Ron Paul Calls TSA ‘Jack-Booted Thugs’ in Response to Highway Checkpoints

A week ago, Tennessee became the first state to team up with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration to implement highway checkpoints for random searches in a move to counter terrorism.
Ron Paul’s response? That the Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) program with its “sinister, military-style acronym“ is violating Fourth Amendment rights with random highway checkpoints by ”jack-booted thugs.” He writes on his website:
So first we are told by the U.S. Supreme Court that American citizens have no 4th amendment protections at border crossings, even when standing on U.S. soil. Now TSA takes the next logical step and simply detains and searches U.S. citizens at wholly internal checkpoints.
[...]
The real tragedy occurs when Americans incrementally become accustomed to this treatment on the roads just as they have become accustomed to it in the airports. We already accept arriving at the airport 2 or more hours before a flight to get through security; will we soon have to build in an extra 2 or 3 hours into our road trips to allow for checkpoint traffic?
Listen to more of Ron Paul’s take on the TSA highway checkpoints in a video he released on Monday:
VIPR was created in 2005 in response to the 2004 Madrid bombings to increase security at rail and mass transit systems in the United States. By 2007, VIPR had “augmented security” at transportation facilities in cities like New York, Buffalo, Los Angeles and Boston.
So why has VIPR moved to Tennessee highways? Channel 5 reports Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons as saying ”Where is a terrorist more apt to be found? Not these days on an airplane more likely on the interstate.”
The Examiner goes as far as to liken the checkpoints to “those used in Nazi Germany.” The report also states that these checkpoints were not established based on any specific threat.

Please come to your senses fellow Conservatives. They only reason that you oppose Dr. Paul is because of the common sense approach he takes on the Middle East even though the facts are on his side you still fail to acknowledge it. How much more money can a broke Nation poor down the hole in the Middle East? Why do you even call yourself a Conservative when you advocate deficit spending for Wars which are unaffective, unwaranted, and have no real end or objective?
How many more Liberties have to be stolen before you wake up? Dr. Paul is the only advocate for Liberty in the entir race. Perry, Rommney, Cain??? Please. I am truly frightened for this country, financially and morally. I don’t agree with everything Ron Paul says, but I believe his is the only champion of Liberty we have left and I believe that he is really the only one with the cajones enough to straighten out our economy. I also believe with a FULL TRUST that Ron Paul doesn’t care what ANYONE …i.e. power brokers, big business, etc…throws his way, if it isn’t good for our Liberty, it isn’t good. I want to be able to worship God and Jesus Christ in my church until I die and don’t want to be penalized for talking about God in public….Ron Paul will protect the Constitution that allows me to do that. Sorry for the run on.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 12:02pmI have to agree with RP on this. If our own government, who is doing everything wrong it possibly can in its handling of “terrorism”, has to begin to set up road blocks within the borders of the country, government has lost the battle already.
Government is importing tens thousands of “refugee class” muslim “immigrants” into our nation annually. Giving them housing, food resources, money and transportation. All at our expense.
Government has allowed segregated groups of these very same people to build, organize and train in camps all across the nation to attack America and Americans when the time has been defined.
Americans spend like cray on their governments demands for this and that. But this terrorist thing has been a gold mine for government. It has demanded that Americans make whimsical sacrifices as government flails about in the dark in hopes of getting in a lucky strike. All the while standing in the middle of a ground zero of its own making. When this thing takes off, and it will, things are going to change in a way Americans never knew was possible.

I can vouch for the fact that Jack-booted Thugs were VERY prevalent when I was a child in Occupied Europe. House invasions at any time of day or night – with strip searches of men, women and children – and babies – were to be expected daily. If they appeared at mealtime they thought nothing of taking every crumb of our meager meal off the table, including the infant’s meal – just because they could – and they would throw it away when they left. Chimney flues were regularly torn apart, piano wires were torn out of the instrument, matresses were cut and ripped, clothing was dumped into any available liquid (the cow dung heap was a favorite where I lived) water barrels (our only supply water supply) were tipped and spilled. I could go on, but you get the idea. There is quite a ways to go before the TSA can equate to the Jack-booted Thung I lived among!

With all due respect you need to do a little more research on youtube. The TSA and other U.S. police are doing MANY of the things you listed. And in some cases more extreme. They stop cars that are nowhere near an international border. They yank drivers out of their seats. They search trunks illegally or, in my case, force you you stand in the hot Texas sun for an hour until you finally “give in” to the illegal warrantless search.
There’s video of TSA agents beating people like Pastor Anderson, or federal police busting down doors and shooting people, children, dogs inside their homes.
Things ARE as bad as you remember from your childhood.

