The Huffington Post is playing it with the headline, “He Ad-Mitts It.”  During a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Friday, Mitt Romney tackled the topic of climate change using language that won’t win him many fans in some skeptical corners of the conservative movement:

“I believe the world is getting warmer, and I believe that humans have contributed to that,” he told a crowd of about 200 at a town hall meeting in Manchester, New Hampshire.

“It’s important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases that may be significant contributors.”

National Journal points out that this isn’t a first time admission, however, though they call the comments “notable”:

It’s far from the first time Romney has said he thinks man is contributing to climate change. In his 2010 book No Apology: The Case for American Greatness, the former Massachusetts governor wrote he thought man was contributing to global warming, saying the melting polar ice caps are “hard to ignore.”

Even as conservative disbelief in climate change science hardens, it‘s notable Romney isn’t backing down from an unpopular decision.

In the book, he also questioned how much of the warming is man-made while outlining several alternate theories about the causes of the rising temperatures, such as cyclical temperature cycles. He also emphasized his opposition to “unilateral U.S. cap-and-trade mandates.”

This clip from WMUR-TV doesn’t include the climate change discussion.  You can hear his comments on spending and health care.  And a quip about Obama that may indicate that Dan Rather is writing Romney’s jokes:

Update: Commenters over at feisty Weasel Zippers are not too impressed with Romney climate claims. And now New York Magazine is not too impressed with WZ comments! Follow the furor by clicking here.

What is your source for that statistic? Just asking to establish bona vides. And if it is that high, so what? Hundreds of years ago everyone knew the world was carried on the back of a turtle. Then it was “proven” to be the center of the universe. Then Kepler came along and “proved” that the Sun was actually the center of the universe. My point is that science and scientist are often more wrong than they are right, and if you ask an honest one they will agree. These same climatologists you are so enamored of also admit that if we did everything we possibly can, spending every cent we have, we can lower the temperature 1/2 of 1 degree over a hundred year period. Sure sounds like a good argument to me. Now go to your great ecological nirvana of communist China, and tell me how thats working out for them. These people want only one thing, and that is to determine how other people live. If they were SO desperate about the “population bomb”, and who’ll deny that it all goes back to too many people on the Earth, if they are SO sure that we are the cause then why don’t they do the truly heroic thing and remove themselves from the planet. Thats right, go off themselves. And their kids, parents, neighbors, but to show TRUE devotion to the cause they should go first, right? Just to buy the rest of us a little time? So we can come to our sense too, and see that by golly they ARE right humanity is just a blight and needs to be removed total

The people who believed in the “Turtle-back Theory” were religious idiots–the people who proved them wrong, like Kepler, were SCIENTISTS (obviously not professional scientists like today, by scientists I mean people who based their beliefs on facts they tried to objectively prove, rather than blindly believing what the Pope or a book said). You are watching a Kepler moment here, and you are on the wrong side–in a hundred years, history will look back on this as either the moment humanity realized the threat to itself and corrected it, or as the tragic moment in which we chose to do nothing drastically reducing arable land and natural resources.

As far as statistical citation goes; http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/01/090119210532.htm

I can’t quite find the original journal article published by the University of Illinois, but a variety of news sources reported on it. To be perfectly honest with you, I’m not always trustworthy of “polls” in general, but the point is to emphasize that climatologists (those who are most involved with the study of global climate change) generally agree on the issue that humans are at least contributing to a mean temperature warming effect.

As to the “science being more wrong than right,” your examples are all of things non-scientists believed (and quite frequently in European history things the Catholic Church declared true, like the Earth being the center of the universe) that scientists and those adhering to the scientific method of inquiry found to be untrue. Your examples are essentially showing the supremacy of science as a way of gaining knowledge, which I agree with. That‘s why I would agree with Romney’s statement that humans contribute to climate change – because those who study the climate believe the same.

And Kepler didn’t “prove” the Sun was at the center of the universe–he proved it was at the center of the KNOWN universe, our solar system, and that the Earth thus orbited around it, and not the other way around. Which is still a scientifically MORE accurate hypothesis than the claims of the Catholic Church up until that point. Newton and others would later improve on the physical (as opposed to mystical) model of the cosmos, my point is that the scientists are the one’s who are more often right, or more close to right, than wrong, not the other way around. That’s kind of the whole point.

He lacked the technological capacity to know that anything existed beyond our solar system, so he hardly could have been making any claims about such things.

