Protesters marching against the recent police-involved shooting of a young man — who police say fired at them and ran during a routine train fare check — became violent on Tuesday, hurling flares, smoke bombs, and a hammer at police. KGO-TV reports a motorcycle cop was injured when protesters tried to push him off his cycle. About 35 protesters were arrested at the end of the day:
The march began moving through the Mission and Castro districts around 6 p.m., and it came the same day investigators said tests found gun residue on 19-year-old Kenneth Harding’s hand — the young man who ran from police — indicating he fired the first shot at officers Saturday.
Police Chief Greg Suhr said the Seattle man fired the first shot at the officers, who shot back about nine times. Harding was pronounced dead after the chase in the Bayview neighborhood that began when officers approached him for not paying his fare on a light-rail train.
Harding was on parole for promoting prostitution in Washington state and was a person of interest in a fatal shooting in Seattle last week, authorities said.
During the protest Tuesday, some marchers carried a banner reading “They can’t shoot us all.” Others chanted, “How do you spell murder? S-F-P-D.” Video posted on YouTube also shows protesters shouting, “Cops! Pigs! Murderers!” while also carrying a sign saying, “Fu** the police:”
The group arrived at a Muni light rail station, where they overturned garbage cans and attempted to break ticket machines, KTVU-TV reported. Video footage showed a protester throwing a smoke bomb.
Esparza tells the news station that police declared the gathering of about 150 protesters an unlawful assembly around 7:45 p.m.
After the group left the light rail station, they moved toward the Mission Police Station, where they threw a hammer toward a window. The Chronicle reports officers were not hit in that attempt.
According to KGO, the mob also tried to splash the station with paint and threw flares. It also says protesters vandalized a Bank of America at 18th and Castro street.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Just cut the funding to the police, the residents obviously do not want them. Let’s see how far they can get without those same police they are protesting.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 12:52pmI’m not much into jumping onto bandwagons. The questions that sprang to mind here was, when has it become standard fare for police to board trains and check receipts of passengers? The story mentions “routine” I believe, when did this become routine.
Secondly, an observation. I, as a concealed carry advocate (and license holder), have seen countless cases of the “thin blue line” closing ranks and protecting its own come hell or high water, regardless of how heinous the officer(s) in question acted. There may well be two sides to this story, and we cannot assume that the protestors do not have a legitimate concern. If somebody killed my son/sister/wife/father/mother on a “routine” ticket check on a train, I’d be ticked off as well.
That said, the protestors need to chill out a bit. Inciting violence, even to solve unjust violence, is rarely a good idea. If they want real action, they need to stop marching and start showing up at the state house to demand a redress of their grievances.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 12:53pmEven though it would be fun to see the cops bust some heads here, I don’t know if we really want to tell police to break out their billy clubs against unruly crowds. Once the police get a taste of jack-booted-thuggery, it’ll be hard to reign them back in. It may not be long (hopefully) before WE are that unruly crowd. I‘d rather the police just stand out of the way when I’m carrying my torch and pitchfork.

I kind of like that idea. What if a wall was built around the city limits with only a few gates in and out. It’s already a sanctuary city, so why not pull the police and fire and declare that any Muslim that would like to establish Shariah law would be free to do so. Posted on July 20, 2011 at 1:57pmI strongly suspect that the right to protest means that you get to protest without being punished by the government. True, they need to not be violent, and to the extent that they are they should be arrested and prosecuted as individuals. But to believe that, because they have a different view than you or the government, that they should be denied the services that they also pay for, is rather fascistic don’t you think?
Nobody needs “shot” as everybody else is saying, and nobody needs to be taken out of society through other means. Protests and demanding a redress of grievances is an American right, every bit as valid and important as our other rights as listed in the Bill of Rights.
Prosecute the violent ones, but the rest have every right to protest and you have ever responsibility to respect that right, lest there come a day when *they* focus on taking away *your* right to protest.

(by the way; who designed those mob-resistant ticket machines?)

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 9:58amOf course, these are the same people that will be begging the police for help the first time they are victims of any type of crime. If the suspect shot at the police first, they have no choice but to return fire.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 10:07amI doubt that they would be so fast to call police for assistance if they were not intimidated into not exercizing their 2nd Amendment rights by those same police who are sworn to serve and protect.
Of course people are supposed to call the police for help if they need it. THAT’S THEIR JOB.
But hey, oaths don’t mean anything anymore in this country.
Cops think their badge & gun = license to kill/ abuse/ steal/ set people up. etc., etc.

Would this bunch blame the bystander for getting in the way of the bullet! I guess one just has to accept it, as typical liberal (convoluted) logic……………..MSSMUG

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 2:26pmHow do we know he shot first though? I’m not sticking up for the guy, but citing that he had powder residue on his hands in no way indicates that he fired first. The police can and do abuse people you know. This guy seemed like a piece of work and was apparently a bad person in general, but we cannot assume and give police a pass on shooting somebody just because somebody was a ‘person of interest’ in an investigation.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 10:00amYeah, all these losers haven’t worked a day in their pathetic lives. One would think the 1960′s would have produced enough filth for multiple generations, but here we go again; history repeating itself.
If these idiots just bothered to understand what happened in the 1960′s, they wouldn’t have to go thru all this senseless crap. Basically, the crap from the 60′s ended when kids grew up and realized how counter-productive it is to be so anti-American.
The madness never ends.

Really? I beg to differ. They didn’t grow up from the 60’s and certainly didn’t realize anything. Some became college professors and the rest moved to SF and Madison Wisconsin and continue to beat the same drum they had in 1960.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 11:01amWell, the majority of them grew up, I believe. The problem is, the ones that didn’t ended up becoming tenured professors. So, I guess both of us are right, to a certain extent.
I just never understood that mindset – even as a kid. I always knew right from wrong and I always understood what was fair and what was not. I can’t figure out how these losers intentionally play the fools. They think they’re being “cool”. But, you know what “cool” really is? Being a responsible American, holding down a job – that’s cool.
