Romney Reaffirms DREAM Act Promise, Tells Illegals to ‘Get in Line’ With Those Applying for Citizenship Legally

GOP front-runner Mitt Romney defended his stance on immigration during Monday night’s GOP debate, asserting that while he is strongly in favor of legal immigration others who are here illegally must return home, apply for citizenship through the proper channels and “wait in line” like others who are currently going through the long, legal immigration process.
The former Massachusetts governor adamantly reaffirmed his vow that, if elected, he would not sign the controversial DREAM Act.
The topic came up when Fox News contributor and debate moderator Juan Williams asked Romney if his immigration stance could hurt him with Latino voters.
Watch Romney break down his views on legal vs. illegal immigration to the audibly approving crowd. Huffington Post brings us the video:

Face it: Romney hasn’t evolved at all; he only says whatever he feels is needed to get the position he wants. When it was governor of MA, it was pro-choice, big government, anti-gun. Now it’s pro-life, anti-global warming, pro-gun… oh, and still big government. Go figure.
If you want a big-government progressive candidate, go for Romney. If you want a fiscally conservative candidate, look elsewhere.

If Romney is smart then he won’t release his tax returns…..yet.
If he is the candidate, then he should wait until the general election for Obama to bring it up.
Once Obama says that Romney should release his tax records, Mitt should say, “o.k. I will…..if you release your college transcripts, college records, financial records, medical records, etc.”
That would Shut Obama up, because Obama has hidden a lot more than his tax records.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 1:42amI think his answer complicated the issue. I agree that for someone in this country, citizen or not, to declare solidarity with an entity that has waged war against us, is a treasonous act and should be dealt with accordingly. But, at the same time, it leaves way to much room for someone elected President in the future to abuse the power. I see his opinion, but the possible outcome scares the crap out of me. I don’t however fear that he caused nor will exacerbate the problem. Hopefully during his tenure he will examine the issue more thoroughly and choose to eliminate the power. I also haven’t read the bill so I am at a loss as to any concrete implications. My knee jerk reaction though is to oppose the idea.

Arresting an American and holding them indefinitely without charges, without a lawyer and without a trial is something straight out of Nazi Germany. This is completely unconstitutional and if we actually had a supreme court with any balls they would declare it so. There is no need and no excuse for a law like the NDAA. Anyone who supports this should be declared a terrorist, locked up and held indefinitely. Washington, Jefferson, & Madison are rolling over in their graves.

Short term memory issues are pervasive around here. In a previous debate Newt said that someone who got here illegally but managed a long illegal career of taking care of themselves (I am paraphrasing as he used words like worked and succeeded in obtaining an education) should get privilege in determining their immigration status with a push towards legal. Romney says the opposite. If you came illegally and managed to stay here long enough to grow roots and have a family, etc. Then good for them, they had a nice run without detection, but now they must go home and try it the legal way and get in line. Huge difference. One view panders to the “feelings” of part legal families, the other stands by the rule of law. One is opportunistic in securing a vote, the other is a principled stand with a clear line drawn.

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 3:31amThis reply is late but I feel needed.
We can’t afford to perform a massive deportation, we do not possess the man power requisite for such a task. This is why the concept of checking immigration status when an illegal alien is caught breaking the law is such an appealing strategy. If they break the rules, and we catch them they go home. If they are clever enough to keep from being caught then they get to stay (not legally of course, just by virtue of the fact that we are clueless to their existence.)
The next step is we still shut down the border with an actual defensible fence, and we crackdown on employers moronic enough to hire illegals. The opportunities and the enticements for illegal immigration will disappear and for the most part the problem will take care of itself. For the illegals living on the kindness of their family members who work when they can’t, the money will be spent on their care here in the United States instead of being sent via Western Union to Mexico. Its win win folks.
