Romney Surrogate Sununu Says He Wishes Obama ‘Would Learn How to be an American’ — And Reuters Throws Out the Term ‘Birther’

Former New Hampshire Governor and leading Romney surrogate John Sununu on Tuesday accused the Obama campaign staff of being a “bunch of liars” and suggested during a morning conference call with reporters that President Barack Obama doesn’t understand how the U.S. economy works.
“The president clearly demonstrated that he has absolutely no idea how the economy functions,” said Sununu in reference to President Obama’s “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that” speech.
“The men and women all over America who have worked hard to build these businesses, their businesses from the ground up is how our economy became the envy of the world — it is the American way.”
“I wish this president would learn how to be an American,” he added.
And with those 11 words, Sununu has just about every left-leaning blogger and journalist in the country up in arms. In fact, Reuters even suggests that the former governor waded into “birther” territory with his remarks.
“Obama has repeatedly sought to end speculation by many conservatives that he was not born in the United States and thus not legally able to serve as president,” Reuters reports.
“Romney has repeatedly tried to avoid the so-called ‘birther’ issue, and Sununu was quick to retreat from his statement,” the report adds.
He has since issued a clarification:
What I thought I said, but I guess I didn’t say, is that the president has to learn the American formula for creating business. The American formula for creating business is not to have government create business.
The American formula for creating business, that I wish he would get comfortable with, is to create a climate in which entrepreneurs can thrive. If I didn’t give all of that detail I apologize.
But even after explaining his “learn how to be an American” comments, many on the left still think Sununu went too far.
“The Romney campaign has officially gone off the deep end,” said Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith. “The question is what else they’ll pull to avoid answering serious questions about Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital and investments in foreign tax havens and offshore accounts.”
“This meltdown and over-the-top rhetoric won’t make things better — it only calls attention to how desperate they are to change the conversation,” she added.
Of course, if we want to start talking about going off “the deep end,” perhaps the Obama campaign should do something about that whole “Hey, you know, Romney could totally be a felon” campaign it started last week.
UPDATE — After Sununu’s remarks, MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell asked former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty what he thought of the rhetoric coming out the Romney campaign.
Pawlenty responded by noting that not only did Sununu clarify his remarks, but that the former governor of New Hampshire has always been a little colorful:

The man attended many schools abroad and clearly has little familiarity with real down home American culture. I’ve commented on this for several years now, and I’m not even vaguely a “birther”. If I were born in North Carolina (and hey, I was) and then live 1/2+ of my childhood in an utterly alien culture outside these united States, I suspect I might not fully grasp a lot of fundamental things about America either when I returned.

And real Americans move their money into offshore accounts so that they can exploit the tax laws and perhaps even hide money. You people can’t even be honest with yourselves. You really support an investment banker who’s friends brought down the US banking system and lied about the LIBOR rate. No doubt all honest, high integrity and men of great character. It’s probably a surprise to many that liberals see the President as having gone far too far to the right on any legislation passed during administration. Personally I‘m surprised he’s gotten anything passed given the Republican obstructionism. Anything viewed as something Obama would like to see passed, even if it was their idea to start with, even they sponsored the bill, no Republican is going to vote for even if it’s a vote in favor of mothers and apple pie. Little suprise America has lost faith in Congress.
And yes, many see Romney as too flaky and too far left (especially given his past statements). Both side would like alternatives. Sorry, there aren’t any.
Here‘s what I don’t get about Romney though. Why does he need a car elevator? Anyone can tell you it takes initial cost, and less energy long term to move a person up or down than a car up or down. It’s depends on mass and size. Yet Romney’s new house has a car elevator. I found this helpful video, but I still don’t get it. In your home?

It used to be that you didn’t have to be a right wing extremist to be a republican, but no, that all changed with the evangelical invasion of the republican party. I don’t support Ron Paul, but he is one of the few true republicans left, along with Gary Johnson. This country truly would be better of with the republican party of Barry Goldwater.

