Romney Tells Megyn Kelly He‘s ’Not Going to Apologize’ for Being Wealthy

Mitt Romney sat down with Megyn Kelly Wednesday afternoon and had some strong words for the Fox News host. When pressed on questions that his wealth makes him out of touch with Americans, Romney refuted Kelly with a touch of irritation.
“Megyn, guess what, I made a lot of money. I’ve been very successful. I’m not going to apologize for that. I know the DNC tries to push this out and they get it on the mainstream media networks and that’s where you guys see it and everybody laughs about it. Because, in this country, we want someone who can help other people become successful.”
(Related: Romney namedrops owners of NFL teams as friends)
Mediaite caught the interview on video:
These passages sum up a few other highlights according to Mediaite:
He later added that rival candidate Rick Santorum is a “nice guy,” but ultimately an “economic lightweight” as a candidate and one who isn’t as fiscally conservative he is, despite Santorum’s recent comments taking umbrage at being characterized as “moderate.”
When told of Gingrich’s recent comments about staying in the race to make sure Romney doesn’t receive the delegate count he needs to seal the nomination, Romney responded that he “sure hoped those comments that you described aren’t accurate,” and that he also hopes Gingrich is focused on what’s best for the country and not, rather, on playing these sort of political games. “Replacing the President has got to be our priority,” said Romney, “not stopping one candidate or another. This is a bigger matter than replacing one person with another. It’s about saving the soul of America.”[...]
After showing Romney a clip from a 2008 ABC News debate in which the GOP contender said he “like(s) mandates,” Romney clarified that he is not in favor of any kind of national program, but agrees with mandates decided on a state-by-state level.

We need to be putting our message out about Obama now not in July or August. The people who voted for him all they need is the truth because they are just brainwashed by the media now we need to get our message out in ads and have our candadate debate him as soon as possible.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 8:50pm@West Coast your still talking about Ron Paul who can’t win one state. Votes of the people matter too not just the delagates and I doubt he will get the delagates to back an anti Israel policy of ignoring Iran and claiming them to be no threat. Of course militarily they do not compare to us but that is not how the new age attacks on the Us or abroud are they are day in day out single strikes by a couple people that kill 20 30 or 50 people. Do you want that as an every day basis coming through our border in Mexico where it is proven that Hezbolla and hamas have influence with the drug cartels and there has been car bombs going off in Jaurezz but that was all made up by the media that brought us the Iraq war of course you are going to say.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 9:59pmn8isgrate, actually the Solyndra loan was filed during the Bush administration. That‘s was Bush’s idea. Whatever. If you want to say the present administration followed through with it, that’s fine. GM and it’s suppliers did pretty well though. Instead of the entire automobile industry collapsing, as well as all their US suppliers, they are doing pretty well now aren’t they?
Come on. The bank bailouts (TARP) happened during the Bush administration. Let’s get that straight to start.
And had the banks failed, and all those businesses that have their cash in the banks were unable to get that cash (to buy things for their business, like the materials they need to make their products), that would have been a problem for the economy. A big problem. And had the automobile industry failed, and businesses that sell to the automobile industry subsequently failed that also would have been a big problem given that the automobile industry is a large part of America’s economy.
The stimulus worked, and you can thank Bush, Republicans and Democrats for that.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 9:34amPeople wonder why Romney doesn’t do many media interviews. When Fox News’, supposed Right Wing media, CEO is tweeting his shill support for Santorum, giving Santorum and Gingrich as much time and softball interviews as they please (along with not challenging them on their lies) and Romney comes in and gets attacked on one of his best Conservative Republican points – he is successful in business – it is no wonder he does not appear on Fox all that much. He did do a great job here, though.
Yes, Romney has a clear path to the nomination. Is it going to be easy? Romney never thought it was going to be. He continually stated this would not be wrapped up early. He held that belief as early as last summer. But he is winning the delegates. He only needs to win 35-45% of the delegates from here on out, and he is at 55% on average so far. Santorum must win 65% of the delegates from here on out, and he at 25% on average so far.
Romney, in 2008, when he knew it was mathematically improbable for him to gain the nomination, he did the classy thing – he dropped out and raised $20 million for his opponent. He could have fought on to the Convention, but he didn’t. It is time for Gingrich and Santorum to finally do something classy.

