Ron Paul and Rep. McCotter Confront Bernanke on Inflation, Monetary Policy

Stocks reacted poorly after Ben Bernanke, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, was pushed by members of Congress, including Ron Paul (R-TX) and Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI), to explain current federal monetary policy

“In terms of the credit still not getting to potential borrowers,” Rep. McCotter said in reference to Bernanke’s testimony and written remarks, “what, specifically, do you think the reason for that is? And what do you think could specifically be done about it (if not by you)?”

Rep. McCotter continued:

Just a question about how this operates…it says here on page 6, “the target range for the federal funds rate remains at zero to a quarter percent.” Now, when that type of rate remains in effect, does that have an effect on the personal savings interest rates that individuals who bank get and, if that is the case and that, somehow that, let’s say, stopped them from getting a higher rate of return, would that not constitute them essentially subsidizing the operations to try to get money to, say, the banks or to other people who are still not giving the credit?

“Well,” Bernanke responded, “on the latter point, we are certainly paying attention to the effects of low interest rates, not only on savers, but on other financial institutions and the like.”

Bernanke continued:

The banks complain about the low interest rates. They say that that reduces their net interest margin so it’s not a “profitable” thing from their perspective. I would say from the point of view of savers though, for most savers, I think (on average) something less than 10 percent of all savings by retirees is in the form of fixed interest instruments like CDs.

Remember, people also own equities, they own money market funds, they own mutual funds, they have 401ks, and a variety of things. And those assets are assets whose returns depends very much on how strong the economy is.  And so, in trying to strengthen the economy, we are actually helping savers by making the returns higher as we can see as its happening in the stock market for example.

Watch Rep.Thaddeus McCotter question Bernanke on how monetary policy has affected inflation, saving, the health of the economy, and the stock market:

The Dow, which had been up by as many as 51 points, reversed course as Bernanke started speaking. It turned negative within the hour. The current market losses are broad, with nine of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 losing ground. Materials and energy stocks had the sharpest declines, while consumer products and financial companies were nearly flat.

The price of gold was virtually unchanged until 10 a.m., just as Bernanke started speaking, then fell more than $70 an ounce. It recovered some of its losses and was down about $50 an ounce at $1,738.

Rep. Ron Paul, who has long been a vocal opponent of the Fed’s monetary policy, questioned Bernanke on the dangers involved with printing more money, namely, inflation.

“In January, at one of your press conferences, you sort of poked a little bit of fun at people to downplay the ‘two percent’ inflation rate,” Rep. Paul said to Bernanke.

“But if you say it’s two and I say it’s nine, let’s compromise for the sake of argument that it’s five percent. Then you said that ‘it doesn’t hurt you unless you’re one of those people who stick their money in the mattress.’ But where are you going to put it?” Rep. Paul asked.

“Are you going to put it in a CD and not make any money at all? This doesn’t make any sense. It doesn’t encourage any savings and it just discourages people,” he added.

Watch Rep. Paul explain to Bernanke his take on the real inflation rate and price increases (via Business Insider):

“Gas prices will add to inflation,” Bernanke said, “while unemployment is falling faster than expected.”

Bernanke went on to say that the job market is still “far from normal” and that more stimulus measures may be needed, according to a recent CNBC report. However, given the rest of Bernanke’s testimony, many analysts believe further economic stimulus by the government is unlikely.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

With 16 trillion in federal debt if the interest rates were to increase to historical levels the largest line item on the federal books will be interest. As it stands today the rates on ten year treasuries is a couple ticks under 2%. If that were to increase to 6% the government would have to chose between Social Security or debt service. Then who would be pushing grandma off the cliff?

And Bernanke is talking about more stimulus. Creating more money during a time of wage contraction, with inflation in some sectors and deflation in others? The fuse has been burning for some time and nobody knows how to snuff it out or how long it is going to take for the powder to blow.

Let’s be truthful here. Grandma pusher herself off a cliff when she either sat back and let the members of Congress incur debt upon her behalf, guarantee her a retirement and medical care on said debt, and sold the next generation down the river by saddling them with her debt; or she voted for and is complicit in all of these things. Any person who by now does not understand that the soc. sec. trust fund is entirely made up of gov‘t IOU’s called bonds which must be repaid by the current and future taxpayer because the same people who contributed to the account received the benefit of its expenditure on welfare programs and bridges to nowhere, is a fool. Old people who didn‘t see this coming a mile away should not be held up on a pedestal by our gov’t at the expense of the rest of us. It is damn frustrating being a member of a generation that sees what is coming and will have to weather the storm while our grandparents are living out their days taking vacations and living in a home bought and paid for on the back of my generation and my parent’s generation. If they had earned and saved that money themselves, I would have no problem with their lifestyle, but they didn’t.

