Romney, Perry Spar Over Perry‘s Assertion That Social Security is a ’Ponzi Scheme’

Romney, Perry Spar Over Perrys Comment That Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme

Just minutes into CNN’s Tea Party Republican presidential debate Monday night, frontrunners Rick Perry and Mitt Romney sparred over Perry’s recent assertion that Social Security is unconstitutional and is a “Ponzi scheme.”

Romney, who stated that tens of millions of people have relied on the entitlement for over 70 years, asked Perry, “Do you still believe that Social Security should be ended as a federal program?”

“It’s time for us to get back to the constitution,” Perry replied, adding that after 70-plus years he did not believe Social Security would be outright abolished.

“We ought to have a conversation,” he added.

“We’re having that right now,” Romney said. “You’re running for president.”

Perry, who said the program is “broken” stated that he wasn’t the first to refer to Social Security a Ponzi scheme.

Romney pressed that “the term Ponzi scheme is what scared seniors” in the first place, and that it was “over the top, unnecessary and frightening to many people.”

Watch the two exchange blows below:

I will never vote for Perry; however, I deeply resent Romney’s comment that “Ponzi scheme” frightened seniors. News flash to Romney: the days of using politically correct speech (lying) are over. From young adults to geriatrics Americans want honesty and the majority of them have long known that due to the embezzlement of Congressmen Social Security is nothing more than a Ponzi scheme. Unfortunately those legislators who stole from the SS fund will never suffer the same fate as Bernie Madoff.

Romney saying that “the term Ponzi scheme is what scared seniors” in the first place, and that it was “over the top, unnecessary and frightening to many people,” PROVES that Romney is untrustworthy, a watered-down version of the hard, cold Truth and cannot be trusted to tell Americans who have been through WWI (possibly), WWII, The Korean War, Vietnam, all the way To Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya that ROMNEY knows what’s best for anyone to hear when it comes to reality.

This is “The Worst” of all politicians. Those that hold their cards to their chest and never give you the Truth straight and clean. I will NEVER vote for this man, ever, because of this character weakness and flaw. I wouldn’t go into combat with hime and I would NEVER trust him protecting my Six.

You’re DOA with me right now, Romney.

Shows Romney needs calcium suppliments to shore up his backbone.

However, you have to remember that to be a true Ponzi scheme, you have to get into it voluntarily. Its called tyranny when you are given no choice, and it is sanctioned by the misuse of law.

I think Romney did pretty well and he would get my vote if nominated. Perry lost a little ground with me. Newt did great as always but he has a DC funk all over him. Herman Cain is awesome but no chance. Paul, when he‘s right he’s right, but that’s infrequent. Santorem, can bore ‘em. Bachmann did pretty well but I just don’t feel it. Huntsman is running for VP.

Romney has the best chance in the General Election of beating Obama. I think he has learned a few lessons and understands what is at stake and what we want in a candidate and President. He has the financial, leadership and executive experience to straighten out this economy.

So, Huntsman is running for VP? Good idea, if Obumbler replaces Biden with Huntsman, though, Obumbler will lose his “impeachment-proof” position. After all, who would impeach Obumbler when he would then be replaced by a brain cancer survivor? Many forget that Biden has had some of his BRAIN REMOVED — that explains volumes.

I can’t believe you guys either. Perry accommodates Muslims and illegals, and that’s not political? Give me a break! Calling SS a “Ponzi scheme” is political suicide. Glenn can afford to say it; our presidential candidate cannot. Everyone wants to hear the truth, but there is no need to be visceral about it. We need to learn from the Word:

“For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law; to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some.” (1 Cor. 9: 19-22)

Was Paul a hypocrite? Absolutely not, but he knew how to talk to people in their own language, so they would open their hearts. It’s what God does too. A good presidential candidate will apply this godly wisdom to the political arena. It’s not about lying/sugar-coating issues. It means you don’t give seniors a heart attack when you tell them the truth about SS. If you can’t part with brutal and blunt, fine. Just don’t blame the weak when they clutch onto Obum for dear life.

Not to say it is unimportant, but if the focus were taken off of the SSI issue and placed on the economic issue the latter may make the former more effectively manageable. Take your eye off the bouncy ball put in front of us and look at the behind the scenes regulations that are strangling our prosperity at every turn. This is compounded by the Feds monetizing our debt which is compounded by the use of corn as a fuel. This administration has created the perfect storm for U S failure. SSI won’t matter if we continue down the path we are on.

