Safeway Employee’s Suspension for Defending Pregnant Woman Draws Nationwide Protests

A logic-defying corporate decision in sleepy Monterey, California last week has turned into a headache for one of America’s biggest supermarket chains.

Ryan Young, a meat clerk at the Del Rey Oaks Safeway, was minding his own business and doing his job, right up until Quyen van Tran, a customer, decided to beat his pregnant girlfriend in the store, in full view of other customers, and Young himself.

Young was not prepared to stand for this:

“Every few seconds he would turn around and push her and then he actually kicked her,” Young said. “I told him to calm down and he was just irate.”

Young said Tran refused to stop and jumped in to stop the assault.

Outrage Sweeps Nation, News Media After Safeway Employee Suspended for Defending Pregnant Woman From Assault

Ryan Young

“I saw no one was intervening in the situation and I just became afraid for her safety and also other customers safety,” Young said. “The guy was out of control and pretty much lost it in there.”

Chief Ron Langford of the Del Ray Oaks Police said if Ryan did not intervene, things could have become much worse for the victim.

So Young came out of the whole affair a hero, even according to police. Surely Safeway gave him a pay raise for getting involved, right?

Just the opposite. Safeway has suspended Young without pay for violating company policy. What company police, exactly? This video from CBS 5 San Francisco explains:

That’s right. Apparently employees are supposed to just call security and not intervene in situations like this. Young broke this policy, apparently ruining Safeway’s attempt to cultivate a reputation for tolerating domestic abuse, so he was suspended.

As of yesterday, if public pressure still has any power, that suspension looks increasingly in doubt. Central Coast KSBW Action News 8 reports that a group of protesters has descended on Young’s old place of employment and begun actively picketing the store:

Protest held outside Del Ray Oaks Safeway

Safeway has reportedly issued a public statement about the event, claiming Young was not fired for the confrontation, but for other actions “prior to the confrontation.” What actions they mean have not been disclosed.

Safeway is, however, currently reviewing surveillance tapes regarding Young’s incident, and union representatives have been reportedly offering financial assistance to Young as the ordeal goes on. Local authorities have also been given surveillance tapes, though they have not yet been released to the press.

Still, the story has gone viral nationwide at this point. Everyone from the Washington Examiner to Slate has either covered the story or expressed outrage. Whatever happens, Safeway is likely to lose a lot of customers.

Rules, rules, rules…Judaizers have them by the score. Jesus is proud of Ryan Young and so am I. He epitomizes the “Love thy neighbor as thyself” rule that Jesus Himself proclamized as being the perfect adjunct to the act of loving God. As such Mr Young has shown himself to have decency and care for his fellow man.

Now Sureway management have exposed themselve as shameless rule following Judaizers. Not helping your neighbor on any day, especially the sabbath, because of rules infuriated Jesus. I will let Sureway rot on the vine of non-business activity as they are unworthy.

God bless a man that has the courage to stand up for what is right and good. God bless Americans for showing they care about the injustice that has been done to him. I WILL NOT COMPLY…..if complying means standing around and watching a pregnant woman get hurt while I wait for someone else to do something about it. I’ll go down myself before policy takes priority over humanity.

The one way to get a bad rule withdrawn from the books is to enforce it strictly. Whatcha gonna do Safeway?

Most of those rules you are lamenting were put in place by : UNIONS

rules are in place for safety and job protection, this incident falls mostly in the category of job protection. If the expectation was for all employees to do the ‘right thing’ then no longer would there be a need for security. This puts a bad light on the UNIONS and less so on the company management.

In today’s world where we see people turn a blind eye to someone being assaulted or stepping over the body of a hit and run victim it is refreshing to see someone stand up for the saftey of a stranger in need. And it is also equally disappointing to see a company (a company in this case and more often government) punish such heroic and selfless behavior by sending the message that no good deed will go unpunished.

At least Safeway could have said, “You know, we really don’t want our employees doing that. In this case, we’re glad that there was a good resolution, but in future we need to let our security teams handle this.” Then they could have saved face and kept the employee. Wouldn’t that have been a good thing for Safeway?

