Romney Secures Double-Digit Win in Washington State GOP Caucuses

Romney Wins Washington State Republican Caucuses

(AP) –  Mitt Romney rolled to a double-digit victory in Washington state’s Republican presidential caucuses Saturday night, his fourth campaign triumph in a row and a fresh show of strength in the run-up to 10 Super Tuesday contests in all regions of the country.

Rick Santorum and Ron Paul battled for second place, while Newt Gingrich ran a distant fourth.

Romney said in a statement that his win meant Washington state’s voters “do not want a Washington insider in the White House. They want a conservative businessman who understands the private sector and knows how to get the federal government out of the way so that the economy can once again grow vigorously. ”

Romney’s West Coast victory came on the heels of twin primary triumphs over Santorum earlier in the week in hard-fought Michigan and lightly contested Arizona, as well as a narrow win over Paul in Maine caucuses earlier in February.

Returns from caucuses in 54 percent of Washington state’s precincts showed Romney with 38 percent of the vote, while Paul and Santorum each had 24 percent. Gingrich was drawing 8 percent.

There were 40 delegates at stake, and a likelihood that at least two of the contenders for the nomination to oppose President Barack Obama would add to their totals.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, had 173 delegates at the beginning of the day, according to an Associated Press count that includes party officials who will vote on the selection of a nominee but are not selected at primaries or caucuses. Santorum had 87, Gingrich 33 and Paul 20. It takes 1,144 delegates to win the nomination at the Republican National Convention this summer in Tampa.

The Republican race has shared the political spotlight in the past few days with a controversy in which conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh called a Georgetown University law student a “slut” and a “prostitute” – an issue that the GOP presidential rivals seemed reluctant to comment on.

Limbaugh apologized on his website during the evening to the woman, Sandra Fluke, who had spoken out publicly in favor of a requirement for most insurance coverage to include contraception.

Romney, Santorum and Gingrich were all campaigning in Ohio – the most intensely contested of the Super Tuesday states – as the first caucus returns were reported.

Romney criticized Obama after a woman attending a campaign rally in Beavercreek said she had a daughter stationed in Afghanistan who believes the U.S. mission there is unclear. The woman also asked when Romney would bring the troops home.

“If your daughter is not familiar with the mission that she’s on, how in the world can the commander in chief sleep at night, knowing that we have soldiers in harm‘s way that don’t know exactly, precisely, what it is that they’re doing there,” the former Massachusetts governor said.

He said he’d bring troops home “as soon as humanly possible – as soon as that mission is complete.”

Romney also said he would seek the repeal of legislation that passed Congress in 2002 to tighten accounting standards in the wake of the collapse of Enron and an ensuing scandal that cost shareholders millions of dollars.

Santorum spent the day in Ohio, where he touted his plan to improve the nation’s manufacturing base and said part of the effort must include a reduction in the number of children born out of wedlock. In Cincinnati, the former Pennsylvania senator said there’s less freedom in neighborhoods “where there are no dads.”

While polls show him in a close race with Romney in the state, it is not clear he can fully convert any success in the primary into delegate strength. There are 63 delegates at stake in Ohio, of which 48 will be allocated, three at a time, to the winners of the state’s 16 congressional districts. Santorum has only 30 of the 48 delegate slots filled for those contests.

Gingrich also campaigned in Ohio and drew laughs when he recalled what a voter in Tennessee had told him recently about rising gasoline prices. He said the man had said Obama has his own version of former candidate Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan: “He wants us to pay $9.99 a gallon.”

The former House speaker has said he must notch a Super Tuesday win in Georgia, where he launched his political career, but says he also has a chance to pick up delegates in Ohio.

Ron Paul was in Washington state as the caucuses began, searching for his first victory of the campaign.

It was a quirk in the campaign calendar that made Washington’s caucuses the relatively low-key event that they were, sandwiched between a high-stakes clash between Romney and Santorum in Michigan and next-up primaries and caucuses in 10 states with 419 delegates at stake.

Of the 10, Ohio is the crown jewel, a big industrial state where Romney and Santorum maneuvered for their next showdown, and where Gingrich said he hopes to pick up a few delegates as well.

Apart from Ohio and Georgia, there also are primaries in Massachusetts, where Romney was governor, and Virginia, where Gingrich and Santorum failed to qualify for the ballot. Other primaries are in Tennessee, Oklahoma and Vermont.

Alaska, North Dakota and Idaho have caucuses.

RINO is way overused… anyone who doesn’t fit one persons view of politics becomes a RINO.

Romney = Fiscal conservative part of Republicans
Santorum = Evangelical and Social Focused part of Republicans
Paul = Libertarian and Constitution part of Republicans
Gingrich = Get even with liberals and Progressive/big gov part of Republicans

While it is not cut and dry, the main focus of the candidate appeals to different part of the Republican voting bloc.

