Romney’s Low-Key Iowa Strategy Faces Test

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The accelerating GOP presidential campaigns in Iowa probably will define front-runner Mitt Romney’s chief challengers over the next six weeks and could force the former Massachusetts governor to reconsider his decision to mount only modest efforts in this early voting state.

Rep. Michele Bachmann’s quick rise in popularity in the leadoff caucus state and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s stubbornly low poll numbers after more than a year of groundwork in Iowa give Romney new opportunities in the state where he has worked to lower expectations in his second campaign.

Romney may stick with his plan to tread lightly in Iowa and look to New Hampshire’s leadoff primary for a liftoff in 2012 if there is no opening for him to seize as a consensus choice.

But Romney’s healthy fundraising, with as much as $20 million in the three-month reporting period that ended last week, and his lead in national polls give him flexibility his less-known rivals lack and make it possible for him to wait to see how the chips fall in Iowa this summer, and decide later whether to up his ante.

“I think it‘s awfully hard for me at this stage to predict where we’ll spend all our time and devote all our resources,” Romney told The Associated Press this past week. “But we’re focused on running our race, where we think best.”

Minnesota’s Bachmann was on her first sustained Iowa campaign trip this weekend. She’s coming off a successful stretch marked by a well-received national debate debut, a widely covered campaign kickoff in her native Iowa and a strong showing in The Des Moines Register’s poll. Bachmann nearly matched Romney, the No. 2 GOP caucus finisher four years ago, for the early Iowa lead in the survey.

Criticized for having little caucus campaign heft on her team, Bachmann has named as her deputy national campaign manager David Polyansky, who’s credited with bringing organizational and strategic weight to the 2008 campaign of caucus winner Mike Huckabee.

Bachmann has feet in Christian conservative and tea party camps, and will need to quickly organize within these groups. Polyansky, who helped Huckabee form relationships with Christian home-school advocates in Iowa, for instance, can help behind the scenes. Bachmann’s schedule had her headlining a tea party rally in Des Moines on Saturday.

But caucus support is more often sealed in person than in crowds at a rally or along a July Fourth parade route. Bachmann will have to meet privately with influential GOP activists, as she plans to begin this weekend. She’s also staffing a phone bank to drum up support for the Aug. 13 straw poll. “We can’t make enough personal appearances in 40 days to make that happen,” said Bachmann’s Iowa campaign chairman, Kent Sorenson.

Businessman Herman Cain, a tea party favorite, also will need strong support from this motivated but untested segment of the GOP electorate. Cain, third in the new Iowa poll, was the only other candidate in double digits, with 10 percent. But his campaign organization has suffered some key staffing departures in Iowa.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania has a foothold among social conservatives. He’s looking for a straw-poll breakthrough with help from a top aide to Romney’s 2008 campaign.

For Pawlenty, the task in Iowa is the opposite of Bachmann’s. He will spend 15 days in the state this month trying to show that the organization he has built there can generate enthusiasm.

Pawlenty has the largest Iowa campaign staff, has spent more than two dozen days in the state since November 2009 and is airing the campaign’s first television ads. He has a list of recognizable Republican supporters, from former statewide officeholders to up-and-coming figures. Yet he was the choice of only 6 percent in the Register’s poll.

After saying in January he needed to “win or do very well” in the caucuses, he recently has tried to lower expectations for the straw poll, despite hiring the consultant who helped Romney win the 2007 straw poll.

“As to the straw poll, I don’t know that we need to win it,” Pawlenty told a conservative radio host in Des Moines this past week. “I think we need to do well and show some progress.”

The pressure is on Pawlenty to assemble those pieces of the broad GOP coalition he has long said he can deliver, including social and business conservatives.

“Tim Pawlenty is coming up on a pretty serious EKG test in Iowa,” said Robert Haus, who ran the 2008 Iowa caucus campaign for former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee. “Is he going to ultimately materialize into the big challenger to Romney or not?”

Pawlenty’s lack of early momentum could open the door for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who could attract support from Iowans looking for a pro-business governor besides Romney. Perry, who’s also popular with social conservatives, is considering a White House run and plans a national day of prayer in Houston for Aug. 6, a week before the straw poll.

A top Perry adviser, Dave Carney, has made inquiries in Iowa about the timing and rules of the straw poll and caucuses, while Perry has raised his profile with key appearances and private meetings with influential Republicans.

Perry will claim the space in Iowa for a pro-business governor if Romney does not, said Doug Gross, a top Iowa backer of Romney’s 2008 campaign who tried to coax Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels into running.