Romney is a very humble guy. Which is the problem with his appearance as being out of touch. He doesn’t talk about his down-to-earth accomplishments, his personal relationships with the so-called common folk. But the stories are out there. He has rolled up his sleeves to help victims of fires, floods, snow, and storms. Not the petty words and encouragement of others to take action; no, he has picked up the chainsaw to cut away trees, cleaned the yards of others, and has done this without the news cameras around.
Romney is FAR FROM being elitist. Being in the position he is in has given him an ability to make necessary contacts to get things done, but that does not make one elitist. If so, then we are all elitists in one way or another… do you have a job? ELITIST!

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 7:32pmThere is an elephant in the room, and you can talk about the money he has had to spend, the fact that he is a Yankee, or that he is a flip flopper, but don’t forget the elephant. The real reason Romney has to spend what he spends is because he is Mormon. An overwhelmingly large number of voters in the South and especially those entrenched in the Bible belt have a knee jerk antagonism for Romney’s faith. Every opponent to Romney has realized short term and intermittent bursts of popularity because they are not Romney. And more to the point, because they are not Mormon. For most people I do not see the health care mandate being the issue in this election. The issue is the economy.
Santorum and Gingrich are legislators, and the only tools in their tool boxs for making repairs to this country are legislative in nature. They will push for new laws to supercede, replace or push aside the old. They will not chase after repeals because repeals take a super majority vote in each house and is dang near statistically impossible. Santorum and Gingrich have never created wealth. Gingrich may receive credit for helping to reduce government consumption and greed for Americans’ hard earned money, which in turn certainly contributed to economic expansion, but that is not the same as actually doing it yourself. Santorum spent money like it was plentiful during his term in office. They are ill equipped, but at least they are not Mormon. Pathetic reality.

Anyone who uses terms that Beck, Hannity, and Rush have coined in their posts can’t be taken seriously. You know they are addicted to conservative radio, and can barely form an idea of their own. In fact, Rush’s fans call themselves “dittoheads.”
Even if you legitimately agree with these people, have studied and thought out the issues on your own, try to use your own words. It’s far more effective than repeating the thoughts of others. This is why the liberal media mocks conservatives. If conservatives can’t intelligently communicate and clearly explain their positions without just repeating and adopting language that conservative talk show pundits use – they will never make an impact on the public discourse.

@ Magsdad,
I think Romney is a career problem solver. I think he sees specific problems and he enjoys the thrill of chasing down the solutions. He will cut, slash, cap, and balance our Government just as he has done in every other aspect of his life. Romney eats, sleeps, and breathes solutions to fiscal problems. I think the minor details of our politcal discussion regarding problems that Presidents cannot solve such as Abortion, Contraception, Gay Marriage and the like are simply not on his radar screen.
Even Romneycare, was in fact a “solution” to the specific problem of Free loaders and their drain on the Medical system and the state of Massachusetts. He belives that states are better equipped to solve their own problems and feels that a lion’s share of those responsibilities need to be delegated to the states with the faith that each state has a better chance of coming up with the best solution to their own problems, than a single power source in the District of Columbia.

Now, here is where you are wrong. You have it turned around. Romney has more international and diplomatic experience than all of the candidates combined in both parties. Remember the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics? That is an international event that directly coordinates with leaders and officials from around the world.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Until you can give me hard evidence that Santorum and Gingrich have the experience you say they do, your statement is just conjecture.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:18pmBottom line, ultimately, Obama must be replaced by any means necessary, be it Santorum or Romney.
But Gingrich’s time is clearly up. Stop supporting that spiteful ogre with your votes. We have to be ready to end this thing before it‘s too late and he’s clearly not helping…

