Rove: ‘Obama Did Not Win Much of Anything’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama promised to change Washington’s ways. Yet he is as caught up in them as ever.
It was just at the start of this week that Obama launched his re-election bid with a sunny video of real people talking about their hopes and needs. It was the very image of life outside Washington politics.
By week’s end, Obama was mired in budget negotiations, canceling trips and scrambling to hold off a government shutdown that would surely erode the public’s faith in his leadership.
That’s the messy business of governing. And this is how it is going to be this time around for incumbent Obama.
Beyond the vision for economic competitiveness he wants to talk about, Obama is seeking a second term while having to engage in the gritty, frustrating process of governing a deeply divided government. He got bogged down in legislative tactics in his first two years, even when he won fights like health care, and is now trying to avoid all that.
Then came this test of leadership. The White House says Obama ultimately got the compromise he wanted — a bill of spending cuts that he supported without having to gut his priorities or swallow policy changes he could not accept. When it all finally came together, the administration offered it up as an example of cooperation under the highest stress.
But it was an exhausting process that left people wondering why the government was somehow on the brink of debacle.
This is change?
The showdown serves as a reminder that for all the powers that come with the presidency, one of the perils is an agenda you cannot control. Crises like Libya, Egypt, Japan’s earthquake, Iraq and Afghanistan all demand his attention.
In this case, the new House Republican majority, led by Speaker John Boehner, turned a must-pass budget bill into a political chance to give voice to frustrated voters and tea party conservatives who demanded spending cuts. And suddenly Washington was back in brinksmanship mode again, where nothing gets done until deadline. And sometimes not even then.
In public, Obama tried to keep it at arm’s length.
“I shouldn‘t have to oversee a process in which Congress deals with last year’s budget,” Obama said as the time got short this week.
But in fact he was involved up to his neck.
It was Obama’s veto threat that made clear he would not accept the scope of spending cuts Republicans wanted. It was Obama who said he would accept no more short-term bills to keep the government afloat for a couple weeks at a time unless there was a broader deal in hand. And it was Obama who kept saying it was time for leaders to act like grown-ups.
The White House said his strategy was to stay behind the scenes, work the phones and let his senior aides do the negotiating. That hard-to-see engagement provided a huge opening for Republicans to question his leadership. And it led to rumblings from frustrated lawmakers in his own Democratic Party who wanted Obama to openly attack the cuts Republicans wanted.
The White House figured it would take those hits. In the midst of this conflict and other challenges, a Gallup poll in late March found that an eroding number of people said Obama was a strong and decisive leader: A little more than half of those polled, down from 60 percent one year ago and 73 percent two years ago.
The West Wing thinking was that a better result would come if Obama not try to overheat the issue. They also believed that people across the nation were worried about gas prices, not a messy political squabble over a spending bill and that the voters didn’t hire Obama to be a legislator. Obama would go public when it meant the most.
The vocal version of the president emerged on Tuesday.
He said Americans don’t want games but rather results, the pragmatic approach. That’s the style White House strategists believe will bring back the election-turning independents to Obama. He spoke like a leader who had world troubles on his mind and demanded feuding lawmakers to keep working.
“There are some things we can’t control,” he said. “We can’t control earthquakes; we can’t control tsunamis; we can’t control uprisings on the other side of the world. What we can control is our capacity to have a reasoned, fair conversation between the parties and get the business of the American people done.”
But it wasn’t getting done, and his voice was not the only one setting the tone.
“The president isn’t leading,” Boehner said Wednesday. “He didn‘t lead on last year’s budget, and he clearly is not leading on this year’s budget.”
Obama met with Boehner and Reid four times in the White House across the week. He kept his plans to travel to the Philadelphia area on Wednesday to talk about energy, looking comfortable and almost carefree as he laughed with workers at a wind-turbine company about their families and their cars.
Yet by Friday, Washington had sucked him back in. He canceled a trip to Indianapolis, scrapping the attention he wanted to give to clean energy.
And then he jettisoned a scheduled weekend getaway with his family to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia while he kept in touch with Boehner and Reid.
While striving to avoid a shutdown, Obama‘s team privately thought they would come out OK in the public’s mind if it came to that.
The thinking was that the president had presented a reasonable case of agreeing to spending cuts without going too far, and that people would frown upon Republicans if the government stopped fully running over an unrelated policy conflict like abortion.
One Gallup poll found that 58 percent of adults, and 60 percent of independents, favored a budget compromise over a shutdown.
But another reality lurked for Obama.
The politics-saturated budget battle graphically demonstrates how government is not supposed to operate. No matter who is to blame, all will be blamed.
The everyday Americans Obama talks about so often just want a Washington that works. That means staying open for business.
And for incumbents with opponents who run the House, it can mean getting encumbered by Washington, once again.