Mocking my statements about how science has changed its position over and over again does not advance YOUR argument either. DO scientist change what they call established fact when new facts come in? yes they do, Can scientist, at this time, predict what the climate is going to do with exactitude? No they can’t. Can scientist model a system as complex as the Earth with varifiable positive results? No they can’t. Has the Earth gone through climate changes before Man achieved sapiency? Obviously it has, What caused those changes if not man? The earth itself, the sun, asteroid impacts? If we all drive electric cars, what generates that electricity? Coal? Nuclear? If we all drive electric cars would we need MORE or LESS electric generators? Are cow farts contributing to Global warming as has been suggested? If we give up eating cows will WE generate more farts because of our ingestion of more vegetable matter, and will that off set or equal the cowfarts? Here’s the biggie genius, if burning hydrogen 2((H2) and oxygen(O2)) results in H2O +O2 which if you’ve forgotten your high school science is water and air, why is no one building a hydrogen powered car. I agree. The climate has always been changing since the earth began. The global warming alarmists (now “climate change” alarmists can’t tell us what a “normal” temperature or climate for the earth atcually is). Only 10,000 years ago there was a mile high glacier which stretched in all directions from the north pole and covered 99% of Canada, much of the northern USA, most of northern Europe and Russia. This Ice Age glacier reached as far south as present day New York City, Chicago, London, and Moscow. Fortunately for the human race the last Ice Age ended, suddenly, about 10,000 years ago thanks to a sudden warming of the earth. It’s funny to see people like “Better Red” here mock the Middle Ages when today, in 2011, Al Gore who proclaims himself the self appointed “Pope” of global warming allows no one to disgree with his select global warming theories. Any fact based disagreement with his “orthodox” global warming scientists makes his supreme climate change majesty Al Gore very angry. Al Gore is modern day version of the Inquisition who attacks anyone who dares question his climate theories “heretics”. He is also a fool.

I know what the scientific method is. The fact that science revises itself in light of empirical findings is evidence of its rationality, and is WHY it has the highest preponderance of leading to truth–simply because some people blindly believe, and have adhered to a blind belief in the face of all evidence, is not a laudable fact, and it certainly isn’t more likely to be veracious than a reasoned (i.e. scientific) approach to understanding the world. You can’t possibly be suggesting that the longer people have believed something, the truer it is–that’s a patent fallacy. It is not it’s duration that makes something true or not, it is the strength of the causal links between claim and evidence.

“Evolution: Yes boys, evolution is a theory.”
Did you figure that one out all by yourself? The existence of God is a theory. Unlike that theory, however, there are empirical reasons to believe the theory of evolution is true–namely that it explains or empirical observations, which no other theory does (i.e. no theory provides a possible explanation of all observed phenomena without violating other observed natural laws and/or phenomena).

“A new species has never been bred from an existing species.”
      That’s not how evolution works.

But they are still dogs, and can still interbreed. Chimps and humans are genetically compatible to around 1% but cannot interbred”
That sounds like a statement based in zero scientific fact. There is less genetic variability between breeds of dog than between them and humans and chimps, or chimps and humans. It matters WHERE in the genetic code the variation is. Most of the genetic code is shared between all life on Earth (more evidence FOR evolution), as most organisms share major physiological similarities (cells with nuclei, mitochondria, double helix DNA, etc.). Also, Mr. Brilliant, it’s “but cannot INTERBREED” not interbred–wrong tense genius.

There actually aren’t pesky questions about that–gravity makes the creation of the universe imminent given the physical laws that govern it; read Hawking’s work if you want details.

Huh? What the hell are you talking about?

      “varifiable ”
      Verifiable

“If we all drive electric cars, what generates that electricity? Coal? Nuclear?”
Nuclear power production does not generate greenhouse gases. That’s also a reason why we need to use carbon neutral technologies, and develop carbon negative (i.e. carbon absorbing/re-capture technology).

“Are cow farts contributing to Global warming as has been suggested?”
Methane IS a greenhouse gas several times more effective at reflecting thermal waves of electromagnetic radiation than CO2. The beef industry is global and generates a LOT of cows, so technically there is measurable, possibly substantial impact.

“Here’s the biggie genius, if burning hydrogen 2((H2) and oxygen(O2)) results in H2O +O2 which if you’ve forgotten your high school science is water and air, why is no one building a hydrogen powered car. ”

      THAT’S the biggie?
      1) Air is actually mostly nitrogen with a 21% share of oxygen
      2) The answer to your question is because it isn’t as profitable as milking petroleum, and those patents are bought up by the oil industry to prevent such competition when oil prices DO make it profitable. There are hydrogen powered buses in Germany–they do already exist.

Finally, I’d like to take a moment to address this stupid “but it’s varied without us argument, therefore we can’t make it vary” argument.

Yes, natural process can introduce the same gases that cause global warming. There is CO2 frozen in polar regions, methane frozen under the sea, water vapor is an excellent greenhouse gas and the share of the atmosphere that contains it varies in proportion to the average temperature, finally combustion occurs naturally (lightning hits forest).

