Romney Reaffirms Support of Automatic Increases in Minimum Wage

EAGAN, Minn. (The Blaze/AP) — Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney renewed his support Wednesday for automatic increases in the federal minimum wage to keep pace with inflation, a position sharply at odds with traditional GOP business allies, conservatives and the party’s senior lawmakers.

“I haven’t changed my thoughts on that,” the former Massachusetts governor told reporters aboard his chartered campaign plane, referring to a stand he has held for a decade.

He did not say if he would ask Congress to approve the change if he wins the White House this fall.

Congress first enacted federal minimum wage legislation in 1938 and has raised it sporadically in the years since. The last increase, approved in 2007, took effect in three installments and reached $7.25 an hour for covered workers effective July 24, 2009.

It has never been allowed to rise automatically, as Romney envisions.

Organized labor generally supports increases in the minimum wage, and Romney’s position could give him cross-over appeal among blue-collar Democrats in a general election campaign.

Republicans have generally opposed attempts to raise it, although in 1996, the GOP-controlled Congress passed an election-year increase that included a package of tax cuts for business and a subminimum wage to apply to new, younger employees.

At the time lawmakers were considering the 2007 legislation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce registered its disapproval.

“Any minimum wage increase will significantly affect the bottom line of the nation’s small business owners,” said Bruce Josten, the executive vice president for government affairs at the organization, which says it represents more than 3 million businesses and organizations across the country.

The National Federation of Independent Business says on its website that it “opposes any increase in the current federal minimum wage. Mandatory wage increases not only hurt small businesses, but their employees as well … It has not been proven to reduce poverty or narrow the income gap and puts a stranglehold on America’s top job creators: small businesses.”

Aides to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Romney’s statement.

As a candidate for governor of Massachusetts in 2002, Romney said he supported minimum wage increases in line with inflation.

Five years ago, he said he liked the “idea of getting the political debate out and I like the idea of not having the huge jumps as we do now.”

One of Romney’s rivals in the presidential race, Newt Gingrich, said at a news conference last week that he would be cautious about raising the minimum wage for fear it would contribute to unemployment. He was speaker of the House at the time of the 1996 increase, which was passed under Democratic pressure.

      “Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney renewed his support Wednesday for automatic increases in the federal minimum wage to keep pace with inflation, a position sharply at odds with traditional GOP business allies, conservatives and the party’s senior lawmakers.”

      Mitt Romney doesn’t understand that inflation is caused by artificial credit expansion (which is what caused the housing bubble), and that the Minimum Wage creates a barrier to entry into the marketplace for unskilled labor.

      THANKS FOR VOTING FOR ROMNEY FLORIDA!

      I wake up every day, hoping that there will be a widespread awakening among the voting population of this country, and every single day I wake up to things like this. How much stupidity has to be flung in your faces before you people face the music? You want to vote for this guy? You might as well be down in some park pitching a tent, forgoing all hygiene, and screaming zany epithets about the 99% and the 1%.

      I’m getting so fed up. I’m living in the United Fascist States of America in the last days of the Constitution and the people that are supposed to be like minded with me are voting for – Romney? You people are going to get exactly what you deserve.

      I do NOT like the government telling me what to pay my employees. I have always contended that the only reason the government wants regulated higher minimum wages is simply to collect more Income Taxes! The progressives will argue it’s to help people live better. Sorry, but that’s NOT why I hire people. I hire people to do a job for me. If they do it well, they get paid very well. If they do lousy, they get replaced.

      The rich do not need help,the poor have plenty of welfare. The middle class pays most of the tax that supports the poor.They also provide footholds for the poor to move up through providing employment and business opportunities. A strong middle class is the vehicle for helping the poor. Liberal polocies have basicly destroyed the poor and made them weak and greedy. Having said that I think that politically both Newt and Mitt are middle of the road liberals. Possibly Santorum too. Newt has a trail of wrecked lives in his wake. Romney,Paul and Santorum have similar family values. Where does that leave us? Ron Paul is a true libertarian that does not flip flop,but that could hurt him if he refuses to change his stance on radical Islam. At what wage will not having a college education stop the increases? There has to be a cut-off, otherwise what is the point in getting a college education when someone who received a high school education makes the same as a person with an Associates or Bachelors. Paying 7.25 is already nearing that threshold between HS and an AS. As Associate degree holder I made 8.75 per hour. When I received my bachelors, I made 13.00. Now at a Master’s I make around 23.00+ in the corporate world, and paid $41 per semester hour as an adjunct instructor. However, before you have a conniption fit on the rate. Times that value by 45 semester hours and that is what I make in almost 4 months. In other words, it is $123 per week. Then add the time I do school work outside of class, I might make $6.00 per hour.

