Royal Society Report Recommends Birth Control, ‘Wealth Measures’ to Achieve an ‘Equitable Future for Humanity’

Twenty-three scientists got together in a working group for the Royal Society — a fellowship of scientists who encourage use of science to benefit humanity – for 21 months to discuss ”how can the world balance the need for economic growth and forestall ecological disaster,” as David Biello puts it on Scientific American’s blog.
The recommendations they’ve come up with in their report “People and the Planet” include managing the population along its current rate of decline and developing methods to “reduce [economic] inequality”. Royal Society notes the recommendations made in the report are not a “definitive statement” as the concepts discussed are complex, but it is an overview of human impact on the environment and “policy guidance [for] decision makers and [...] interested members of the public”.
Here are some of the key recommendations made in the report:
- The international community must bring the 1.3 billion people living on less than $1.25 per day out of absolute poverty, and reduce the inequality that persists in the world today. This will require focused efforts in key policy areas including economic development, education, family planning and health.
- The most developed and the emerging economies must stabilise and then reduce material consumption levels through: dramatic improvements in resource use efficiency, including: reducing waste; investment in sustainable resources, technologies and infrastructures; and systematically decoupling economic activity from environmental impact.
- Reproductive health and voluntary family planning programmes urgently require political leadership and financial commitment, both nationally and internationally. This is needed to continue the downward trajectory of fertility rates, especially in countries where the unmet need for contraception is high.
- Population and the environment should not be considered as two separate issues. Demographic changes, and the influences on them, should be factored into economic and environmental debate and planning at international meetings, such as the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development and subsequent meetings.
Here Eliya Msiyaphazi Zulu, the executive director of the African Institute for Development Policy who was a member of the Royal Society working group for this report, explains that if there is to be an “equilibrium between people and planet” the consumption of the West and other developed countries has to be reduced and the other end of the spectrum — the 1.3 billion poorest in the world — need to be supported in some way:
Biello writes some of what the scientists recommend is already happening, like population control. According to Biello, the rate of population growth has been declining since the 1960s, thanks to “empowerment of women,” which he notes comes with other benefits as well. He also notes more people are moving back to urban environments, instead of widespread rural or suburban homesteads, which he says “may help reduce the global impacts of the extended family of man.”
Biello also brings up an interesting dichotomy with the scientists’ recommendation to curb the the rate of population growth. He writes:
Fears of the wrong sort of population growth have a long dark, history, but actual history suggests that an excess of humanity can actually be a good thing, providing the renewable resource of human ingenuity that then fuels economic development (and world-changing scientific ideas). Plus, there is the troubling question of: what number is the right number, who decides and who enforces it? As the Royal Society’s motto goes “take nobody’s word for it.” Not even the Royal Society’s.
All this comes at a time when scientists have relatively recently been using the term anthropocene to describe a new geologic era, defining the time period from roughly the Industrial Revolution to present day. Recently, the Planet Under Pressure conference commissioned a video that showcases the effect of human activity on the Earth:
The group Globaïa, which focuses on environmental issue education, produced the animation, which comes with a message that there are solutions that can help reduce some of the detrimental effects humans have had on the environment.
What are your thoughts on the report recommendations? The animation?

Report Post »2. If they are so concerned about waste, they can create businesses that are more efficient, rather than complaining. If they want renewable energy, they can do their own investing, or being that they are scientists, they can invent new technology instead of telling governments to stop using energy.
3. Wanting to control specific populations is called Eugenics. It is pure naziism.
4. I am surprised these so-called scientists did not commit suicide when Mt. St. Helens erupted and spewed ash over most of the planet. That had far more of an effect than anything that man has ever done.

There is no inequality but there are injustices….All of the people of the world can do as we have done and break their chains and become nations of kings. They have the same God given opportunity our ancestors had. The reason this Nation has thrived is because George Washington and others with him did not go to war because the king was rich and we here were poor. No he and the other founders went to war so that we here could have the OPPORTUNITY to become rich and free. Not out of misplaced wealth envy!

The philosophers dating all the way back to ancient Greece spoke of over population and the need for population control, yet every year we prove them wrong by increasing the population of this planet along with the average quality of life. If we are going to go to war soon, it will be over political and pseudo-scientific ideologies of the left. I wouldn’t mind killing a few people who support any brand of eugenics. Posted on April 28, 2012 at 3:31amThis is an absolute solution. About 20% of the population of the USA believes in Global Warming and Environmentalist. So, if we simply stop burning coal, and start burning environmentalist, that could reduce our carbon footprint, and we can rid ourselves of some “Human” pests. I figure in less than 3 years, all Environmentalist will produce enough energy to keep the USA running and when we run out, we simply will go back to burning coal. With the demand reduced by 20% and all the screaming Mimis out of the way, the humans can go back to making society better. But then again, that may sound cruel, or inhumane, but if you really feel that way, just register at “Save The Earth”. We will send a rep around in no time.
And if anyone feels this is extreme. Well, tell ELF. I am just adopting the same aspect to humans that they are, just take a side, we are all expendable, it just depends on what side you sit on, as to who goes to the gas chamber. What humans are worth less? Decide, because the line is being drawn, you have to step on one side or the other.

