(TheBlaze/AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he has “paid taxes every year — and a lot of taxes.”

Romney on Friday rejected claims by Harry Reid, the Democratic leader of the Senate, and other Democrats that Romney has used loopholes to avoid paying taxes for a decade on his income.

Campaigning in Reid’s home state of Nevada, Romney told reporters at a presser those claims are “patently, simply false.” He said Reid needs to stop spreading rumors.

“And by the way Harry, I understand what you’re trying to do. You’re trying to deflect the fact that jobs numbers are bad, that Americans are out of work, and you‘re trying to throw anything up on the screen that will grab attention away from the fact that the policies of the White House haven’t worked,” Romney continued. “So, Harry Reid is simply wrong.”

Reid told the Huffington Post on Tuesday that an investor with Bain Capital called his office and gave him the tip. Though he refuses to identify the source of such explosive allegations, Reid promises it is an “extremely credible” source.

Reid even went as far as saying that Romney’s father, George, “must be so embarrassed about his son.”

The Republican presidential candidate has released his 2010 tax return and an estimate of his 2011 taxes, but has refused to release information for prior years. He says his political rivals will exploit the information.

In 2010, Romney paid 13.9 percent tax on income of $21.6 million.

Reid indicated Friday that he will not be backing down from his attacks on Romney’s tax records. He even called him ‘the most secretive presidential candidate since Richard Nixon.’

“Forget about president — Mitt Romney couldn’t get confirmed as a cabinet secretary,” Reid said in a statement. “The contents of the one year of returns he has released would probably be enough to tank his nomination anyway: secret overseas bank accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands, tax avoidance tricks and a lower tax rate than middle-class families pay.”

Reid went on: “In short, Romney’s message to Nevadans is this: he won’t release his taxes, but he wants to raise yours.

    George Romney, Mitts father, released 12 years of tax returns when he was running for the Republican nomination for President and said that all who run for the highest office in the land should do the same. Romney, of all people, should honor his fathers request. Why would he not?

      Because this is NOT about Romney’s taxes — it is about Harry Reid‘s RUMOR mill to get the spotlight on Mitt and off of Harry’s abuse of power by BLOCKING Senate votes to repeal ObamaCare and Audit the Fed. WHAT is Harry afraid of? Could it be that he doesn’t trust his peers to vote for his agenda plan? Would these Senators vote to repeal Obamacare and vote to Audit the Fed.?

Now there are only three idiots left – Trump, Arpio and BLACKYB. The only question is, how certain are you that Romney has nothing to hide? He’s been rich for a very long time. And rich people are very often arrogant with their sense of privilege. personally, I think Romney is dirty as hell. And I believe a lot of you conservatives believe the same thing.

      You have to figure that the Obama administration has access to Romney’s taxes, right? So what does that tell you? (Careful, I know some things about Romney and Bain’s approach to opposition research on business partners. Not only that, I’ve spoken with God and He told me Romney will never be president.)

      @WEST COAST PATRIOT… It’s common knowledge the standard has been two years of returns like Clinton, Bush and OBAMA did… and he’s met that criteria.

      Reid was asked for one year of returns by McClatchy News and he refused. He’s never shown any of his… typical double standard from the Left… AGAIN.

      This ****** me off more than anything about Romney who I support. He has been running for President for 7 years and he had to know at least for those years he would need to reveal his finances completely if he expected to be elected. He should have cleaned up anything that would be considered negative such as Swiss or other off shore bank account shelters when he chose to run. He should publish all of his tax returns tomorrow and take whatever hit they are going to cause now than let things drip, drip, out in the the weeks just before the election because you know damn well the opposition has copies of his returns and is hoping he won’t release them.

      Why wont Romney just release them and put this to rest? Does he think they will just forget it? Romney will go up in the polls if he releases the info and there is nothing there. He will go down in the polls if he doesnt release them.

      Of course maybe the same reason Romney says Obama and team are bring this up is the same reason Romney is keeping it alive. Romney says Obama wants to focus on this instead of problems and solutions. I would venture to say Romney wants to keep it alive for that very reason also. He offers not solutions and only continues the failed policies as Obama.

      If Reid thinks most middle class families pay that much or more every year, then I want to join the middle-class HE hangs out with!

      Nearly everyone I know who identifies as ‘middle class’ got a 4-digit tax REFUND this year…paid for by hefty tax burden individuals such as Mr Romney. Thanks for paying our share, Mitt!

