Russia Sending Carrier-Led Naval Battle Group to Syrian Coast

A Russian battle group led by the heavy aircraft-carrying missile cruiser, Admiral Kuznetsov, with two supporting ships will head to the Syrian port of Tartus in early December.

Russia Sending Naval Battle Group to Syrian Coast

The Kuznetsov (pictured above) is a combination aircraft carrier and missile frigate, and its  armaments include:

  “12 long-range surface-to-surface anti-ship Granit cruise missiles, a six-gun short-range surface-to-air missile system Kinzhal, eight close-in air defense Kashtan gun-missile systems and two UDAV-1 anti-submarine systems.”

Russian military officials insist the mission is a longstanding military exercise and the timing has no connection to the current unrest in Syria.

Nevertheless, Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Viktor Kravchenko, told reporters that a counterbalancing military force to NATO’s is very useful for the region, because“it will prevent the outbreak of an armed conflict,” according to RT.

The Admiral also reminded reporters that the Soviet Union had a special naval squadron for years to “deter” American and allied forces from aggression in the Mediterranean Sea. The base in Tartus is a relic of this Soviet need to equip and repair the Soviet Mediterranean force.

Currently, the base is mostly used to support vessels of Russia’s Black Sea fleet. Tartus houses approximately 600 military and civilian Russian defense personnel.

Does the US Navy still have a 7th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea or was it scuttled by Democrats?

I wonder if the Chinese carrier will be joining the Russian one. The Mediterranean is now a Russian Lake thanks to the Democrats in the US Congress.

One of my close friends is Ukrainian, & during the Cold War, he was stationed on subs(rarely nuclear, as he insisted they caused birth defects and /or sterility. Now he is in Sevastopol and owns several fishing vessels. Point of mentioning him and his background is to give insight as to why I believe the Russians will not stop vying for world domination. They are likely our greatest danger. Much more so than China. The entire world stage is unfolding faster and faster, gaining momentum as time draws ever nearer.
Who would’ve ever dreamed the Middle East,(and of course Israel) would have become the central focal point for the up & coming WWIII? Oh, yeah, every one of God’s prophets & those of us who believe in, adhere to, apply to our daily walk and stand on God’s Word and the Living Bible.

We played cat and mouse with the soviets each time I deployed to the Med. Don’t hear much about the Sixth Fleet in the Med any more. Most assets are probably over in the Persian Gulf these days.

If the Russian navy presence prevents the NWO idiots from attacking and installing Al Qaeda in Syria like they have in N. Africa, I hope the Russkies stay!

This has been known for a week on Debka files. Russia has 3 war ships in Syrian waters and is sending in this carrier because the US has sent GHW Bush carrier in the Syrian waters. Syria believes the CIA and Sunnii rebels are causing the trouble for Assaud trying to dispose him. They are facing down the USA for battle but you wont hear that on MSM.

Dr Paul is a non-interventional believer. We should Trade and be friendly with all nations. We should not be getting involved in their disputes and business. The UN is the cause of most every problem we now face with there “peace treaties and resolutions and accords. Think about that! I will not bake cookies I plan to tell everyone about the truth . Paul’s minimalist foot print policy with regards to foreign policy would not be anymore effective in preventing calamity that the fiercely isolationist movement that gave Wilson and Roosevelt fits during the early years of WWI and WWII. I’m not saying that pulling back and regrouping is not a great idea….it is, but to pull ALL forces back to US soil with the obvious dark clouds of another WW now gathering considerable steam abandonment of the hard won strategic bases near the center of gravity would lend the enemy the time it would need to consolidate it’s gains. Such a scenario would leads to more lives lost than if the US uses it’s projection of power wisely in a timely manner.

Paul is a decent guy but his policies would vitually guarantee massive loss of life once the main deterant (that is US power) is removed the areas now rattling sabres for all to hear and for all to see. The question boils down to this….who is listening and who is watching ? Burying ones head in the sand works as well as communism….it’s a failure at the expense of many lives. How many times must we as race repeat this mistake ? That is why the West must maintain strong military presensce (at home and abroad).