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:16pmRomney was never my first choice; I’m frankly sick of seeing interviews with any and all of the candidates. None are exciting, none have clear strong visions of changing our present situation…But, they are infinitely better than ‘that one’ in the White House. ‘That one’ is clearly against the will of America. The 4 men running on the GOP side are not against the will of America. They aren’t socialist in nature, they are not for redistributing the personal wealth of those who have made it; and they certainly have worked, led, or gave time to the American military. ‘That one’ has done none of these things. ‘That one’ thinks he has led, but that’s the fantasy he has created within his own imagination. I applaud MItt for being wealthy, I applaud Ron for serving in the military, I applaud Newt for his speakership, and I applaud Rick for his service in the Senate. None of the 4 are perfect; but none of them are Obama and that’s why I will vote GOP.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 7:17pmI liked Ike. But he wasn’t available.
My first choice was Cain, but we found out he likes women.
I liked Bachman, but she didn’t check snopes before making statements.
Then Newt sounded good, until I really listened to him.
I liked Romney for his economics and buisness sense, until I figured out he was really a RINO.
Paul made some good points, then started making crazy points.
Then there is Santorum………….still waiting.
Can I still vote for Ike?

I WANT A RICH GUY RUNNING THE COUNTRY!!!
People, we are hiring someone to do what needs to be done to allow the economy to recover. How can someone know how to do that unless he knows how money is made (and has actually done it)??
To hire (elect) someone who doesn‘t know how to make money is like hiring a financial planner who’s broke himself!

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:21pmWe need someone who understands that the economy is merely a symptom of the real problem. Fix the source problem and the economy will get better along with the other symptoms. I don’t believe Romney understands that.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:35pm@SOYBOMB315 – To answer your question – no, I‘m not a Romney supporter simply because he’s “mormon”; just like I would never vote for Harry Reid even though he’s a “mormon.”
@QP Willie – You and I agree that the economy is merely the symptom of the real problem. That is why I was careful not to say that Romney could fix the economy – but rather I said that he could “allow the economy to recover.” As you obviously know, this is an important distinction since we are conservatives and believe its the American PEOPLE not the American government that can fix the economy… the President simply needs to keep the government out of the way.
I guess we simply disagree on whether or not Romney will do that. I believe that since he was a big business CEO, he understands how all the regulation and taxes stifle true growth and efficient business. The other candidates are career politicians and made their fortunes creating regulation and taxes.

Romney thinks 0bama is just a nice fellow who doesn‘t know what he’s doing. He has said so. Anybody who thinks that doesn’t understand what the real problem is.

I want to punch him every time he bats his eyes like a little girl being asked out on her first date, then bashfully closes his eyes and turns red. Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:03pmPerhaps she has a point. I have not seen the clip however I would be surprised if she suggested an apology for his being wealthy. I have done well and poorly over the past decades. When things were going well it certainly was easy to forget about how awful life could feel when I worried about my becoming homeless, penny-less. I could express compassion for those less fortunate but I was emotionally distant from being terrified about my future. We now find millions of Americans that are terrified 24/7 about their future, loss of all hope. And many of these people have skills and willingness to work. The work is simply not there. Does Romney or any candidate really get this?
The current idiot in the drivers seat does not.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:00pmOh what a terrible thing success is to liberals (except when they’re successful themselves..then it’s ok). I agree with Romney…he should never have to apologise for his success. In a country like America it should be celebrated and encouraged. In Australia they have what’s called “the tall poppy syndrome”. Whenever one “poppy” grows too much taller than the others it’s cut off to make it “the same” as the others. Liberals would love to see that mindset take root here in the U.S. And Romney is dead right…the prize is the presidency and the ouster of Obama. Nothing else is acceptable.
Report Post »P8riot
Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:22pmAgreed. Romney’s wealth is only an issue to those who engage in class warfare. I don’t care is someone is rich or poor, black or white, I judge them by the content of their character and by their fruits. Romney may be rich, but the guy has raised some great kids (not hooked on drugs, educated, etc)! He has never cheated on his wife and obviously respects and loves her. This is the same guy who shut down his entire office and went with his staff to help a colleague find his missing daughter. If Romney is ‘out of touch’ with American then it‘s only because America must be ’out of touch’ with family values.
