Mitt Romney made his appeal to black voters on Wednesday, addressing the NAACP National Conference where he argued that life is “worse for African-Americans in almost every way” under President Obama.
His reception was lukewarm and paled in comparison to the welcoming Attorney General Eric Holder received on Tuesday, leaving the stage to chants of “Holder! Holder! Holder!” Needless to say, there were no chants of “Romney.” Quite the opposite actually, as he was booed multiple times by a seemingly hostile audience.
“I am running for president because I know that my policies and vision will help hundreds of millions of middle class Americans of all races, will lift people from poverty, and will help prevent people from becoming poor. My campaign is about helping the people who need help. The course the president has set has not done that — and will not do that. My course will,” he said.
(Related: Black Caucus Chair: Romney Shouldn’t Have Bashed Obamacare in Front of NAACP Audience)
Romney was booed emphatically after saying he would repeal “Obamacare.” He quickly backtracked and said he would replace the health care law with something else that also covered children with preexisting conditions and cited a survey conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that indicated that Obamacare would be harmful to America’s businesses and would make them less likely to hire.
You can watch the crowd turn on Romney over Obamacare here:
He was booed a second time when he criticized President Obama for not doing enough to create jobs.
“If you want a president who is going to make things better in the African-American community, you are looking at him,” Romney said, drawing even more boos.
However, for the most part, Romney hammered on the economy. He specifically addressed Black unemployment, which is nearly double the national average. He did so by couching an argument that there is not economic “equal opportunity” in America when one group suffers unemployment on such a scale.
“If equal opportunity in America were an accomplished fact, then a chronically bad economy would be equally bad for everyone. Instead, it’s worse for African Americans in almost every way. The unemployment rate, the duration of unemployment, average income, and median family wealth are all worse for the black community. In June, while the overall unemployment rate remained stuck at 8.2 percent, the unemployment rate for African Americans actually went up, from 13.6 percent to 14.4 percent.”
Romney also used the equal opportunity argument to hammer against the teachers unions, which he referred to as “special interests” holding back our education system.
“The African-American community has been waiting and waiting for that promise to be kept. Today, black children are 17 percent of students nationwide – but they are 42 percent of the students in our worst-performing schools.
When it comes to education reform, candidates cannot have it both ways – talking up education reform, while indulging the same groups that are blocking reform. You can be the voice of disadvantaged public-school students, or you can be the protector of special interests like the teachers unions, but you can’t be both.”
Romney made sure to define that his policies will help families “of any color“ and that beyond the rhetoric fiscal conservatism will be a greater economic service to the African-American community than the policies of our President.
“I want you to know that if I did not believe that my policies and my leadership would help families of color — and families of any color — more than the policies and leadership of President Obama, I would not be running for president.”
President Obama, citing a schedule conflict, will not speak at the NAACP conference. However, Vice President Joe Biden is expected to speak in his place on Thursday.
It was a tough sell for Romney — roughly 95 percent of blacks supported Obama in 2008 — but he deserves credit for getting up on the stage and delivering his remarks.
“I believe, that if you understood who I truly am in my heart… you would vote for me for president,” Romney said. Watch all of Romney’s NAACP speech via PBS, below.

We live in a benevolent autocracy and any notion that you have freedom is an illusion. It is much easier to be a slave, it is much easier to be attached to the teat of that Syphilitic senile crazy dictator Uncle Sam than seek liberty and economic opportunity. Divide that amount by the number of school children.
Give half that amount to parents in the way of a voucher for each child they have.
Let them choose what schools to attend.

You point out one of the primary drivers for the state of the Black Community today. If you want to guarantee yourself into poverty, all you have to do is drop out of highschool…..and if your a woman…drop out of highschool and have a kid for someone that you aren’t married to, and who doesn’t support you.
All one has to do is look at graduation rates & statistics on children born in single parent homes within the black community to see there is a SERIOUS problem within the black community. Is it any surprise that Rap Music (a staple in the black pop culture) glorifies thug culture, objectifying women, making money via gang banging & drug dealing. Percentage of children born out of wedlock within the black community has risen from 25% in the 50′s to something closer to 75% in the early 2000s. Coincidence? Yet, any black person that lectures their own community to be respectful men & women, and clean their own house get labeled as Uncle Toms, Oreos…and otherwise are excommunicated from the community.
THIS dynamic is one of the BIG differences between racial minority groups like Asians and Blacks.
Until the black community is willing to take a serious look inward on how they view women, self respect, and respect for others…..not much will change. And groups like the NAACP will make sure that people that HAVE figured out how to get out of the hood are silenced.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 2:49pm@Therightsofbilly I’ll try and go slow here. Uncompensated Care as it is called is a recognized expense/cost of hospitals and physicians. Where possible it is offset by higher rates to private insurance and to a lesser extent Medicare, and even lesser depending on the state Medicaid. Uncompensated care was figured into the Medicaid rates in NY. Physicians can recognize uncompensated care as bad debt and it is therefor a business deduction on their taxes. So yes one way or the other we ALL cover the cost of the uninsured. And because our distinctly ethical health insurance companies do whatever they can to drop sick people, they are over represented in the uninsured population. And it is well known that the uninsured delay medical care and drop their medications due to lack of money. The result is that they get hospitalized more often and are sicker when they are hospitalized. Which means of course they utilize more resources. There is and has never been a rational financial, social or medical economics argument against universal coverage and even Nixon understood that when he proposed it.

