Romney Files for Tax Extension

Mitt Romney filed for an extension for his 2011 tax returns, his campaign announced Friday.

In a statement, the Romney campaign said the extension is “similar to what he has done in prior years.”

Romney will file and release his 2011 tax return “sometime in the next six months, and prior to the general election,” the campaign said.

The announcement came hours after President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden released their 2011 tax returns.

According to The Hill, the Romney’s extension estimated his total tax liability to be $3.2 million and that he paid an estimated tax of $887,000 with the extension.

Romney released his 2010 tax return in January amid mounting pressure on the campaign trail to do so.

Just think, Romney owes approximately $3.2 million in taxes, and Obama and Hillary just gave the Muslim Brotherhood $1.5 BILLION. Every single penny that Romney paid could go to the Muslim Brotherhood and that still doesn’t even come close to how much Obama and Hillary freely doled out. How many of us have worked for and entire year and every penny of our taxes went to a bunch of terrorists and didn’t even go to our OWN country??? Think about it…

Good point. But still … it‘s disappointing that the man’s CPA can’t get his taxes in on time. Come to think of it, wouldn’t he be required to file his taxes quarterly, instead of annually like the rest of us dolts?

@Look4dbigpicture, everybody’s tax returns are different. Filing an extension is extremely common and does not reflect any kind of financial trouble or indicate an effort to try to hide anything, etc. Romney probably files an ESTIMATED quarterly return, and then on an annual basis he pays the balance that was not included in the previous estimate. People who work on commission, etc. have no idea what their ACTUAL income will be because they don’t receive a salary, therefore, all they can do is estimate what they think it will be. Sometimes they pay more than what they thought they would earn and sometimes they pay less, but whatever it ends up being gets cleared up in the end on an annual basis.

The Tax extension is NOT the problem.. I have done it in past years.

The Problem is……. It will be used against him… Don’t you see this….

They will say he is holding back until after the primary. It is Ok for a Democrat to do this but it will hurt the Republican party.

The Liberal Media wanted us to pick a Candidate – it looks like we picked Romney – Romney will release his Returns soon and it will be discovered that he misappropriated Campaign funds – Obama win!

America will be taken down by Romney an his Accountant working together with Obama.

Maybe Newt should stay in until Romney releases his Tax Returns and they are checked – I just never really trusted Romney!

His taxes won‘t tell us anything we don’t already know. He has money, he pays taxes, he contributes a bunch to charity. More than I can say for obama and biden. Millions of Americans file for extensions every year. While obama and his cohorts will try to make hay out if it, they are off the topic of other things. So let them go and harp on it for months, and divert things. Romney can pull a Donald Trump and say when he sees obama’s school records and transcripts he will produce his tax return. Even then he doesn’t have to “The thing is, Romney doesn’t have to release anything if he doesn’t want to. Legally, tax returns are private. Presidential hopefuls must only file a financial disclosure report to the Office of Government Ethics, and Romney did that.” So, they can gripe all they want to. We griped about obamas records and they never came out, and he was still elected. We all know he has money, so what, that isn’t a crime either.

Romney has a staff of financial advisors overseeing his estates – his tax return is already complete.

He has delayed it so that he doesnt have to face the heat until the primary is over. Some leadership, huh? The extension doesnt improve his chances against obama, it decreases them.

Stop second guessing him…your second guesses are wrong. I am so tired of the losses and devastation I’ve seen in my own family over the last 3 1/2 years…this cannot continue and Romney won’t allow it to continue. Same companies that backed Obama! They are the same.

Let’s look at Credit Suiise Group. “In 2009, Credit Suisse settled on charges that it violated sanctions regulating financial transactions with IRAN!! The charges included “stripping”, the practice of removing the identity and origin of funds used in transactions. Credit Suisse employees stripped the identities of Iranian banks enabling funds to be transferred to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran and the Aerospace Industries Organization, entities respectively involved in the production of nuclear weapons and long range missiles!!” Wow, I would love to have them filling my pockets, wouldn’t you?

Romney’s tax returns from now back to his student days will be a heavy read. Most of us fall to default positions, taking the easy route of claiming standard deductions etc. but you can count on two things, Romney will be found to be consistent in his donations to charity, always well over 10%, and his tax accountants will have taken full advantage of our baroque tax code to avoid paying any extra taxes. Like most conservatives, and from recent indications, Obama himself, Romney prefers to manage his own giving instead of counting on the government to take care of everything.