So in a way… if the main focus is the constitution, then all but Paul are RINO’s … if its social policy focus all but Santorum are RINO’s … so please everyone stop the RINO BS as it dumbifys the debate and makes Republicans sound like Liberals.

I see a candidate that is winning with only 38% of the Republican vote. How is he going to do when he needs the Independent vote? How about the disenfranchised Dem vote? What about the young vote? He cannot beat Obama people. Paul supporters will not vote for anyone but Paul, the Independents will not vote for a progressive, the young vote will not vote for Mitt Romney. The facts are the facts. Only Paul can beat Obama and does the best according to the latest polls.

Listen to his speech after the Washington caucuses. Pay close attention.

More Romney dirty tricks. The Caucus locations were opened EARLY, and packed with Romney supporters!!!……
Kennewick About 1,500 people were turned away from pooled Benton County caucuses in Kennewick by event organizers after rooms at the Three Rivers Convention Center reached capacity this morning.
Some potential caucus voters said they arrived at 9 a.m. to find the large hallways at the convention center packed to the rafters and were told no more people could enter the caucus rooms.
Ray Swenson, a Richland lawyer, criticized local GOP officials for poor organization and said the results today should be invalidated.
“I think it’s illegal,” Swenson shouted to a gathered crowd, many of whom were filming him with cell phone cameras. “The Republican party leadership is taking away our freedom.”
Swenson told the Herald he may file a lawsuit seeking to invalidate the caucus results.
“I think it’s unconstitutional,” he said. “Our right to vote is the most fundamental right in the Constitution. … This is exactly equal to walking into a polling place and being told, ‘We’ve run out of ballots. We didn’t expect this many people. Go home.’”…

When you read the results you have to compare santorum+gingrich versus romney. romney almost always loses. If gingrich drops out, almost all those votes go to santorum – no doubt about it.

The paul votes could go either way, but many would vote for neither.

Romney would lose a head-to-head matchup against santorum and against gingrich. There is no doubt about it. That is the strategy – to divide the conservative vote and Romney sneak through with only 35% of the vote. That is why we started off with 7 conservative candidates and 1 moderate (romney). Imagine if we had two moderates and only one conservative…

When conservatives split the vote – they will always lose. That is how mccain was able to win. He would of lost head-to-head against romney or huck in 2004. The establishment has set the table against us

The big warning flag here is that even in relatively liberal Washington State, Romney still cannot get 50% of the vote. The only reason he is even a contender is because his opponents are splitting the conservative and libertarian vote three ways. The problem is that none of the three are willing to step aside and so Milquetoast Mitt takes another win.

Honestly, who is voting for this guy. I do not know one person voting for Romney. Its either some kind of con or we are the dumbest people that have ever lived on this earth.

What can Romney debate Obama on? Where is the difference?

      War? NO
      Debt? NO
      Spending? NO
      Freedoms? NO
      Healthcare mandates? NO
      2nd amendment? NO
      Abortion? NO

Dont get excited Santorum and Gingrich fans, your guys are just as bad.

The most important issue we face is the debt and spending. The budgets the four GOP candidates have been looked at and only one cuts spending and reduces our deficit. I think this is our last shot before it collapses.

I love all you digital patriots you care so much for the nation you would rather turn your backs on the nation &WHOMEVER gets the GOP nomination thus handing the election over to Obama. Great! Oh yea thats the truth you are all a bunch of whiney poor sports.. “my guy didnt win so Im going to write in _“ ”Im gong to support _ to go third party” Yea good do it at least the PO’d voters will know exactly whom to blame when Obama gets re-elected oh and I promise I will make sure everyone knows exactly who to blame… you all better start looking for a rock to hide under if you try to push a 3rd party candidate. You remind me of Al Sharpton Race Baiting.

      Some people just don’t like a man who speaks and thinks like this…… Y O U are the B I G O T !!!!!

As for his experience running the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, Romney says, “”the whole winter games was a combination of the federal, state and local governments along with private enterprise.”
“We actually received over $410 million from the federal government for the Olympic games. That is a huge increase over anything ever done before and we did that by going after every agency of government,” he says.

      http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/03/exclusive-in-02-romney-touted-d-c-connections-federal-funds/

“She said, ‘Why don’t I get the Department of Education to buy tickets to the Paralympics so that high school and grade school kids can go to the Paralympics?’ She literally got, I believe the number was over $1 million from the Department of Education, funding to buy tickets for kids,” Romney said. “This way we got kids there and we also got additional revenues that we wouldn’t have had. That kind of creativity I want to bring to everything we do.”

Most of them will end up, I hope, voteing their wallets, and that is the issue. Who can fix that? Not the dems, they have proven that over the last three years, but a man who knows business and wants to get us back on track appeals to every American. It’s what Reagon asked-are you better off now than you were? The answer is no. So most Americans, repub and dem are asking themselves who is best to fix it. The answer, no matter how you slice it, is Romney. If we want to survive to get our freedoms back, it starts with surviving finacialy, and dems and repubs know it.