Charles Lindberb was once the keynote speaker at an American Nazi Party rally held at Madison Square Gardens in the late 30′s. He and others like him (staunch isolationists) were a PITA to the Rossevelt admin (who knew that USA would have to join WWII at some point).

Delta….Stop promoting the fear. It is killing our nation. Ron Paul would never leave us “dead in the water”. Yes, he would bring a logical end to many of our military “obligations”, but I seriousley doubt that he would ever leave us in a position of vulnerability. The military machine is used as a tool to promote national pride, a distraction for the fascists to carry out their plans. Do you realize how long we have been at “war” in the middle east? How about 20 years? More if you count all of our years supporting the rebels, that we’re now fighting ourselves. And how much real progress have we made? Yes, we have eliminated some enemies, but have we really changed anything? Is Iraq a peaceful nation? Is Iran any less a threat? How about Pakistan? Are our enemies drawing back in fear? Is there any end to the fighting in sight? In case you haven’t noticed, all of this military spending is putting quite a drain on our already empty coffers. So, where is our “return on investment”?
What we need is solid, consistent foreign policy, not a bigger, better military and Ron Paul is the only one with an inkling of what that policy should be.

    US doesnt respond WHY ?
3.) Osama’s Group needs help in overthrowing Libyia (Not for freedom but for more terror)
US Responds with other countries ( New launching ground for Terrorist training camps with the capital to create a real force)
4.) Egypt uprising creates a more oppressive regime in Egypt.
US praises the Egyptians for fighting for democracy Hmmm.
5.) The largest uprising in Iran since the revolution
US doesnt Respond thousands are dead.
Responsibility to protect is used for action in Libya
US Congress and the American People are outraged over no response to Syria’s actions
    Administration in a bind.
Lets talk with Russia and see if they can move some ships into the area and create a situation that keeps us from protecting those that are being killed.
Just seems like an easy solution to keep us from being engaged.

You mean they finally got this rust bucket underway. I remember back in the ’70s just before I left the US Navy that this vessel got underway three times, got out of the harbor, then had to be towed back in. It had been gathering rust since the USSR went down. I hope their planes land very lightly. Otherwise, the US will be charged for any damage and Obama would probably pay it.

@ john, We must have been in around the same time. I was a radioman on board the USS Grayling SSN 646 in the summer/fall of 76. We had just come off patrol in the North Atlantic and was headed for Holy Lock, Scotland to drop off our intel package when we received a message that the USSR had just deployed the Kiev, their first carrier, for sea trials. We were ordered to standby. Another sub (I can’t remember the name) which was closer got the orders to intercept and conduct a ‘hull surveillance’ of the Kiev. Traffic indicated that, that sub stayed underneath the Kiev taking pictures through the periscope for 63 minutes. There were no good pictures due to speed. I couldn’t help but think about the Fairwater Helmsman/Planesman. That had to be the most intense 63 minutes of his life.

Lets not forget , Russia got their “oil money” during housing bubble in the US when oil shoot up from $30 all the way $140. Then when Lehman collapse oil fell back down to $36 (thanks to Ben Bernanke prices of oil went back to $100) . Russia needs $75 oil just to break even. Now , we have European crisis that will end in another great recession or possible a depression in Europe. Then we have Russia that heavily depends on export of gas and oil. Guess what will happen with oil and gas prices? China heavily depends on export to Europe. Guess what will happen to GDP of China? China need 10% annual increase on GDP just to put food on the table of 1.5 billion people. With situation in Europe it will be unsustainable. My point is that US does not need rockets and tanks to bring some countries on their knees all it takes is create a bubble and bust or if we stop buying new cell phone every 6 months and keep an old one for 2 years 100 million Chinese will go hungry. On the other hand countries like Iraq, Afghanistan , Iran etc.. military is the only way because economically they are sort of isolated from the rest of the world.
