Romney Routs Santorum in GOP Primary in Illinois

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (AP) — Front-runner Mitt Romney sailed to an easy victory in the Illinois primary Tuesday night, trumping Rick Santorum in yet another industrial state showdown and padding his already-formidable delegate lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

“What a night,” Romney told cheering supporters in suburban Chicago. Turning his attention past his GOP rivals, he said he had a simple message for President Barack Obama, the Democrat he hopes to face and defeat in November: “Enough. We’ve had enough.”

Mitt Romney Routs Rick Santorum in GOP Primary in IllinoisRomney triumphed after benefitting from a crushing advantage in the television advertising wars, and as his chief rival struggled to overcome self-imposed political wounds in the marathon race to pick an opponent to Obama.

Returns from 47 percent of the state’s precincts showed Romney gaining 50 percent of the vote compared to 33 percent for Santorum, 9 percent for Ron Paul and 7 percent for a fading Newt Gingrich.

Exit polls showed Romney preferred by primary goers who said the economy was the top issue in the campaign, and overwhelmingly favored by those who said an ability to defeat Obama was the quality they most wanted in a nominee.

The primary capped a week in which the two campaigns seemed to be moving in opposition directions — Romney increasingly focused on the general election battle against Obama while Santorum struggled to escape self-created controversies.

Most recently, he backpedaled after saying on Monday that the economy wasn’t the main issue of the campaign. “Occasionally you say some things where you wish you had a do-over,” he said later.

Over the weekend, he was humbled in the Puerto Rico primary after saying that to qualify for statehood the island commonwealth should adopt English as an official language.

While pre-primary polls taken several days ago in Illinois suggested a close race, Romney and Restore Our future, a super Pac that backs him, unleashed a barrage of campaign ads to erode Santorum’s standing. One ad accused the former Pennsylvania senator of changing his principles while serving in Congress, while two others criticized him for voting to raise the debt limit, raise his own pay as a lawmaker and side with former Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to support legislation allowing felons the right to vote.

In all, Romney and Restore Our Future outspent Santorum and a super PAC that backs him by $3.5 million to $500,000, an advantage of 7-1.

Romney’s victory was worth at least 13 delegates.

That gave him 535 in the overall count maintained by The Associated Press, out of 1,144 needed to win the nomination. Santorum has 253 delegates, Gingrich 135 and Paul 50.

In the long and grinding campaign, Santorum looked to rebound in next Saturday’s primary in Louisiana, particularly given Romney’s demonstrated difficulties winning in contests across the Deep South.

A 10-day break follows before Washington, D.C., Maryland and Wisconsin hold primaries on April 3.

Santorum is not on the ballot in the nation’s capital.

Private polling shows Romney with an advantage in Maryland, and Restore Our Future launched a television ad campaign in the state during the day at a cost of more than $450,000.

Wisconsin shapes up as the next big test between Romney and Santorum, an industrial state next door to Illinois, but one where Republican politics have been roiled recently by a controversy involving a recall battle against the governor and some GOP state senators who supported legislation that was bitterly opposed by labor unions.

Already, Restore Our future has put down more than $2 million in television advertising across Wisconsin. Santorum has spent about $50,000 to answer.

Neither Newt Gingrich nor Ron Paul campaigned extensively in Illinois.

Gingrich has faded into near-irrelevance in the race, but he was defiant in a statement issued after Romney sealed his victory.

“To defeat Barack Obama, Republicans can’t nominate a candidate who relies on outspending his opponents 7-1. Instead, we need a nominee who offers powerful solutions that hold the president accountable for his failures,” it said.

Gingrich said his campaign will spend the time leading to the party convention “relentlessly taking the fight to President Obama.”

Illinois fell into Romney’s column far more easily than Michigan or Ohio had.

The night’s vote count was plagued by ballot difficulties. Rupert Borgsmiller, executive director, of the Illinois State Board of Elections, said in late afternoon that 25 counties and the city of Aurora were affected by the ballot problem. He didn’t know how many ballots were affected but said “clearly you can say more than hundreds.”

