Romney Denies Guaranteeing Victory in Iowa — But Does the Video Evidence Agree?

Mitt Romney surprised some people when he seemingly gave a Joe Namath-like promise in Iowa on Sunday, saying he would win the Hawkeye State caucuses.  That seemed to be a bold move from a man who hasn’t spent much time in the state until recently. But now, he’s denying he said that. But does the video evidence support it?

Here’s how the L.A. Times reported his statement:

“We’re going to win this thing, with all of our passion and strength and do everything we can to get this campaign on the right track to go across the nation and to pick up other states and to get the ballots I need, the votes I need to become our nominee,” he said at an asphalt plant here.

Fox even captured video of the remarks:

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program on Tuesday, however, Romney backtracked, and even denied making the claim:

“I don’t think I quite said that,” he said. When pressed by the hosts he responded, “No, no, no.”

“If all goes well I hope I become the nominee and I take on the White House. At this stage I think it’s hard to predict exactly what’s going to happen,” he said. “I think I’ll be among the top group. I don’t know whether it’s one, two, or three.”

All in all, it seems like a curious thing to deny given the body of evidence. Or, if in his eyes he doesn’t see it as an outright denial, it still seems to be a curious point to split hairs over.

The denial comes on the heels of Newt Gingrich calling Romney  a “liar” over the way Romney has presented his moderate political views.

    I dont think this was a cocky statement. Pretty sure every one running has said a similar thing. Problem for Romney is the Evangelicals arent going to vote for him due to being a Mormon, and he has been changing his postion on every subject under the sun the past 20 years to try find what people like. So the tea party will stay away from him. Without those two blocks he will get crushed by Obama.

    A vote for Romney is a vote for Obama.

      I can’t believe how many of you have fallen right into the lefts lap with the Romney stuff. You have been infiltrated by liberals who keep repeating the same chant over and over again. You only repeat it. Romney has changed his stance, yes, however, I have changed every fundamental belief that makes up the person I am. If I did not, If Glenn Beck did not, we would have died holding tightly to a beief system that refused to let go of. Oh yes, I do recall how hard it was to let go of certain ideas. The rpide, the great fear that if these ideas weren’t true, then the question that would follow is, “if these ideas that mold the person I am are not true then I have no identity”. Most of you have never had to dig this deep. No person would, it is far to painful an experience. Even when faced with the fact that if you use one more time you could die, to take a moral inventory and find out that I was only a product of the idea and concepts that made up my environment, I assure, is a most scary thing. Most people don’t even do, instead, they become addicted to meetings, using them to replace the drug or the drink. I am talking about things changing like, I was a hunter all my life, used to LOVE to hunt, or thought I did. This is what men did, so as a boy, this is what we did. Come to find out, I don’t like hunting. I don’t like killing animals. IF I have to , I will to survive. This is a change I am talking about. Same with abortion for me, and other concepts pertaining to idea

    libsfib….ron paul has been in office for 23 yrs. Tried to pass over 600 bills. In 23 yrs he got one bill passed and you want him for president……lol lol lol lol lol

      Hey genius. Maybe Ron Paul couldn’t get bills passed has more to do with the established, unconstitutional congress that continues to torpedo this once great nation. Look at his positions and his voting record as compared to the constitution. Then do the same for Romney, Gingrich, and all the other progressive Republicans out there. Never mind the Dems…

      We complain about our corrupt government and how the MSM is essentially helping them brainwash this country. Then we turn around and join the MSM and corrupt government in bashing and marginalizing the one guy running who actually has a track record of working to end the corruption and return this country to those in power – the people.

      If you want the UN running our lives, and for us to be just like the EU, keep voting for people like Bush, Bush, Jr., Clinton, Obama, Romney, Gingrich, etc.. If you want us to be a constitutional republic – like we are supposed to be – vote for people like Ron Paul, Rand Paul, and Mike Lee.