That doesn‘t mean humans giving off the same gases don’t have the same effects, in fact, it’s evidence that the the theory of how the atmospheric composition effects the absorption and release of thermal energy. The fact that there are natural processes which effect climate of the Earth is just ALLL THE MORE REASON, that we need to not only control our own effects, but master the ability to offset the natural effects with carbon sequestering technologies. It doesn’t all have to be man-made to be a problem that we can fix—we’ve mastered nature before and we shall yet again.

Global warming is not a myth. The earth is getting warmer. This is pretty uncontroversial. Anthropogenic Global Warming (i.e. man-caused global warming) is a bit more controversial.

It doesn’t really require “extraordinary proof” to show the earth is warming… there’s various averages of the different measurements from around the world, or if you‘re like Watts and think they’re inaccurate, you can look at satellite temp estimates (which match surface station estimates fairly closely): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Satellite_Temperatures.png

You’re right about Kyoto being bad, though. It’s one of the worst treaties ever made – would have no effect on CO2 output, but would involve writing a check to Eastern European countries (that will meet their targets by simple virtue of having the USSR’s industry vanish).

Man has no control whatever over our climate and BOSS keeps showing these poor people that have no power but they think they usurp His anyway. I’m going to pick your comment apart, at least a little bit. “Infestation of carbon-based creatures could or would affect an entire planet from “magma core” to space “atmosphere” is a joke. Hmmm, let me begin with this, Earth’s core is not magma it is Nickel and Iron, followed by an outer core of magma, then Asthenosphere, Lithosphere and finally crust. Secondly, there is no atmosphere in space. Get your Science straight;-) If you’re going to claim that, in your view something is a joke you should, at least have some knowledge of basic Science. Geeeezz! The argument about climate change is no argument at all among the Scientific community. The argument is how much humans contribute to the problem and if so, what can we do, if anything to change it. Most Geologists including my self believe, at least in part, that our climate issues are a result of earth‘s rotation on it’s axis, which is not perfect, combined with earth’s elliptical rotation around the sun called the “Malachovitch Cycle”(excuse me if I mangled that spelling). The ability of plants and trees and Phytoplankton in our oceans to photosynthesize Carbon Dioxide is greatly hampered by our huge use fossil fuels. The fact is, there are a myriad of factors that affect climate change and CO2 emissions is a big piece of that puzzle. There are not enough characters available on this thread to really have this discussion, but I did find your comment really interesting because it was that inaccurate

I totally feel you on taking it all back, and you ask are you ready….i would say yes……but not blindly….what would be the outcome, after it is “taken back”??? Let’s put your statement into focus here, the country is broke and shattered after you vote Obama back into office just to bring on the situation. This taking back process starts (kinda like in Egypt). Well now you have overthrown a government and something needs to be put back in it’s place. There is anarchy and disobedience all around…..I feel like it would be almost impossible to put the original constitution back in place, because I think many sides would join your cause to “take it back”. These groups would include racist militia types, anarchists. and others……you get my point……America did not gain independence by JUST deciding to pick up their arms and going to war with the Brits.

There was much planning involved, and they had a pretty good foundation to put in place….

So no….not ready for your version of taking it back….although I can’t say I have never thought about it…..lol

The earth is 75% covered by water. 25% land, out of that 25% how much is inhabited? 15-17%? So Romney and the rest of the global warming scammers are trying to assert that 15-17% overpowers the other 85-83%. That an elephant is weaker than a mouse? GIVE ME A BREAK! Its common sense, we do not control mother nature, it controls us!!! Always has, always will. The earth will always do what it wants to do and there isnt a damn thing man can do about it. The earth goes through cycles like a sine wave, positive-negative-positive-negative. The global warming scam was created by greedy individuals, they created a sting and cashed in. They should all be in jail.

George H Bush and the rest of the globalist are pushing for Romney, Huntsman, and others. Last week Huntsman had lunch with George H Bush. They are scared because we are waking up. Hey Romney. God put us on this earth and if we serve HIM, He and He alone, will take care of us. I am not worried one bit. However, any greenie that gets elected in this country deserves the idiots who elected him. As humans, we should be smarter about what we do, but not condemned for what we do not do. EDUCATION and not forced. It should be our choice to do some things that God has blessed us with. Geez, these people really make me ill and all I can say is that they are being driven by the devil. The devil starts out subtly (like the garden of eden) and makes you believe a lie. Then he propagates that lie until it becomes absurd and/or impossible. The devil is a deceiver and a liar. Do your homework and you will find that most environment scientists DO NOT BELIEVE this global warming. IT IS ALL ABOUT HOW MUCH MONEY POLITICIANS CAN PUT IN THEIR POCKET (YOUR MONEY). Ask Romney where in the Bible it says we should not breathe or eat meat or not prosper. When will these politicians get off their superior soapbox and start listening to the MAJORITY of the American people and NOT the MINORITY? When?

