Full Remarks: Paul Ryan Introduced as Mitt Romney’s Running Mate

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his vice presidential running mate on Saturday, turning to the architect of a deeply conservative and intensely controversial long-term budget plan to remake Medicare and cut trillions in federal spending.

In the campaign to come, Republicans will present economic solutions “that are bold, specific and achievable,” Romney said as he presented his political partner to cheering supporters. “We offer our commitment to create 12 million new jobs and bring better take home pay to middle class families.”

The two men basked in the cheers of supporters in the ticket’s made-for-television debut. “I did not make a mistake with this guy,” Romney exulted.

“I am deeply excited and honored to join you as your running mate,” Ryan said in his first words at the podium.” He said that together, “we will restore the greatness of this country.”

“Regrettably, President Obama has become part of the problem, and Mitt Romney is the solution” to an economy that has yet to make a strong recovery from the worst recession in decades, he said.

The ticket made its debut at a naval museum in Norfolk, Va., the initial stop of a bus tour through four battleground states in as many days. The USS Wisconsin, berthed at the museum, was their bunting-draped backdrop.

While word of Ryan’s selection leaked late Friday night, and was posted by the campaign to its phone app before the speeches, Obama’s campaign withheld its reaction until the Republicans had spoken.

“The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires, and deep cuts in education from Head Start to college aid,” Jim Messina, the president’s campaign manager, said in a written statement.

“His plan would also end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors,” he said.

Ryan’s selection – as well as Romney’s own nomination – will be ratified by delegates to the Republican National Convention that begins on Aug. 27 in Tampa, Fla.

Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden will be nominated for a second term at the Democratic convention the following week.

One campaign official said Romney had settled on Ryan as his pick on Aug. 1, more than a week ago, and informed Beth Myers, the longtime aide who had shepherded the secretive process that led to the selection. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details.

In making his pick, Romney bypassed other potential running mates, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.

Officials said he had called all four to notify them of his decision.

At 42, Ryan is a generation younger than the 65-year-old Romney.

His conservative credentials are highly regarded by fellow Republican House members, while numerous polls found that Romney‘s own were suspect among the party’s core supporters during the primaries of winter and spring.

Watch more of the candidates’ speeches, below:

A seven-term congressman, Ryan is chairman of the House Budget Committee, and primary author of conservative tax and spending blueprints that the tea party-infused Republican majority approved over vociferous Democratic opposition in 2011 and again in 2012.

It envisions transforming Medicare into a program in which future seniors would receive government checks that they could use to purchase health insurance. Under the current program, the government directly pays doctors, hospitals and other health care providers.

Ryan and other supporters say the change is needed to prevent the program from financial calamity. Critics argue it would impose ever-increasing costs on seniors.

Other elements of the budget plan would cut projected spending for Medicaid, which provides health care for the poor, as well as food stamps, student loans and other social programs that Obama and Democrats have pledged to defend.

In all, it projected spending cuts of $5.3 trillion over a decade, and cut future projected deficits substantially.

It also envisions a far reaching overhaul of the tax code of the sort Romney has promised.

Romney and Ryan appeared unusually comfortable with each other when they campaigned together earlier in the year. The former governor eagerly shared the microphone with the younger man and they shared hamburgers at a fast food restaurant.

In making an endorsement before his state’s primary last spring, Ryan said, “I picked who I think is going to be the next president of the United States – I picked Mitt Romney. … The moment is here. The country can be saved. It is not too late to get America back on the right track. … It is not too late to save the American idea.”

Romney was the subject of an April Fools prank in which Ryan played a role. Romney showed up at a supposed campaign event where he heard Ryan calling him “the next president of the United States” – only to find the room nearly empty.

In recent days, conservative pundits have been urging Romney to choose Ryan in large part because of his authorship of a House-backed budget plan that seeks to curb overall spending on benefit programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and food stamps.

Republican National Committee finance chairman Ron Weiser of Michigan, said Friday night that Ryan’s selection would help Romney win Wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes in the fall. The state typically supports Democrats in presidential contests, and Obama won it handily four years ago.

