Salmonella Outbreak: Cargill Recalls 36 Million Pounds of Ground Turkey

Salmonella Outbreak: Cargill Recalls 36 Million Pounds of Ground TurkeyWASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — The Agriculture Department says meat giant Cargill is recalling 36 million pounds of ground turkey linked to a death in California and at least 76 other salmonella illnesses.

Illnesses in the outbreak date back to March and have been reported in 26 states coast to coast.

Government officials say that even contaminated ground turkey is safe to eat if it is cooked to 165 degrees and handled properly before cooking.

Why don’t we get rid of the FDA and get rid of Cargill and other big food processors and go back to the day when you could purchase locally raised, locally butchered beef/pork/chicken/turkey?? That would seem like a good solution.

The thing is, if a butcher has customers who get sick, the entire town hears about it and the butcher is out of business because everyone will go to some other shop to buy their meats. That’s called FREE ENTERPRISE!

Many years ago (early 1970s) I purchased all my meats from a local butcher. I knew the farmer who raised the turkey I bought (the only turkey farm within 50 miles). The beef was better than anything I’ve eaten recently. Even the hamburger SMELLED like good beef when it was cooking. Pork…. yummy! And I never ever got salmonella from chicken. I didn’t wear gloves to handle meats – and never got sick from raw meat. Ever. Can’t say that nowadays.

Big anything is not necessarily better. Smaller farms, small butcher shops may be a tad more expensive but damn, at least you KNEW what you were getting. If you bought local meats from local farmers, it was good stuff – if it wasn’t, they went out of business. Someone else took their place and worked hard to make sure their stuff was good.

Radiation would help as much as proper food handling. It comes down to one thing- CONSUMER IGNORANCE.

And it ONLY took them 4 MONTHS to determine the source? Way to be on top of things! Realistically how much is still out there? One death and 76 illnesses spread over 4 months and 300 million people? Why does something not seem right to me here?

FDA was suppose to just oversee the processing and storage of commercial foods – the problem is all the otehr political mandates Congress and the Presidents have placed on them that inspection is one of the last things they actually spend $$ on. Cargill is not alone in having a problem – remember the “kosher” jewish meat producer in NY (I think that is where it was) last year? Man – now that was a dirty, crappy place to work or have meate processed! You’ve had Tyson problems, etc. Happens all over. The problem is inspectors – it’s like one for every 5,000 establishments/processors/producers. No way one person can inspect 5,000 places a year. Nope – FDA is needed, but shrink the mandate and actually make fines worth the cost of keeping up to regulations – not like wastewater spills that go to the river and they fine them $3,000 or $10,000 for doing constantly for 6-months! Accountants run the show – change the operational cost so the fines make it more cost effective to prevent the contamination then just ignore it.

The problem these meat pushers all hire illegals who are lousy with diseases [TB and other 3rd world sicknesses] and are never tested for anything and yet that Commie, Muslim Son-Of-Belial in our White House won’t close our borders to stop it! He’s just to busy blowing our tax money on his vacations and staff!!!

The bateria in the food is totally preventable if the meat is fully cooked to 180 degrees. The meat doesn’t have to go to waste it can just used in animal food at least that would give some justifcaction to the deaths of 3,000,000 delicious turkeys.

I have a meat grinder – if I want anything ground, I do it myself – beef, pork, turkey and chicken. That way, I KNOW it’s clean (and yes I wash meat before I grind it)

Why don’t we just irradiate and be done with it already. What a waste of food imo. And for you jokesters out there, gama rays will not cause items to become radioactive or cause you to turn into the Incredible Hulk if you eat food that is irradiated. It will, however, kill anything living in that food which would save millions of lives over time. Only thing it may not stop are toxins created by bacteria, but nearly all deaths are not caused by the material created by bacteria or other organisms in food, but by live organisms themself. :)

Two issues here – one is the over use of antibiotics in meat and poultry production. We’ve (World) know it for 20+ years and it’s getting worse. Second, is lack of proper treatment of wastewater before it’s used to irrigate crops – and no, your wastewater plant can NOT kill these bugs because they are already resistent to chlorine and chloramine. We- USA know it- EPA knows it – but it’s a tremendouse economic issue – want your sewage rates to rise 100-150%? Some of us have been working on this for years – proved how to treat the wastewater better without chemicals to kill these – as UV is pointless. BUT – no go. The pharmaceutical industry is always spending $$$ and Federal grant $$$ to develop new antibiotics because that is where the $$ is – they would rather sell billions of pills per year then actually solve the problem.

The sooner we get rid of over regulation by the Agriculture Department, the FDA and EPA the better off we’ll be. Yeah, so some people die. But all this testing is costing taxpayer money! And, it’s reducing the profits of the job creators.

There was no Agriculture Department when this country was founded and they did just fine. Sorry, I prefer my individual freedom and extra cash for the job creators even if it means a couple of people die now and then. The answer to that is the free market. If enough children die then companies will stop buying food from these suppliers and go to their competitors. Simple. Get rid of the regulations!

Yeah! FDA did a wonderful job at finding the bad meat after a man died and others got sick. Good work, FDA! We love regulations like FAT must be on the top and then Cholesterol…. very useful regulations… We know where to find the fat content really fast thanks to the FDA. JZS’s head.

WOW. This meat culture we have is sick, that 36 MILLION birds died for NOTHING. That should sink in that maybe people should slaughter their own animals if they want meat so bad, and then they would take care of it, and there would not be this massive waste going on from time to time. What a pathetic waste.

It seems that every year there is some sort of “scare.” Spinach a couple of year ago, eggs, tomatoes last year, beef & pork within that past couple of years. Not to mention all of the “Flu’s” Swine flu, Sars, whooping cough, regular flu. Has it always been like this? I just can’t recall in my 40 years so many overblown Fear Tactics.

What happens when you eat out in a restaurant? Some people just don’t care or want to hurt people.
Better to be prepared and keep some Apple Cider Vinagar around.

If you REALLY want to lose your appetite, Google “Filth levels allowed in food by USDA”. You will never eat canned pizza sauce again. Fact is, absolute food safety is impossible to guarantee. Even so, the greatest threat to public health is large factory farming and processing operations, but the small producer will bear the brunt of any regulations. Just cook your food, people!

If you eat some bad food with the Samonella or E-Coli virii all you need to do is drink some Apple Cider Vinegar (not the white vinegar, the amber colored vinegar). About 1/4 cup if you ate just a little, about 1/2 cup if you ate alot. It will kill the virii in your stomach if you catch it quickly enough. If you wait too long it will get in your system. This has saved several vacations. Most people can tell when they have eaten something bad very quickly but wait to see what will happen. I take some Apple Cider Vinegar and don’t worry about it.

Boycott Cargill! It’s nothing but a mass NWO food production machine bought and paid for by guess who? Progressives. I’d rather raise my own turkeys or buy from a small farmer, if there are any left by the time the libs regulate the hell out of them.

“Cargill is an active proponent of free trade policies. It lobbied for China’s membership in WTO and for increased trade with Cuba and Brazil. Cargill strongly supports neo-liberal economic principles as part of its business model”