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 6:48amIt used to be labeled “population explosion” to make it sound dire. Then “overpopulation” to make it less violent sounding and more number oriented. Now it’s “stabilizing” to redistribute incomes. To initiate a world tax on everyone to support corrupt governments that the U.N. has approved. Since the global warming taxation scheme is falling short, another old chestnut has to be revived. And even when the population of ditchwater countries is over the imaginary limit set by accountants, it has never helped to throw money at them and expect a positive result. And chets remark of “thank God for abortion” has to be the winner of the most backwoods mentality on this subject. Really sad and unfortunate choice of words to believe.

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 8:33amEugenics, ala wikipedia.
Sir Francis Galton, 1883 defined eugenics as “the study of all agencies under human control which can improve or impair the racial quality of future generations”. Historically, the term has referred to everything from prenatal care for mothers to forced sterilization and euthanasia.
eugenics can also be a study of “improving human genetic qualities”. It is sometimes broadly applied to describe any human action whose goal is to improve the gene pool. Some forms of infanticide in ancient societies, present-day reprogenetics, preemptive abortions and designer babies have been (sometimes controversially) referred to as eugenic.

Or, if there is a third man doing the same task in Mexico, and he decided to build his mound on the beach while being too ignorant to be aware of the rising tide, then both the man in the U.S and Kenya have to ship dirt to the man in Mexico so the man in Mexico doesn’t have to dig more himself.

I’ve had a rather unpleasant experiance with recreational 4-wheeler riders. They just took it upon themselves to ride all over my hayfields and trample down the grass – without even asking. Grass I need to produce an economicly pertinent commodity. Their excuse was that I had alllll this land – and appeared to them to be doing nothing with it at present.
My response was that by that logic I had equal access to their nice yards, which was producing nothing of benefit. I’d be right over with my plow and get it ready to plant corn. The soil types of their yards was much more productive than my hayfields, and should be put to a better use than the waste of energy maintaining it for asthetic purposes only.
Communism is rife in our society. These 10 “recreationists” feign themselves to be conservatives. When propositioned with “equal access according to utilty” – they didn’t like it so much. They would have outvoted me 10:1 in favor of themselves, proving the tyranny of democracy as well. Private property rights for them, none for me. Democracy itself then becomes a communistic tool.
The sad reality is that if these idiots had worked like I have the last 25 years, in which I gave up recreation to a large extent, they could have bought land enough to ride on without violating my property rights.

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 2:06amThere are plenty of people living in poverty in democracies – India, Mexico, Turkey, the Philippines, Brazil. Getting rid of a dictator doesn’t magically make poor countries rich or poor people as powerful as rich ones. You don’t need a dictator to keep poor people from having a fighting chance at upward mobility, you just need to neglect to educate them.
Report Post »Twobyfour
Posted on April 28, 2012 at 7:09amChet, that is rather a simplistic notion. Education helps, but it’s not a magic bullet either. Not mentioning the fact that you may make an access to education available to anyone, but you’ll still end up with a small segment of population that can cope. Mind you, I do mean education, not indoctrination. Therefore the education is a guaranteed vehicle to potential income disparity, FYI.
But, it is not the major component of upward mobility. People can self-didact. Quite a few successful people were drop-outs, because the educational system did not do it for them. They taught themselves, because they were motivated. When looking what was the main component of their motivation (wealth acquisition) and how that main component was facilitated, you end up with the real factor for upward mobility–well defined, guaranteed property rights.
By the same token, when you look at societies that lack upward mobility aspects, you’d find out that the property rights are not well established (the well off members participate in oligarchic structures that guarantee their property rights b the virtue of power), or none at all.
Provide a legal framework for guaranteed property rights to anyone and you’d see a miracle — 10-20 years, society prospers. Those that would need a specialized vocation would naturally seek education, though a sizable majority would be content to gain upward mobility with trades, merchandising and services that do not require the time (and money) investment
Report Post »Chet Hempstead
Posted on April 28, 2012 at 3:49pmI didn’t say that education alone would allow poor people to lift themselves. I said that lack of education alone would prevent them from doing so, and that’s true. When you talk about self-taught success stories, you are talking about the United States where everybody stays in school until at least the 10th grade whether they want to or not and revealing your ignorance of conditions in parts of the world where just educating children until they are literate enough to further educate themselves is the exception rather than the rule.

