Hear Rush’s 7-Segment, 40-Minute Defense of Newt Gingrich

Below is a lengthy, yet worthwhile, audio clip from Rush Limbaugh’s Thursday broadcast. In it, the conservative icon defends GOP candidate Newt Gingrich and dissects the reasons why Ronald Reagan would likely have supported Gingrich in his quest for the presidency.
The thought-provoking segment delves into decades’ worth of instances surrounding the Contract with America architect and makes for a persuasive case in favor of his candidacy. Providing facts, figures and history unlike any other who has argued either yea or nay for Gingrich before, Limbaugh says the coordinated media and political onslaught against the Republican candidate — like the one featured on Thursday’s Drudge Report (screenshot follows) — is incongruent with his recollection from the Reagan years.
While at one point in the broadcast Limbaugh cedes that Gingrich did make some of the statements for which he now stands accused, he suggests that much of their content was taken out of context. Limbaugh also posits the former House Speaker merely had to adapt in order to succeed in the “softer” Bush-41 era, thus Gingrich suggested to then-candidate Bush that following a different path than did Reagan might be the only prudent course of action.
Throughout the course of the 40-plus minute broadcast, Limbaugh paints a picture of shared respect and admiration between Gingrich and Reagan. If this were not the case, Limbaugh maintains that Nancy Reagan would never have embraced Gingrich, as she was fiercely protective of her husband.
Audio is provided by DailyRushbo (which says it’s the produce of seven different segments) and a full transcript can be found on the Rush Limbaugh website.
Food for thought, Rush-style:
Below is an excerpt from the broadcast:
RUSH: You’ve got Nancy Reagan. People have produced, I think, either a letter or a video from Nancy Reagan saying that Newt would be the obvious inheritor of Reaganism. And you’ve got Michael Reagan, Ronald Reagan’s son, who’s endorsed Newt. This Elliott Abrams piece, though, folks, of all the stuff that‘s out there is probably the most devastating because Elliott Abrams’ credentials are impeccable. He almost went to jail for the cause. For example, here’s one thing he says about Newt: “As a new member of Congress in the Reagan years — and I was an assistant secretary of state — Gingrich voted with the president regularly, but equally often spewed insulting rhetoric at Reagan, his top aides and his policies to defeat communism. Gingrich was voluble and certain in predicting that Reagan’s policies would fail, and in all of this he was dead wrong.” That’s the tone of the entire piece by Elliott Abrams. But there’s more than just an opposition research document dump here going on. You have Elliott Abrams, Bob Tyrrell coming out with some of this stuff. It is overwhelming, and it happens in one day.
[...]
Now, back to this Newt stuff. I got a note from Jeffrey Lord. Jeffrey Lord writes for the American Spectator, which is Bob Tyrrell’s bunch. Bob Tyrrell has a devastating piece: Newt is Bill Clinton, only worse! Oh, it’s devastating. This Elliott Abrams piece is devastating. And they all happen the same day. So Jeffrey Lord says: Wait a minute now, Nancy Reagan, 1985, Goldwater Institute, after the Reagan era — and Jeff Lord says, “Believe me, if Nancy Reagan thought for a nanosecond that Newt was anti-Reagan, she would never have been on the same platform with him.” I can vouch for that. I’ve never seen a more protective wife of anybody than Nancy Reagan. If you in your life said one thing against Ronald Reagan, you were gone. You were banished. You were never allowed to be in the same room.
Talk to the people who knew them both and worked with them, and they’ll confirm that. So Jeff Lord says (paraphrased), “Well, if all this that we‘re hearing yesterday’s true, what the hell’s Nancy Reagan doing out there giving Newt basically a huge award?” She said, “The dramatic movement of 1995,” that was going on then, “is an outgrowth of a much earlier crusade that goes back half a century. Barry Goldwater handed the torch to Ronnie,” her husband, “and in turn Ronnie turned the torch over to Newt and the Republican members of Congress to keep that dream alive.” That’s Nancy Reagan in 1985. Now, Jeff Lord worked in the Reagan White House.
Again, the entire transcript can be found at Rush’s website.

And just remember that when President Romney is towing the company line in 2012 and doing this and that around the edges(after 6 Years Romney doesn’t even have a well defined tax plan yet) it is the Republican base who was ‘frightened’ into puttting him in office. It makes one wonder why they are all against him and so supportive of Romney (both sides). It almost feels fixed from the getgo. I‘ll vote for obama’s opponent whoever that is. I doubt Romney will repeal Obamacare though. It is amazing that dirty politics is all we have. We have to let the independents decide and that whole group bothers me. How can anyone be an independent? What do they base their choice on if they can be on either side? I am a woman who actually thinks Newt is the best choice. The country is in freefall. I don’t care about the past or the personal. There is alot of spin and politicians will be politicians. Old quotes are just old quotes…spun around either way. In any case I “agree,” so to speak, with him on Newt and concede that in some ways Rush has more knowledge of Gingrich’s years in office than I.
I agree that Gingrich, as Speaker of the House, was reprimanded almost unanimously by both Republicans and Democrats of the House, and fined $300,000, but only for “political reasons”. And he wasn’t forced out of his position as Speaker by his Republican peers. He just quit to pursue other opportunities that made him more money. Hello!, he’s a capitalist!
And he has lots of friends who will say that he didn’t ask for an “open marriage” with his second or third wife – I’m not sure which – although members of his campaign are now saying that statement was “bologna” which is not true. His original statement was true, not “bologna.”
The thing I have against Romney is that he’s too rich to understand the situation of people like me, but on balance, I’m throwing my weight behind Gingrich.

