HA) the enforcement. It’s NOT going to happen. Period. There “IS” no “hope.” It’s not possible. I don’t care if the Pope is elected president.

“America” “IS” an idea. Without a people who believe in the ‘idea’ there is no “idea.“ The ”idea” is diminished to a hope or a concept. It no longer retains the position of an ‘ideology’. Our politicians have stuck a knife into the heart of America for their own personal gain. (See insider trading).

We are witnessing the end of (another) civilization. (see Rome, Egyptian, Azteca and Mayan cultures, et al). We can NOT be saved. Period. End of story.

I won’t roll over. But the end “IS” neigh. And it “IS” inevitable. YOU have been sold.

Roundabouts work well where they have always been. If you install a new one, people here don’t even know how to drive in one. No one gives right-of-way to those already in it, they try to go the wrong way because they don’t want to go all the way around to get to the exit that would have been a simple left turn. I first experienced a roundabout in Bermuda. Didn’t have a problem one with it, once I learned the principle. We have one here in Texas to enter a shopping mall and the people ignore the rules. That’s what causes accidents, not being distracted by a waving flag.

Talk about unsafe. Try driving a semi around one of these. I usually have to take up 2 – 3 lanes to get around them so as not to take down signs, light poles or anything else that might be in the way. Then I get flipped off, yelled at, cussed out for taking up so many lanes. Hey, I didn’t put the stupid circle in the middle of the intersection. Piss poor planning by the “Central Planners”, ie, Government..

I although I understand where you are coming from and if you are way out in the country free running dogs would not bother me as generally they would still be on their owners property. However, I am in the country, but we are part of a subdivision. Dogs in the “county” are not held to a leash law, but our homeowner’s association requires all pets to be on a leash. Many dog owners do not follow the association rules and I get dog’s crapping and peeing in my yard, killing my grass. I am having to dig up brown spots and plant new grass every year. This cost me money.

The point of my story is it depends on how country you are and the distance between homes.

Here in Southern Arizona we have illegals running wild- defecating an urinating in the desert, dropping trash and plastic bottles, walking away from lit campfires. It’s pretty bad when they drop TONS of garbage in our deserts and clean up crews have to wear biohazard suits to clean it up. Cattle eat the plastic and they die. It’s like living in a war zone- actually it is a war zone. I’d much rather have a few neighborhood dogs running around the neighborhood. At least the dogs don’t break into our homes and steal from us.

Anyone who would live in a place that allows some ridiculous “homeowners association” to tell them what they can and can‘t do on their property doesn’t understand what it is to live in the country, or much about freedom in general. If they signed a contract that said they would abide by the decisions of a collective then let them wallow in their misery. Fools!

I am 67 yrs young and I grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles CA. Around the 60′s blacks were trying to move into better homes away from the trashy areas they were in. I remember my mom saying “well here goes the neighborhood.” Well it was not true in ours at the time.Jackie Robinson lived 2 blocks away. nice place. My 8th grade teacher moved across the street. very nice people and nice home. Farther away tho’ was a different story. they really did cause a messy neighborhood and of course land prices went down.So I guess it happens everywhere with a certain type of culture. Some latinos dont care what their places are like but others do. Whites the same depending where you are.Too bad about your area but it happens. Wait til your surrounded by muslims and mosques. then I would worry.

If it had been a Mexican flag, Communist flag, or Hebollah flag, the state would have been out there to build a concrete wall around it to protect it from harm. But since it was nothing but an American flag they felt it needed to be put in the trash.

Of course, being in the Communist State of Maryland, this is the expected norm. It is time for this country to divide into 3 parts. East Coast, West Coast, and then the rest of us. At least we would not have to put up with communism in the real America..

That doesn’t change the fact that you cannot just decide to randomly put something anywhere you like. They stay for years. If the state has no problem with them there is no reason to remove the flag. Save the memorials for the cemetary and put up a proper flagpole at the roundabout. Al that is my understanding as well, however, I believe we have reached a boiling point with encroaching communism. Fifty years ago it would have been different but today anyone who shows any patriotism in public must stand up to the liberals who just wait and watch for such moments. A good example is manger scenes at Christmas or the word Christmas. All of these things we have to fight to gain an inch anymore but that inch is as important as miles the way our society is being literally stolen from us.

I say (IMO) get rid of the unions, fire those unpatriotic workers and hire patriotic people because there sure are millions of people looking for work to replace those unpatriotic idiots. This is OUR country! NOT Mexicos and NOT any muslim country. IF they DON’T like it…go back to their worthless, unprosperous, GODless country, and make a change there. I mean they must have left their country for a reason.

Looks like those tying it to the tree are also being disrespectful. If memory serves me correctly, my dad, my grandfather and many other relatives were in the military and even now my second cousin is in ROTC mentioned proper display of the flag. I don’t believe this is it.

To my understanding it must be taken down at dusk unless a light is shining upon it at night. If it gets worn out or torn, must be burned respectfully. I could be wrong and I’ll check with my dad but this does not look like they are honoring it properly either.

Beside it’s not their property. Just saying…

Hey if people can burn it well then what is wrong with flying it, saluting it or maybe even saying the pledge of allegiance to it! just saying.

The flag is hung with the spirit of patriotism and love of this country. I would think someone like you who has the military family you claim would be able to see beyond your petty comment, and understand the message.

@ oldironsides now we don’t need to call the kid sounds like he was taught the military way and that’s ok and maybe he has not been around long enough to understand public land. At least he is sticking up for the flag.

A flag can be flown after dark unlighted- but lighting is the preferred method.
“If memory serves me…” you’re not certain your father served, or your grandfather? Or your cousin? Yet you’re certain the flag must be taken down at dusk. Good thinking, Mel.

@oldironsides I’m not a snob and I happen to read about “rights of way” that we allowed govt to dictate to us. When I display my flag improperly, I do hear about it. I even went as far to burn my tiny flags I place outside because they got ripped. Not unpatriotic, actually quite the opposite.

Oldtexan in support of Israel Thanks, I’m actually a grown woman who does respect the flag immensely because of my father who was 4 years active and 2 years inactive but never saw combat, thankfully… but because my ‘gone but not forgotten’ grandfather did fight in WWII and he came home a changed man. (He was respectful but didn’t speak much of what he witnessed)

Heck, silly little side note, I was born on Veterans Days and I have donated money throughout the years to Vets. I’m proud of our men and women who have served and are serving. I want us to continue to be the exceptional country we were founded on but sadly it looks like every day it’s being taken away, bit by bit.

@Wolf. wow wolf, reading comprehension problems much?? Here is what I said “If memory serves me correctly, my dad, my grandfather and many other relatives were in the military and even now my second cousin is in ROTC mentioned proper display of the flag.”

Proper display of the flag, not if I knew whether or not my father and relatives served.

Without a doubt. I worked with the State of Connecticut for 11 years. All the employees, especially the court marshals, put on a show of patriotism but when I showed them statistics of how governement employees make nearly double that of the private sector they all became OWS types, obsessed with the inequality that capitalism creates.

Scratch a union government employee and you will find a socialist under their skin.

Citizens just don’t seem to appreciate the price that has been paid for our freedom. To me the American Flag is a symbol of that price and should be treated with the respect due it..