Ryan has worked in Washington for much of his adult life, a contrast to Romney, who frequently emphasizes his experience in business.

The congressman worked as an aide in Congress, and also was a speechwriter for Jack Kemp, who years earlier had been one of the driving forces behind across-the-board tax cuts that were at the heart of Ronald Reagan’s winning presidential campaign in 1980.

Ryan is also well-known for his fiendish physical fitness workouts.

His congressional district in southeast Wisconsin has something of a bipartisan voting record. Obama took 54 percent of the vote there in 2008, while the congressman received 64 percent in winning re-election.

Outside Ryan’s home in Janesville, Wis., on Friday night, there was nothing to suggest that the residence belonged to a vice presidential candidate. An Associated Press reporter who knocked just before midnight got no answer. There was a light on in a first-floor room of the two-story brick home atop a hill.

Earlier this week, a Ryan adviser said the congressman, his wife and their three children were preparing for a weeklong Colorado vacation.

Most of Romney’s staff learned of the planned announcement during a 10 p.m. EDT conference call Friday about an hour before the campaign issued a statement. The identity of Romney’s pick was not disclosed during the call. The campaign had promised that first news of the selection would be delivered via a phone app.

Earlier in the day, Romney’s campaign briefed reporters on the bus tour without mention of the impending vice presidential announcement.

The tour will take Romney through North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Ohio. All are battlegrounds where Obama won in 2008. They hold 75 electoral votes combined, of the 270 needed to win the election.

I like Ryan, but just so everyone is clear – a true Tea Party Patriot doesn’t vote for TARP, the bailouts, the Patriot Act or the NDAA (which removes due process). The pick could have been worse and I like said I like the guy – but he will be easier to demonize by the Left than Rubio.

I like Ryan a great deal and think he is a great pick, sadly the House will miss him. He is perfect for a presidential candidate in a failing economy. Here is the best of Paul Ryan, a must see: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/aug/best_of_ryan.html

Obama is a disaster. But Romney & Ryan would vote for TARP, The Patriot Act, NDAA, bombing Iran, drone strikes, torture….I don’t see how they are any better than Obama. Romneycare is just as much of a disaster as Obamacare. There’s really no difference between Romney & Obama. In November all the slaves get to do is pick a new master. That’s it.

I guess it is baby steps time. Romney is a baby step away from the lefty in office, Ryan is a baby step away from left leaning Romney, at least it is heading in the right direction. Where the real reform of the system will come from is the House and Senate races. It is vital that Constitutional conservatives get elected in large numbers to join the ones elected in 2010. If the House is pressing a Romney WH to govern conservatively then reform will go from bumbling toddler to a even paced jogger. If you are like me and prefer an Olympic sprinter type reform I guess we keep waiting.

Unfortunately, you’re right. Medicare, Medicare, Medicare. That’s all we will hear from liberals for the next three months. If Paul was willing to take the heat, WHY didn’t he stand up as his own man and run for president?

Romney needed a charismatic politician as a running mate, and that was Rubio. I think Romney was privately told Rubio would definitely say no.

I hope to G Ryan seeks reelection for his Congressional seat, in case Barack cheats his way to a second term.

Let it go. You know who some of the greatest vets I’ve ever met were? They were the ones who don’t praddle on about their service all the time. You do your time and then you live your life. The greatest gift you can give your fallen buddies is to go and prosper. Carrying around bitterness, resentment and judging other people’s service records is just nonsense. You do your time and then you move on.

Real heroes don’t have to tell everyone what kind of hero they were. And for the record, I wasn’t a hero. I had a minor role in a war that was a total cakewalk “Desert Storm”. So if you want to talk about who killed more gooks you probably win. That isn’t really the point though now is it?

One thing that bugs me Time, is your perpetuation of having to bash any branch of the service, FTN? I would not say that about the Army, Still shows that you have disdain for the military even though you say you are a combat veteran with a Combat Infantryman Badge. I still have my doubts.