Romney and Santorum campaigned energetically across the state, and not always in respectful tones.

“Senator Santorum has the same economic lightweight background the president has,” Romney said at one point. “We’re not going to replace an economic lightweight with another economic lightweight.”

Santorum had a tart reply. “If Mitt Romney’s an economic heavyweight, we’re in trouble.”

Anticipating a primary defeat, Santorum’s campaign argued that the race for delegates is closer than it appears.

Santorum contends the Republican National Committee at the convention will force Florida and Arizona to allocate their delegates on a proportional basis instead of winner-take-all as the state GOP decided. Romney won both states.

On Tuesday, about four in 10 voters interviewed as they left their polling places said they were evangelical or born again. That‘s about half the percentage in last week’s primary states of Alabama and Mississippi, where Santorum won narrowly. Despite an unusually lengthy race for the nomination, less than a third of those voting said in the polling-place survey they hoped the primary season would come to a quick end even if that meant their candidate might lose the nomination.

The findings came from preliminary results from the survey of 1,555 Illinois Republican voters, and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The exit poll was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research at 35 randomly selected polling places around the state.

As Illinois Republicans voted on Tuesday, Romney raised more than $1.3 million at a luncheon in Chicago.

Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, has been seeking to make up in broadcast interviews what he has lacked in advertising money.

On Monday, his campaign began before sun-up and ended well after dark, including four appearances at rallies around the state as well as an extraordinary 19 radio and television interviews. He accused Romney anew of putting his signature on a Massachusetts health insurance law that is similar to the one Obama pushed through Congress.

Romney cut short his planned time in Puerto Rico, site of a primary last weekend, to maximize his time in Illinois. He has eked out victories in other big industrial states over the past few weeks, beginning in Michigan on Feb. 28 and Ohio on March 6. Defeat in any would be likely to trigger fresh anxiety within the party about his ability to wrap up the nomination.

Illinois was the 28th state to hold a primary or caucus in the selection of delegates to the nominating convention, about halfway through the calendar of a Republican campaign that has remained competitive longer than most.

A change in party rules to reduce the number of winner-take-all primaries has accounted for the duration of the race. But so has Romney’s difficulty in securing the support of the most conservative of the GOP political base. Santorum and Gingrich have struggled to emerge as the front-runner’s sole challenger from the right.

Whatever the reasons, the race appeared unlikely to end soon, with Santorum and even Gingrich vowing to campaign into the convention.

i heard Mitt did not accept a paycheck while he was governor, his choice. that’s a good point, not crazy about him although. i really don’t think we need to focus on beating obummer, all of these guys can. obummer can only win with “hell’s angles” in front of every voting place, get his financial buddies to count the votes (creative accounting 101), nappy will call out the national guard, holder will finally be able to account for all the assault weapons that have been missing (now in the hands of the all important “Youth for America National Protection Agency” also known as YANPA, as hilarious rides into the Kremlin pulling a trojen horse, filled with VODKA to celebrate, and of course Bill is on top, riding again and we will all go blissfully into the sunset, singing “Someday my love, there will be songs to sing, although the snow covers the hope of Spring”. But then again WE WILL STAND.

I set here listening to the phone call of Santorum with Greta complaining of Romney’s strong support from his super-pac. He made a notation that people dont donate to his campaign to compete with Romney’s superpac, and these Supacs are running decptive ads of his and Gingrich’s records. Interesting how Santorum and Gingrich each claim the attacks are lies yet never defend their position with the actual facts. what was the lie and where is Santorums actual position?
Santorum is taking the lesson from Gingrich, if you scream foul long enough eventually a blind ref may blow the whistle. This ref has glasses and he can read and study facts.
Where are the superpac lies? Would someone please post a link of a Romney superpac lie?

      I’d appreciate it.

