San Fran Abortion Proponents Target Crisis Pregnancy Centers

San Francisco May Crack Down on Crisis Pregnancy CentersWhen it comes to legalities, San Francisco is an odd place. First, there was the bizarre, but now defunct, proposed circumcision ban. Now, some of the city’s leaders want to institute a crack-down on crisis pregnancy centers, which they contend are assaulting “women’s reproductive rights.”

San Francisco leaders are coming together to strategically clamp down on what they are calling “one of the most serious threats to reproductive rights today.” This dramatic call sounds like it is more suited to describe a rampantly-spreading disease than is crisis pregnancy centers, which generally counsel woman against having abortions. The Bay Citizen has more:

In a joint press conference with Supervisor Malia Cohen, City Attorney Dennis Herrera said the ”right-wing, politically motivated centers” use false advertisements to target vulnerable populations and can cost women valuable time as they decide whether or not to end a pregnancy…

The two officials both took action against the centers Tuesday: Cohen introduced legislation that would prohibit centers from making misleading statements about the services they provide, while Herrera took the first step toward legal action against a center he accused of doing just that.

San Francisco isn’t the first city grappling with these proposed restrictions. New York City, Baltimore and Austin all passed laws that prevent similar acts of “false advertising.” But, in New York and Baltimore, free-speech lawsuits have resulted and a New York judge blocked the state’s law last month (abortion proponents in New York are appealing the decision).

Cohen’s bill is entitled, the “Pregnancy Information Disclosure and Protection Ordinance.” The proposal would give these crisis pregnancy centers 10 days to correct misleading advertisements. If they choose not to, they would then be fined or given a court order requiring them to make necessary changes. Of course, this causes one to question who gets to define what qualifies as “misleading.”

For instance, consider the example that Herrera gave to illustrate the alleged false advertising. The Bay Citizen covers his description of the problem with groups like First Resort (a clinic he has taken particular issue with):

When women search for terms like “abortion” and “San Francisco,” a Google ad sponsored by First Resort appears, even though the organization does not provide abortions or referrals for them, Herrera said.

His argument here is very literally based on a keyword search. While First Resort doesn’t provide abortions, per se, it does provide advice to women who may be seeking them. Regardless of what actions the clinic takes — or doesn’t take, for that matter — the word is still applicable to their mission and values.

In a letter to the organization, Herrera asked the First Resort to change its advertisements and web site by the end of August. Considering the examples the city attorney has given, one wonders where this false advertising is being perpetuated. On the group’s web site, the image (see above) can be seen prominently in the middle of the page. Here, a woman who chose to end her pregnancy is quoted, as are others — one who chose not to do so and another who was undecided. In a statement published on the organization’s web site, CEO Shari Plunkett said:

First Resort rejects in the strongest possible terms any representation that our advertising misleads women.  We treat women with dignity and respect their right to choose. We welcome both Supervisor Cohen and City Attorney Herrera to tour our facilities and educate themselves about the services we provide.

We look forward to a robust discussion about the appropriateness of this legislation and urge them not to test the constitutional boundaries of free speech.

Pajamas Media’s Zombie reinforces the somewhat bizarre accusations from San Francisco officials:

If you scour First Resort’s Web site, nowhere do they claim that they provide abortions, or even advocate for abortions. In fact, quite the opposite: they use various code words like “values” and “adoption” which make it pretty clear they’re coming from a “keep the baby” perspective in their counseling…

So, based on basically no evidence whatsoever, the city of San Francisco is planning to sue a counseling center for false advertising, even though their advertisements are not false.

Yet, despite these revelations, The Los Angeles Times provides a quote in which the city’s attorney says, “First Resort is certainly entitled to advocate for ‘an abortion-free world’ to anyone who wants to hear it, but the center is breaking the law by misrepresenting itself as an abortion provider for the purpose of luring women with unwanted pregnancies into its office.” Breaking the law? But, with what evidence?

This bill is sure to inspire intense debate. Certainly, organizations should be honest about their intentions. But, considering the lack of false advertising evidence thus far, one can’t help but wonder: Are some in the San Francisco government targeting faith-based crisis pregnancy centers simply because of their opposition to abortion? While this may be an unfair assessment, stranger things have been known to happen.

    Follow the money. Abortion keeps the people at planed partent hood employed, the doctors and nurses do not donate their time so even though the business does not make money this is the individuals livlyhood. Abortion providers could give a rat’s rear end less about a woman or her right to choose (she chose to have sex so why should she kill another human). All they see coming through the door is a dollar sign. in fact it should be manditory that whenever a woman walks in that door that a loud kaching sounds like a chash register. I do not know which is worse the origanal goal of planed parenthood of preventing as many minorities from being born as posible or making as much money as they can from killing anyone they can.

      actually, you’re very misinformed. i believe in freedom. i dont believe its ANYONES business what a woman and her doctor decide to do as legal, consenting adults. The money from abortions IS LESS THAN 3% of planned parenthood’s income. they provide TONS of medical exams for women (pap smears, std testing, etc) for extremely low income women that would be unable to obtain those services otherwise. This whole “fetus is more important than the human” is irrational and ignorant. a fetus HAS NO RIGHTS OVER THE LIVING.

