Tyler Clementi
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — The death of a Rutgers University freshman stirred outrage and remorse among classmates who said they wished they could have stopped the teen from jumping off a bridge after secret video of his sexual encounter with a man was streamed online.
Tyler Clementi, 18, jumped off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River last week, a lawyer for his family confirmed. (Police recovered a man’s body Wednesday afternoon just north of the bridge, and authorities confirmed Thursday that it was Clementi’s.)
“Had he been in bed with a woman, this would not have happened,” said Rutgers student Lauren Felton, 21, of Warren. “He wouldn’t have been outed via an online broadcast, and his privacy would have been respected and he might still have his life.”
Clementi was a violinist whose life revolved around music, said Ed Schmiedecke, the recently retired music director at Ridgewood High School, from which Clementi graduated this year.
“He was a terrific musician, and a very promising, hardworking young man,” Schmiedecke said.
Clementi’s roommate, Dharun Ravi, and fellow Rutgers freshman Molly Wei, both 18, have been charged with invading Clementi’s privacy. Middlesex County prosecutors say that they used a webcam to surreptitiously transmit a live image of Clementi having sex Sept. 19 and that Ravi tried to webcast a second encounter on Sept. 21, the day before Clementi’s suicide.
Collecting or viewing sexual images without consent is a fourth-degree crime, and transmitting them is a third-degree crime with a maximum prison term of five years. A lawyer for Ravi, of Plainsboro, did not immediately return a message seeking comment, and it was unclear whether Wei, of Princeton, had retained a lawyer.
A spokesman for the Middlesex County prosecutor‘s office didn’t return messages inquiring whether there could be additional charges, and experts diverged on the potential for the pair to face more severe charges in light of Clementi’s apparent suicide.
Parry Aftab, who runs the website WiredSafety, said it‘s possible the classmates could be prosecuted for violating Clementi’s civil rights.
“If these kids could get away with one privacy law violation, that would be a sin,” she said.
But former assistant Essex County prosecutor Luanne Peterpaul said such a prosecution was unlikely because the federal government doesn’t recognize sexual orientation as a protected class.
Peterpaul, vice chairwoman of the gay rights group Garden State Equality, said prosecutors might be able to pursue the case as a hate crime if they could establish that the defendants were motivated to act because they perceived Clementi as gay. But that can be hard to prove, she said.
ABC News and The Star-Ledger of Newark reported that Clementi left on his Facebook page on Sept. 22 a note that read: “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.” Later, his Facebook page was accessible only to friends.
Even if the young violinist from Ridgewood was not well known at his new school, his death stirred outrage.
“The notion that video of Tyler doing what he was doing can be considered a spectacle is just heinous,” said Jordan Gochman, 19, of Jackson, who didn’t know Clementi. “It’s intolerant, it’s upsetting, it makes it seem that being gay is something that is wrong and can be considered laughable.”
For some of Clementi’s new classmates, the first time they learned much about him was when they got word of his death.
“I guess the only person I haven’t talked to is Tyler ’cause he’s like really quiet and shy,” said Justin Lee, a freshman from Princeton who lives on Clementi’s hall.
Other students who did know Clement were upset that they didn’t do more to help him. “I wish I could have been more of an ally,” said Georges Richa, a freshman from neighboring New Brunswick.
About 100 people gathered Wednesday night for a vigil on campus. They lay on the ground and chanted slogans like, “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re not going home.”
Rutgers University President Richard McCormick wrote in a letter to the campus, “If the charges are true, these actions gravely violate the university’s standards of decency and humanity.”
Coincidentally, the university this week launched Project Civility, designed to get students thinking about how they treat others.
Gay rights groups say the suicide makes Clementi a national example of a problem they are increasingly working to combat: young people who kill themselves after being tormented over their sexuality.
On Tuesday, a 13-year-old California boy died nine days after classmates found him hanging from a tree. Authorities say other teens had taunted the boy, Seth Walsh of Tehachapi, for being gay.
Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality, said in a statement that his group considers Clementi’s death a hate crime.
“We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of a young man who, by all accounts, was brilliant, talented and kind,” Goldstein said. “And we are sickened that anyone in our society, such as the students allegedly responsible for making the surreptitious video, might consider destroying others’ lives as a sport.”
In response to Clementi’s death and other perceived instances of bullying or harassment, the group Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays said it planned to issue a “call to action” on the subject.

I think the reason gay kids are four times more likely to take there own life is they are ashamed because they know what they are doing is wrong. I don’t think gay people should be discriminated agenst, or hated, but it is should not be socially acceptable. Kids like this nead REAL help. Posted on October 2, 2010 at 7:47amHey ROUGHNECK…
Your are most definitely wright, those engaged (living) in the “gay” (homosexual) lifestyle are in need of something, and it is not persecution, or bashing nor any of the sort. Wright again about “hate the sin, love sinners, for we are ALL sinners, ROMANS 6:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”. Should we hate the sinner, that would include ALL of us hating one another who are just….. “born in the flesh” !
The something that is needed, that which man can not supply, is a “Wright Relationship”, with the redeemer of lost souls, Jesus the Christ of God. When a person receives God’s Christ, to trust Him with their very life, asking, (there must be an asking) Him to save him having believed on Him (Jesus), he also then will receive the “gift” of the Holy Ghost (spirit) of God to abide in ( literally) him.
Then and only then will that person become a “child of God”, and will forever (all eternity) belong to God,and He, God, will begin a mighty work in that person, bringing him to be more like His, God’s only begotten Son, Jesus, unto all obedience to the Father’s will for his life!
good posting, and good questions ROUGHNECK.