Good job GOP, you have decided to select a man just like Obama. Willard won’t even harshly criticize Obama and you expect him to be able to debate the man. On what health care, oh thats right Obama used Mitts version as a model. Maybe on the bankers and corrupt FED? Hardly when you compare both of their top 20 campaign donors. Two empty suits, what a pair they will make on the debate stage. They will both demand a teleprompter, they both will read from the same play book: Pander and sellout on any populist point (even if your past shows you don’t support such positions – hell it worked with Obama on the debt limit, Patriot Act, etc.). You are being used, its time to get rid of BOTH corrupt parties. So funny how Boehner and Pelosi were neck deep into insider trading, errr ‘soft corruption’ as what they did was technically not illegal. Keep paying your taxes peon, and believe in Romney’s Change 2.0!

Gotta love Romney, a character who many people will support just to beat Obama, and not because they actually like his populist-moderate stance. Drones think this is a game and if you win the election then its over. Sorry but he who is elected is president and has to RUN the country not just claim victory. Romeny has terrible ideas for this country and nothing will change that.

Most of them see the inevitability of Romney and hard as they try, they cannot get excited about him.

I remember when Gingrich was howling about one of the ads by Romney’s super pac: “It got 4 Pinochios!” Well, one of those Pinochios was for the “false” assertion that the housing collapse was responsible for the Great Recession. Seems to me that the housing bubble was clearly the biggest cause of the Great Recession, but statist news organizations (and Newt Gingrich) don’t like that fact, so they call it a lie.

However, given the fact that Newt as well as Mittens are members of the CFR, Bildeburg (Shadow Government) and probably other secret elitist organizations our best bet is Ron or Rick. Romney has been endorsed/anointed by Puppet Masters George H.W. and McCain which makes him Obama light. We won’t be fooled again!

While I’m no fan of Romney or Gingrich, I personally find Santorum to be the phoniest of the three. It may be because he declares himself the most conservative in the GOP race when in fact his voting record is the most liberal (and of course Ron Pauls is by far the most conservative). In addition to the voting record, there are numerous videos of Santorum saying things that no real conservative would ever say. Here’s one I saw for the first time today…..

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-WezrKqUBQ&feature=player_embedded

I also have a personal issue with the pandering “look at me, I’m the most Christian” attitude that Santorum has made his trademark.
I will only vote for a Christian, but I prefer my Christian candidate to be humble, and to never, ever use his (professed) faith for his own self-glorification and promotion.

I just find Santorum to be a fake conservative and, while I won’t call him a fake Christian, I will say that his form of Christianity is not very compatible with mine.

“How did it happen? How did our national government grow from a servant with sharply limited powers into a master with virtually unlimited power? In part, we were swindled. There are occasions when we have elevated men and political parties to power that promised to restore limited government and then proceeded, after their election, to expand the activities of government. But let us be honest with ourselves. Broken promises are not the major causes of our trouble. Kept promises are. All too often we have put men in office who have suggested spending a little more on this, a little more on that, who have proposed a new welfare program, who have thought of another variety of ‘security.’ We have taken the bait, preferring to put off to another day the recapture of freedom and the restoration of our constitutional system. We have gone the way of many a democratic society that has lost its freedom by persuading itself that if ‘the people’ rule, all is well.” – Barry Goldwater

Santorum doesn’t like Goldwaters form of conservatism. I’d take a Goldwater conservative over a Santorum conservative any day because a Santorum conservative is a neoconservative statist.

      Soybomb,

I did not see Santorums speech tonight, but I have to be honest with you, if Santorum seems to be moving towards Ron Paul, that would be the biggest flip-flop any politician ever attempted.

I personally would not believe him if he said anything of the sort. After all, his voting record has never matched his rhetoric. I’m sure you know that he voted for funding Planned Parenthood, he always voted for foreign aid, he always voted to raise the debt ceiling, he voted for doubling the Dept. of Education, etc. etc. etc.

I know that people can have their political eyes opened because I used to be a neoconservative and I now realize how incredibly wrong and gullible I was. But even if Santorum said that he has begun to study Bastiat, Hayek, Mises, and Thomas Jefferson and finally sees the wisdom of libertarianism, his history of saying one thing while doing another would make me very leery.

romney will win the social conservatives regardless. he has the best potential to build a coalition that can beat obama because he can appeal across many demographics. obama is a master campaigner and he will have the MSM on his side. the odds are stacked against us! we will not win the election if it’s just conservatives versus indepedents/liberals!