“Unless Romney gets in and campaigns here, he will only go down, leaving an opportunity for a Perry,” Gross said.

Don’t worry……….Huckabee’s buddies from the last time that stirred up the Mormon issue……….and with the continuing help of The Blaze………….Michele will do well in Iowa. If the voters in Iowa are more interested in JOBS/ECONOMY than a candidate’s religion (and thereby showing RESPECT for the Constitution), perhaps Mitt will do well.

What I‘d love to see in Michele’s character (as well as anyone else) is a total pushback on ANY groups that would apply ANY KIND of religious test for POTUS. THAT would be a character trait I would be interested in seeing.

To say the very least, I find it extremely disturbing that “The Blaze” has yet again, left out Ron Paul in another article. Last time I checked, “The Blaze” was created by Glenn Beck. He claims to stand for the constitution and relentlessly states that we should defend it against the progressives/establishment. Yet, “The Blaze” is still attempting to sell us “candidates” like Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann, both of which are anything but champions of the constitution. The ONLY candidate that has shown time and time again all throughout the years that he stands firmly with the constitution is Ron Paul. I will no longer support “The Blaze,” nor will I continue to support Glenn Beck. All of my subscriptions have been canceled. I’m going to stand firmly with the constitution and support/defend Ron Paul.

Well said Blazingchance. I’m too am amazed at the way Glenn so passionately preaches the Constitution and the Founding Fathers and sound money etc. etc. (I think Glenn even considers himself Libertarian) and yet the ONLY candidate who matches up with those issues perfectly is Ron Paul and Glenn refuses to endorse him. I don’t know why. I think it must be because Ron paul rightly believes we should have a foreign policy of non-intervention and no entangling alliances (just like the Founding Fathers) and that includes Israel. Glenn seems to believe that if the US is not in the middle east, that Israel would be annihilated by the arab countries. I believe that Israel has the strongest military in the entire middle east by far and can defend herself and that the US presence in the middle east only causes problems. I think in truth we are only there to protect “our” oil interests.

Come to think of it, that‘s the sort of pattern that I’m starting to pick up. It seems that every single day I see articles featuring Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry…And yet, the Blaze posted no article featuring Ron Paul. As much as I adimire Glenn Beck, I have to question if he really is libertarian as he claims himself to be.

I might vote for Cain or Palin if she gets in but as a teaparty member I can’t vote for Bachmann! Michele Bachmann is a million dollar welfare queen. This woman is a player and you can spot them a mile away. She knows how to play the game after all she’s been in the halls of congress for 5 years. Bachmann doesn’t like taxes, but she worked as an attorney for the IRS.,She doesn‘t like government entitlements yet her husband’s clinic has recieved hundreds of thousands from Medicare. What a hypocrite! She and her husband have been gaming government programs from foster child care, to grants, to Medicaid. Not only is the Medicaid an annual, ongoing source of income for them, she lied about the grant. She said the grant was for employees not the clinic, but with further investigation it’s been learned that the clinic was given these funds with no knowledge of how the money was spent. A family farm in Wisconsin, in which Bachmann is a partner, got nearly $260,000 in federal subsidies. She also knows how to get the sympothy vote by talking about her miscarriage she had 20 years ago in which some people say adds to her resume for President. This woman has never passed any legislation of any meaning. She has been called undisciplined, unorganized, and inept by those who have worked for her in the past years. She was also photographed hiding in bushes at a gay rally and said she was held against her will in a bathroom by a couple lesbian women. Bachmann changed her story about

Where the h*ll is Ron Paul in this article? He is pushing double-digits in polling. He just raised another 4.5 million. Give me a friggin break! If you can‘t see the media bias even inside the supposed ’libertarian-conservative’ circles and tea party circles, heres your sign! Those of you who have already sided against Paul realize that you are being manipulated by the media with false arguments. Do some more research for yourself, our country needs the man who is closer to a Reagan than any real candidate, who was a friend of Reagan, who was even endorsed by Reagan in 1978 for congress. Ron Paul and Ronald Reagan both believed in Barry Goldwater conservatism-libertarianism. “Libertarianism is the Heart and Soul of Conservatism” – Ronald Reagan

Romney has stated, time and again, how conservative he is on the issues that matters to Republican primary voters. He’s pro-life, supports the NRA, despises Obama, against Obama’s Health Care legislation, and strongly favors taxcuts to the wealthy, like the other candidates! His problem is that the GOP has a highly rigid litmus test that candidates have to adhere to!!!! Ronald Reagan and Bob Dole, along with Barry Goldwater, would never pass this ridiculous litmus test. The GOP has been shanghaied by the most extremist of people now and thats the reason Obama will be reelected!!!! Poor Poor Romney-he will never be able to convince the voters in the primaries, that he is one of them! As a strong progressive, perhaps even a Socialist, I love watching these Republican extremists running for President, continue to state some of the most outlandish crap-its going to be even more entertaining, whoever wins the GOP nomination, how they are going to explain themselves to the general electorate, the lunatic comments they made during the primary season!!!!

