San Francisco Voters Will Now Determine Legality of….Circumcision

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco voters in November will be asked to weigh in on what was until now a private family matter: male circumcision.
City elections officials confirmed Wednesday that an initiative that would ban the circumcision of males younger than 18 in San Francisco has received enough signatures to appear on the ballot. The practice would become a misdemeanor.
Supporters of the ban say male circumcision is a form of genital mutilation that should not be forced on a young child.
But opponents say such claims are alarmingly misleading, and call the proposal a clear violation of constitutionally protected religious freedoms.
The initiative’s backers say its progress is the biggest success story to date of a decades-old nationwide movement to end circumcision of male infants in the United States. A similar effort in Massachusetts last year failed to gain traction.

We get very worked up about a related procedure that Mohammadans and many non-Mohammadan black Africans do to the girls — why is doing it to boys OK, but doing it to girls is an atrocity? Do we really want to get into deep debates over where a religious practice might end and a cultural practice begins?
And you who are defending the specific right of parents to do it to a newborn baby — what about the brans new babies you see with pierced ears? Is that OK? Well, ear piercings can close up, so maybe that’s not the same; not so permanent. How about a tattoo then?

When I lived with my ex-boyfriend we got a P.O.Box in San Fransisco solely to receive a magazine that at the time was exclusive to that area. When we broke up the State of California, who does NOT recognize common law marriage, told us we had to go thru a “divorce” because due to having an address in the San Fransisco zip code we were legally considered residing together and the application for the box listed my last name as my ex-bf’s last name. We eventually got an annulment but we never should have had to thru that at all. I think it is ridiculous that a city gets such special treatment, if they want that much freedom they should petition to become a separate state.

I don’t think its so much the practice than it is where it comes from.(the Jewish people.) Seeing how Californians treat pro-Israeli politicians the other day, this really does not surprise me that much that this is happening.
