Santorum Announces 2012 Run: ‘We’re In It To Win It’

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) — Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, once the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, said Monday he’s seeking the GOP nomination for president, vowing he’s “in it to win.”
Santorum, a favorite among his party’s social conservatives, chose to confirm his plans during an appearance Monday morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America” at the banner-draped site he chose in the western Pennsylvania coalfields for his formal announcement.
He has enjoyed strong support in the past from the anti-abortion rights bloc in the Republican Party, and he enters the race four days after former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney formally declared his candidacy. Speculation remains strong that former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann will jump into the race along with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Minnesota Sen. Tim Pawlenty and businessman Herman Cain and, who already are in. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and entrepreneur-entertainer Donald Trump have said they’re not running. There also has been speculation that former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who sought the nomination in 2008, is considering making another run.
In the network interview, Santorum accused President Barack Obama of having a weak foreign policy, saying he doesn’t feel he has stood up sufficiently to Iran and asserting he has done too little to speak out against Syrian President Bashir Assad for the violence there.
Santorum, whose immigrant grandfather worked in the Pennsylvania coalfields, has already hired a small staff and has made frequent visits to early voting states New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina.
The blunt-talking conservative lacks the name recognition and fundraising organization of his better-known rivals, but the two-term senator’s advisers are counting on social conservatives who have huge sway in some early nominating states and have yet to settle on a favorite candidate.
So far, those social conservatives are weighing already declared candidates such as Pawlenty and potential contenders Bachmann and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Santorum, a lawyer by training, had been laying the groundwork for a presidential bid when he lost a bruising re-election bid to the Senate in 2006. His opposition to abortion, gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research makes him an appealing candidate for conservatives. But his sometimes abrasive style alienated voters in Democratic-leaning Pennsylvania, and they replaced him with Bob Casey, an anti-abortion Democrat.
Santorum’s policy positions align with national conservatives who now are looking at many of the expected candidates with skepticism.
Romney’s changes of heart on gay rights and abortion do little to help his second presidential effort. Gingrich is twice divorced. Huntsman, who worked for three Republican administrations, nonetheless accepted Obama’s offer to be the U.S. ambassador to China.
Santorum, 53, has his own hurdles to overcome: He has been out of elective office since 2007 and lacks the robust fundraising or personal wealth of his likely rivals.
Earlier this year, he established a presidential exploratory committee to start raising money and joined the first – though ill-attended – Republican presidential debate in South Carolina. He is expected at next Monday’s debate in New Hampshire, which is likely to include more of the expected field.

Ya Think????
Bill O’Reilly is FOR:
1. Forcing all Americans to get a National ID card to stop illegals. This will just create another huge government bureaucracy and privacy intrusion and yet another card we would annually have to PAY FOR TO RENEW after forking up a ton of info on ourselves. Soon DNA/medical records, etc. will be on that ID card – just like it or will be on military ID chips. Police pull over people for traffic violations and READ THEIR CELL PHONES, imagine ALL the infor they can get with a National ID card.
2. For terrorist reasons, allow government to limit the Miranda rights on ALL Americans for ANY REASON which allows Fascist thugs to throw you in jail “for awhile” no lawyer for speaking out or whatever. Obama DOES NOT RECOGNIZE radical Muslims as TERRORISTS but his entire administration calls veterans,
3. O’Reilly completely MISSED the Obama “Ipod message” which is not that technology is BAD. Obama wants to CONTROL THE INFORMATION ON all tech gadgets including Ipods and the internet so “people” don’t get “confused/upset” by opposing views. Obama Internet kill switch plan approved by US Senate

My responses:
1 Tried to make teaching ID mandatory when “No Child Left Behind” was being formed – No idea what this is/will have to research.
2 Compares homosexuality to bestiality/pedophilia – I do NOT care about this topic.
3 Was against helping people in Hurricane Katrina, saying in effect “if you get screwed, it’s your fault for not being prepared enough. You knew it was coming” – I AGREE. They should have INSURANCE. If you want to to build a homes on sinking swamp land (sinking more EVERY YEAR), you take the risk – NOT American taxpayers. Katrina was just another bailout just like Wall Street. NOTE: Don’t bail out Haiti/Japan and other countries with money we borrowed from China either.
4 Going off the point above, he also wants to make US Weather Service data restricted, since private companies can try to sell it. – I AGREE. Copyright the information and SELL IT information to private companies and SUE them if they RE-sell.
5 Unlike the Bush administration proper, Santorum came right out and said “Iraq has WMDs.” Oops!
OOPS to Collin Powell, Hil Clinton, etc.
6 As said, doesn’t believe in privacy rights. Government in your lives, folks. = This concerns me but I don’t know the specifics.