    If people want to make more money, then get a college education or go to a trade school. This is what I did. This minimum wage crap has to stop period. I don‘t care if you aren’t smart enough to go to college or you don’t have the money. Where there is a will, there is a way. I have a student who is on food stamps, with a learning disability in my Computer Literacy class and he wants to do well. I am going to do everything in my power to help him pass my class. He is planning to get a tutor to help him. If he can take college classes, then why can’t others?

Apparently, you Liberals don’t know about or ignore the trickle down theory. Government raises taxes on businesses, businesses raise rates on consumers. Government raises the minimum wage on businesses, businesses raise rates on consumers. Government changes regulations that businesses have to comply, businesses will raise rates on consumers. The reason prices are rising is precisely because wages go up. It’s a collectivist chase your tail argument. If the government had their hands OUT of your pocket, with the resulting inefficiencies, your dollar would GO FURTHER than it does. Circular money arguments lead nowhere but to a richer more spendy government and poorer less spendy serfs.

      The Democrats and Republicans are the 2nd and Third party, respectively. Vote your conscience and you will be ok. Know your constitution, and vote accordingly. Hint: It’s RON PAUL .

      NC..Posted on February 1, 2012 at 7:11pm…Funny, Romney castizes Newt for “pandering” to the state he is currently running in or addressing, yet, does the same thing in Minnesota. I have most of my family from that state. Lot’s of angst within the family between the liberal side and the conservatie side. But, the point here is, Romney is supposedly a “real” christian. He has a very distorted idea the two parts of the eight commandment. As I understand the eighth commandment, an outright lie is obviously wrong. However, white lies, half truths etc. are still lies. Additionally, purposefully distorting the truth to take someone down is equally a lie. Also is against the fifth, ninth and tenth commandment. Romney it seems will say anything to get that office. Romney Care vs. Obamma care. Any difference? Obamma will have a field day with that. Rich elite? Obamma is going to have fun with that too. Romney GAVE Obamma a great gift today with the “I’m not worried about the poor, they have a safetey net” comment. In the end establishment moderate left leaning republican vs. the democratic machine. Obamma….Hope and Change….Romney….Change and Hope. I’m not a betting man, but, I see Obamma giddy in the whitehouse today.

      No doubt, a bunch of “Blue Hairs” voted for Romney.
      “He looks so nice and clean…I‘m votin’ for him.
      ~~~~
      Boy….are WE in for a hell of a ride!
      Romney dug his boot spur into Newt – and was deliberately mean-spirited about it.
      ALL he needed to do was RUN ON HIS OWN POSITIONS AND AGAINST OBAMA.
      So, TURN AROUND ON ROMNEY WAS KIND OF QUICK, HUH?
      What you Sow today, sometimes you REAP it SOONER THAN EXPECTED.
    Mitt what are thinking???, if you are going to do anything about the minimum wage get rid of it so the free market can truly work. That said i don’t like the sporadic jumps in minimum wage either, but raising it in a time where business are not hiring just seems like bad business. In all reality this probably wont affect too many people/ businesses since several states minimum wage is greater than the federal wage.
      What right does the Federal Government have, in the Constitution, to dictate the terms of private employment contracts? For that matter, what right have they to tax our income? It was ruled unconstitutional in 1895 for good reason. And there is no rule or law, written anywhere, telling us we have a duty to pay it. This has been a shadow government communist plan for ever. Minimum wage and income taxes are COMMUNIST in nature, COMMUNIST in implementation, and COMMUNIST in enforcement. We are a free people. WE DECIDE – not them.
    Please Mitt don’t say that! The job creators should pay the lowest wage possible. So that the vastly rich can pay less taxes and make enormous profits and open up Swiss bank accounts.A true Patriot should already know that.
      According to George Soro’s there is no difference. Romney just tries too hard to get along with everyone. No reason to get mad!!!!! Rick Santorum is the only true conservative, Paul is a constitutionalist but I don’t think he really wants to win, just a final shot at getting his message about the Fed out. And I wish the other candidates would speak more about this.
      We know Romney IS MR. MONEY BAGS….and more power to him – BUT
      I have to wonder, with ALL of those Costly Negative Ads against Newt, which
      he hid behind saying they were put together by his PAC…I would not be
      surprised IF he didn’t get a few “secret donors” to donate to his campaign- to
      kill 2 Birds with 1 Stone.
      #1- the Ads would knock Newt out – and
      #2 – it boost Romney up in the polls for a WIN- and
      #3 – Romney is WHO they REALLY want to go against Obama, NOT NEWT
      #4- Romney becomes the likely Nominee and Obama WINS.
      This is just MY opinion – but I don’t put ANYTHING against Romney OR Obama.