Kid deserves a raise, and maybe an invitation to test for the Police Department. The ;beater’ needs a serious attitude correction as well, perhaps a variation on the old Welcome Wagon concept, to make certain that the cultural elements are properly domesticated. If I saw it, the little ******* would be in traction and the ‘girlfriend would be visiting him in the hospital for a while.

I do agree at some point before he should have called for security or 911 then intervene. However, since it did not work out that way, a reprimand and a review of store policy should suffice. It seems they were gunning for this guy even before this happened.

      So Safeway condones domestic abuse.

      Laws, lawsuits and insurance…

A Walgreens employee once told me they are not allowed to intervene in the numerous jump and grabs (mostly for cartons of cigarettes) that happen at the counter near the front door.

Unarmed CHILDREN and old ladies can steal right in front of them and they must let it happen.
      Call the police afterwards, etc.

Granted, every employee’s LIFE is more important than the cash, but if the employee CHOOSES to get involved, he or she should NOT be reprimanded.
Fair enough, no reward as it may tempt the NEXT employee to make a life decision based on MONEY, but at least no reprimand.

      Laws, lawsuits and insurance.
Sums up America pretty good these days…

      Great job dude.
I am proud of you regardless of what Safeway thinks.

The term your trying to use here, judaizers, is used but once in the scripture and it springs from the “Incident at Antioch”, wherein Paul challenges Peter over the need for gentiles to come under the law as well as Grace. [see Galatians 2:14] I’m going to give you the benefit of doubt and assume that you’re not just trying to stir the pot here with your choice of terms.

While I won’t be shopping at Safeway anytime soon because I disagree with their policy, it is their right to have such a policy. And while I applaud the gentleman for allowing his sense of right and wrong to rule the day; he did so in violation of the company policy and with the all the personal risk that doing so carried. All the more reason to applaud him!

Communities –families, businesses or civic- all have rules; even the church has rules and Paul was the not silent on the importance of church discipline in enforcing those rules. Having or following the rules and norms of our community does not make us judaizers; It makes us good citizens.

MOM: In Texas the Safeway store is Tom Thumb. I live with 1 mile of 2 Safeway stores and hate it so much, I drive an extra 2 miles to go to Kroger which is more shopper friendly.
How dare Safeway let this man go for doing the humanitarian thing, protecting that woman.

Why I quit shopping at Safeway is because they have an organic vegetable section that has food so spoiled, I wouldn’t feed it to the hogs. They don’t take care of that section and charge more than the Whole Foods charge for same items.
There seems to be a lot of contention among the employees as I became friends with many of them before I quit shopping there. They aren‘t helpful like they are at Kroger’s either. They always seem to have a chip on their shoulders if you ask for anything special. Don’t need that even tho I did enjoy 4or 5 of the employees. They know how I feel and why I don’t stop in anymore except for one item I needed for dinner. So, Safeway, you SUCK.

I’m gonna be the odd-ball and stand up for the employer on this one. Most employers have policies like this. I’m guessing the reason is that most people are not trained to effectively handle situations like this, and if Safeway were to provide that training, they could be held liable for anything that happens, to the employee or the customer.

The problem isn’t Safeway. The problem is the litigiousness of people. If the employee was hurt, he could have sued. If the customer was hurt, he could have sued. Would either prevail in the suit? Who knows, but it costs money to defend.

I am glad that the employee did what he did, but I‘m not surprised by Safeway’s action.

As odd as it may seem to a lot of readers, hicycles is right. I was at work one night and saw a person walking around the front of the store with cuts all over their head acting strangely (I think it was a mental problem, not a fight or anything based on the behavior). I called a manager over and the manager refused to do anything because we didn’t want to risk offending the person in question. All of you reading are thinking exactly what I was “but that person needs help” and your right. But thanks to our hyper-litigious society, businesses can’t afford to take the risk of getting sued. Some may think the pregnant lady can sue Safeway for not protecting her. But as far as I know, no business is required to provide security for it’s patrons. You can’t really blame Safeway for that policy. You gotta blame the ambulance chasing lawyers and the citizens on the juries that not only find in favor for those lawyers but award large sums of money. It’s those sorts of things that force these sorts of policies on corporations.