What’s wrong with Pauls foreign policy ideals? Non-Interventionalism is Constitutional. He would have certainly been supported by Thomas Jefferson.
“If there is one principle more deeply rooted in the mind of every American, it is that we should have nothing to do with conquest.”
Instill ourselves in nation building, protecting other Sovereign Nations is a frivolous waste of the public funds. Not to mention it intentionally stations our young men and women in harms way for a cause that IS NOT ours.
Let a foreign Nation attack us with Paul as president. The world, and his detractors will get an “once only required” of how non interventionalism works. The best part is that he won’t give a damn about the UN, or some stupid Geneva Convention rules of engagement. The only rules that Paul will follow will be those that determine a swift retribution and unfettered releasing of the might of the United States.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 11:28pm@southernloyalty We’ll do what the Israelis do. We’ll profile and actually investigate real suspects at the airport, and leave granny and your 6 year old daughter alone. And we’ll allow pilots to be armed when on the plane. And we’ll allow the Airports to provide their own private security. Every major mall, sporting event, bank, etc., in the US, is not patrolled by the TSA, and they’re doing just fine. Look at the big Casino’s, and I dare you to tell me that private security teams don’t work.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 10:51amBen Franklin said, “They who can give up essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
How true that is.
On the other hand, these unreasonable searches seemed a little less unreasonable to me shortly after September 11th. Don’t know if that was because it was Bush and not Obama or if it was just the zeitgeist. I’m for racial profiling; better yet, the kind of profiling the Israelis do. And the TSA has always seemed over the line, to me.
As time goes on, I find myself agreeing more and more with Ron Paul. I wonder what would actually happen if we pulled ALL of our troops home. I doubt it would be as bad as the alarmists would have it. But it’s hard to believe that the terrorists would just leave us alone. Personally, I think it’s worth a try. I think Ron Paul is worth a try, warts and all. We’ve been willing to accept other candidates in the past, with their warts. I doubt Ron Paul could come close to matching the damage they’ve done.
I just think we‘re so used to the direction we’ve been going that that familiarity keeps us in our trajectory that’s leading us over a cliff. Whether it‘s at Obama’s speed or Romney’s speed, we’re still headed over a cliff. So, as we look at the treacherous and arduous looking rock climbing that Ron Paul is suggesting, we’re a little leery.
Ron Paul may not be perfect, but who is?

And no… the terrorists will absolutely not leave us alone. They want the whole planet under islam. They hate us because we’re blocking their EVIL INTOLERANT agenda. My one brother‘s job is to go to weigh stations and wherever else and test the diesel in semi trucks’ gas tanks to make sure it’s not the off-road, farming type of diesel. Did you know that there was such a thing? I didn’t until he got the job. The other brother is some kind of supervisor over other agents, so he makes close to $100k a year, while the other agents make only $75k. I don’t know about where you live, but in Utah, these are terrific salaries. And what are they based on? Just what some bureaucrat in some smoke-filled room somewhere thinks they’re worth, while the rest of us with real jobs actually have to create value for our pay.
Mind you, my brothers are great guys, but it’s like nothing to them, I guess, to work for the enemies of liberty, as you said, for a paycheck.

Want to know what is more troubling, they were arresting 3-400 illegals a month( and these were barely reported in the local paper, you have to research to find this out). People flying into Montreal and driving down into US…..I chatted up the agents, as in ‘what do you expect to find so far from the border?’ kind of thing. It shows you how pointless and useless they are at the border if they are getting these kinds of hits a 100 miles away. so I don‘t feel ’safer‘ from terrorists under their ’new’ rules or from illegals for that matter. Oh, and they stopped those check points a couple of years back, too many arrests/detainments happening, it didn’t look good(that was told to me from the agents who worked this area, having been moved up North from the southern border to train the Northern agents to be more effective). hum.

Glenn made a big deal about abiding by the constitution when the media and most of the GOP was willing to suspend the constitutional rights of the NYC bomber, but when it comes to dealing with other countries (Iran in particualr), he is right there with them as well. A little analysis would show that Dr. Paul is 100% right with Iran. If Iran is seens as a threat to the U.S., congress needs to declare war or at least authorize the president to use force. The Executive branch has become WAY too powerful and needs to be brought back into its constitutional authority. I think haveing Dr. Paul on GBTV with Glenn would make Glenn a RP supporter. He (Glenn) would have to be against the constitution otherwise. Judge Napolitano has Dr. Paul on his show regularly because they both champion the cause of liberty.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 10:28amHoly crap, I had no idea this was happening! When is the SCOTUS case scheduled for, this is ridiculous! Paul is absolutely right (whether you like him as a candidate or not has nothing to do with him being right on this one particular issue).

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 11:11amI was amazed that Republicans pushed the national ID card on us. They wanted us to think it was a way to keep illegals from voting, etc. In truth, it is a violation of our civil liberties and Ron Paul said NO! Every presidential candidate says national ID cards are a good idea. I say it’s NOT a good idea.
Get a voter ID card, maybe — but NO NATIONAL ID CARDS!

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 11:17amYou are spot on. E-verify is burdensome to business, as well. Similar things were done in germany in the late ’30s that were later used to assist ethnic cleansing.
Romney is only by chance a conservative. If he were to wake up one morning with a greater urge to promote equality, he could easily be a market socialist. If he were to wake up another morning and feel an urge for nationalism, he could be a fascist. His large government views are only neutral towards freedom, his ideology could be easily tipped…
Report Post »He won’t do either of these things, but couldn’t his successor (assuming he is the next POTUS) be one?
