Did Portman Just Let Slip That He‘s Being Vetted for Romney’s Veep?

Ohio Senator Rob Portman – seen by some corners of the Right as an overwhelmingly “safe” choice for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s Vice President – may have just done something very risky indeed.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman Lets Slip That Hes Being Vetted to Be Mitt Romneys Vice President

Rob Portman

In speaking to ABC News Wednesday, Portman seemed to inadvertently let slip that he had been engaged in several “intense” meetings with Romney campaign advisers, including Beth Myers, the woman who is widely known to be influencing the selection process. The meetings reportedly lasted six hours, each lasting a single hour. Portman reportedly said this:

“You know, I talk to those guys all the time on how things are going in Ohio and what the message ought to be back home in Ohio, so it was a good-good day.”

Portman has since doubled back and said the meetings had nothing to do with vetting. ABC has updated its story, and Portman aides claim the meetings were purely financial in nature. Beyond that, we can only speculate.

Nevertheless, if Portman is truly on the short list, and many believe he is, then he comes into the election a strong second fiddle for Romney. Indeed, Portman’s own election history is highly encouraging for Republicans – he won election to Ohio’s vacant Senate seat in 2010 by double digit margins against a committed progressive Democrat, Lee Fisher. Portman’s success was partially aided by a series of superb debate performances against Democratic candidate Lee Fisher – debates that were described by your humble author in the pages of National Review this way:

Rob Portman savaged Lee Fisher, to the point that even some of the lefty blogs in the state expressed admiration for Portman’s poise and preparation. It’s obvious that his experience preparing presidents for debates has paid off, whereas Fisher came off as a person with virtually nothing to talk about as far as an agenda (other than a few platitudes).[...]

Nice guys finish last. This debate is no exception.

Switch out the name “Fisher” with the name “Biden” and you‘ll probably have a good idea of what will happen come this year’s debates, if Portman is the Veep. Consider this video:

      Agreed.

Romney and his team are LAME. They are NOT aggressive. They are boy scouts up against Chicago thugs. This is 2008/McCain ALL OVER AGAIN. To complete the McCain pathetic 2008 campaign – all Romney needs to do is CONTINUE SAYING OBAMA is a NICE guy just like McCain did and then ROMNEY needs to attack his VP repeatedly and allow other RINO’s to attack Palin also. Both McCain and RINO ROMNEY spent 2008 ATTACKING Palin. Romney wanted to knock her out as badly as the left did. Oh wait – RomneyCare IS more to the left than the right.

I will vote for RINO Romney ONLY because of my fear of Obama. I am under no illusions that Romney will save our Constitution which he craps on but he will slow the train over the cliff.

I am also thankful for PACS which can hopefully ATTACK ROMNEY while knits like an old woman in a corner. If he picks this Ohio Republican – the guy needs to STEP UP and his personality – like Romney’s is low key.

What is it with WIMPY Christians and WIMPY Mormons? Grow a SET.

And this Portman man is a WIMP ALSO. He is NOT aggressive – NEVER. He is NOT a pit bull to Romney which a VP must be. Fox News REPEATEDLY had conservatives saying this. ONLY IF THIS MAN can GROW A SET and BE AGGRESSIVE should he be picked. Ditto for Rubio who is also rather wimpy and also he hides a lot like he doesn’t want to be in the spotlight.

Looks like its just too radical of a pick for Romney to make in choosing a woman or a multiculture male. Doesn’t he get it? Obama won because he played the multiculture like a harp! Romney needs to pick a running mate who is Latino or Black and or female. Two White guys on the ticket is a loosing bargain, unfortunately thats the way it is. In addition it really makes us look out of touch with the multiculture at large and will just solidify what most people have been told by the Left that Reps are White Racists. Dumb pick Romney, don’t do it. Pick an equally qualified West or Rubio.

As a Cincinnatian, I have been familiar with Portman for over ten years. He is an even-keeled guy, but is in lock-step with the DC GOP, in other words, he will not go against what the beltway GOP says to do, so is NOT a good candidate, BUT what does a veep do anyway? Cheerleader for the President. If Biden-the-chimp could be VP, anyone could. Portman is WAAAAY smarter than Biden, so if something happened to Romney, Portman could transition easily. Before he resigned during Bush’s presidency, Portman was going to majorly overhaul the IRS code and make it easier to pay and do taxes. He’s a smart guy, and Romney could do worse, but I agree, Rand Paul would be better. Having a Constitutional conservative in there would go a long way to soothing a lot of PaulBot’s feathers.
Rand is EXTREMELY intelligent and would make a better VP. He would not be Mr. Nice guy and hold back, he would go after Obama and his administration.