The differences between OBAMA CARE and So called Romney Care are staggering!! Get your common sense on!
I am voting for him because of Romney Care…not in spite of it. Because if every state had been pro-actively working to solve the very broken health care system and issues in their own states(As the constitution allows and even directs) if they had all been doing this then the FED would have no reason to even get involved. Let me be very clear here… I’m not for a mandate…but I am for the constitution and states rights. When Obama care is repealed… we will still have a very broken and expensive medical system… each state will then need to craft a solution. So far only one has attempted this in an effort to thwart the Fed…and that was under the leadership of Mitt Romney.

you are a strange fellow. did you catch the “IF” proviso? or did you read the second sentance?

anyways, you need to get familiar with the 14th ammendment and the ‘incorporation clause’. The constitution applies to the federal government as well as the states. For example, massechuesetts cannot outlaw free speech because it is protected by the bill of rights. If the supreme court declares the individual mandate unconstitutional – then it is unconstitutional at the state level too. some light must be going off in your head – dont ignore it.

it doesnt matter how many people in a state want something – if it is unconstittuional then it is not right. i am begining to think you are a democrat in disguise

Mitt Romney is like Obama? What are you smoking?
Mitt Romney is admittedly a bit awkward and a bit stiff… precisely because he is not some smooth talking experienced liar… I mean washington insider, lobbyist, historian, ear marker… and he is also NOT the establishment guy. He will not take a paycheck, he will not have sex with interns or lie, or do 121 fundraiser, or play 100 rounds of golf. BUT HE WILL cut waste, eliminate red tape, create confidence in the business sector… which will help to create jobs… and he will work to win wars…not just be in them. He will also work towards becoming energy independent. Oh and he won’t give himself a raise…or take vacations in separate jets. Well said! So many people refuse to lood at Mitt did and seem to focus on stupid stuff! When Mitt got the job in Mass. he found that over half the people were without health insurance which is why he instituted the law on healthcare for the state—their medicade bill has been costing them more then they were taking in in taxes. Everyone seems to blame Mitt for Obamacare as did I before I heard the reason for Mittcare!

I think a lot of people fell for his campaign strategy to act like a conservative but it never works out that way. If he miraculously got to the white house, he would immediately go right back to being what he has always been.

Who is calling who a moderate. The title doesn’t fit, no matter how often you repeat it. Romney care was not liberal or even moderate legislation, it was conservative from its inception, no matter what the dems in Mass have converted it to today, and last I checked turning deficits into surpluses, cutting taxes, and reducing the size of Government are hardly moderate principles.

Not only should you cast your vote for Romney in the general, you should do it with confidence knowing you made the right choice. If there is any moderate philosophy still lurking about in Mitt’s head, it will be rooted out while in office. He not only has a record for being successful financially, he has a proven record of defining the problem and executing its solution. He has a record of being right. Santorum and Gingrich can hardly toot the same horn. Good riddance.

      QP,

Romney is hedging his bets, as all intelligent businessmen do. He is not going to call Obama out on anything that we suspect regarding his motives, core beleifs, or ideologies. If he does the argument will bite him back and remove the conversation from the most important issue. Obama is a failure as President, and the Democrat Party is fiscally irresponsible, as they have gone 5 years now with no budget. Getting in the kind of digs that would make you happy would quickly get Romney labeled as a cook, racist, irrational, and border line lunatic (Kind of like what they have done to Santorum.) Romney doesn’t have to call Obama a socialist, but he can say that Obama’s policies are turning us into a pseudo European socialist state, and he has. If Romney is caught on tape, or in print, as having called Obama any of the names you have prepared for him, all the money in the world won‘t outweigh the negative press he’ll encounter. His strength is his reserve. And we only win if people don’t see him as emotional or unstable in his opinions. He is targeting the biggest problem and championing the best solutions. He will take the White House, and let Obama’s record evict the current occupant.

Rest assured, there were Democrats that voted for Romney to give Obama a better chance. Otherwise, they stayed home and I’m betting the polls show as much. It’s up to those on the right and Libertarians to prove their asses wrong.

