Romney Refuses to Sign Prominent Pro-Life Group’s Pledge

2012 hopeful Mitt Romney is taking heat today after news got out that he refused to sign a prominent pro-life group’s presidential pledge.
Romney, who has come under fire for his stance on abortion before, did not sign the Susan B. Anthony List’s 2012 Pro-life Presidential Leadership Pledge. The pledge, comprised of four statements, promises to appoint only “relevant” pro-life cabinet members as well push to end all taxpayer funded abortions.
“Governor Romney pledged in the last campaign that he would be a pro-life president and of course he pledges it today,” the Romney campaign said in a statement. “However, this well-intentioned effort has some potentially unforeseen consequences and he does not feel he could in good conscience sign it. Gov. Romney has been a strong supporter of the SBA List in the past and he looks forward to continue working with them to promote a culture of life.”
For example, a Romney spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that signing the pledge could mean promising to “strip taxpayer funding from thousands of health-care facilities, including (Veterans Administration) hospitals around the country.”
Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum did sign the pledge. Herman Cain and Gary Johnson joined Romney in not signing. It’s unclear if Jon Huntsman was asked to sign. Below is a copy of the pledge signed by Bachmann:
“We applaud those candidates who did sign the pledge for vowing to support and advance the protection of life at all stages,” Marilyn Musgrave, a former Republican congresswoman from Colorado and the policy director for the SBA List, told the WSJ.
“Mitt Romney will appoint judges who will faithfully interpret the Constitution and not legislate from the bench,” a Romney spokesperson tried to make clear to the WSJ. “The bottom line is that Gov. Romney is firmly pro-life.”
But “firmly pro-life” could be debatable. Weasel Zippers drudged up a video from the former governor’s 2002 gubernatorial campaign that shows him fervently defending a “woman’s right to choose,“ vowing to ”protect” it and even supporting the ability of girls under 18 to get abortions approved by judges:
He seems to have backed off of that strong stance since, but the truth is he has not always been a staunch pro-lifer.

Mitt Romney is a big government Republican whose conversion to pro-life and Johnny-come-lately renouncement of sorts of Romneycare (even if it were legal in MA, it still indicates he believes big government was the solution) disqualify him from running as a true conservative candidate.

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 11:48amthe Right to Life issue is going to be maybe the trickiest this election.
Personally I am so torn on it. Torn enough that I don’t think any laws should be put in place on the matter, not until we really explore as people what it means to abort an unborn child.
I have had an abortion. It was awful. Grief and guilt crippled me for months. I’ve been sad before…I say crippled because my legs would give out beneath me at times. I was a mother, I killed, or allowed to be killed, my baby. That is just the Truth of what happened.
Was it wrong? I am still not sure about this. I was 19, now 23. I am so glad I do not have a kid. I wasn’t ready and I did not have a man around. I was scared and alone, but I was also being selfish and wanted to ‘enjoy my youth’ more.
Should we have laws banning abortion? I don’t think so. I think that abortion may be a right of motherhood. The issue is that libs refuse to describe a pregnant woman as a mother. Women are led to believe (against their intuition, or ‘hormones’) that what is in their body is just a collection of cells and that taking it out is like getting a cavity removed.
Report Post »This is what to talk about. Not trying to force anything on anyone (having the discussion in the context of politics) but simply women understanding more about their own bodies and about what it means to bring a new life into the world and to be its mother. Men cant decide this, even if they are Correct, motherhood is of women. Forcing anything is wrong/d

My Heart Goes Out To You! Women aren’t being told the whole Truth. However, the Truth is out there and easily found. Some tho, don’t have it in them to want to know the Truth. They prefer telling themselves that abortion is ok because it’s a law. God Bless You For Asking The Right Questions.
There is peace of mind and heart available for you. We are all sinners in need of a Savior — not one of us can say we haven’t made bad choices. That’s what Jesus Christ is about! Jesus is our Savior and our Redeemer. Forgiveness for our bad choices is what Jesus’ death on Calvary was all about. Lay it all at His Feet, acknowledging Jesus as your Lord and Savior and giving your life to Him, and you will be a forgiven woman. Because of Jesus, our sins / bad choices are remembered no more. We are free from them, forever. Get to know Jesus and Who He Is and what Who He Is means to each and every one of us. A good place to start reading the Bible is the Gospel of John. Take a look at John 3:16,17.
God Bless You, Selene! Go In Peace From This Moment On …….
PS: Your baby is alive and well and with Jesus! By trusting in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, somewhere – way down the road, you and your little one will be together for Eternity. : )

