Romney Rebuffs Santorum on Health Care: ‘It’s Not Worth Getting Angry About’

Taking an opportunity to slam Mitt Romney over Romneycare during CNN’s GOP debate, Rick Santorum painted the former House Speaker and Romney with the same brush when it comes to health care.
“This is the top-down model that both of these gentlemen say they‘re now against but they’ve been for,” Santorum started.
After Romney described his history of health reform and vowed to repeal Obamacare, Santorum fired back, noting that Romney said “government-run top down medicine is working well in Massachusetts and he supports it.”
“That’s not what I said,” Romney replied.
“Think about what that means going up against Barack Obama, who you are going to claim, ‘well, it doesn’t work and we should repeal,’” Santorum said. “He’s going to say, ‘Wait a minute, governor. You said it works well in Massachusetts.’ Folks — we can’t give this issue away in this election. It is about fundamental freedom.”
Romney responded, “Rick, I make enough mistakes in what I said not for you to add more mistakes to what I said,” he began. “I didn’t say I’m in favor of top down government-run health care.”
Romney added, “If you don’t want to buy insurance, then you have to help pay for the cost of the state picking up your bill because under federal law if someone doesn’t have insurance, then we have to care for them in the hospitals, give them free care. We said no more free riders. We are insisting on personal responsibility.”
Asked to clarify if Massachusetts residents had been required to buy health care, Romney responded, “Everyone has an requirement to either buy insurance or pay the state for the cost of providing them free care.”
“First of all, it’s not worth getting angry about,” Romney said. “Secondly, 98% of the people have insurance. And so the idea that more people are free riding the system is simply impossible.”
Santorum, at this point, looked bewildered by Romney’s comment.
“Your mandate is no different than Barack Obama’s mandate,” the former Pennsylvania senator said. “It is the same mandate. You take over 100%, just like he takes over 100%, requires the mandate. The same fines that you put in place in Massachusetts are fines that he puts in place in the federal level.”

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 2:49amAfter tonight’s debate, it’s Newt who should be getting out. Santorum won the debate. Paul made a few good one-liners. Romney owned Newt. Newt’s big claim has been that he is such an amazing debater and that he would somehow “force” Obama to debate him. Newt look dazed and weak. He balmed his poor showing in the last debate on lack of audience participation. The saying “be careful of what you wish for” applies in this case as his performance tonight was absolutely abyssmal (although better than Perry’s early debates). Newt polls the WORST of any of the 4 remaining against Obama. But Newt has a Las Vegas sugar daddy, so Newt is going to stay in and keep on taking votes from Santorum. Romney must be loving it.

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 5:53am15 minutes into the debate Romney’s nose grew 2 feet. I thought Mormons were moral people? Didn’t know that was his add? What a liar and Wolfe called him on it. Then as a typical millionaire has not a clue where his money is. Swiss bank accounts? Investing in Freddie and Fanny?… come on. At this point he could go toe to toe with Obambie. With his lies and deflections.
Santorum called him on his Government health care and Mr. Nicely promised it was different. What’s the difference?
If the Chief in Liar is to be our nominee, then we are better off making sure the Congress and House is Republican and let Obama have the office.

If you think Romneycare isn’t going to be on full display in the general if Romney is the nominee, you need to pull your head out of the sand. And pointing this fact out IS necessary, it’s NOT an option. I personally don’t want to have to “settle” for the establishment guy. I don’t want another 2008, thanks.

It‘s not like there’s a vast amount of dirty laundry being put out by the MSM to talk about, and he says Romney won’t do his show. You have Romney care, which he came out against and the flip flop on abortion. We all know he’s not conservative enough for us, but what else is there to say really? He’s the typical politician that will probably who will probably govern the way Gallup suggests he should. I’d light into Romney for being supportive of the NDAA, but that topic seems taboo for all media pundits, and besides everyone else is for stripping away our civil liberties as well.
That being said, I’m still ticked off about not being able to talk about the following on this site:

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 11:39pmSantorum. “Your mandate is no different than Barack Obama’s mandate”. Except that one is at the state level and the other at the federal level! Big difference if you ask me. I thought we conservatives were in support of state’s rights. Mass. is a liberal state. If that is the kind of health care reform they want then why shouldn’t they have it. As far as I know, Romney did not force it through the system the way BHO did.
By the way, I wonder how many of those complaining about BHO forcing things down our throat actually voted last time or if they chose not to vote because they didn’t like McCain. I didn‘t like him either but I know very well that if he had been elected we wouldn’t have Obamacare right now and if more conservatives had voted things could be very different right now. Maybe we have no one to blame but ourselves.
I also know a lot of republicans/conservatives who are on medicaid, medicare, section 8 housing, and/or food stamps. I fear that too many of us say that we want smaller gvmt but don’t want to give up our own slice of the pie. Progressive liberals are still a minority in this country so the fact that we even have this battle to fight is evidence that too many conservatives have become too complacent or have bought into the system themselves.
I am more afraid of the hearts of the people than I am of the candidates!

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 1:20amAmen, on the Santorum statement.
My fear would be if John McCain had won, we would still be in Iraq, Osama Bin Laden would still be alive, and we would be gearing up for a war with Iran. So we bankrupt ourselves through social welfare or we bankrupt ourselves through war. Either way we wind up bankrupt.
With McCain we wouldn’t have a republican house and we wouldn’t be geared to take over the Senate this year.
Social reforms can be changed with administrations. Wars are much more difficult to get ourselves out of.

There is no arguing the fact that repealing Obamacare is a central plank in the GOP’s election 2012 platform. While some Republican candidates like Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry ran heavily on the promise of a swift and total repeal of the unpopular Obama-crafted healthcare law, which many fear will lead to an unsustainable socialized healthcare system, the entire GOP field has railed against Obamacare since the start of the 2012 election cycle.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 10:21pmAs painful as it is to listen to Santorum speak, I do believe he’s correct that Mass. does have a mandate, and he’s also correct that since the fine is much smaller than purchasing health insurance, most people will pay the fine and then, once again, become a financial strain to the state.
Then again, these dudes (maybe minus Paul) are all pretty much government dudes. Can’t really change things until you change the minds of a very large number of Americans. If they don’t want to change, then things are not going to change. It’s that simple.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 10:42pmIf they pay a fine at least they are paying SOMETHING! Where I live there are so many people that don’t pay their hospital bills that they hospitals are close to shutting down. I just wonder how the gov. goes about collecting the fines. The city gov. here won’t even collect parking tickets!

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 12:39amYeah Florida was great, lots of good memories there. Texas is pretty cool though, although I do miss the fishing. Very peaceful being out 20 miles away from civilization with no one to bug you.

Truth statement. Rick needs to catch fire, he has been a more consistent conservative than Newt and Mitt.