I have said the same thing many times, not only about Asians, who put a remarkable amount of emphasis on education, but about every ethnic group that came to our shores. My grand parents on both sides immigrated from Europe., all four were dirt poor and had a language and culture barrier to overcome My parents, being first generation Americans, studied hard, worked non stop and were business owners by their 20′s. I had a work ethic instilled in me and was helping in the restaurant by the time I was 7 years old. To this day I have maintained a healthy respect for the dignity that work brings. When a person is made a ward of the state, they loose the dignity that defines their humanity. They become resentful and turn on their benefactors, witness the O.W.S. people. We are now to the point where the parasites are consuming the host. And the sloth that defines them is nourished by the democrat party. This may be the death knell of America. That would seem to me to be a sort of ‘hidden tax” on the poor & downtrodden middle class working folks. You know, the ones you claim to be standing up for all the time.
This allows the government to collect more tax revenues from the little guy.

It is going to be a close race. Nothing much is going to change even if Romney is elected. You have to be dumb to think otherwise.
Roosevelt established a number of new social programs and America had its greatest boom. Reagen had implemented tax cuts and we had a good boom too. Conservatives and Liberals both contributed a lot to the greatness of America and they will continue to do so.

You make some good points but I have some good responses for you.
Social Security – Yes it started with 16- 1 but now it is 3 -1. You are right they get bloated b/c folks are living longer but we have found solutions. It is funded (100% payout) till 2036 and an additional year to retirement age every 4 years can solve this issue too.
HealthCare – Current systems is failure. We spend twice as much but the outcome is dismal (25th in the world). In last decade Healthcare expenses had gone up by 10% per year and our care is rationed by Insurance company. Look at Canadians they have Universal care, their cost is half and folks (80+%) love it.
States can be bastion for innovations on Healthcare but it will have to be Federal solution. Only if MA has RomneyCare then it becomes a magnet for sick folks from other states. It will collapse RomneyCare in the future.
Business – Demand is more important for them, A few % points increase in taxes that will help reduce the debt is supported by most business. They support Simpson Bowles
There are good conservative ideas and good liberal ones too. The country is divided 50-50 too. We have solve them by comprising now or later. It only gets worse the longer we wait.

The education system hasn’t been touched (and is protected by teacher unions – friends of Obama) and inner city black kids continue to get churned out of fail factorys…right into the hands of thugs & gang culture. Obama’s backdoor amnesty to illegal aliens compete for THE SAME jobs many poor inner city black folks are left with (SEE POOR EDUCATION ABOVE).
The ONLY thing Obama’s administration has done for Blacks is give them paltry handouts to make their difficult lives a little more tolerable. It does NOTHING to improve these people’s situation. At the end of the day, they recieve a little more money through government programs…but are still poor & living in dangerous & difficult situations.
Romney may or may not have the policies to improve their lives…..but you can say without a doubt, Obama has failed the black community. The Facts don’t lie.

That does not mean the lesser of their two evils isn’t going to be Obama, or that Obama isn’t creating a culture of dependency. Why I believe Romney got boos from the NCAAP is because he broke from his standard rhetoric (the stuff he tells us white folk) to address THEM. He not only panders to them openly, but when he speaks to them he adopts the black voice inflections. It‘s pandering at its’ worst. BTW the reason why Romney got booed is the exact opposite of the reason you stated. He gave his standard speech but he spoke to them as a demographic which is common in a campaign, addressing their unique concerns. But he did NOT deviate from his stump speech on topics and principles. He stated his opposition to the health care law and the higher taxes on the job creators, which both drew a negative reaction.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 12:10pmNo, Obama doesn’t plan to re-enact slavery. He and Bill Gates want to get rid of them all. Go back to Africa or fill a body bag. Watch this video by a black man, not a “whitie.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBTixqz7ln8&feature=relmfu

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 11:33amNo surprise he was booed for pointing out the facts. Remember, you only confuse dems and liberals when you present the facts. Got to give the man credit for showing up and standing before this hostile and somewhat racist crowd. More so than Obama is doing.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 12:02pmI agree. Romney deserves credit for going into the lion’s den of brainless liberals.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 4:57pmOh Mitt, overturning Obamacare is SOOOOOOOOOOOO 5 minutes ago,
How about jobs jobs jobs?
Or maybe you can go back to getting rid of Planned Parenthood?
Oh, that’s right -you never said that.
How much is Obama paying to to throw the election? I think they are certainly getting their money’s worth!

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 11:32amWell duh. He went to an organization that is explicitly racist, their very name demonstrates this. What did he expect, a round of huzzahs and cheers from people who are intentionally cordoning themselves off by race from the rest of the nation?
I don’t like Romney, but no GOP or Libertarian has a chance inside of the NAACP or any other explicitly racist organization. Best to let them stew in their own hate and focus on the voters whose minds one can change.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 2:38pmThey did cheer him on some things. Although, I’m not 100% sure that’s any better for Romney, in the scheme of things.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 11:32amHostile audience, of course it was a hostile audience. If Obama were speaking to the tea party what would one expect. And why is he there, seems like harry Cary to me.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 11:30amSorry, Mitt, speaking to the NAACP was a waste of your time and a poor decision. It was a lose/lose proposition and you lost. The people in that room are fully pre-programmed to vote Democrat, not to mention Black Democrat. You never had a chance.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 8:18pmA lesson for Romney at the NAACP
Obama and Biden visited a zoo during one of their trips abroad. Biden threw in some bananas to the monkeys. They ignored him and the banana and walked away.
Obama threw in his banana, the monkeys jumped and devoured the banana.
Biden was confused. “What kind of trick did you play?”, he asked Obama
“No trick! Don’t you know that blood is thicker than water?”

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 11:39amWhen you have schools filled with Commie teachers and dolts like Jesse Jackson filling heads, the anger of the Blacks is what you get. Fortunately there are many more Blacks coming out of that victimization mental head set and proving that they can succeed as well as anyone else. IT’S not color that separates people…it’s effort, discipline and faith. I applaud him for going and his words WILL resonate with many. Romney has the guts it takes to turn this Nation around!