Once again another story that mentions all of the leading candidates except Ron Paul.

Dr. Paul has probably won more straw polls among conservatives than any other candidate (including recently Ames Iowa, Townhall, CPAC the past two years, Republican Leadership Conference, to name a few) and yet he is continually marginalized or ignored completely by neocons in the so-called conservative media (which includes Fox News and The Blaze).

The fact is that Ron Paul is the one true conservative in this race. That is if you consider conservativism to be an ideology of individual liberty, private property rights, personal responsibility, and sound money in accordance to the principles of the Founding Fathers and the strict adherence to the Constitution.

If your idea of conservatism is spreading our military empire to every corner of the planet and wiping out anyone who disagrees with you and being willing to spend any amount of (fiat) money and violating the Constitution to do it, then any one of the other candidates will do.

ROMNEY, AS ALL OTHER CANDIDATES, WILL BE A GREAT COMPETITOR OF OBAMA

Romney’s strengths are well know. He is the strongest in the economic realm with the most experience, not just owning a business but fixing businesses and the Olympics, best known for Dominoes, Staples, Sealy Mattresses, etc. Herman Cain is also strong on this account.

Romney has the most experience with health care as long as he is truthful about repealing ObamaCare. And according to Heritage Foundation, his plan, which the 85% liberal congress destroyed was the most market based health care plan of its time and though it had the mandate, again which the Congress put in, has been successful to 63% of the residents of Mass., which was reported by the Boston Globe.

He is also centered in good principles. He is pro-life. He didn’t sign the SBA pledge because of the consequences it would have on governing, according to the Susan B Anthony Group they were in discussions about this and they would not change the pledge to address Herman Cain and Romney’s concerns, so both of them wrote their own: http://tiny.cc/zn8dl .

Romney’s weakness is miscommunications or flip-flops. The only real flip-flop is about abortion. He was pro-choice in 1994 when he ran against Sen. Kennedy for Senate. Between the run for Senator and Governor he claimed to have an experience that made him question that position. When he ran for Governor he stated that he would not vote for or against two issues abortion and gay marriage. While governor he voted against the morning after pill and funding abortions. While governor he fought against gay marriage and wrote an op-ed in the WSJ that said the marriage should only be between a man and a woman. This sounds like Mitch Daniels stance on social issues

Climate Change, Romney never said he believed in Man-Made Global Warming. If anything be mad that he gave a soft answer like all politicians, but he did not flip flop on this issue he has been giving this same answer since governor. Here are the questions that proves he never said he believes in man-made global warming:

      1) Is the temperatures around the earth rising at this time. As far as we know YES. – He agreed with this.

      2) Has it gotten colder and hotter in the history before, is it cyclical? YES – He agrees, he said it has been hotter.

      3) Does man’s actions effect the environment? I am not asking how much, does it? YES – He agreed with this.

      4) Is man the cause of Global Warming? NO – Romney did not say that it did he said it contributed and that he does not know how much.

      Smoknhotpatriot,
My story sounds a lot like yours. I’ve been voting republican since I was eighteen years old because I thought theirs was the more conservative, Christian position. After the last presidential election when I plugged my nose and voted for John McCain (I should say against Obama) I started researching Ron Paul because even though my information sources (Glenn, Rush, Hannity, etc.) said he was a nut and was un-electable, he said a lot of things that made a lot of sense. Since then I’ve read numerous books on our history, the Founding Fathers, our monetary system and Austrian Economics vs Keynesian, republican form of government, and the Constitution. I realized that there is no real difference between most Democratic and Republican politicians. They use different rhetoric, but they are all business as usual, status quo, puppets. If you want to read a real eye opener on the Federal Reserve cartel, I recommend “The Creature from Jekyll Island” by G. Edward Griffin. It’s a long book but it is so fascinating (and infuriating) you will breeze through it and you will have a new understanding of the corrupt monetary system that is ruining this country. I also recommend checking out Michael Badnarick on youtube. He’s a Constitutional scholar worth listening to. By the way both of these men endorse Ron Paul for President, and for good reason.