      Stop taking political party affiliation into account when voting. Stop listening to the media. Listen to what comes out of the politicians’ mouths, then compare it to their records. Anything beyond that will give you a skewed view of who you are dealing with.

      Compare word with actions, then decide. Or continue what you have been doing, “Baaaaaahh, baaaahhhh, baaaahhhhh.”

      I agree with you JD4301. Other reasons why:
      1. Debt (16 trillion)
      2. Entitlements (social security, medicare, medicaid) The majority of our budget today, unconstitutional & social programs. These programs are Socialism.
      3. Tax code. (no one understands it, & it‘s thousand’s of pages need a flat tax on energy, since we all use it)
      4. Federal Reserve ( loaned below market rates 7.7 Trillion dollars to it’s favorite big banks with out Congress & didn’t tell anyone this was going on. Unconstitutional! From Sept 2008 to April 2009) Ron Paul is the only one even talking about this.
      5. Regulation ( 77, 000 + pages, no wonder why business are running to China)
      6. Unconstitutional Government Agency’s
      - Dept of Education (Founded in 1980 & education has gone down)
      - Dept. of Energy
      - Health & Human services
      - Housing & urban development (HUD) causing housing crash 2006 & on
      - Department of Labor (a Democrat agency keeping millions on welfare)
      In a debate Rick Perry tried to remember three of these unconstitutional government agency’s & could only remember two of them, Ron Paul corrected him & named all five.
      7. Our military (God bless them) is drawn out every where, we need to conserve them to our own borders, we don’t have any money to have them stationed & fighting all over the world.)

      maybe they didn’t get to the floor for a vote. wonder why? I read some of the bills he wrote, and from what I read, they were all good, and protected our rights. Folks, I hate to tell you, but the NWO is now in charge. Republicans are voting on bills that take our rights away under the Constitution and Bill of Rights. I believe them and ther families are being threatened, if they don’t go along. What about Sara Palin? I believe they got to het too, because you don’t hear as much from her anymore either.

      I looked up some of the Bills Paul wrote, and from what I have seen, they were all good bills to protect the people, The Republicans have been bought or threatened. They just keep voting on legislation that takes our rights away. I do believe the NWO is now calling the moves, Wonder what happened to sarah palin? You think they might have gotten to her too? You don’t hear a lot coming from her anymore. I will vote for Ron Paul. He will try and put the Constitution back together, for now it has been shredded to pieces.

    Fos news….which I like….has put their obvious approval of Romney. Like Obama he is getting a free pass from their press. No hard ball questions about his record. But they sure have gotten on every other candidate. I am a bit sceptical of what they report now. I am tired of seeing the RNC pushing Romney cause they are afraid of Newt or anyone else. Guess which person will really clean house..NOT ROMNEY. Fox has betrayed us with Carl Rove pushing it and Krauthammer…wow who would have thought. Fair and Balanced media my rear.

      Totally agree…why are they taking this little pep talk…at an asphalt plant no less, to be a broad sweeping message that Romney is going to walk away with it all? Of course he has to believe he can pull it off, and project that message to those who may vote for him. Have you heard any candidate saying things like…”Well folks..we might just be able to maybe, possibly, get a few votes here and there is for sure more than a snowballs chance in he** that we might even win this thing…” OF COURSE NOT!!       And, Mitt is weaseling at the same time he is flipping. Mitt only promised to give waivers to all 50 states for ObamaCare, he did not say he would repeal it. So what happens the next year or the year after that? Mitt or someone else doesn’t give the states waivers. It is the old lying political game that has gone on for years.       Romney did a weasel flip on ObamaCare. He said only that he would grant waivers to all 50 states; Romney did not say he would repeal ObamaCare. There is a big difference in repeal and giving waivers. Romney might not see fit to giving waivers after the first year, or some other president might not give the waivers. The waivers are just a stall, in order to avoid repeal. Avoid RINO Romney. Vote for Ron Paul!