Ron Paul Confronts Bernanke: “Do You Buy Your Own Groceries?” The Congressman then pulled out a silver eagle, explaining that it has retained it’s real worth and that hard assets should be used as currency as outlined in the Constitution.
Telling Bernanke that in 2006, when he took over at the Fed, an ounce of silver bought about 4 gallons of gas, where as today it will buy 11 gallons. “That’s preservation of value,” said Paul.

And then him and Pat have the nerve to get up and say that the Republicans should shut Paul up because he might cost Romney or Santorum the election since his followers will never vote for those progressive liars.

None of the 3 other candidates are cutting the budget except Paul! Nobody except (very recently) Gingrich is talking about pulling power from the FED.

It makes no sense. But all these Blaze idiots WILL eventally understand that this is the only way to go when the system collapses. Trust me they WILL REGRET NOT ELECTING a sound money conservative!!!!

Don’t worry. THE PARTY has a plan for dealing with all of this debt…

First they run up so much debt that you would have to enact 90% income tax in order to pay for the debt.

Then they convince the people that they can just seize the property of the rich instead.

Then they drag 25 million people out into the street and shoot them if they disagree.

Then they seize all the private property from everyone.

And that’s how communism has been born many times around the world. It’s no big secret.

The Glass–Steagall Act of 1933 was developed to stop the likelyhood of a devistating crash like that in 1929. It seperated banks – securities and insurance companies. All three are big – but when you combine the three it makes for companies that are “TOO BIG TO FAIL” — It was working well until Billy Bob Clinton decided to do away with it by signing the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act. (Unfortunately brought to you by a group of Republicans) –

Now ask yourself – - WHY would they allow banks to get to a point where they were too big to fail?

    Greed.

RUK. Yeah tell me about it….

For a conservative, there can never be a libertarian option because the conservative understands the social contract. He learned this in fourth grade when he figured out his obnoxious behavior annoys others, and if he shoots off his mouth, he might get beaten up.

The conservative understands the relationship between rights and responsibility, liberty and license. He recognizes that individual behavior is not always a private matter. Sometimes it’s between you and society, you and your neighbor, you and the vulnerable. Sometimes your behavior is, in fact, somebody else’s business.

The conservative understands that laws have the power to order behavior and encourage civilized society. The libertarian loses sleep, believing that legal restrictions and social norms exist just to oppress him. He could not be more wrong. No one is thinking of him at all.

With all the libertarian emphasis on personal liberty, there is remarkably little attention paid to personal obligation. In fact, the notion of obligation itself is almost anathema: No one should be forced to do anything.

Ron Paul’s repeated characterizations of our most recent wars were “illegal.” These statements are a personal affront to every Veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

After all, if the wars were truly illegal, it would follow that our Veterans who prosecuted them must be criminals because American Soldiers are duty bound under the military’s Uniform Code of Military Justice to refuse to carry out any illegal order. Moreover, not only would the aiding of the prosecution of an “illegal war” itself be illegal, it would be a clear violation of the solemn oath taken by every Military Service Member. That oath requires them to uphold the constitution and to follow lawful orders. Engaging in illegal wars would violate both precepts. So, Paul implies that every Veteran, because of their Service in the wars, has violated the law and broken their word of honor.

First, Ron Paul supporters do believe in a social contract, the Constitution. Drugs, prostitution, pornography, and abortion should be regulated at the State level per the 10th Amendment. Second, one man‘s social contract is another man’s tyranny. Would you like to take part in the social contract of the Islamic Republic of Iran? Their government legislates the morality of drugs, prostitution, pornography, adultery, premarital sex and other social issues quite effectively.

Actually, as a conservative, I am more embarrassed we have people such as yourself in this party. The intellectual bankruptcy of your positions is astounding. Someone comes along and DARES to suggest that drug enforcement isn’t the per-view of our federal government, and you have a conniption. You are the problem with this party, Ron Paul has a different opinion then you! Better mount your high horse and blanket condemn all his supporters as drug users! You have no concept of liberty, federalism, or common decency… Nor do you realize that objecting to big government in some areas, but supporting in others, is just license for big government to grow everywhere(see the last 100 years) Either way, you will wake up one day and realize your stupidity, but whether its before or after the dollar explodes, will make all the difference. Intellectual purity matters, but sadly the concept of Liberty has long been removed from the mind of the modern American “conservative”.