LEFT COAST, I wrote “FTN” just to see if you knew what it mean’t. I actually read that on the bottom of one of the those canvas bunks we had to sleep in while “stowed away” on board the U.S.S. Trenton. I also read it emblazened all over other parts of the ship. Someone wasn’t on graffiti duty I guess while they were on fire watch (I would have made that an additional duty for sure)…

BUT we DID have FTA in the Army. .. “Fun, travel AND adventure… lol.

I wasn’t crazy about Romney to begin with, but the more I have learned about the man and his character, as well as his resume, I do believe that he has the skills that this country desperately needs at this time. I believe that he picked an extremely compitent and compatible VP, unlike Obama who picked a clown for his “royal court”.
That being said, it is the HOUSE and the SENATE that is the KEY this election! We need to work to get the conservative candidates elected. If we get them in, I believe that Romney and Ryan will LISTEN to what WE THE PEOPLE want. Unlike Obama who is only out to further his ideology, no matter how many people he hurts.

LEFT COAST. I am not denegrating what you say your “better half‘ does for a living or that she’s even your wife. What I AM making a point of is the fact that you feel you need to bring someone into these conversations (a 3rd Party) to make a point, evaluation or to ask a question. If someone wants to know about me… tell them to join The Blaze and become a poster. If all you have is what someone else has to say or wants to know to bolster whatever it is you need to bolster… then I read BS.

And no… the “Pageant” was reserved for the lower EM… but I did my part for God, country and Neptune. Oh, and the “grog”… was nasty, but I’ve drank worse. And what’s with you guys trying to pass off rabbit as chicken? And the Marines shaking down everyone in the head? We had to knock a few “Jarheads” heads around just trying to take a freakin’ leak…

I was also assigned to a Combat Engineer unit in Panama where we performed a number of Joint Training excercises with the Navy out of Rodman Naval Base.

Wake up fellow veteran and stop buying into ourside against their side when nothing changes. If I was in the same mindset as you, I would be doing handstands and cartwheels for this pick! I haven’t seen that one since the 80s. With all I’ve said about this pick, I will vote for Romney and of course for Ryan. Anything else is a sure victory for Dear Leader who is going to win anyways by hook of by crook.

This only confirms to me that Mr. Romney does not see the larger picture and what he is REALLY up against! Atleast McCain was smart enough to pick a woman to invigerate his ticket….but come on now? He picks a White Male Anglo Saxon? I’ve nothing against my own and hear me out but this pick in light of the nature of the situation this country is in is just plain not playing good chess! Ryan is a fine gentlemen to be sure with a good record I‘m sure or we’d already know about the skeletons in his closet…so far we haven’t heard of any, but forget all that because it does not even matter for what I am getting at. Americans need to wake up and realize their country is now a full blown multiculture and his pick simply needed to be representative of that….yea I know we shouldn’t be picking people based on race…but that is exactly how Obama got into office with overwhelming support from Jews, Whites in general, and of course the Black community. Jews and Blacks normally vote Dem but the White crowd voted for him out of White guilt more or less and that is taking into account racial issues. Two White guys on the ticket may look very normal to some but after all demonization of Whites in general via the mass media does anyone really believe this was a smart pick given the nature of what we face through the voting populace? Like I have said many times here at the Blaze, this president is not going anywhere and this move will just help my predictions come true.

Calling me a racist is utterly stupid because I am merely pointing out the facts of life here. Don‘t shoot the messenger just because you don’t like hearing the message. Romney could have evened up the playing field a lil by picking yes, someone well qualified but also of color or opposite gender. I call this winning, this pick ensures victory for Obama thats all I am saying! Jackwagons? Really?

You remind me of the wife in Farneheit 451 trying to decide on how to vote and ultimately not picking the “fat one”.

Grow up and get some principle and get educated. Either you want to be free or you want to be a serf. Either you want to deal with the real issues or you want to play political games and pass the buck. If you want to get sucked into some binary construct created by the system then so be it. Then the deficits will keep coming, the debt will continue to grow and your posterity will be debt slaves to a government that YOU created in which they had no voice.

I’d rather pick a “troll” with principle than a couple of progressive statist smooth-talkers who can appease unthinging mouth-breathers like you.