This culture is dying. We have become cruel for sport. And the grown ups are engaging in speculative amateur legal debates and hair splitting before the boy’s corpse is even in the ground.
I checked out from this failed American experiment long ago. The culture is actually not dying, it’s dead.
Report Post »LLATPOH
Posted on October 1, 2010 at 8:37amYou only need to take a look at history to note that cruelty for sport is not new. The Colosseum in Rome wasn’t holding rock concerts, you know.
I won‘t say you can’t, but you really shouldn’t look at such a small slice of society and judge the rest on it. Most of what I’ve seen here shows that people are truly sad that this boy jumped to his death because of a cruel prank, as am I.
As for checking out of the “failed American experiment,” if this means that you’ve moved out of the country, I have nothing but absolute respect for you. It shows that you stand for something and are willing to do what it takes to show it.
But our culture isn’t dying or dead. You’ll find that it swings back and forth like a pendulum, and the only time it can be considered dead is when it stops moving. I don’t see that happening. The civil rights movement? Feminism? Acceptance of sexual orientation? Granted, these ideas take time to mix in, but they’ve all found a place in our society. So I don‘t think it’s even close to dead.

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 8:29pmHey JOSE WASABI,
They are NOT kids, (except maybe in their minds), but in fact are young adults who should have been thinking of “consequences of action”, and there always is a consequence, whether good or bad!
Actions taken without consideration of outcome most often times will result in an undesired consequences, and more so than not, in the way of a suffering and or harm to another or ones own self !!
The question is then, would this young man have “KILLED”, himself had this breech of boundaries, committed by the other two involved had not occurred ?, Are these two other adults, guilty of causing the young man to go over the edge, was it their “ACTIONS”, (selfish in nature, to say the least), that brought him to the point of complete distress, dismay, being so embarrassed and shamed as to take his life, not being able to bear the exposure to the “WORLD”?
YES, they are guilty, in the eyes of the most High God !
they should be held accountable for the role they played in this needless, end of a life !!

Further, he didn’t seem very upset after he found out his roommate had switched on the camera for the first tryst with the older man. After he found out the roommate was planning to do it a second time, however, he freaked out (in his words) and – apparently, from what I read – trashed the roommate’s belongings. He chatted on some gay sites about the incident and then, inexplicably, decided to kill himself.

The consequences of this are truly tragic and at least three lives have been ruined.

Hate to burst your bubble, but homosexuality is not a mental illness. A lot of young people, gay and straight, who leave home for the first time to go to college are just trying to figure out who they are, who God meant them to be. It takes more courage just being an out LGBT person than you will ever have in your entire life. We are constantly told we are going to hell, we are mentally ill, and that God doesn’t love us by people like you. New Flash — God does love us. He created us exactly as He wanted us to be, complete with our talents and desires. The best any of us can do is use our lives in ways that honor Him who created us. I thank God every day that He brought me through the torment of my teen and early 20s years. I thank Him for showing me His love and how I can lead my life, as a gay man, in a way that honors Him above all else. I pray every day for guidance and the wisdom to recognize the path He has laid out before me. I pray that God softens the hearts and opens the minds of those who attempt to push us away from His love, for I fear that they are doing a great inservice to themselves for all eternity

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 9:29am@PostProgressiveAmerican- awww was I too insensitive for you sunshine? That’s too bad.
@Deutscher- what did I say that wasn’t 100% accurate?
@RobertCA- it IS 2010- 30-years later the CDC just reported that 20% of HOMOSEXUAL/BISEXUAL Males are HIV/AIDS+…that means 1:5 of the Men Tyler Clementi may have met would put him at risk of CONTRACTING H.I.V.
If anyone here is IGNORANT it is YOU.
@prepper1776 Your comment is out of line. Not only have you CONVICTED Ravi/Wei of some IMAGINARY CRIME, you then ADVOCATED VIOLENCE against those two teenagers while KNOWING NOTHING ABOUT CLEMENTI or his obvious MENTAL ILLNESS.
For all anyone knows TYLER CLEMENTI COMMITTED SUICIDE because his MALE LOVER DUMPED HIM afdter their TRYST.
The 3-of you can SMOKE your ONLINE RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Posted on September 30, 2010 at 10:35pmWE NEED NEW VOYUER LAWS…Point blank. This is only going to get worst with micro technology, lose morality, and value of privacy being striped away from you each day.

Posted on September 30, 2010 at 11:01pmwhen you say we need new laws you open a can a of worms that should be left alone. Congress will take a simple law that those who have no respect for the law will break and then more laws will be made till they control even more of our lives,
Report Post »no we need to find better ways to protect our lives ourselves.

Posted on September 30, 2010 at 11:16pmNO the rules on privacy are not and do not cover majority of the new wave of social media outlets and instant broadcast by the average citizen. If you don’t acknowledge the problem and examine the problem it then becomes the preverbal “can of worms” you speak of..and that can is filling fast
It really doesn’t matter at this point; we have lost so much privacy due to a faceless war without end.
This can be summed up in two words: Social Conditioning…

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 12:12amI am very sad for this kid and his family but I hate to see stricter laws. This was horrible college prank that went beyond common decency. On the other hand…what if he had been running a meth lab in his room and the roommate filmed it? What if he had been building a dirty bomb? I can see the liberal left and criminal minds using these laws to further their interests and endeavors and if so, we may never expose folks like ACORN. I would rather see more seminars on the virtue of respecting one another as uniquely divinely created individuals than creating tougher laws and penalties for filming. Moreover, dorms should be used for studying and sleeping …not sexual encounters. Am I being too old fashioned?

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 5:45pmToo late, America is already morally deplete, having lost any sense of “values” decades ago, when as God was tossed out to appease the liberals in this Nation!
Be ye warned however, God is seeing to this, just take a look at how we are in a spiral….downward ?