I hate saying this, but, Santorum is done now. It’s certainly not mathematically possible to win out. With Texas left, should Romney wins out, and it’s possible he will, They should stop this damn process and start focusing on the real enemy, Obama.

Some of them have deep pockets and foreign connections, and some of them vote early and often. He also has millions of public sector Union employees. His disastrous policies have allowed these government parasites to feed on the American taxpayers more than at any other time in history, and they’re not willing to give that up. It is in their best interests to keep him in the White House. So don’t be complacent in thinking that his defeat in November is inevitable. On almost every thing I base my vote on, there is little, to no difference between bumster, and mittens. Better the devil I know, than the devil I don’t.

Unite behind whatever the GOP plops in front of you, bend over and kiss mittens… er… ya, not happening. A protest vote for the other side and I still have my honor, I sell out to someone I can’t support, only because that is who the GOP decided I should vote for, and I loose my honor. I am not that cheap, maybe you are. Further, I find the average GOP voter to be just as offensive as any OWS park-hippie. Neither of them will engage in a debate about their core issues without resorting to the same old party lines. There isn’t a unique individual thought in the whole lot of the. Frightening. They are going to line up and vote for whomever the party picks, reguardless of just how poorly that candidate reflects their beliefs (providing they actually have any true core beliefs)

The GOP wants to win, they need to pick a candidate that is different from the DNC. I don’t see any way mitties is going to change what appears to be the invertible direction of the country, it’s going to end up the same place with either of them. Going to be 2nd term of the bummer, and the GOP has only themselves to blame for it.

Actually he vetoed legislation against Abortion which turned him pro life also vetoed legislation on gay marriage cut taxes in a liberal state. Romneycare is not a put insurance companies out of business plan like Obamacare. The mandate you need to get your mind off of that it is the smallest issue of Obama care the biggest issues are the fact all insurance companies will be out of business because it will be too expensive for them to cover people so you will be forced into Obama care. The mandate is unconstitutional federally but that is not the main issue nor should be the main issue on Obamacare. Romney care was not about universal healthcare it was about closing a gap of people free loading and suing doctors when they didnt have there own coverage. It was actually praised by conservatives when it was inacted until the liberals took it over when Romney left.

He won’t loose because people like you and 408 will sooner vote for Obama, than Romney or Santorum.

Martinez the only one who consistantly does well against Obama in polls is Romney Santorum has only a couple times where he was close Romney overall has always done well against Obama. Gingrich is someone who has been behind 15 percent or more and Ron Paul the only way he would win is to take democrats because not very many republicans would vote for him he is more of a libertarian democrat then a conservative republican.

      @bpo

I will never vote for Obama or a clone of him(Romney, Santorum, or Gingrich)

      @n8

I cannot help that most of the GOP are sheep and are being told who to vote for. Yes those two poll well, but are they good candidates? No.

If the talking heads (Glenn, Bill, Sean, Rush, and Mark to name a few) all supported lets say Gingrich tommorrow. The Sheep would flock to Gingrich again.

Unlike the rest of the GOP candidates Ron Paul is the only one with appeal to the anti war, pro freedom, fiscal discipline. The GOP is pro taking freedoms (patriot act and Ndaa), pro war, and pro spending. They are no different from Obama. This is a lost cause, Obama wins in a land slide, again.

What do Ron Paul, Ross Perot, and Ralph Nader all have in common?

Still thinking? (Yeah, I can smell the wood burning….)

They were all LOSERS who had a small but vocal following right up to the day they LOST and disappeared. Wake up and smell the coffee!!!

WRONG. They all ran for president and prevented one of the parties from winning. That will be the result because of foolish people like you who go around and talk trash to folks you have no business bashing.

If the republican party denigrates ron paul or dismisses his ideas – he will find an audience that accepts them. That means 3rd party run – not my ideal goal but because of people like you, i wont shed a tear for your fearless candidate. You wrap yourself in the romney flag but you will soon realize that he stands on quicksand and doesnt have core principles that american people want
