Rocker Steven Tyler ‘Murders,’ Slightly Changes National Anthem

Steven Tyler, the legendary front man of the band Aerosmith, just started his second season as a judge on the popular talent show “American Idol.” But he might have a hard time defending that role after his rendition of the National Anthem from Sunday’s AFC Championship Game goes viral. And trust me, it will go viral. As SportsGrid puts it, he didn’t really sing it, but rather “screeched” and “murdered” it. (Its headline: “Steven Tyler Sings/Screeches/Murders The National Anthem.”)

“You have to believe that if ‘judge’ Steven Tyler saw ‘singer’ Steven Tyler perform this poorly,” SportsGrid says, “he probably wouldn’t put him through to “Hollywood week.’”

The website Ultimate Classic Rock compiled just some of the Twittersphere reaction to the performance:

Deadspin panned Tyler’s “juxtaposition of screaming and a languid pace” and his “liberal lack of adherence to the actual lyric.“ That last quote is in reference to Tyler singing ”as bomb bursting in air“ instead of ”the bombs bursting in air.”

    But Tyler did something very few singers of the Star Spangled Banner ever do in this octave and a half tune, he hit the highs and lows. Baltimore Native.

      For an old rocker, he did pretty good! Few toasted brain cells, and a few nodes on the cords but he still knocked it out without going all “Rosie” on it. Don‘t be too sure he’s a lib either… More Apolitical… might find he’s a bit right leaning. Best called an independent.

      Steven Tyler (Tallirico) once told me I was the worst guitar player he had ever heard.
      That was back in New Hampshire in ‘69.

      Then I got drafted and that saved me from a life of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

      I’d give Steve a 3 on his performance today.

      He really wasn’t that bad at all. I though it was going to be like when Roseanne Barr performed the Star Spangled Banner on July 25, 1990, before a baseball game between the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds at Jack Murphy Stadium. Not even close.

      I was going to watch the game but heard this idiot and cut tv off. I’m reading Glenn Meades “Resurrection Day.” Can’t stand to hear the National Anthem buchered. That’s why Nascar chose Trace Atkins to sing it at the last race. I hope the sponsers get a refund. Now the Giants and 49″ers was aok. The Fox sponsers won;t need a refund.

      What gets me more than his rendition, is the numbers of people in the stands actually walking during the anthem. Everyone is standing, though they don’t know why. They mill about with their hats still on, waiting for the ending “Brave” moment to roar… because that’s what you do, right?

      They asked for Tyler and they got Tyler. But look past him in the video and see the souls still walking to their seats or talking to the guy next to them. Shame.

He was RESPECTFUL.As for his politics, he keeps them out of the public eye. Don’t assume anything. We have more important issues. Pick your battles wisely.       I watched the entire performance in our theater in thundering surround sound and thought it was great! To our guests who were at the bar and heard, but did not see, they generally said, “What the hell is that?”

      I love Aerosmith but Tyler is not a “singer’s singer”. And honestly…enough vocal gymnastics and “freestyling”….just sing the national anthem. OK? I particularly dislike the clods who warble and improvise through the national anthem and to make it more irritating…move their hand up and down to coincide with the low or high notes they’re mangling the national anthem with.

      It wasn’t good, but The Star-Spangled Banner isn’t exactly his style of music either. He at least kept the basic tune of the song and many musicians don’t even bother doing that. As for the rock star screaming, I’ll take that over hip-hop warbling any day (oh, excuse me, it’s called “the runs”).

      Being the most butchered song in existence, it needs to be performed especially bad in order to really be noticed.

      I have no idea what the problem was with it. This is Steven Tyler, like someone said, he was never one of the Three Tenors. Yes, he did add his signature scream-thing, but he did it in the one place where it was appropriate. So what? How many other artists have changed the entire song??

      Francis Scott Key wrote the words as a poem. It was much later adapted from an old beer-hall song. There is no one “correct” rendition, although some are much more familiar. It always kills me when people complain about hearing something different. He didn’t butcher it like Roseanne Barr did at a San Diego Padres years ago. No doubt it‘s available on YouTube but I don’t actually care. Some of you need to get a life…this is a NON-STORY!

    What do we expect when we allow pop/rock singers to “sing” our national anthem?? The national anthem is not a rock/pop song; and I’m tired of it sung as though it was — how about you? Time to hear our national anthem song respectfully and beautifully — let’s tell the sports industry and media industry that this is what we want!

      There is no correct way to sing the Star Spangled Banner. The popular version is adapted from an old beer-hall song and most renditions are variations of this tune. Certainly there are things in your life that are more important that how someone sang the national anthem at a sports contest. Why do we sing the national anthem before sports contests?       So, every performer should check with you every year to find out if they are still relevant? He did as well as I expected him to do. He’s used to having two guitars, bass and drums behind him.       As far as Mr. Tyler messing up on the words… thats what it was. He fouled up but adlibbed well enough to keep from b’utchering it. Other than the scream towards the end of it I think he did a decent job. He is Steven Tyler. He did not show disrespect in my eyes.

      My husband said, “…it’s Steven Tyler…”. Does the NFL have tryouts for the worst version/singer of the National Anthem and then chose that person? That was embarassing – even the players looked stunned – not quite as stunned as the Ravens after that missed field goal, however.

      And then on the other hand, Kristin Chenowith just nailed the National Anthem and even looked like she meant it. Thank you for respecting this song that should be held dear to all who live here in freedom.

    What a bunch of domb comments on here. Tyler’s rendition the worst ever? Apparently, none of you jokers were alive yet when Chrstina Aguilera completely forgot the words less than a year ago. And trust me — netword execs didn’t hire Steven Tyler to sing the national anthem like Luciano Pavarotti. You get what you pay for. At least he knows the words.

      Thank you for your post. Steve is who he is and feels comfortable in his dress style etc. and Dream On is one cool song. In the late 80′s when MTV had great songs and videos, I taped about 20,4hr video tapes and they are still in good condition. I just had a feeling music was changing for the worst,in my opinion, going into the 90′s. Country music now is like what light rock & roll was and has that rock-a-billy sound. I say to Steve, rock on old man…you rock (and I am older than Steve)

    It wasn’t pretty – but that’s just it, Tyler doesn’t sing pretty. He screeches, that’s what he does and frankly I thought his performance was great. At the same time, the comments crack me up cause I knew it wouldn’t go over well with a lot of peeps. Rock on Steven!

    I sing in a rock band and I was squinting my eyes cuz I thought he’d blow it big time; he didn’t. It wasn’t one of the best, but he got thru it. On key throughout which was fortunate.

      Either both of you have been way too close to the speaker monitors in your life or your both have no clue, I’d guess the latter. It is supposed to be an honor to sing the National Anthem not some lame, half-assed idol reject tryout…thank you very little for your comments we are all dumber for hearing them.

    I didn’t think it was that bad. So he isn‘t a singer who can’t sing without music. He is a hard rock singer, they don’t have to be in tune. He did better than Roseanne Barr and those singers who forget the words.

    Doubt that will go viral…. Sounded exactly like Steven Tyler, not to sure what the big deal is. Just because there is little LSD left in his spine and he literally saw the bombs bursting in air, instead of taking a 3rd person account, not sure where the harsh critique is from.

      Am I missing something? I thought he sounded great. He started out at a higher pitch than most singers, and hit all the high notes. No comparison to Roseanne Barr grabbing her crotch.
