Romney Tells Gingrich He Would ‘Fire’ Him Over His Moon Colony Proposal

In what was perhaps one of the more lively GOP debates among the entire spectrum of showdowns thus far, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney lampooned rival Newt Gingrich for his proposal to colonize the moon and accused the former House speaker of pandering to Florida’s Space Coast.

“I spent 25 years in business. If I had a business executive come to me and say they wanted to spend a few hundred billion dollars to put a colony on the moon, I’d say, ‘You’re fired!’” Romney said matter-of-factly.

Mocking the prospect of using private entities to fund a lunar colony, Romney added, “The idea that corporate America wants to go off to the moon and build a colony there, it may be a big idea, but it’s not a good idea.”

Here’s the clip:

CBS reports:

Gingrich on Wednesday laid out an extensive plan to have a permanent U.S. base on the moon by the end of his second term as president. He said that once 13,000 Americans were living on the moon, the colony could apply for statehood. The promise could appeal to Florida’s space industry, which has struggled since NASA ended the U.S. shuttle program in 2011.

In Florida, he said, Gingrich promises to spend “untold amounts of money” on a moon colony, while he promises a new Veterans Health Administration hospital in New Hampshire and a new interstate highway in South Carolina.

“This idea of going state to state and promising what people want to hear, promising billions, hundreds of billions of dollars to make people happy, that‘s what got us into the trouble we’re in now,” Romney said. “We’ve got to say no to this kind of spending.”

Developing a lunar base would cost “hundreds of billions, if not trillions,” Romney said, adding, “I’d rather be rebuilding housing here in the U.S.”

In response, Gingrich reminded that he helped pass the 1997 Balanced Budget Act to balance the federal budget while doubling the size of the National Institutes of Health, “because we set priorities.”

“It is possible to do the right things in the right order to make this a bigger, richer, more exciting country,” he said.

Sorry, Romney. The U.S. Department of Labor and Human Rights would never allow you to fire Newt because he suffers from “foot in mouth disease” and He is a protected class in this country. You are really out of touch with the common man; the fearless leader will fine you and demand your first born son and 16 trillion dollars.

I liked Paul’s answer the best. “I’d like to send some of these politicians to the moon.”

Newt just proved how out of touch with reality he is.

We’re broke. We’re borrowing 43 cents of every dollar to carry out an unsustainable agenda, and he want’s to “colonize the moon.”

How ’bout we focus on getting our own house in order, before we go around the world telling everyone else how to act? That idea sounds more reasonable than colonizing the moon.

Newt isn’t on the ballot for Virginia, and even in his own state of Georgia. He’s a pompous paper tiger. The GOP is going to lose without Paul. Period.

Romney would have fired Columbus for his stupid ideas, and also nixed the Apollo program as well. At least, if that’s what would get him elected. What is visionary to some is purely hogwash and fantasy to others. The American space program helped spur inventiveness and innovation like nothing else in our history. Today, Obama has basically thrown it all into the trash.

There’s an impractical idea. What would 13 people do on the moon, let along 13,000? There‘s nothing on the moon that can’t be found on Earth (because the moon is made of the Earth). You can’t farm. How would they pay their way? It would cost trillions even to try. Of course, Newt doesn’t really mean this. It‘s simply an outrageous remark to get his name to stick in uninformed voter’s minds.

And no, Obama didn’t kill the space program. Bush retired the shuttles. And if you hadn’t noticed, some people are concerned about the deficit. Who exactly is going to approve large sums of money for an ambitious space program these days? Nobody that’s who, least of all the Republicans.

Pamela you do recognize the fact that this debate was in Florida which has always been related to the space program and the amount of jobs that it contributed to. There is no right time for big ideas if you don’t bring the ideas to the forefront to explore.

I’m sure you all see the difference between the “space race” and Newt’s ideas. The space race was not about creating jobs, or simply “exploring” – it was about technological superiority and weaponry over the Russians (communism in general). That was a NEED, a moon colony is a WANT.

I’m also sure all of our parents taught us the difference between a need and a want and which we should “buy” when money is tight.

Apparently Romney isn’t rich enough to understand the wants to explore space! Many rich people who give up millions for the opportunity! One recently paid $20,000,0000 just to go into space, imagine what they would pay to visit and stand on the moon? But hey, not need to explore the moon right? We can’t learn anything new from the moon right? There is potentially no energy source on the moon right? No natural resources right? How would we now without going there? Imagine if we all still thought the world was flat and Newt want to send a ship out to explore the horizon? You never know what we might discover along the way of traveling to the moon but Romney’s mind is just like a typical liberals, it’s a vacuum! Romney would rather regress and go back to bicycles and wind mills and horse drown carriages and teaching kids in school about gays, lesbians and sex rather than science and math.