As for Perry, he raised taxes for Texas in an obscene amount.and his heath care bites., leaves consumers footing a whole lot more of the bill. As far as Perry and Romney talking about Social Security.. it was voted in the Supreme Court that it was not a contract between the people and the government and that the government could do anything they choose. wth the money which is morally wrong and we should make them accountable , to reverse that decision and place that money in the coufer. As for illegals.we are spending 338.3 billion on them a year in the form of medicade, welfare and social programs, education just of primary and middle school, incarceration and them sending money back to their own countries. We need a change.Romney and Perry are pretty..but not good Presidential material.

How could we possibly trust either one to carry the conservative water once in the White House? Perry would be using executive orders for “our own good”, allowing the borders to remain open, and giving ear to his former Democrat “buds”. Romney would be tweaking Obamacare instead of ridding us of it, and avoiding any major changes in the “third rail”. Heaven help us – we’re about to shoot ourselves in the foot AGAIN! While the three of them were squabbling over how many jobs THEY created as governors, Newt reminded everyone that government doesn’t create squat. They get out of the way of the AMERICAN CITIZENS who, in turn, create jobs.

Perry and Romney’s attitudes that *THEY* created jobs just goes to show they are just as Rhinoish as McCain, Graham and Snow.

You’re absolutely correct in your first point Unfortunately, the vast majority of current SSN pensioners don’t act out of any political or ideological sense when they vote… most of them grew up believing they “earned” the right to their Social Security benefits while they dutifully paid their “fair share” of taxes all of their working lives.

The problem is, unlike other Ponzi scheme victims, they (and we younger workers, unless, of course, you’re part of a “priveledged” class of public-sector employees ) don’t have the option to stop making personal “investments” into the government run scheme. Mental illness has nothing to do with it.

Those who deny the truth that Social Security is, IN FACT, nothing more than a (non-profit and arguably noble) government-sanctioned Ponzi scheme, are either ignorant or ethically DISHONEST when they deny it. Which includes the VAST MAJORITY of Democrats and their duplicitous members of government.

SSI was that. “Insurance” in case you lived too long and ran out of money. Never was on solid ground, but when it morphed into part of one’s “retirement planning” is when it became a ponzi scheme.

It can be fixed, but ir must be modified in age and amount until it once again balances between income and payout. This may require it to return to a form of insurance in case you live too long.

@JOHN1776 Social security was working until the Supreme Court voted to make it entirely subject to their disposal. The reason it did and would still be working and inflation would have taken care of it was because of the people still paying into it. Everyone acts as if one day their will be no one paying in..but if we keep it, that won’t be true. To young people, they think that they will have better alternative ways, but if left to their own devises, they may have nothing in their old age. Unforseen events can happen. There has been a changeover in our governmment. If you don’t believe me.. read Obama’s books “Dreams of My Father ” and “The Audacity of Hope” Obama is a Muslim…born and raised by to extremist radical political Muslims. He attended 2 schools in Indonesia, a madrassah, and a Catholic school. He was groomed for his positon. It would be well worth your while to check out the Muslim Brotherhood and their connections to the Whitehouse and the Arab Spring. The Islamic takeover is here. It happened in 2008..just 7 years after 9/11. There were approx 360 jobs open to them just after Obama’s election. Last count there was 2000 mosques built here..Obama imported more on our tax dime. We need a true leader, though I am not quite sure who that would be at this point. Remember that 338.3 billion is being spent on illegals. We need someone who will put that back in the till. It will eliminate our illegal problem. Watch Oskar Freysingers speech in Berlin. http://w

I think Michele would be great, so would Herman and Newt… The two front runners if they remain so would be lack luster and could lose to Obama but any of the Republicans would be preferred to what we have now… Just in case, we really need to focus on the Senate and House…

I can not see Mr Huntsman as President and I would have to really hold my nose to vote for him much like i did last time for John McCain… I might not have voted last time had it not been for Sarah…

I wonder how much of the military has worn off of Perry? I don’t have to have Ex military experience. I just need to see common sense, common decency, leadership and an appreciation for what the military does.

You remind me of a retarded kid who was stumping for al gore back in the late 90′s. The kid knocked on my door to try and get support for his liberal candidate and I laughed and told the kid I was a Libertarian and to just move on. The kid said well the names are similar so I should support a liberal. Pfffft – ******. A Libertarian is further away from being a liberal than a conservative is, and your comment is about as ridiculous as saying our founding fathers were communists. No, wrong, our founding fathers had much more in common with today’s Libertarians than they ever will with any Conservative or Liberal.

Let’s be clear: “Threats against Social Security” don’t scare “seniors”, they scare IDIOTS. For over 50 years, progressives have claimed that Republicans wanted to take away seniors’ Social Security. Not only is this an easily provable lie, but those who fall for it today were 12 years old when the tactic started being used. Those who have grown up and grown old and STILL believe the lies are simply IDIOTS.