      In case someone doesn’t understand what a “snipe” is…LET ME TELL A STORY;” As a kid my uncle invited all the neighborhood boys on a snipe hunt. Explained they needed flashlights and a big hat, after dark.. He took them to a wooded country lane and had them follow single file to the tree the ‘snipe’ was last seen in. Something fell to the ground, and the boy with a flashlight threw the hat over it, then when he lifted it all the boys grabbed to catch the snipe…and the boy above nearly fell out of the tree laughing because he’d done a “Number 2” in the tree above and all the boys who grabbed had brown stinky hands to wash in the creek nearby! We girls were no longer mad he took only boys!

    Besides, there is no precident for Presidents or nominess releasing college transcripts, there is precident going back over 30 years for 2 years of tax returns being released.

      You people are ridiculous. The “tax return” BS is a continuation of the left trying to devide vs unite this country. It is absolutely obvious. I don’t care how rich Romney is. As far as I’m concerned so is Obama. They are both very successful because they are both more intelligent than the average American. The difference is that Romney has morals and he understands how the economy works. You may not like Romney because you are jealous that he is rich, don’t like is hair or his religion but there is no contest who is the most qualified and trustworthy candidate to run this country.

      Here’s the point for all you Obama lovers; he promised and all but guaranteed that he would fix the problem that he daily blames Bush for (even though the facts don’t support that) and hasn’t done it. He’s actually made it worse. If you don‘t believe that you’re head is in the sand.

      Part of me hopes that he will be re-elected because I am one that thinks it needs to actually get worse before people will WAKE THE F UP!

      Okay, lets set aside the fact that he has already released one year and has committed to release a second. What do you think is a more effective tool for the democrats; their current strategy of making baseless, desperate accusations and inferences (he’s a felon and so on…), or having his tax returns and being able to rail on Mitt for only paying 15% on capital gains (even though he was actually double-taxed on that money)? The will attack him on anything that they can. I personally would rather have them across as desperate, crazed, jerks with their current line of attacks than having anything fact-based that they could distort into an attack.

      Let me be clear, I would not have a problem with Mitt releasing his tax returns if it was of his own volition in order to provide the public with additional information about himself; in other words, to be transparent. However, transparency is not what this tax hullabaloo is about. What is currently happening is an attempts a coercion for the purpose of obtaining ammo to attack Mitt because he is rich. They have to attack him on this because they really don’t have anything else on him. They didn’t get much traction on the last tax return he released and so they figured that they would give it another go with multiple years of returns.

      It seems to me the democrats have convinced independents that Romney’s tax record matters. We’ll find out if that is true or not. Let’s not pretend democrats have no other ways to attack Romney – this is just the attack of the month. Here are some other things we have seen or will be seeing:

      1.) Romney’s flip flops on guns, taxes, size of government, abortion (remember what the republicans did to John Kerry
      2.) Bain Capital – their business model, crony capitalism, and the dispute over what Romney is responsible for (Romney owned the company during their woeful 1999-2002 years)
      3.) Romney’s bad business record as MA Governor (compared to other states)
      4.) Mormonism
      5.) Romneycare and Romney supporting a national individual mandate (hypocrite)

All wealthy people- like Pelosi, Kerry .. a ton of Democrats – have their taxes prepared by advisors who use LEGAL measures to save as much as they can.       JRook – Romney didn’t make the tax laws. Everyone should take advantage of the loopholes until the tax code is changed. You can bet every member of Congress, if they are smart enough, uses the current tax code to his/her advantage. They are just playing to the people who are gullible enough to buy into this crap, like Mutiny. Say it enough times to arouse suspicion – they don’t care about the truth. By the way, Romney is not the Republican candidate yet so he doesn’t owe anybody this information at this time. David Axelrod did the same thing to Herman Cain! This is Chicago thuggery at its best. Raise suspicion – no one will look for the truth and we will be in control when it comes to light that we lied. We can stack the US Supreme Court to defend us. We can’t be arrested for treason because we have the DOJ in our pockets.

      Wake up people, our biggest threat is the number of terrorist connected people in this administration including the military and the Pentagon. Human rights means Sharia Law to radical Islam and they are very open about destroying the US and the western way of life. Which congress woman said the other day if you are against Sharia Law, you are a bigot? That should scare the hell out of every American!

      I would like to see a list of all the Tax’s the many companies Romeny managed, PAID to the “Government Stupid” waste fund, including every employee’s SSI PONZI scheme contribution, that each company had to pay.     Define “ taxes” . Sure he has paid alot in property or sales but we are asking about federal income/captial gains taxes. Nice try to say you pay taxes but please be specific, we know he has issues wiht specifics.

The reason all of Obama’s personal records are sealed is because he loves to throw out accusations against people based on anything vague in public records.       Indeed, tax avoidance is a major problem to the IRS and they are vicious on it in any form; if Reid has such information he needs to turn it over to them and the FBI for investigation, otherwise it is purest of innuendo, lies, deception, character assassination and slander beyond belief.