The lesson proves they CAN compromise and reach agreement when it affects their own pocketbooks! Now, who’s your Daddy??? This needs to be changed, they are not worthy! Perhaps the Tea Party can take this cause on now that the congress is singing *** baya?

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS OVER THE LAST 6 WEEKS:
In spite of the defeat in the Nov. 2 elections President Obama’s agenda is making outstanding progress. Did the Republicans really win control of the House of Representatives? Obama’s agenda is still rolling ahead, full steam!
On February 24, 2011 President Obama declared that he would not enforce the “Defense of Marriage Act”. Was Mr. Obama was declaring himself a Dictator and renouncing our Constitution? Is this our new form of government? Our constitution requires that the Executive Branch enforce all laws. Selective enforcement of the law has been a hallmark of the Obama Administration since he took office.
To ensure that we understood his declaration he ordered the military to attack a sovereign nation and he got away with it!
Having effectively repealed the Constitution, President Obama passed 2 Billion dollars of credit to his crony, Mr. Soros, allegedly to finance an oil drilling scheme off the coast of Brazil.
With these recent accomplishments, the Obama Administration is flying higher than ever. His “Brown Shirts”, (Union s and Community organizers) are becoming bolder every day.
God bless and save the American Revolution! http://commonsense21c.com/

Posted on April 9, 2011 at 11:51amI wouldn’t call this a win for Republicans like the rest of the media is. If there is a victory it is only political and only a very minor fiscal victory for the country. I still have hope for Boehner, but I am not completely sold. I fear this is more of the same type of compromise we have seen in the past, not nearly enough to save the country. We will see what happens in the real fight that is this years budget and the Paul Ryan bill. So many people inside the beltway like Rove (the ultimate insider country club repub), and Kristol, and sometimes Krauthammer (although I actually like Charles) look at things only as black and white political victories and forget what is a victory or defeat for the country.

Other than his Momma making any foreign man who hated the US very happy, her primary focus seems to have been creating a little racist commie to fulfill her dream of ending our “imperialism” ( And punishing Daddy’s success maybe? ).
It seems that his ONLY purpose in the world is to be judge, jury and executioner of The United States of America! And because of a bunch of REALLY STUPID “voters” he has tried really hard to do just that!

I’ve been listening to all the opinions of the Tea Party people, etc. this morning & surprisingly there are some like Huckabee and others that felt it was probably the best we could get under the circumstances of having both the Senate & Presidency as stubborn Dems & they thought Boehner did the best he could with hopes this will help down the road on the bigger issues like the debt ceiling coming up. Cavuto says he thinks he did a remarkable job under the cirumstances. It still isn’t a “done deal” & may not get the votes needed to go through. Too soon to know. So….think it’s too soon to be making conclusions about having the Tea Party be a third party, etc. Don’t think that would work & would just make it easier for Dems to win. We’ll see…….

I truly understand and respect your opinion, but I think what we are seeing here is a charade, the Republicans think this makes them look good because originally they were only proposing 30 billion in cuts and they got what appears to be 38 billion.
So what we are seeing is several weeks of a dog and pony show because many of us called our congressman and expressed our outrage at only 30 billion and in all that time they were only able to up the cuts by $8b and when it is all said and done the real numbers will be more like 100b added and nothing cut. That is the reality.