Well said Okishdu. I have also had to extend my tax returns 18 out of the last 20 years. It is very common. Hopefully if the lamestream media try to make a big deal out of this Governor Romney will set them straight and get the message out that it is the idiotic IRS tax code that is the problem, not him.
By the way, once he releases his returns, as you mentioned his returns will show that he will have paid very generously to charity and he will have paid in taxes exactly what the current tax law demands. His returns will show that he took advantage of many “loopholes” and he will get blasted for that for a few days if the news is slow. Well, Romney didn’t put the loopholes in there. Loopholes in tax code were put in there by congress and any one of us who becomes successful in business would want to utilize them to minimize our taxes. His federal taxes will probably amount to about 16% of his millions of dollars of income. The class warfare liberals will also make his low “Buffett-like” percentage the followup issue. Mitt Romney is a smart enough businessman and employs savvy enough accountants to insure that he won’t pay more to the federal government than what the current tax laws require him to pay. None of us will voluntarily pay more to the IRS than what we absolutely have to–even Buffett the Savior of America that he is (ha) doesn’t give the US Treasury his extra millions just so that he can match the 32% in Federal taxes that I pay. Cheap SOB

      Posted on April 15, 2012 at 1:41am

It doesn’t make me mad at Romney (or Buffett) that their tax percentage is a lot lower than mine because that is the way the law reads. Of course I wish that I only had to pay 15% rather than 32% (I’m not a dumba$$) but I don’t make money by investing in companies. I make it by fixing teeth. which is unfortunately taxed at double the rate of Capital Gains in my case. One reason Capital Gains income is taxed lower is to encourage people to invest in other companies.

There are negatives to making money the way Romney and Buffett do. It seems like those fellows have it easy just living off of other people’s hard work, and when they choose wisely, investing can be very successful (and have a very low tax rate). However, to make a living off of Capital Gains income involves a lot of risk and that type of income can fluctuate wildly and disappear entirely when the markets and investments fall or go kaput. Do I wish that I paid only a 15% federal income tax rate? Of course! Do I wish that the Capital Gains tax rate was higher to make Romney and Buffett pay the same rate as I do so tax percentages are “fair”? (boo hoo you occupy slackers) No way! Even though I don’t yet make any money off of investments in other companies except my own, I hope that someday I may be able to. If I risk my own hard earned (and already once income taxed) money in a company that does well and makes me money–it WON’T be fair at all if my dividends are taxed AGAIN at a 32% rate.

I heard the speech as well, and even though Romney was not my first choice, the speech was very well spoken and he will make a FAR better president than BO. Those of you who say that you will not vote for Romney because he is Mormon or because of his moderate past or his flip-flopping, please just overlook these differences and get on board and talk positive about him so that we can stop the Obamiation! I really didn’t like McCain either, but I guarantee that America would be a lot better now if more folks would have just sucked it up and got on the bandwagon and put him into the oval office instead of the Socialist who is now there. Romney will be the nominee, and even if you really hate everything about him and even if he makes you want to be sick, I assure you, I PROMISE you that if you and your friends don’t get out and stand in line and vote for him and we end up allowing BHO another 4 years in a second term, America will never recover and the Proud United States of America that we love will shrivel and perhaps even die. The USA will become even worse off than the socialist European Countries if we don’t manage to get Romney elected. So from one non-Romney fan to all of you Romney haters out there: If you are a patriot and love America, please ignore the reasons that you dislike Mitt and try to tell as many people as possible to vote for him. If you can’t bring yourself to say good stuff about Romney, just tell everyone you know to vote for “the Republican”.

Swampy you are full of crap. Stop making up drivel. Romney CAN beat Obama if we all stop bitching about what we didn’t like about him and join together now–not as Romney-fans but as conservatives and patriots and help get him elected just so that we can get OBAMA OUT. I promise that for all his failings, Romney is not anywhere as bad as Obama and especially a lame-duck Obama with nothing to lose by becoming WAY more radical in his final 4 years. This first four years was Obama being moderate and basically just spending the entire first term just campaigning to get elected to the second term. Once elected (if we allow our disdain for Romney to let that happen) Obama will show his true evil Socialist agenda and communist philosophy.

AND I honestly don’t care…Romney can make all the money he wants.
..maybe we need someone that knows how to make money in charge…wouldn’t that would novel…
What i do find disconcerting is the Romney camp should know better than give Obama fodder. Sometimes I wonder if the Republicans actually want to win.

More questions than answers .. Presidents in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!

Or we could start with Ron Paul’s lack of Conservatism and concentrate on his what… neo-liberalism as opposed to Romney who was a Governor in a liberal state working “for” a very liberal demographic?