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 4:42amI am glad to see that so many of you see it as I do. I remember Newt’s term as Speaker well and what we are being told now is not the truth. The ethics charges Newt faced were primarily payback by the Democrats for Newt’s role in forcing the resignation of Speaker Wright a few years earlier. I think the fact that he was exonerated on all but one of the charges proves this.
It is true that Newt lost the support of many Republicans and resigned because he didn’t think he would be reelected Speaker. He did not resign because of the ethics charges.
It seems clear to me now that the Romney campaign has been behind most of the negative stories Newt and the other candidates have faced. I believe this to be true because I do not think the media is smart enough to have discovered these stories themselves and because only Romney has enough money to finance such opposition research. I am convinced that the Romney campaign fed the information about Herman Cain to the press also.
Although I wasn’t planning on voting for Romney, I always thought he was a good man. Now I am not sure. I think he is hurting the GOP’s chances to defeat Obama with his negativity. What I expect to happen next is that Newt‘s supporters will start attacking Romney’s Mormonism. If that happens, I believe Obama will be reelected and it will be Romney’s fault.

Elliott Abrams Caught Misleading on Newt
Yesterday we took note of former Reagan State Department official Elliott Abrams’ piece over at NRO that went after Newt Gingrich on his relationship with Reagan. While voting regularly with Reagan as a young congressman from Georgia, Gingrich, claimed Abrams, “often spewed insulting rhetoric at Reagan, his top aides and his policies to defeat Communism.“ Abrams then goes on to cite ” a famous floor statement Gingrich made on March 21, 1986.”
Or sort of cites it.
In fact, I’m sorry to say, what appears to be going on here is that Elliott Abrams, a considerably admirable public servant and a very smart guy, has been swept up in the GOP Establishment’s Romney frothings over the rise of Newt Gingrich in the Republican primaries. Posted on January 26, 2012 at 6:58pmSince human beings have seldom been saints, whether in Eastern Europe or elsewhere, there were no doubt many individual flaws and shortcomings among the non-indigenous elites to complain of.
AD FEEDBACK
But those shortcomings were not the fundamental reason for the economic disparities between Eastern Europeans and Western Europeans. More important, seeing those Western European elites in Eastern Europe as the cause of the economic disparities led many Eastern Europeans into the blind alley of ethnic identity politics, including hostility to Germans, Jews and others — and a romanticizing of their own cultural patterns that were holding them back.
What happened in Eastern Europe, including many tragedies that grew out of the polarization of groups in the region, has implications that reach far beyond Europe, and in fact reach all around the world, where similar events have produced similar polarizations and similar historic tragedies.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 6:57pmToday, in America, many denounce the black-white gap in economic and other achievements, which they attribute to the same kinds of causes as those to which the lags of Eastern Europeans have been attributed. Moreover, the persistence of these gaps, years after the civil rights laws were expected to close them, is regarded as something strange and even sinister.
Yet the economic disparities between Eastern Europeans and Western Europeans remains to this day greater than the economic disparities between blacks and whites in America — and the gap in Europe has lasted for centuries.
Focusing attention and attacks on people who have greater wealth-generating capacity — whether races, classes or whatever — has had counterproductive consequences, including tragedies written in the blood of millions. Whole totalitarian governments have risen to dictatorial power on the wings of envy and resentment ideologies.
Intellectuals have all too often promoted these envy and resentment ideologies. There are both psychic and material rewards for the intelligentsia in doing so, even when the supposed beneficiaries of these ideologies end up worse off. When you want to help people, you tell them the truth. When you want to help yourself, you tell them what they want to hear.
Both politicians and intellectuals have made their choice.

In fact, Rush made fun of Newt‘s ’grandiose’ Moon Colony remarks and went on to give explicit details about the mistakes and contradictory statements made by Newt about supporting Goldwater and Rockefeller and the timelines that showed how Newt misspoke and misrepresented himself in many areas. I might suggest that all who are reading this post go back and listen carefully to the whole program that Rush did today. Keep your eye on the prize. We must stand together no matter what if we hope to defeat Obama in November. Divide and Conquer is still a good strategy for defeating your enemy.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 6:55pmI listened to this on the radio on the morning drive. He does not ‘Remember’ this side of Newt and can speak to the other side, standing up for Reagan. BUT Rush also says that these things are True, he DID say them. So in public and what Rush was hearing was pro-reagan, but on the floor and behind closed doors, it does not look like it was so.
So at best, you have a politician that will say one thing to one party and another thing to different party, appease the crowd if you will. This seems more like the Truth, I don’t think he was Anti Reagan, I think he was both.
But that also lends itself to the image we have here. Someone that will use the Reagan name to get votes, has no problem lying about things and will attack you if you even try to call him on it.
The debate will be interesting tonight, CNN finally has a confession from Newt that he has been lying, lets see if they can even ask the question before he turns on them and gets the crowd into it.
I love the media bashing, but not with someone that is simply lying through his teeth.

Those who have convinced themselves that Gingrich is a “conservative”, and that his record, personal life and character do not matter, are in the minority. Gingrich would be a disaster as the nominee, and if, by some evil magic, Gingrich is elected to replace enemy-obama, he will be a disaster for America.
Newt’s new-found love of conservative principles, morality and small, efficient government is hollow, completely transparent and only a few months old. Don’t fall for it folks – Gingrich is a liar, a user and will say and do anything for power. Rush might be dumb enough, or, delusional enough to fall for Gingrich’s lies (or perhaps Rush is on the payroll), but most Americans are not.

In spite of all that, Rush is obviously routing for Newt now. I’m afraid half his brain is beginning to misfire. It’s time he start using his whole brain.