I’m not trying to convince your Santorum is a terrible candidate. I‘m pointing out the reasons he’d lose in a landslide (like in his last election, where he lost by about 10 points) in a national campaign. Coming out and saying “Get rid of the NWS, Katrina victims deserved it, Intelligent Design should be mandatory, and I don’t believe in rights to privacy” is anathema to a successful campaign.
“ANYONE” but BO sounds great, but not just “ANYONE” can win. Social conservatives like Santorum or Palin cannot win, and I wouldn’t want them to because they bring no fiscal solutions to the table and want government in our lives instead of out of it. Libertarians like Ron Paul can’t win because they have no popular support. Romney has the best chance because of name recognition and at least has a proven record for legislation, but I doubt he’d be more popular than BO.

From an interview with USAToday in 2003:
“And if the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything. Does that undermine the fabric of our society? I would argue yes, it does. It all comes from, I would argue, this right to privacy that doesn’t exist in my opinion in the United States Constitution, this right that was created, it was created in Griswold”
He also says, among other things, that you canNOT do whatever you want in the privacy of your own home, because people will do deviant things. He calls it the “right to privacy lifestyle.” According to Santorum, if you have privacy rights, you’ll abuse them and become a deviant, undermining the moral fiber of America. So the US needs to legislate what you can and cannot do.

Yep:
U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum should reimburse $100,000 to the Penn Hills School District for taxpayer money used since 2001 to cover online charter school tuition for his children, four school board members said Thursday.
The senator will not respond until the board makes a formal request, said Santorum’s deputy chief of staff, Robert Traynham.
“He has done nothing wrong,” Traynham said. “The Penn Hills School District for the last four years has paid for (Santorum’s) children to attend the charter school and have seen nothing out of the ordinary. They have basically said, ‘This is OK.’ ”
Questions over his residency prompted Santorum to announce Wednesday that he is withdrawing his five school-age children from Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School in Midland, Beaver County. The No. 3 Republican in the Senate, Santorum owns a $106,000 home next door to his wife Karen’s parents in Penn Hills, but he and his family split time between there and a $757,000 house in Virginia. Santorum’s annual Senate salary is $157,000.
“He‘s admitted he’s not a resident. I’m going to put up a motion for him to pay back the entire amount,” said Penn Hills School Board member Erin Vecchio, chairwoman of the local Democratic Committee.

I would imagine, since the house is next to his in-laws, that they care for the child frequently. I also doubt the child is only going to school when he is in town. Which means that the child must be living there 9 months out of the year. So, somebody is living there!

Biggest issue I see is that he seems to be running as a social conservative, not a fiscal one. Technically this should make member of the Tea Party movement antsy (although it reality I doubt it). More importantly for a national campaign though, is that independents are pro-fiscal conservatism, but generally sway to pro-social liberalism. Santorum has been part of several events that will turn these voters off.
-Tried to make teaching ID mandatory when “No Child Left Behind” was being formed

Posted on June 6, 2011 at 2:25pmsantorum is a good man and a conservative. too bad the media were against him during his senate run. i would think the msm will go all out now that he has announced. conservatives have to call out the msm everytime they try and slam a conservative. santorum has to tell them they are liars to their faces in the coming interviews.

Santorum is not what this country needs! his far right social views turn off the independents, and i have never even heard of him being associated with fiscal conservatism, or his being a constitutionalists, his candidacy is just more establishment GOP nonsense..
Ron Paul is still the best choice in this race…

-Compares homosexuality to bestiality and pedophilia
-Was against helping people in Hurricane Katrina, saying in effect “if you get screwed, it’s your fault for not being prepared enough. You knew it was coming”
If you read your Bible, you will see that homosexuality, bestiality, are comprable -they arell all a sin, and are a sexual perversion. Just because Lady Gaga, Madona, and the rest of the ilk on MTV are all for homosexuality, does not make it good. Gays have a life expectancy about twenty years younger for a reason. They live a sick life style
Study a little history from the days of Calvin Coolidge. See what he did when folks in congress wanted to help the poor farmers of Texas. Not everything is fixed by the federal gov. When it is, we create a class of people who just stand there with their hand out. Hope this is readable, I just got my eys dialated, and can not see real well

The Bible pre-dates our great constitution. Marriage is between a man and a woman. The founding fathers knew well that homosexuality was wrong. George Washington saw to it that a lieutenant was removed from service when he attempted to have a homosexual relationship with a private. The majority of our founding fathers were Christians, and while many had differnet views, and came from a myriad of denominations, you will not find any writings from the founding fathers giving rights or credibility to homosexuals. Check out that list that was read in front of congress back in 1963 showing the 45 goals of communist for the take over of the U.S. Notice that number 26 was to make homosexuality seem normal. Why when it was read aloud, did not one member of congress stand up and object? I can tell you why, they knew that it was wrong. Once again, letting Madona and Lady Gaga set the morality of a nation is a :bad thing”. Every nation or civilisation in world history that went the homosexual route died within two generations. Again- I apologize for spelling – my eyes are still dialated (eye doctor, not wacky weed).