Do not contribute to the republicans, only to individual candidates. Strangle off their cash and eventually they will die on the vine. Michele Bachmann is it for Tea Partiers. We can live with Herman Cain. Would love Allen West, And Sarah of course. Mike Pence from IN was my first choice. Pawlenty, Daniels, Huntsman, and the rest are squishes. Be it Mr. West or someone else that has not yet come to national attention is unimportant, what is important is that people like Romney and Gingrich are not allowed to continue to form public opinion regarding conservative issues. Both within days of announcing their candidacies have provided ridiculous comments that the Liberals both in the press and Democratic Party will use to keep conservative candidates off message during upcoming campaigns… Bye Mitt, Bye Newt, do conservatives a favor and denounce your own comments and remove yourselves from the race before your ego’s and liberal tendencies do us any more damage.

      @THE THIRD ARCHON, @BETTERREDTHAN DEAD

Do I really have to explain the scientific method to you guys? You know, you live in a world that has the best scientific theories possible. Suddenly, you have an idea! You ask a question (why is x, x?)You collect data on x. you study x. You suggest a hypothesis. You see if your data conforms to your theory. You adjust your theory, you refine your theory, you publish your theory. Other scientist look at your data and theory, and try to reproduce it. If they can your theory is accepted. Until the next guy has a NEW theory. By definition, current science is based on past failed theories. THEY WERE WRONG! get it?
Now lets look at some THEORIES being promulgated as fact.
Evolution: Yes boys, evolution is a theory. It has never been proven or demonstrated. Never has a bigger scam been pushed by scientist since the flat earth, or that if you travelled more than 25 MPH you would explode ( an actual theory at one time). Take for example dogs. Dogs have the widest range of physical characteristics than any other common animal. They have been bred for centuries. You have teacup Yorkies, and Irish Wolfhounds. But they are still dogs, and can still interbreed. Chimps and humans are genetically compatible to around 1% but cannot interbred. A new species has never been bred from an existing species.
the Big Bang: mmm besides of that little pesky question of what came before the big bang, where is all the matter (dark mat

You must be a typical progressive. Spout nonsense and call it fact.

There is no atmosphere in space. There are gas molecules, but they are so few and far between that they do not produce a measurable pressure. Compared with Earth, the atmosphere of space is virtually empty. The vacuum (emptiness) of space is more complete than any vacuum that can be produced in a laboratory on Earth.

I will say that you think global warming is an political issue rather than one of science. And you’re statement that, “The so called UN scientists and their supporters have publically admitted fully the data they have used is flawed and corrupted…” is false. But again, you’re not lying, you simply don‘t realize that’s not true.

I won’t challenge you to support your statement. But I do find it pathetic that someone who claims to be religious gets their “truth” from Rush Limbaugh. What’s more bothersome to me is that people like you have no interest in science. I pray that, for a nation, we raise children more analytical and less dogmatic.

I am so very disappointed in this statement. I was a fan. I thought he could find fiscal saneness. But now I see that he believes in a fiction so obviously false that he cannot serve. I had such high hopes for him!

Romney would need to drag a muslim on stage at the Republican primary debate, and then shoot him in the face to win the nomination.

Human kind is part of the biosphere (something you liberals can get behind) and just like the whales and bears and everything else, we get the by products of that existence as well. Don’t like the way we have used our resources or our minds? invent a better way to advance humanity.

And this is why I don’t believe a thing that this man is saying. No one should. Romney is a RINO. He may have the financial where-with-all with his background in Capital investment, but anyone who buys into this hoax of Global Warming has one thing in mind, taxing us all for it and regulating more businesses to a point where they will continue to leave this country.

No Romney, No Newt on this topic…or any topic for me.

We need someone with charisma, action to support their words. Those people aren’t running. Pray they do.

Never cared for Romney, and now my dislikes about him have been cemented. I didn’t have a problem with the Romney- care thing because that was what a majority of Mass. residents seemed to want and that is the only way that a state should have socialized healthcare, not because the president decides that everyone in the nation should bow to the government for healthcare. Romney care was a stupid idea and is one of the main factors in Mass. being so close to insolvency, why would any sane Rep. put this RINO as the front runner for the Rep. nomination?

This man is the poster child of what is wrong with the Republican Party!

The Old Republican Guard is so out of touch with America that they REALLY think that they can flood the field with a bunch of RINOs so that one of them sticks! They are playing ‘politics as usual’ from 2 years ago, not realizing that Conservative America wants this GARBAGE GONE, once and for all!

This is precisely why all of the RNC old guard needs to be flushed out. They back a Progressive RINO agenda and are in the pockets of Liberal elites.

ROMNEY is for Heavy Gun Control Laws.

Do your homework. This guy believes that Government should protect the citizens by restricting citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights. Does that sound American to you?

Dont support this RINO! He is bad for an already injured American people.