I’m starting to feel that this ROTHBARDIAN is really Lew Rockwell hanging out here passing time with we Conservatives and pandering his failed Libertarian (Mises, Rothbard,Paul and Rockwell) mantra to anyone still undecided and willing to listen.

Anyways, you really don’t see Murray Rothbard mentioned all that much except in Libertarian circles where you also find chatter about Mises and Ron Paul. Rothbard (thankfully dead) was a racist, a bigot, an anarchist and anti-war zealot to the extreme.

Oh, and boy did this guy Rothbard hate Reagan with a vengence. That’s why Ron Paul hated Reagan. Like ideological Father… like ideological son.

      Spin much Time 2 end?

First of all you don’t know me from Adam. Secondly, picking and choosing pieces and parts of academic discourse and then taking it out of context is just spinning on your part. Here is Rothbards take on Reagan from his own pen. Anyone can see for themselves.

      http://libertarianchristians.com/tag/ronald-reagan/

I don’t happen to agree with all that, but then again I don’t need to explain myself to you.

Secondly, associating an idea of one person to another and then destroying the other as a means to get at the one you have current issue with is straight out of Alinsky tactics. Congrats. Goebels would be proud. Seeing as how you support RINO’s then there is obviously a connected support of GWB and the Karl Rove camp and therefore your economic doctrine is that of the Paul Wolfowitz neo-corporatism. Whoa…that IS fun. Maybe I should take a page out of you and Alinsky’s playbook and do this more often.

Nah, I better not. Anyway, let’s try to stay on the issues and facts shall we? I mean propaganda wars as a way of staying away from voting records of candidates can always be entertaining but I do think we owe it to our countrymen to actually debate principles, facts and public record…don’t you?

Gary Johnson is a lost cause along with any other 3rd Party pooper and Romney/Ryan is the only game in town. You either get behind them and support them to defeat Obama. You have nothing new to offer except the same old tired anti-Republican/Conservative/GOP commercials running in your head that you jot down here in support of Obama ultimately and nothing more. Why can’t you understand this? It isn’t about the GOP vs. the DNC or Obama vs. Romney. It’s about right and wrong and whether this country has a future. Obama should be in jail. His tyranny is inexcusable and hopefully history remembers that. He’s a lying a$$hat, totalitarian plutocrat. But just because I can‘t stand him doesn’t mean I have to accept whatever else is thrown in my face. That’s your construct not mine.

There are things that matter intensely to me. Obama is obviously a tyrant. But there I don’t see anything in the voting records of Romney or Ryan to suggest that much changes. You can’t look at their records and even begin to make a case that they are conservative. What is it somehow ok that a mouth breather shoves his hand up your wife’s skirt and porno scans you now that a republican is in the WH? Either things are wrong or they’re not.

I will not accept “well at least Romney isn’t Obama” when I’m being groped, my country is running deficits that my grandkids won’t be able to pay, my liberty is under attack and probably we’ll go poking around for more war? Why would I think that junk is OK just because it’s Romney now. You can‘t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining. I ain’t buying it. And if attacking me makes your choice more palatable then so be it. But you need to never complain about deficts, debt, tyranny, big government or liberty again. You’re endorsing them, not me.

I don‘t really have much to complain about ’BARDIAN.. I leave that to you and the rest of the Obama left to biatch about everything under the sun. I‘ve taken advantage of every opportunity I’ve ever had or was presented with. I’ve made it a habit of turning negatives into positives and have done very little to no whining along the way. This is the true Conservative way. We try to look at the glass half full, not half empty. While you are griping about whatever strikes your fancy (and some issues are valid of course)… there are those of us who are working to make things better and doing the things required in the here and now and concentrating on what we have control over to make change. You are doing zip, nada and nothing if you hand Obama a second term with your wasted support for the non-factors and also rans in ‘12. Yeah, go with that conscience of your’s. Obama, Biden and Reid will love you for it. When I see Ron Paul or Gary Johnson… all I see at this point is those two wearing a tee shirt that reads (with an arrow pointing) I’m with stupid. And stupid is their supporters.

