Santorum Accuses MSNBC Hosts of ‘Gotcha’ Journalism for Hammering Contraception Issue

Santorum on Morning Joe Discusses Media Pigeon Hole and Romney Death Star

The panel on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” has been hostile towards Rick Santorum during several recent segments. Despite this, the Republican presidential candidate appeared on the show Monday, 24 hours before the Illinois GOP primary to discuss the race and issues that have dominated the media coverage of his campaign.

Santorum earned an early chuckle from Scarbourough when he called rival candidate Mitt Romney a “big government heavyweight” in response to the former Massachusetts governor’s claim that his primary opponent is an “economic lightweight.”

After that, the interview became slightly less jovial.

When asked whether his campaign directed their candidate to back off positions on contraception, Santorum retorted that the issue was never about accessibility to contraception, but rather government mandates and the infringement of the state on the church.

“Well as you know Mika, the issue was not contraception, the issue was government mandated health insurance, and that to me is completely on message” said Santorum. “The federal government should not be mandating–first shouldn’t be mandating any health insurance, and specifically going after churches and saying that they have to do things that are against the tenets and teachings of their faith.

“You know the left is very, very keen on talking about separation of church and state, when they mean that the churches and people of faith can’t participate in the public square,” said Santorum. “Where is the separation of church and state when the government wants to force churches and people of faith to do things that are against their faith.”

Co-Host Joe Scarborough said that he and Santorum were probably on the same side during the Catholic Church controversy, but then brought up an interview the former Pennsylvania Senator had conducted back in the fall where he had emphasized his commitment to discussing contraception. As Scarborough began to ask if the candidate regrets saying that, Santorum began to chuckle.

“You laugh about it, but I can give you chapter and verse” Scarborough said before Santorum accused the former congressman, now MSNBC personality, of participating in typical “gotcha” journalism. Santorum clarified that he wasn’t talking about access to contraception but the destruction of the American family, and its statistical connection to economic concerns.

As Santorum continued to answer the question, co-hosts Brzezinski and Scarborough appeared to engage in an an odd on-camera huddle, raising the question of how much attention they were really paying to the Republican presidential candidate’s answer to their question.

Santorum on Morning Joe Discusses Media Pigeon Hole and Romney Death Star

Scarborough admitted that he has been critical of the focus on the issue of contraception, saying that since Santorum was on they wanted to address it, but appeared ready to move the interview on to other issues.

Santorum interjected.

“Lets just deal with reality instead of what the media tries to do which is to pigeon hole you and tell a narrative,” Santorum said in an answer denying that he goes out of his way to discuss the contraception issue, but rather that the principle focus on his campaign has been Americans losing their freedom.

Scarborough appeared offended by the answer, and asked Santorum directly if he felt that he was trying to pigeon hole or stereotype the candidate. Santorum responded somewhat light-heartedly, “well, yeah, sure.”

After circling the wagons once again on the issue, tensions appeared to ease, and the interview moved on.

Santorum discussed his campaign’s ability to win 10 states despite a campaign spending disadvantage, and pointed out his distinctions from opponents on climate change and big government spending.

“Rick Santorum just said he won ten states, and I just sort of–it’s jolting,” Scarborough presented to panelist Andrea Mitchell. “Here’s a guy who was sitting at two percent in Iowa a couple of weeks before the election, he’s (now) won ten states.”

“And done it with a fraction of the money and organization,” said Mitchell over Scarborough.

“With very little money, very little organization, and against the Death Star of American politics,” Scarborough said of Santorum’s success against the well endowed Romney campaign.

Santorum went on to discuss with the panel his stance on Afghanistan, his campaign organization, and whether anything has surprised him as a Presidential candidate.

You are completely right. Santorum does not understand how to be a true leader. The second he is challenged on any issue, he cries foul and claims he’s being picked on.

However, Santorum was right about ONE thing (when he endorsed Mitt Romney and stated “If you want a conservative as the nominee of this party, you must vote for Mitt Romney”)…

When it comes to contraception they should just say
“The federal government shall not force tax payers or mandate employers to pay for peoples Lifestyle Choices.”
It should be as simple as that. I’m not paying for your cigarettes, your running shoes, or your contraception’s.