A big problem in America is the people believing that government creates anything. Government is not supposed to be a business as when it tries, it fails miserably. All you people buy into all the campaign promises election after election, you blame the problems on the other party without realizing that the other party is no different. This is why Paul is the answer, he says he will not go into a state and try to figure out what he can promise them in the form of subsidies or anything else except a promise of liberty, sound money and a prosperous economy. Go to this intervies and if you do not want to listen to all of it, click at the 5:50 mark and listen to Paul’s answer there.

Romney is nothing more than a sheep in wolf’s clothing. He is a progressive republican who is in bed with the same banksters and corporate elites that have gotten us in the mess we are in. He supports bailouts, the fed and TARP. He believes in and promotes the same ideas of the progressive left, such as man made global climate change, minimum wage laws, cap and trade, government mandates for health care. He supports the continued theft of our freedoms through the NDAA and Patriot Act. He also supports the far right war mongers and will continue to support wars and nation building; Iraq and Afghanistan have turned out so well, not to mention all of the Arab Spring uprisings supported by this country. Which means there is a 60 percent out there that will not vote Romney.
      _________________

No, that’s not what that means at all.
It means 60% are not voting for Romney RIGHT NOW. But most of those people will when he is the nominee and goes up against Romney.
See, that’s how the primaries work.
You vote for the person you want.
When the entire country decides who the nominee is, whether it ends up being the guy you wanted or not, you vote for the nominee. Or, you can sit at home or cast a 3rd party ballot like a sore loser and hand BHO another 4.

But he did the math, and knew it was not his time. 2012 will be the year he wins the White House, and kicks out the liberals. @freedom

Well I believe it will be a Obama landslide regardless who we put on the ticket.

Santorum voted for every bill Bush wanted. He will be shown as a Bush Jr. guy. Not to mention if people actually looked at his record they would see he really isnt a conservative. Hell he isnt even that socially conservative, he has voted for gun control and has been pro choice. He doesnt believe in individual freedoms and thinks the government should have control over many aspects of your life. Santorum, has no chance pulling conservative democrats or independents.

Gingrich is viewed as a big hypocrite for going after Clinton for affairs will having them going on at the same time. He sat on a couch with Pelosi, has been for a health care mandate, and overall he comes off like a dick. His budget is the worst budget of the 4 GOP candidates.

Romney has been for almost every position Obama stands for at any given race he has been in. Guns, abortion, Ndaa, patriot act, wars, spending, taxes, you name it Romney will shape shift to make you happy. He clearly doesnt understand economics with his plan to raise the minimum wage. He will have issues with his base being a Mormon, say what you want but it is a issue. Finally, do I even need to put Romneycare on here?

SO Soybean, who is it you believe is going so save our nation with out having a revolutionary war ? Some of who are “realist”, recognize this nation is so far divided at the present moment, to bring Paul in would require a literal military backing to establish his policies, as so many people are are the government nipple. The time is coming for that change, but it isn’t possible yet. Romney would be the ideal candidate who is not only the one who can beat Obama, but also will begin the process of downsizing this government and getting our debt paid back. IN the mean time, elect our Congressman and Senators so in 4 years we can bring in Rubio or someone of the cloth. This is just being realistic. Santorum and Newt would get smeared in the general. Besides, Newt has plans of his own and Santorum would be playing tug a war with his conscience the entire time as he tried to do the right thing but still take care of his buds.
If you believe Romney is taking us to the same place as Obama, then I assure you, you are disillusion. I am not sure just how you think this will be possible ?? Not to mention the many candidates we already have in Congress who can hold the line and also the many more we will bring in next election. Romney is the perfect person to begin down this road.

The first round of delegates were selected today. The second round on april 14th will be the round that selects the county delegates, who will then meet to select the state delegates, who will then go to florida and cast their vote. So it‘s no where near over and what occurred today is a straw poll and doesn’t hold any real weight. What matters is the delegates that will be selecting the delegates. Hence, why the Paul campaign has been pushing and pushing to get their folks to the caucas and become delegates.

All because gov gregwhore cut the primary voting (that’s the process we use to use where everybody got a chance to vote instead of caucusing) to save 10million off the budget.

Thats the straw poll, who cares! Figure out who got the delegates and then you’ll see who is really winning the race in Washington. As I have just come from our caucus today, I’ve learned a valuable lesson that the straw poll in no way reflects what the delegate count is.

      Captain77,
Yes but for any candidate, I want to know what they are going to do to save the country, because just cutting taxes some isn’t nowhere near enough. I think it‘s that even still people don’t really understand just how much money 16 trillion is, and it’s actually far more.

So 2/3 of the people still prefer a conservative republican – but somehow that becomes a win for willard

Romney is conservative. Santorum’s voting record is not.