If someone has run before, probably that person shouldn’t even be on the ballot again. We need new, real people running our government.
Bye the way, I do not consider Sarah Palin as having run before. She was never allowed to run. She was kept on a tight leash, the “token” woman on his team, which cost them the election. Had McCain and his people given her her head, it would have been a whole different story. Perhaps it‘s just as well that they didn’t because NOW WE ARE AWARE AND AWAKE.

You are referencing roe v wade here. Do you have the courage to read up on Norma McCorvey [aka Jane Roe] and Bernard Nathanson, MD and finding out that they are BOTH Strong Pro-Life Advocates Now? In the early 70s, both of them played a HUGE part in getting roe v wade passed. While you’re on-line take a look at “Silent Scream” by Dr Nathanson. “Silent Scream” is a video of an abortion, revealing how a tiny baby is being brutally murdered.
52+Million babies have been brutally murdered since roe v wade passed in 1973.
“A woman’s individual liberty” — to do what? Murder her own baby? What About Her Baby’s “Individual Liberty?”
My Border Collie knows that a mother lays down her life for her babies — babies don’t lay down their lives for their mothers. God help the man or beast that would attempt to harm her pups!
Yet — those 52+Million human mothers have willingly made the choice to harm / murder their own babies.
I don‘t think you’ve got it in you, jrook, to do the research that will cause you to see the Truth. Because ……. it’s so much easier for you to dwell in a little delusional bubble that tells you abortion is ok, because it’s a law. Just because it’s a law — It Doesn‘t Mean It’s Morally Right! Simply stated: Abortion Is Murder!

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 2:16pmJRook, as a pro-choice conservative mormon woman, I completely agree with you. That “pledge” is a joke, and I would be frightened to vote for anyone who signed it promising taht the litmus test for such cabinet positions is that someone is pro-choice. The reality is that almost EVERYONE is pro-choice, save the very, very few that would have our law prohibit termination in every scenario. Even those who say abortion is okay to “save the life of the mother” are pro-choice, they want the law to allow a woman whose doctor advises her that her life may be in danger to choose the option of abortion or not. Some say abortion in a rape or incest situation is tolerable, those women should have a choice. It is merely a matter of where you fall on the spectrum. The radical religious right should spend more time being compassionate, nonjudgmental, and less ignorant of those who have a pro-choice position. The name-calling doesn’t accomplish what you should really be accomplishing, which is convincing individuals that abortion is, for them, not an option. The law, however, should not prohibit absolutely a woman’s right to choose. Good for Romney for not signing taht ridiculous and overreaching “pledge.”

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 7:50pmTO ALL THOSE WONDERING
Romney was fine with abortion back in 1994 when he ran against Ted Kennedy for the senate. He may have said that because he was trying to beat Ted Kennedy. His faith speaks highly against it so I wouldn’t think he would be an advocate for it.
But that was almost 20 years ago and his mind has changed over time, as all do. He came from a liberal state and an liberal ivy league school, and he has found through life that that way of life isn’t right. As governor he fought against abortion and forcing private (Catholic) hospitals to have to carry the morning after pill. He has vetoes almost every abortion like bill that came through the Massachusetts governor’s desk and has fought against it ever since.
Whether you call changing your mind over 20 years flip-flopping or learning common sense, you decide, he has pledge to run an administration that is pro-life and will not sign this pledge because of the ‘unforeseen consequences that may come… hospital funding, appointees that are qualified, etc.
YOU DECIDE BUT THIS IS NOT A BAD CHOICE FOR ROMNEY AND MAY HAVE BEEN A GREAT FIGHT AGAINST FUTURE FLIP-FLOPS, JUST LIKE HIS STANCE ON THE CLIMATE (HE NEVER SAID HE BELIEVED IN ‘MAN-MADE‘ GLOBAL WARMING’) AND HIS STANCE ON THROWING ROMNEYCARE ( CALLED BY HERITAGE FOUNDATION THE MOST MARKET BASED HEALTH CARE SYSTEM OF ITS TIME, REMEMBER THAT IT WAS THE 85% LIBERAL CONGRESS THAT DESTROYED IT.
HE IS STILL A VERY VIABLE CANDIDATE FOR ANY VOTE