You ever read a poll? The vast majority of Americans agree with the christian positon on just about every issue. You Libertarians whine about never being able to win an election and then try to blame us christians for it. It not for us genius, John Kerry would have been elected. WE carried Bush over the finish line. Let’s see, everywhere gay marriage has been left to the voters, it gets voted down by a large margin. EVEN on the Left Coast.
Try again newbie. Believe it or not, politics has been around before Ron Paul ran for president. I’m tired of all these Johnny-Come-Lately libertarians thinking they know better than I do what conservatism is on what our party stands for.

The tea party and its xtian ilk have made us the laughing stock of the rest of the 1st world, from “keep your government hands off my medicare!” mentality to injecting the psuedo science of creationism into science classrooms. How’s that Lochness monster as proof of creationism going for you?

Maybe you didn’t read my post properly, but I mean christian invasion of the republican party not of America in general. You tea partyers have no idea what you’re saying when you say rino, saying so shows your ignorance of the republican party’s recent past. My father was a proud republican up to the late 80′s, but sadly the new found irrational religious extremism of the party forced him to register as independent. It isn’t long until the tea party implodes and goes back to being an extremist fringe on the corners of America.

Posted on July 17, 2012 at 7:03pmThe original Libertarians were fiscally Conservative and socially Liberal (quasi-cons). They were too Liberal on social issues for the Republican Party and too Conservative on fiscal issues for the Democrats. They tried to split the difference.
While many people by nature actually “lean” Libertarian, they didn’t support the party with votes. Foreign policy issues were/are always in the background.
The newer breed of Rothbardian (Ron Paul) Libertarians are different. They are fiscally Conservative and vehement anti-war (isolationist and pacifist). Social issues are not agreed upon, but they usually lean very left. Paul is “personally” pro-life (but would kick abortion to the states = dead babies) while Gary Johnson is pro-choice (dead babies). Again, the newer Rothbardian/Ron Paul Libertarians are too Conservative for the Democrats fiscally and far to the left of most Republicans on foreign policy and most social issues (neo-Libs).
They are trying to take over the Republican Party because their attempts to grow the Libertarian Party failed.

Despite this, Libertarians tend to bristle at bold moral pronouncements that would encourage private virtue and the fear that should such sentiments take firm hold, they will be legislated and forestall the Libertarian utopia. But Libertarians have it precisely backwards. As Edmund Burke said…

For not only do they help shape moral compasses, thereby increasing governance “from within,” insofar as that internal control is lacking, but the social pressure attending the codes serves to govern from without. And insofar as this social control is lacking, governmental control fills the vacuum. As freedom from morality waxes, freedom from legality wanes.
Ultimately, the tragic consequence of the Libertarian mentality is that it guarantees the left’s victory in the battle for civilization. This is because, in Libertarians’ failure to fight for hearts and minds in the cultural realm, they cede it to leftists, who aren’t shy about advancing their “values.” And proof of this is in the social pudding. You see, if talk of establishing social codes and traditions sounds stifling, know that we haven’t dispensed with such things that is impossible. Rather, the left has succeeded in replacing our traditional variety with something called “political correctness,” which describes a set of codes powerful enough to control the jokes we make and words we use, get people hired or fired, and catapult a man to the Presidency based partially on the color of his skin.

People will vote in accordance with their worldview no matter what you do. Thus, he who shapes hearts and minds today wins political power tomorrow.
The Libertarian chant ..["I don't care what you do, just lemme alone"] sounds very reasonable, indeed. But as hate-speech laws, forcing people to buy health insurance, and a thousand other nanny-state intrusions prove, when people become morally corrupt enough, they don’t leave you alone. They tyrannize you. A prerequisite for anything resembling Libertarian government is cast-iron morality in the people. And we should remember that, to echo Thomas Paine, “Virtue is not hereditary.”
For this reason, neither is liberty. Scream “Live and let live!” loudly enough in the moral sphere, and in the hearts of men the Devil will live… and the republic will die.

Thankfully, the Constitution provides all the answers we need and if you want to give the federal government additional power – just ammend the Constitution.