To take that life is murder. If the women don’t want the child, they can give it up for adoption. There are plenty of good families out there that can’t have kids of their own that would love to adopt a baby and they are willing to pay medical expenses to boot. The choice to kill a human being, nomatter how small, is murder. And that is no choice for a woman and/or a man to make. The baby didn’t ask to be the result of a one nighter. Grow up!       Planned Parenthood had it’s foundation in Margaret Sanger. To this day they still award the Maggie award after it’s founder. Sanger beleived in eliminating “human weeds” (Jews, blacks, Irish, Italian … -her words). Please Google this lady. She was pure evil. Hitler admired her plan and even put it into effect. Her plan was modified after she saw how Hitler’s received such bad press. She convinced black pastors (in order to get their mutual respect) to promote Planned Parenthood from the pulpit because she knew they were in control of their flock.       Please support your local crisis pregnancy center in any way you can. They are the only answer to those women who are looking for an alternative to Planned Parenthood and Planned Parenthood knows that. This is why they want them eliminated. If you cannot offer any monetary assistance, then offer your prayers or kind words to any/all volunteers because these places are run by the Grace of God.

      Have you ever read a biology textbook which discusses the differences between “the human fetus” and any “other” animal fetus?
      The point being, the “human fetus” is human. Having carried my youngest son for 71/2 months, spending half each day in bed the first 6 mos to keep from losing him, and the last month and a half, because he was kicking my backbone out of place so that I spent 6 1/2 hrs in repairs to my body, and 3 1/2 in surgery so that it would be my last pregnancy, I assure you; there is a value to that “fetus” which you cannot begin to understand unless you’ve lost 1 before birth or nearly so! Of course I didn’t “Have” to do this (and it was an unplanned pregnancy) but the joy that child gave when we took him home from the hospital, and through the years since, cannot be measured. We just lost his dad this spring, and through a rough final year of my husband’s life, guess who took off work to drive Mom from the local ER to wherever Dad was transferred? (he did the same when Dad had Open Heart 10 yrs before.) Guess who we called on whenever we had a Technological or electrical problem our other kids couldn’t understand? Guess who is Technology officer at a major factory, and keeps an entire shift able to work when they have major Tech problems?

      Ms. Cohen obviously has never studied anything about Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret Sanger, and her philosophy…locate in poor inner cities (heavy black or Jewish populations), offer free services – birth control, abortion, and “control” or snuff out the undesirables. Eugenics was the goal. Ms. Cohen herself was the target. I could never convince my Jewish grandmother of the insidious trap of Planned Parenthood. She would just praise the fact that they helped her so much with free birth control at a time when she herself could neither afford more children nor the pill. If you want to be informed, read “Grand Illusions The Legacy of Planned Parenthood” by George Grant. I read the first edition in 1988, and it has helped me all of these years to communicate clearly the tricks and traps of this murderous organization that hides behind its thin social justice veneer.

      It is a marvel that God has withheld judgement from SF; it must be the Christians that still live there and continue to pray for God to have mercy that have kept disaster from striking again as it did in the early 20th century. Darkness can never overcome the Light, no matter how hard it tries. The only way Darkness prevails is when the Light decides to leave. The more this city of fools tries to push out godliness, the more they hasten the day that 1906 may look like a hiccup.

    As a Christian it pains me to say this, but maybe they SHOULD encourage abortions in San Francisco…After all, anyone STUPID enough to live there…

    Do they really think we are that stupid? The only people who believe any of this hyperbole are the neophyte kool aid drinkers who bow down at the altar of government and progressivism. That’s the real problem with the enemy we face. To them, government and liberalism are their religion.
    They compare us to terrorists, but they are the ones who blindly follow their faith and idealism without regard to fact or truth. To them, progressivism is their religion. They kneel daily at the altar of MSNBC and CNN and pray to their great god of government Progressivism. Anyone who disagrees with them is labeled a heretic, terrorist, fanatic, evil. They will strap a bomb made of lies, demagoguery, hate, jealousy and misery around their waists and blow up our liberties. I have yet to face a true liberal in conversation and not have one blow up on me when I continue to present fact to their fiction. They can’t take it and eventually they resort to name calling and general hysteria then they go running to the courts and their liberal buddies to legislate their religous fanaticism on us. They are the baby killers.

    i think forced sterilization on any promiscuous woman would greatly reduce the need for female reproduction rights. pro abortion types are rabid in their desire to kill babies, and anti abortion types want to forcibly close down abortion mills. sterilization negates the need for compromise by both sides.

    “ASSAULTING women’s reproductive rights???” Seriously? That‘s what Planned Parenthood does by killing the women’s babies and some even messing up the women‘s bodies so they can’t reproduce. Pregnancy Clinics are the places where women’s “reproductive rights” are honored…Planned parenthood is totally messed up! EVIL!