      @TIMETOEND
You still have not provided a clip of Ron Paul insulting the troops, there are several of him insulting the Presidents who started illegal wars none I’ve seen on the troops?

“Remember… I said… self-respecting” — Correct, you do not know any of these as you are self-serving for your interests.

“Ron Paul’s repeated characterizations of our most recent wars were “illegal.” These statements are a personal affront to every Veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.” — Wrong these statements are of Constitutional fact and are a personal affront to every PRESIDENT who has taken us to them. Us troops are required to obey orders given. Your interpretation is just that an interpretation which means opinion.

“So, Paul implies that every Veteran, because of their Service in the wars, has violated the law and broken their word of honor.” — again Implies is your interpretation not fact, you want to argue opinions good luck with that. However, the Constitution specifically states the process to go to war, that process has not been followed since WWII, that is not an interpretation, that is FACT.

Back in May, Congressman John Mica (R-Fl) offered an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012. Here is the amendment Paul groupies.

H.Amdt. 318: An amendment numbered 38 printed in House Report 112-88 to require that the rules of engagement allow any military service personnel assigned to duty in a designated hostile fire area to have rules of engagement that fully protects their right to proactively defend themselves from hostile actions.amending H.R. 1540: National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012.

The amendment passed 260 to 160 and for that as Retired Army… I was very pleased. But what I have been trying to understand is how anyone, be they liberal or progressive or moderate or conservative, Republican, Democrat or Libertarian could vote against this amendment. What moral grounds could they possibly have? The liberals and progressives I understand because IMO they have no moral values. But, eighteen Republicans voted against this amendment and one of them wants to be our President… Ron Paul.

Yesiree… that’s what I call supporting the troops Ron Paul.

“Yesiree… that’s what I call supporting the troops Ron Paul.”

FINALLY, WE AGREE, you see know when the troops come home and are in anyway knowingly or not “assumerd” to be associated with any hostile forces, they can be arrested indefinitely without trial against the Constitution, in which that National Defense Authorization Act says, and Paul voted against the amendments and voted against the bill, to SUPPORT THE TROOPS RIGHTS TO A 6th AMENDMENT GIVEN BY THE CONSTITUTION.

You see, using your logic, if Congress where to pass a bill to strip every citizen of their God given rights, you would say that’s ok as long as their is an amendment in their for a certain item. Ron Paul says if I”m voting against an unconstitutional bill, NO amendment can butter it up enough to support it, It’s STILL UNCONSTITUTIONAL!.

I’m sure there are “amendments” in the healthcare bill you may like, is the whole bill good because of them?

This should give us all a good idea of just how much Ron Paul values the military.

After the conclusion of the Iowa caucus, U.S. Army Reserve Corporal Jesse Thorton (tattoo neck for Paul), while in uniform, appears on stage in front of the nation to endorse Ron Paul publically. In 30 seconds, he pretty much ended a 5 year military career.

That was in itself, a monumentally stupid decision. Active/Reserve/Guard Military members are NOT allowed to participate in rallies, give speeches, or endorse any candidate while in uniform. Ron Paul, a former Air Force Officer himself, KNOWS this because he has made his Military Service a big part of his campaign.

And yet, Ron Paul let it happen. He smugly stood up there next to this kid, knowing full well that this kid was violating the UCMJ and yet he let him do it, each word of praise making for more intriguing testimony at the Corporal’s upcoming courts-martial.

Ron Paul committed the gravest of sins in the military… he hung a Military ‘brother’ out to dry for a campaign endorsement. He profitted off of this young man’s lapse in judgement and poor decision making skills.

Way to go CPT Paul…. way to go.

Every vote, every bill Ron signs, votes for has to do with liberty, or returning states rights (from the federal government). If something in a bill is not paid for…it gets voted against. If it is un-Constitutional…it gets voted against. Very simple.

The Treasury Secretary operates at the pleasure of the President. I can not see any of the three other candidates asking Ron Paul to be Treasury Secretary as they believe in the status quo of our monetary policy. They also know that he would be on their heels about the federal debt, another issue the others do not have a plan to address. Until these two issues are solved our country will continue to operate with fiat money to the benefit of the TBTF, wall street big wigs, the welfare and warfare state and not to the middle class. Period.

Romney’s budget increases spending and debt.
Romney’s foreign affairs policy is a continuation of Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Obama’s polices.
Romney’s supports bills like the patriot act and NDAA.

To sum it up, Romney is a clone of Obama. Santorum is a clone policy wise of Romney. Gingrich is a clone policy wise of all of them.

The real issues our country faces..