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 12:40pmHe has a moral dilemma. As long as there is no law stopping abortion, and is in fact a law allowing it, as a Mormon he is in the position of allowing women their free agency. As a person who can help change the law and appoint judges who believe in life, he can change this for good.Would that we could convince everyone that life is a gift from God. True Christians know that it is wrong to destroy life, yet God has given each of us free agency to choose-good or evil. No law supercedes God’s will, we know that. Until the progressives are shown up for what they are-destructive of life- we have to keep fighting the laws that allow it. Until then we have to honor God’s law for ourselves. All His laws, not just the ones we like. Pity the women who choose wrong, the pain they cause themselves must be horrendous. Law or not, some will always choose this horrible solution to their immediate problem, not realising the long term consequences.

No offense, but if Romney was a hard-core mormon he would have signed the pledge in a heart beat. He’s said many things if you are listening closely that shows he breaks from the mormon church. I guess mormons don’t want to admit that. On the other hand, other conservatives and christians should stop holding his faith against him especially because I think its clear his Christian values come before his mormon culture. Read between the lines of what he says.
Let‘s be glad he didn’t sign the pledge and instead won‘t be told what he can or can’t do as President.

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 1:37pmWho cares if he signed it or not? This issue will make Conservatives loose this election again! One issue that has nothing to do with the enemy that is attacking you now,,the one you need to stop first! If you have a murderer and a thief in your home which one will you stop first,,hopefully the murderer? There are people murdering our Country and its Constitution,,If that goes first you can kiss repealing abortion laws good bye,,every thing is lost then! Romney is an AsS hole of a Candidate but I sure hope that If it comes down to voting for a Republican running against Obama,, that didn‘t sign that pledge or not showing up to vote because your one issue wasn’t put at the front of the line,,you people get your one track mind and head out of your aSs’s and save the Country first, then you can start with all the Social issues if anything is still left to save! One issue voters are letting their Country slip away,,keep your families and children safe for now, vote in people to save the Constitution and the Country,,then worry about what laws and protections can be established to protect other families and their children! First things first or loose it all!

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 2:52pmI AGREE WITH ROMNEY CAIN AND JOHNSON FOR NOT SIGNING THIS BECAUSE OF ‘UNFORESEEN CONSEQUENCE’
Forgot to mention that Herman Cain and Johnson won’t either because of “Unforeseen Consequences.” I am not too angry about this because better that they don’t sign it and have to break it later on, at least they are being honest.
There is a great article on http://www.americanparchment.com clarifying this.

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 3:09pmTO ALL THOSE WONDERING
HE IS STILL A VERY VIABLE CANDIDATE FOR ANY VOTER.

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 3:17pmGov. Romney has a right to association. He has chosen not to associate or bind himself to an organization that may or may not be all that it seems. I am pro-life, but I am leary of people who ask for pledges in writing for anything. That includes the people who hit you up for your signature for unknown causes. I think Romney, Cain, and Johnson wise. By signing the pledge, they are also in some way signing their allegience to the organization.

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 4:29pmSounds like HankScram and a couple other people realize Romney is actually trying to position himself to win the general election rather than appeal only to the Tea Party as Palin and Bachman are. The idea that Democrats are “afraid” of Palin is ludicrous. The TP seem to think the represent the average American but that’s false. Romney actually has a chance to win.