Unfortunately there are many, probably the majority of Americans, who believe that cuts are ok as long as it doesn’t effect them personally that is what we are up against. In Florida Gov. Scott has become very unpopular and he is basically just trying to do the necessary things to get Florida back on track and create jobs yet his popularity is plummeting because he is working at cutting away at socialism. To his credit he is not worried about the polls but what will probably happen is he will be so tarnished for doing the right thing that by the time his next election comes around he will be defeated and everything he has accomplished will be undone.

I listened for some time, offering a few non-committal comments, but they insisted someone should do something. Get rid of this progressive repuke, just listen to his words, I know he does, he has a know it all better than you kind of thinking, and all his policies were great for America right?
ISn’t this guy a CFR member? He’s probably on the Soros payroll somehow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He doesn’t make sense to you because you and all your Progressive buddies hate THE TRUTH!
Point your finger…but you’ll have three pointing right back at you — your own. You make all these vile statements, but you (again) offer NO FACTS!
If you start with a cage containing five monkeys and inside the cage, hang a banana on a string from the top and then you place a set of stairs under the banana, before long a monkey will go to the stairs and climb toward the banana.
As soon as he touches the stairs, you spray all the other monkeys with cold water. After a while another monkey makes an attempt with same result … all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water.
Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.
Now, put the cold water away.
Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one.
The new monkey sees the banana and attempts to climb the stairs. To his shock, all of the other monkeys beat the crap out of him.
After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be assaulted.
Next, remove another of the original five monkeys, replacing it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment… with enthusiasm.
Then, replace a third original monkey with a new one, followed by a fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him up have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs. Neither do they know why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.
Finally, having replaced all of the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys will have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, none of the monkeys will try to climb the stairway for the banana.
Why, you ask? Because in their minds…that is the way it has always been!
This, my friends, is how Congress operates… and is why, from time to time, all of the monkeys need to be REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME.
Posted on April 9, 2011 at 2:38pmWe Karl has it all wrong as usual. I spend much of my time showing him up for the republicon he is. Mark Lavin had it right when he said this deal is nothing but a giant scam. Get ready conservatives. Hannity and Limbaugh will be firing up the propaganda machine in the next few weeks. Get ready to hear the same old line that “a vote for a third party is a vote for a democrat.” Ive listened to that garbage for the last twenty years and for the time. I pray that the tea party will now see the republicans for what they are…..the opposite side of the same coin as democrats!!!! A conservative third party would only force republicans to be honest!! They would vote together on most issues and would not give up power to democrats. I would rather have one tea party senator with one republican senator and one democrat senator, than to have two republican senators with one democrat!! Think about it.
Posted on April 9, 2011 at 2:49pmAm I the only one who is wondering why there were not thousands of people in the Washington mall demanding more from their representatives. The Democrats/progressives, like Schummer, Pelosi, Reid, have controlled the argument more than what you believe. They have driven a wedge in the Tea Party with the help of the media by calling them racists, extreme, etc., where people have actually lost hope. You can write, call, email your representatives and it seems to be in vain cause at the end it all comes down to the lobbyists and Wall Street as to what is cut and what’s not. This sickens me that citizens no longer really matter other than for the money for these idiots to piss away. The supposed conversation won’t change until the masses (concerned citizens) decide to make it happen. I’d like to see how Washington D.C. would act when we decided to take the matters into our own hands and quit sending them money to spend. Now that would be a true government shutdown.
And who can we thank for the progressive tax code of 70,000+ pages — Woodrow Wilson started this crap! Abolish the IRS, flat tax baby! You save money #1 – no more IRS, then everyone pays fairly, the tax coffers would be full! This BS we pay into now is fraud! LOL, freedom of information is a thing of the past in this communist adminstration…why ARE unions so prevalent in the WH? Why are so many self-avowed communists in the WH? This is a travesty, treasonous and we should deal with this…all of them worship Saul Alinsky, who said the FIRST radical was Lucifer — HAVE YOU READ ‘Rules for Radicals’? I hope you have, cause Hillarous Clinton and Barak Obumbler both worship this man, thus Lucifer! Take that to the bank and deposit it…