      HIGH,
This Man was on MSM. These people try to chew every conservative up. I thought that he maintained his composure quite well. I did not see him on go on the offensive, I seen him recognize he was starting to be attacked and refresh what his stance is. He did not bow down and hes stood his ground. If we could only have more leaders with backbone like this,… Obviously He hit a nerve close to home as the host’s decided to change the subject as soon as possible. I give this man honors and respect for how for how he handled himself. After that point, they tried once or twice more and he came out sounding intelligent and respectable. I think that going into the lions den and coming out on top says something about his character.

Now I have to admit, I dont know much about his fiscal policies, but look at our options. a Newt who was forced to resign, O’bummer Jr. or Paul who would let our Embassies and soilders get attacked at every point on the globe that is not U.S. soil, I think I would vote for a man that could hold his own against enemies. And yes MSM is the enemy of the Republic.

ENCINOM: It’s “gotcha” journalism when the media repeatedly asks the same questions over and over, even after they have been consistently and repeatedly answered the same way. Santorum has repeatedly said that the statements the media keeps focusing on are his PERSONAL opinions and beliefs, NOT what policies he’d put in place if he were elected. The media asks (Republican) candidates “how do you feel about…“ and then when the candidate answers honestly they turn it into ”this is what you’d do if you became president.“ THAT is ”gotcha” journalism, folks… taking something said in one context and turning into something totally different.

Santorum has been very clear about his PERSONAL beliefs, and I give him great credit for that honesty and openness even if I disagree with him. He‘s said repeatedly that he does NOT believe in cramming his personal beliefs down other peoples’ throats. I give him high marks for that too!

I am both pro-choice (meaning people should be able to make their OWN choices, whether or not that includes abortion) and pro-contraception, but I have enough self-confidence to NOT attack people who disagree with me, and I certainly DON’T want the government telling me what to think or believe, whether I agree with the government or not!

If I accept that the government can cram MY views down other peoples’ throat, then I logically ALSO accept that the government can cram someone else’s views/beliefs down my throat. Is that wh

But to go on MSNBC the DAY BEFORE a big primary makes me wonder what type of idiot is running this guys campaign.

Conservatives (of which I am one) do not care for Mitt McCain – I mean Romney – so we shudder every time Rick is put in one of these situations.

GOOD GOD man – have a clue!

Don’t worry. More people are reading about this interview on the Blaze than people who actually watched it! Besides, calling out a punk like Scarborogh will only endear him to the base.

Not all us Americans out here are stupid. OK many are, but not all of us!

Some of us KNOW about the scripted questions and we HATE HATE HATE them. We KNOW what Obama does, the typical politician does, and we HATE it.

I’d rather have a real person answer a question and even blunder it than the phony, stiff, cardboard, lying-a** PUNK we have in the WH right now! ANY day of the week! Tired of being conned and lied to–aren’t you???

JUST – Yes, I agree. A lot of us like Santorum’s honesty and “real person” that comes through – which leads to more trusting that he‘ll do the right thing and he’s not giving some political lie just to win votes. We don‘t care he isn’t “polished” or whatever…..was Abraham Lincoln? No – his statements were loved and remembered….known as “honest Abe”.

Why bother with them Rick? Nobody watching that channel will ever vote for you anyway. Obama gets nasty every time a FNC reporter asks a question, he knows if you watch FNC you’re not going to vote for him.

Maybe not watchers of FNC but, I bet over half the people who work at FNC (Shepard Smith, Bill O’Reilly, Megan Kelly) voted for this nightmare.

The CuppaJoey show is Comedy Central Supreme.
NEVER watch it. Joey has drunk too much socialism coffee.
Joey is actually morphing into Chrissy Matthues. SCARY!!!
      Idiots are not useful.

hairy – Rick has no chance of becoming president, you know that, so it doesn’t really matter what channel he plays on. Santorum is such a waste of time……….

I think going on these shows says you have nothing to hide. I think it shows courage that he is willing to go on there, knowing that he may get slammed with false or dumb questions. So in a way, it can be a good thing.