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 4:38pmThe truth is before you, Romney is disingenuous, the fact and proof are in his stance. A Mormon, a man of strong faith (and Mormons believe that abortion is the most abominable sin that exists in these days), and yet he cannot sign this pledge that is as straight to the point as to leave no doubt what it means. The truth is before you, I believe that abortuion IS the most abominable sin happening today, I am a Mormon, I would NOT vote for Romney, we don’t have the luxury of waiting for another 4 years after this coming election, our country will not, cannot survive.

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 5:05pmHankscram… I completely agree with your comment. Signing it merely binds him. Why bind yourself by your words when it’s not necessary. Besides, this also immediately ostracizes yourself from anyone that may not be heavily pro-life.
Report Post »I am 100% pro life, but if I were running for POTUS, I would have a hard time signing that simply because it’s not necessary and it does bind you to your words. There’s nothing wrong with being bound by your words, but why unnecessarily do it in this case?
Furthermore, I could see this as a bad precedent. What other special interest groups will now want candidates to sign their own pledges??
I don’t think Romney not signing this is a bad thing.

I didn’t see any post about the winner of the RLC Straw Poll in New Orleans….
“Paul won 612 votes to Huntsman’s 382. Michele Bachmann came in third with 191 votes and Herman Cain finished behind her, taking 104 votes.”

Nope instead I just see garbage on Romney. I wonder if the media is trying to silence/smear Ron Paul?????

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 8:04pmIn Romney’s personal blog, he writes his own pro-life pledge and explains why he supports the Susan B. Anthony List while not being able to sign it. He could have just signed the pledge to try and increase voter approval, but instead he chose the path of honesty after thoughtful consideration. I would like to see the response of other candidates to Romney’s view as written in his pledge. http://mittromney.com/blogs/mitts-view/2011/06/my-pro-life-pledge

Posted on June 19, 2011 at 12:49amWell, the RINO Mitt Romney is definitely off my list especially since I am for the founding fathers type nation and Romney never was for it. The MSM and the liberals are trying as usual to fool people into thinking that the GOP cannot win unless it is with Romney. To that I say BS! On this story though, I was looking at Herman Cain as a possibility but now I see that Romney, Cain and Johnson are not on my books at all. I WILL do all that I can to promote anyone else that shows us that they are a TRUE conservative.
Report Post »“signing the pledge could mean promising to “strip taxpayer funding from thousands of health-care facilities, including (Veterans Administration) hospitals around the country.”
What the heck is VA hospitals doing abortions for? It is hard enough for veterans to get the care they deserve but they can’t because the VA is using the money to do abortions??? ANY medical facility that murders babies should NOT get any kind of taxpayer funding. And anyone that protects those facilities, such apparently as Romney, has no businees becoming president since if they support funding facilities that murder babies means that they are also responsible for any and all babies that are murdered in that facility and I will not vote for a murderer. Especially since anyone that does support someone that is like that will also be held FULLY accountable by God for that. Anyone that thinks different than that does not know God!

Posted on June 19, 2011 at 3:10amBREAKING NEWS: ROMNEY ISSUED HIS OWN PRO-LIFE PLEDGE:
This is proof of a true leader. Someone that would foresee problems that would come from something like a pledge and decide to take the hard road and deny to sign it. Yes he was skewered by the media for it, but he knew he had to take the higher road, the harder road. This bill would tie his hands when the needed to be a president. So in this sense he showed he could be a leader instead of a follower to this pledge and that is when he came out with his own pledge. ( Available at: http://tiny.cc/0pcmh )
This may also be a plus to Herman Cain, showing that he too is a leader, yet he hasn’t written his own pledge, but may in the future.
TRUE LEADERS FORSEE THE PROBLEMS THAT MAY COME, FIGHT THEM, AND CREATE PLANS TO COMBAT THESE PROBLEMS.

Posted on June 19, 2011 at 9:53amGood for Romney. He shouldn’t be expected to have to sign a statement that either endorses or condemns abortion, as that is none of his business as a Presidential candidate. Instead, give him a statement that endorses giving states the right to choose their own policies, and see if he signs THAT.