I understand that exploring the moon has possibilities and that we could benefit from them, however to most Americans who are not familar with the issue and simply do care the whole moon thing makes Newt sound wacko. He picked the wrong time to address this and gave Romney a chance to make a few remarks that those people will agree with. If Santorim had more money to back him he could still be in the race.I look for him to have to back out due to his campaign finances. The last thing we need is all of this back and forth trashing between the republicans. They are dividing the party and who ever gets the nomination will have to run with all the baggage from these debates. It keeps playing into the hands of the progressives and I they need stop and stick to the issues at hand and explain what they intend to do about them. I wish West and Rubio were running. The old saying “you are cutting off your nose to spite your face.” is whats happening to our candidates. We are in serious trouble and had better start getting our ducks in a row if we want any chance of victory in 2012. In our local paper in what is called the community voice, we are finally seeing people who are tired of Obama. Which is unusual for this area. Even on FB I am seeing more and more people frustrated with our president and posting articles against him, and the progressive movement.. and I hope this bashing within our party does not push supporters away. We need as many on our side as we can get.

Mike Reagan says such claims are false.
Even Rush Limbaugh, shocked by the Romney claims, chimed on his Thursday radio broadcast to say, “This is obviously a coordinated attack to take Newt out here in Florida.”
Rush slammed the Romney-backed smear campaign against Newt.

“Recently I endorsed Newt Gingrich for president because I believe that Newt is the only Republican candidate who has both consistently backed the conservative policies that my father championed and the only Republican that will continue to implement his vision.
“It surprises me that Mitt Romney and his supporters would raise this issue — when Mitt by his own admission voted for Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale who opposed my father, and later supported liberal Democrat Paul Tsongas for president.
“As governor of Massachusetts, Romney’s achievement was the most socialistic healthcare plan in the nation up until that time.

Do you really need to be told why the idea of the government building a “moon colony” is a bad idea? lol.

I guess building ANYTHING wouldn’t be a “bad idea” (except for the “death star”) if we could just print money… oh wait, we do that… so I guess you’re right, we’ll just print the money to do it.

Also, lets not get confused between the “space race” and these Newtered ideas. The space race was about technological superiority and weaponry above the communists. That was a NEED, not a WANT. We needed to establish that superiority for national security issues. Most people understand that we don’t go out and buy the “wants” when we can’t even afford the “needs”.

Once this country has so much money that we can’t figure out what to buy next, then we can start building colonies on the moon. Better yet, IF WE HAD ENOUGH MONEY TO BUILD A COLONY ON THE MOON, MAYBE THAT IS ANOTHER SIGN WE SHOULD LOWER TAXES AND SHRINK GOVERNMENT!!!

So long story short – if the PRIVATE SECTOR wants to build a colony on the moon, then GREAT! But you and Newt are reaching FAR BEYOND the constitutional limits of what our government should be using OUR TAX DOLLARS for.

Now, think of last night. Get the picture? Even if Newt were such an El Supremo debater, he would never be able to get a sitting president to engage in the extensive debates that Newt (ever arrogantly, ever grandiose) claims he will “force” Obama into.

real wacky idea correct let me see United States sends up the space shuttle attaches to the space station and then returns home only to land on a runway right? Then we have the Chinese and the Russians still pick them out of the water on their return home which is a more viable option? Which would spur the intellect of our children with new capabilities of space travel? Let’s see as a child growing up I seem to recall Ray guns as fiction.

Bush hating conservatives was the money withdrawn from the Swiss accounts before or after wiki-leaks? Answer the question and you are aware that most of Mitt Romney‘s campaign staff have been heavily invested in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae aren’t you? That means an investment wherein if they should fail like they have in the past we the people have stepped in and bailed them out so therefore the investment has not fail. Now you are aware Mr. Romney states that pensions in such have invested in these institutions. Why would that be too big to fail so therefore the investment is secure because the taxpayers for the better part has propped them up? If Freddie and Fannie Mac were to become insolvent or very weak do you honestly believe Mr. Romney would have his money parked there? Reality sucks?

Is open bigotry against the Mormons the last of its kind in America? Mormons do not have the protection that other oppressed minorities do because they have been declared mainstreamed. Are they?

helium-3, a rare helium isotope that is missing a neutron. Physicists have yet to achieve pure helium-3 fusion, but if they did, we’d have a clean, virtually infinite power source. And that’s where the moon comes in. The moon’s lunar soil is chock-full of helium reserves, thanks to the solar wind.

Right like people believing Jesus walked on water and raised people from the dead. How Jesus redeemed all man kind through his suffering. Why is believing that a man of God as they call him was able to translate an old language into the Book of Mormon. Christians are always telling Mormon’s they are crazy and they themselves believe some amazing unverifyable things. I might add Mormon’s believe in the Biblical Jesus not in the modern Christian watered down Jesus. Lets put things in perspective before you go shooting off your mouth (words) about things you know nothing about.