There is nothing wrong with a humble man as president.. I just don’t think Mitt is the type of man who gets ugly and screams bloody lies, like Obama and his Merry Men! Why lower himself like Obama? Obama is digging his own hole with the lying ads he has made.. Its pretty bad when they can’t find anything really dirty on Mitt.. he has led a honorable life. Has never cheated on his wife, beaten his children.. or for that matter hidden his school records, lied about his real name like (Barry Soetero) did, he has not used numerous SS#’s http://www.westernjournalism.com/exclusive-investigative-reports/the-mystery-of-barack-obama-continues/.. isn‘t it enough to know that BHO’s whole life has been a lie, has been disproved over and over and people still would vote for the great deciever?? I sure as hell want a good man as president.. I have had enough of a bad one.. who obvioulsy hates America and its people.. is purposely trying to destroy this country!! Wake up America!

My dream VP would be Allen West against either Obama or Biden. So refreshing to hear someone declare the truth about the enemies among us, West has spent an entire career identifying and fighting our enemies. He knows one when he sees one. How about this: …Portman had no qualms about putting a bill in the hopper that promises to saddle our country with another massive federal bureaucracy: The Global Conservation Act of 2012.

      It mandates:

In General- Not later than 2 years after the date of the enactment of this Act, the President, acting through the Interagency Working Group on Global Conservation designated pursuant to section 202(a), shall establish and submit to the appropriate congressional committees a comprehensive strategy (hereafter referred to as the `International Conservation Strategy’) to strengthen the capacity of the United States to collaborate with other countries, international organizations, the private sector, and private voluntary organizations on a sustained international effort to conserve natural resources and enhance biodiversity in a manner beneficial to the economic well-being and security of the United States and other participating countries.

I don’t think so. I could be wrong, time will tell. But I think we are seeing a very intelligent strategy at play. Romney and Obama both are battling for funding. Romney has somehow been able to counter Obama’s advantages and is raising more…but spending less in these early months. I think it is foolish to expect Romeny to start spending large sums NOW, during the July 4 holiday/vacation season. If you are going to put out expensive ads…do it when people will see them.
Meanwhile, Obama has been pushing expensive ads consistently, expending his war chest early. And you can hear the increasing desperation about fund raising every day as they send out second, third emails to donors begging for money and warning “we could lose this thing”.
Also, Romney has been going to smaller venues right now. I heard some locals complaining about that, how unwise it is. But is it? If you go to major cities, you get some free press. If you do that during holidays or during events that conflict in thenews cycle (such as when SCOTUS released its decision on Obama Care) then you get little or no free press. Maximize the impact, boys and girls.
Finally, Romney has played “Statesman”–clearly he’s willing to hit hard, but the real attack comes from the VP and the PACs, the Presidential candidate tries to remain “Presidential” and represent “everyone”. His attacks will remain on substance, the others will go hard after character, scandals (F&F, unconstitutional acts et)

Romney is going to pick the most progressive VP he can get away with just in case he actually wins the presidency. That way he will have all the progressive backing he needs to grow the size of the government. If he loses the race progressives will still get the bigger government they all want from Obama.

This race is not about WE THE PEOPLE. It’s about who is lucky enough to be the next BIG SPENDER of printed greenbacks. Romney is a LIBERAL! HELLO DIP SHI** ANYBODY HOME?

You people lost your chance to vote for the ONLY ONLY ONLY candidate who had real constitutional principals. Some of these people haven’t set foot in that country since they were born. You can’t just pack up and leave for a year; where would you go? Both of the plans I’m describing concentrate on protecting the border first and foremost. Then, dealing with illegals already here on a somewhat case by case basis rather than a blanket policy for everyone. In my opinion, these are much better plans that what we have in place now or anything anyone else is proposing.

Lastly; death, to liberty, freedom, thus enslaving every person in the land all this can be accomplished with the help of a propaganda media well-schooled in psychological thought control techniques.

I like Rob Portman. He’s a smart guy an seems like a level-headed choice. But, I do not want him running as VP! That means we will have to vote for another Senate candidate in Ohio and that risks giving it to another Democrat, like Ted Strickland. He too the Obama kool-aid hook, line, and sinker, and watch Ohio drop off the cliff. Kasich isnt perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but he isn’t Strickland.

Portman is smart and safe, but you know the stupid left will tie him in with Bush and attempt to make it a big negative. Lefties and others who are not too bright, see things in black and white. They will only see 2 white guys. They will make something of it. Might work, might not. I’d love to see Allen West in there…he’s my guy!

The vetting isn’t over, and It‘s Romney’s choice. Let’s alll keep trying to educate the public on failed Obama Presidency, Five trillion dollars added to the national debt, Failed stimulus, high unemployment, Failed 2010 “Summer of Recovery”, laughable failure of “shovel ready jobs”, and all the lies; which are toooo numerous to mention. Out of all the amazing people he could choose(West, Rubio, Ryan, etc.), he’s looking at some howdy doody, status quo RINO. That’s just beautiful! This sure makes it look like Romney’s completely out of touch with what the American people want.

Sarah Palin wasn’t the problem. George Bush was the problem, a progressive that ushered TARP in 30 days before the election which caused the stock market to tank. Nobody talks about that. George then writes a check to general motors before he left office. Republicans are in bed with the democrats. A Rob Portman selection indicates to me that Romney isn’t serious enough to lead our nation against the evil within.