Beating and kicking a pregnant woman could result in the death of the unborn child. No decent person could stand and watch a murder happening if he had a good possibility to effectively intervene. My daughter broke up a fight once in high school between two girls. Later, the big bully girl called her over and apologize and thanked her. Said that if a teacher had seen it – she would have gotten kicked out of school because it was her third offense for fighting. (This was in an affluent school district – not some urban hell hole.) This employee did this guy, not just the woman, a favor.

If this did indeed occur the way Mr. Young conveys then he should be complemented on acting as a gentleman and coming to the aid of the weak. In this case: a pregnant women. Our society has become so fraught with companies protecting themselves from liability, I would expect that the security division of Safeway is outsourced. This individual that made an inherent decision to do the right thing must therefore must be punished. We certainly can not have grown adults making decisions without the permission of the lawyers and upper management. This might result in a liability to the company. Better safe than sorry. So what if people have to witness the inhumane treatment of another individual. Are we not getting used to this type of behavior? After all, company and attorney’s first – employee and consumer last. Pathetic. Thank you Mr. Young for coming to the aid of the weak. Please keep up the good work.

Safeway? Now known as Unsafeway. Shop there at your own risk. We see you getting beat, we’ll just tend to the meat. Perhaps the Safeway administrators would be giving him a raise if he had offered the attacker a meat tenderizer so he could finish the job and get on with his shopping.

Safe-Way? Maybe not so much… If the grocery chain suspended this local hero for things done prior to the incident (yea right) they picked a poor time to display it. They should have (still could) riden the fantastic wave this choice employee provided them, come on Safeway, honor this man.

Some of these business’s practices of not allowing employees to protect themselves or others has apparently sprung from all of these schools that have their little zero tolerance policies. Those just allow bullies to take over and a kid raises a finger to defend himself he is suspended as well. Some just suspend both or all involved even if they attempt to defend themselves. These businesses just do the same thing.
I hope the protesters are able to help persuade a sensible change and get this hero back on the job.

This is something you would expect from a government agency not a private enterprise.
Hey Safeway, if that Pregnant woman was hurt do you think she would sue her husband? NO she would sue YOU ! ! ! Duh !

They have now lost at least one customer in the Los Angeles area. What if the woman had a miscarriage? Or worse, lost her life and the baby? Can’t these buffoons see beyond their noses? I can’t believe any HRD would act this way. Then again, it is California, people here are just insane. And TUPID

Sometimes you have to do things right and sometimes you have to do the right thing. Evidently, the management at Safeway isn’t aware of this.

Young should have been given a raise and a promotion for his heroic deed. NO ONE should tolerate domestic violence, anywhere, private or public. Good for you Young!

Why would this be a union issue? Who is the employer? Does not the good Samaritan law cover this? California is a sewage pit where doing the right thing is frowned upon. What if this was a gay person being beat on in the store, Is it Safeway’s policy to allow hate crimes in their stores?

This may be the best thing for Mr. Young. He may have been suspended for his actions, but now that his story has made headlines, other business will want a hire a man of his character. He is a gentleman who will not allow his customers to be abused. What business would not want him?

It’s too bad that we have become a nation of not responding to a situation in a positive way. I applaud Mr.Young for courage and Safeway will suffer.

This man did the right thing…if common decency is trumped by a piece of paper, then there is no Honor left in this world….you beat a woman, pregnant or not, in front of me, you will get your teeth knocked clean out…and I will gladly go to court and pay a lawyer to defend me….most of the people I know would do the same…if people are afraid of lawyers, then they are cowards, and as we all know GOD HATES A COWARD…;-)

There are policies like this everywhere in corporate America. The problem is lawyers and people with big degrees and no life experience or common sense.

Shoot, my grandmother would have pistol whipped him. But then, she and the rest of her generation would be so incredibly disgusted with who we’ve become as a nation.