Syphilis has been carried through centuries of the Royal Society’s brains and carries on in the gene pool. All the others I have no idea for an excuse.

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 12:18amThe world is not overpopulated.
Report Post »That is not the cause of poverty.
There is enough land in Australia alone to give every man woman and child a quarter acre lot for a garden. And that would still not use up the entire continent.
Poverty is caused by lack of liberty.
Starvation is caused by lack of liberty.
Lack of liberty is intentionally orchestrated by the global elite.
Hence so is the human suffering it begets.

Really?
Come on dude…….Is that really what you took from his post?
Or do you think maybe he was just illustrating a point?
Good grief, it’s no wonder this ship is sinking.
Report Post »Chet Hempstead
Posted on April 28, 2012 at 4:36amNo, Billy, I think that he thought that he was illustrating a point, and I was illustrating that he wasn’t. My point is that you don’t have to be crowded to be overpopulated. We’re part of a system of life on Earth. We don’t have unlimited space to put unlimited people. We can’t live where nothing will grow, and we can’t grow food everywhere that things will grow, we have to leave some wilderness to keep up the oxygen supply.
So I’m sorry, what was that point that you thought he had that he was trying to illustrate? Because I actually agree with the part about most poverty and starvation having political roots, but I don’t see what the hell that has to do with the amount of land in Australia.

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 12:11pmChet,
I generally like to keep my posts short and concise, so two quick points.
Yes, you can live where nothing grows. Modern man has devised ways of bringing the food to you.
How do you think North Korea gets much of it’s food supply?
So were you giving us a clue as to what the next manufactured environmental crisis is going to be?
An oxygen shortage?

Posted on April 29, 2012 at 4:50amMoving food requires energy. Moving water requires even more energy. So, yeah, some people can live where nothing grows for a while, but the price in resources for having them live there decreases rather than increases the total sustainable population. Unless and until we have some source of very cheap unlimitedly renewable energy, the bulk of the Earth’s population is going to have to live somewhere reasonably close to where food can be grown and those who don’t will always be vulnerable to political and economic shifts endangering their food supply. Therefore, my point that it is pointless to talk about the amount of empty land in Australia, remains valid.

Enough with the hand wringing already.
Heaven forbid that something might actually require the use of energy.
Hey Chet, I have a used 1500 B.C. Flintstone mobile for sale……..you interested?
It’s got low miles, but the Sabre Toothed Tiger skin upholstery needs a little work.
It was only driven to the tar pits once a week.

Posted on April 30, 2012 at 8:38pmNo, man does not keep finding ways to provide more and better food supplies, the food stopped getting better about the time I was born, and now as the supply increases the quality drops. You have to pay so much extra for food as good as what we ate as children, that even here in the richest country on Earth, most of us can’t afford it. So, yeah, of course it’s much better to kill tens of thousands of fetuses a year before they are born, than for me to have to pay double to have tomatoes in my salad that taste like tomatoes.

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 12:05amThe Socialists motto should be: LIMIT!
Report Post »lukerw
Posted on April 28, 2012 at 12:15amOf course, increased Limit creates Rarity and increased Value… whereas the Socialists say… that they want to provide everyone with everything… which requires the UnLimited and results in Commonality!
Report Post »Chet Hempstead
Posted on April 28, 2012 at 1:55amSo unlimited population decreases the value of human life, while increasing demand for necessities beyond supply. Limiting population limits demand for necessities of life, thereby ensuring access to the supply for individuals.

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 3:01amHey Chet,
How come none of your Chicken Little prophecies never seem to pan out?
Quote from 1970, (He was, or is an ACTUAL scientist…..imagine that)
“Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.” – Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist
Again, that was from 1970

The Socialist solution to Supply & Demand Balance is always the same: Kill the DEMANDERS! Freedom is the opposite of Limit/Security! Value upon Human Life is IMMORAL! — Socialist HealthCare is IMMORAL! My Value upon my Life is a My Morality! — Another’s Value upon my Life is a Blasphemy! Stop trying to Formulate Population Growth like an Economist; One does not have the Right to Control People; And, Nature prevents Over Population without any Help!
Just because Socialists can Think & Reason… does not mean that they are Sane!

You are hopeless Chet.
That was just one of a long list of bunko enviro wacky predictions that have fizzled.
Would you care for the whole list?
You seem to forget Chet, that man keeps finding newer and better ways to provide more and better food supplies, using less land and resources than previously thought possible.
So you think it’s better to kill someone before they are born, than to give them a chance at life, because that life might not turn out just perfect.
Sick and twisted logic there buddy.
And please give a couple of weeks notice before we are going to run out of air to breath, OK? I’ll go stock up on some tanks of oxygen.