He guarenteed wining Iowa yesterday…today he said, “I never mentioned a guarenteed win in Iowa”. WOW…talk about indecisive. As a Reagan conservative…is this who we really want as a GOP prez? If Mitt wins the GOP prez nominee…all the Dem Libs are salivating, because BHO is GUARANTEED A 2nd term.

      When I heard this live, and my first impression, was that he was speaking of the “Nomination”.
      To compare this to Namath’s emphatic “guarantee” is just idiotic.

      Mitt has stated for weeks, 1st, 2nd or 3rd is a win, particulary now that Newt and Perry appear weakened.

      In the end, Politics has to shift to Pragmatic Mode.
      Mitt, is the only one, in current polls, who can beat Obama.

      If you have ever researched Mitt’s position on abortion, you will always find that personally he has been against abortion except for cases of rape and incest or serious risk to the health of the mother. He has, however, changed his view on how the federal government and the states should handle the entire abortion issue. This came from a personal experience regarding someone close to his family that died from an illegal abortion. From that point forward, he and his mother decided to never again force their personal views about abortion onto another person. Rather, they support that to be an individual choice. He sill does, and always has been a staunch supporter of the states being the ones to decide what they will allow in terms of abortion, and that the Federal government should stay out of the decision. So I can’t call that a flip-flop for elections sake. But hey, I will let you do your own research and make up your own mind on that one.

      This is for Justin. I sit on the fence about abortions. Although I blieve life is formed at conception, I am afraid if women can’t have a doctor to perform the abortion, she may go to someone to do it that isn’t a doctor, and doesn’t know what he or she is doing, and put the womans life in jeporady. It is a stivky subject. I believe there should be some doctors allowed to perform abortions, but I think they should use every thing at their disposal to try and get the woman to keep the child or put it up for adoption. After onee abortion, then that person shouldn’t be able to get any more. Abortion shouldn’t be used as birth cantrol.

    Wow–take what a person says during a pep talk and extrapolate this to a live or die statement. All of the people who don’t like Romney hop on this like a buzzard attacking a rancid piece of meat. The reality is that there is a VERY good chance that he will end up as the Republican nominee. I and many other will gladly pull the lever for him. Many will be forced to hold their nose while they pull the lever. If that ends up to be true, there is a VERY good chance that he will be the next president. Remember that all of the republican candiates will be better than the present occupier of the oval office. If you don’t like Romney, then fight for your guy or gal. But let’s not turn and eat our own.
    All of that being said, Please oh please DO NOT encourage any of the republican candiates to run third party. Any thinking person realizes that this will only ensure the present occupier witll be in place for 4 more years. At that time he will have no reason what so ever hold back as he has for the last little while in an attempt to get re-elected.

      I am a Romney supporter if he is our candidate. I could vote any of the republican candidates. There is a lot about each of the candidates that scare me at times. But the bottom line is that the future of the republic as we know it is in peril. If we have another 4 years of BHO we may never recover. We have to remove this guy from office. He is counter to the way that any thinking person would think that things should be. Up is down; red is green; good is bad.

      You must have the ball to beable to run with the ball. If BHO has the ball it does not matter if we personally liked a candiate that did not win the primary and then sit it out and pout. I will commit to vote for my least desired republican of the ones running if it comes to that. The same should be for those who want Romney, Paul or ….. We just can’t stand another 4 years of BHO.

      I beg to differ with anyone who thinks that any of the Republican candidates are just more of the same. BHO will ruin our country as his goal. The Republican Candidate as a minimum not have that as his committed goal.

      Romney has already been called the unelectable candidate because we willl not continue to hold our noses. We will elect a Republican House and Senate to curb Obama, but we will cast a principled Conservative vote for president. Romney does not and cannot get a lot of the Conservative vote. There is no use in putting a Republican Obama in office.