I thought Ron Paul supporters were all about the states? Ron Paul would pass the buck to the states now wouldn‘t he so he wouldn’t have to make hard decisions? Abortion, drug legalization, gay marriage? You know… that liberal stuff…

You’re right. Ron Paul isn’t a (neo) conservative. He is a libertarian, which is closer to classical liberalism than modern conservatism. Classical liberalism was the politcal ideaology of the majority of the founding fathers. Classical liberalism is not to be confused with modern liberalism, which has nothing in common with the views of the founding fathers. The progressives adopted the term “liberal” as a means to make their radical views easier for the American people to digest. Their plan worked very well, as the platforms for BOTH parties contain the key points of the progressive agenda. In fact, the current republican party foreign policy is a progressive policy. Interventionism is the policy of Woodrow Wilson. There is a common intersection between the open/no boder movement of the left and the policman of the world/interventionists on the right; That intersection is global government/global currency. Both the left and the right are achieving the same foreign policy goals. You guys may bicker over issues like marriage and abortion but the real damage to our economy is being done with the consent of both the left and the right.

Can you not think for yourself? You always post the same links on every thread involving either Ron Paul or libertarianism. Go ahead and debate something that i’ve said. I guess that its easier for you to just copy and paste stuff than it is to actually think for yourself.
My point about Romney was not about states rights. My point was about consistency and character. I just don’t buy the whole “the only reason that i supported abortion and gun control was because i was the Gov. of a liberal state, but now that i am running for national office i am against abortion and against gun control” thing. If you want to vote for someone who constantly changes his views to fit what is in his best politcal interests at that particular moment, that’s fine with me. I, however, can’t do that.
Also, lets not talk about racism, pal. There is enough racist skeletons in both the republican and democrat closets to go around. No party is immune to racism or stupidity.

I wasn’t talking about any individual politican, but rather members of the respective parties in general.
For instance, the majority of the people in my neck of the woods that don’t like black people, tend to be republicans…..not that there is anything wrong with that. That is just the way it is. We all have our prejudices. I’m open about mine. You’re the one acting overly sensitive about race. Go sing kumbaya with Al Sharpton if you care so deeply about healing the racial divide.
If you want to talk party affiliation, lets talk about the democrats. The democrats are the party of KKK. Nothing that you can scrape up on the libertarians can compare to the Klan and the southern democrats.
If you want to drop names, lets talk about Robert Byrd (d), Strom Thurmond (r), Maxine Waters (d), Bobby Rush (d), Jesse Helms (r), etc. All racists. I can keep going if you’d like.
How about Barack Obama, who sat in the pews of a racist preacher who spewed racist black liberation theology for over 20 years. He was married by that racist and his children were baptized by him. That is far worse than anything that Ron Paul supposedly said.

A dry well for the left. An extension is routine in complex returns and does not the delay the payment of taxes. Because Romney is a successful businessman his tax return is complex, but that’s a problem with the tax code, not the tax payer.

Anyone who thinks this is a story has no idea what filing an extension means. Especially considering brokerage statements were coming back with changes all the way into march and these make up the brunt of Romney’s taxes. He paid all his tax obligation to the best of calculation (and will pay a penalty if more is owed), so there isn’t anything here to critique.

That’s true. The IRS issued reporting instructions to brokerages that were incompatible with those issued to tax preparers. As a result, many tax preparers are STRONGLY recommending that those with 1099′s from brokerages file for an extension until the matter is corrected. See: http://tradertax.com/

We have an actual tax cheat as O’s Treasury Sec. The hypocrisy of the left never ceases to amaze. I would not think Romney would knowingly cheat on his taxes. There are so many tax regs and changes to those regs over the years……it is highly possible there is a flaw on one of his returns that the O campaign will make an issue out of while the continue to push his wealth and class warfare.

Again, DIS, I’m voting for Romney if he is the nominee. He just wasn’t my first choice…..his policies are more liberal for my preference and he seems too polished. Ann made Mitt more like-able and personable. He just doesn’t seem to be a candidate that will have Conservatives rushing to the polls. And the O campaign, with the help of the media, are going to publicly shred him. The fickle-minded among us will take that bait and likely not vote for either. I hope I’m wrong. Time will tell.

      @copatriots

The first two lines of your post about left tax cheats…exactly. Don’t understand why conservatives/republicans ALWAYS have to go on the defense! It is just maddening to me. Act like the adult in the room…just say, yes there is an extension of my filing of my 2k11 taxes..PERIOD..and in the next breath (example-the child says I HATE YOU..the parent says WELL, SWEETHEART,I LOVE YOU and now go clean your room) ask how is Charlie Rangel doing after his “little-tax-issue”. Some people will say….quit being passive-aggressive…but unfortunately, sometimes a conservative has to be “alittle snarky” and then smile & wait for the dem/lib reaction. It is very easy. Think like a parent talking & listening to a willful child. Don’t go on the defense unless…(fill in the blanks) you did something really wrong..against the law.