Of course most didn’t know JP Morgan was up to to get prosecuted. Most didn‘t know the justice department 180’d, most don‘t understand fractional reserve banking or the counterparty risk component to CDO’s or CDS‘ and most don’t know wha either of those are and most don’t understand how private risk is being transfered to sovereign balance sheets by Uncle Ben.

So if you don’t understand how the game is played then I guess ignorance is bliss. Romney!!!!!

It sad when the fake conservatives on this forum think that Ryan is a fiscal conservative. We have no real choice but to vote ORomney/Ryan but if they win it will be bitter sweet. The big spending, freedom robbing, war loving cancer will still be there destroying the country … just more slowly.

great choice a person who has accomplished nothing and is now threatning to take away Americans services to increase military spending, they should have tried Governors of North Dakota, New Hamphires, or South Dakota or one of the states doing well with the economy.

WOW! Really? I’m amused at the GREAT contradiction in terms between ANYTHING Obama, and the Left represents, and your “Individualism” handle. Those terms/concepts couldn’t be greater opposites that East and West! And make no mistake! If Obama DOES win, neither you, or anyone else will have an America to call home. It will either be overrun with Sharia Law, and your head, along with 100,000′s other heads will be rolling in the streets, or it will sink, and implode on it’s massive, socialist debt. After all, that was Obama’s Master Plan in the first place.

      Uncle Buck,

Seriously, contrast the two for me? On voting records you have to look at the facts.

Big government and expansion of govt? Obama- Yes Romney – Yes Ryan- Yes
Police State growth via Patriot Act, NDAA, etc? Obama – Yes Romney Yes Ryan Yes
Gun Control? Obama – Yes, Romney – Yes Ryan – No
Govt Run Healthcare? Obama Yes Romney Yes Ryan No
Nation Building and Warmongering? Obama Yes, Romney Yes, Ryan Yes

I could go on, but I don’t really think I have to.

Meh, Ryan can withstand the slings and arrows. And many ‘services’ (read: handouts and entitlements) need be to be excised. That’s not to say I believe we should throw many at the whores in the defense industry. Those wizards have proven time and again they don’t really care if our military goes into action with over-hyped crap… as long as they have a nice, fat budget with which to play.
Not that I wish ill on Romney, but I’d like to see the ticket reversed.
And like it or not, Individualism brings up a good point: People have themselves convinced (even many on the right) that gubment owes them something and there are sacred cows which cannot and shall no be touched. This will be used by the opposition to engender fear in those who will see Ryan as a threat to their turn at the trough. Never underestimat the power of human stupidity…. or greed.

I guess this makes sense if you look at the Electoral breakdown. Wisconsin would be a nice swing state for Mitt to pick up and Rubio’s popularity and endorsement maybe enough to win Florida without him on the ticket.

Romney winning FL anyway! Leave the Senators like Rubio and Portman in place, as Senate just as important. The whole key to the US future at this point is Economics, and now their are two of them with strong economic background to undo the crap that this prez has left us with!

Undo it? Really? You think they’ll audit the Fed? You think they’ll demand monetary policy accountability? You think they’ll balance the budget? You think they’ll lower taxes? You think they’ll allow for free markets to correct asset prices?

Y’all are getting to be no better than those idiots who were duped by Hope and Change. Seriously, wake up. Look at the issues, look at the ones that REALLY matter. Look at the size of the problem and then look at the voting records of your candidates. If you honestly believe this is the solution then you’re higher than a kite.

We need very strong (and with courage and balls) Senators in place, remember the White House is only 1 piece to the overall plan to fix this country, we need more House seats and we MUST take the Senate and banish the autocratic rule of Harry Reid who’s denied every piece of useful legislative action in the Senate, he MUST be expelled and quite frank its time for him to be put out for retirement as well.

We also need to further strengthen our Governors, if we want to have any kind of Constitutional Amendments, we are going to need the numbers in the governorships, we MUST close all of the liberal loopholes and cracks in our system that Obama and the liberals have located and exploited so no party can ever use those avenues again, we must close and secure our government and never allow the liberals, commies and islamists to ever exploit them again