      Obama will use this for sure. They can’t wait to get Romney as their opponent. Again the repulicans are giving away the White House….all because Newt didn’t agree with all they wanted. He did a good job when he was speaker..they tried to fine him and it was rescinded. He works with both parties. WE need this for America to become strong again. Go for Newt. Later we can find pretty candidates after Newt repairs America. Get rid of Obama and his czars.       Give me a break. He worked for a firm and his job was to take a company, make it lean and mean, and sell it. No different than buying a house and flipping it. You cant blame him or Bain for laying people off in the process of making a company more profitable and competitive. If there were a buyer interested in the company after that, whats the big deal? And what makes him responsible for the actions of the buyer after the fact? I have watched people take over a business and run it into the ground in less than a year. And the same process is repeated day in and day out by hordes of companies. I watched Walgreens buy up local drug stores or threaten to build across the street and put them out of business. Not cool, but thats what happens. Its called business. Business is in business to make a profit first, not to provide jobs and hope to make a profit. No profit, no business, no job. It’s that simple.

      (Romney) shrunk Massachusetts state government powers, agencies, and laid off state workers.

      (Romney) passed the Arizona bill in 2006.
      (Romney) never voted to regulating the Internet.
      (Romney) is strong on defense.

      Ron Paul loves earmarks, labeled ‘Earmark King,’ most came from bills he put them in though he would never vote for those bills. Pork is Pork.

      Again, Vote Santorum, he is the most conservative. If he doesn’t win Iowa then fall back on Romney.

      @Drak…I get so tired of the obamacare/romneycare debate using the rising cost of health care in Massachusetts as proof that Romneycare is a failure. Show me a state in the union that has not seen a dramatic hike in health insurance rates in the last 8 years….come on…show me. We have ALL had health insurance rates skyrocket so save us all from the red herring please. And as I have stated before, Just because Obama and his pals used the Massachusetts Health Plan as a framework for a National plan does not make Romney responsible for it. He himself stated that it should be up to each individual state to decide how to handle it’s own health care and the fiscal problems that are related to it. He is not some evil genius hooked in with the Illuminati or any other nameless shadowy organization surreptitiously striving for some ‘New World Order’. Get real dude.

      My favorite video is from a Tea Party group showing that these supposed flip-flops span from clips that cut out the meat of the quote to make him look bad. The one on their homepage is about his consistent smooth conversion on abortion. http://www.TeaPartyforRomney.com .

      Again I will state, now that Santorum is surging we should get behind him. Before his surge I had to find a second choice and Romney would be that, but Santorum is my first.

    There is a difference between hype, like a coach does to his players and a prediction.

    The first video is definitely a hype video, he is rallying the troops. Like everyone does, “We are going to win this election”

    The second video is a question/prediction of the results. You heard the same thing from Ron Paul.

    Uhh I think this is a little different, He didn’t say he was going to win Iowa, but that he would “win this thing and go all the way”. What presidential candidate doesn’t say that?

    Come on guys, lets get real and not jump on the “I want a perfect conservative” bandwagon. 4 years ago Mitt Romney was the conservative in the race. We must admit that the republican party has moved far to the right over the last 5 years. pretty much every candidate would be a flip-flopper except for Ron Paul.

      Romney’s father was born poor and did not go to college but still became CEO of a major automobile company. Do you have a thing against people who earn their success?
      Romney’s family did earn their wealth but Romney did not squander his wealth. He graduated number one in economics from Brigham Young and he graduated from Harvard with a Law degree and an MBA and he was also near the top of those classes too.

      He went on to use those brains to earn 100′s of millions of dollars in the private sector restructuring companies.

      You must be either a Democrat,Communist or Socialist since you begrudge Romney for being rich and successful who happened to earn the bulk of his wealth.

      The polls are meaningless, only complete idiots will vote for Obama, we may be doomed, most of the north is full of idiots and believe the lies told to them by the government unquestionably. The south has enough blacks and illegals to pretty much cancel out the votes of the freedom loving informed people of the south.
