Santorum Criticizes Obama Administration Condemning Iranian Nuclear Scientist Killing

At a campaign stop at a diner in Greenville, South Carolina, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said the U.S. should not have condemned the killing of Iranian nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan. He was killed last week after bombs attached to his car by passing motorcyclists exploded. Santorum believes the administration’s approach does not reflect a hard line on stopping Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

According to the AP, he said: “Our country condemned it. My feeling is we should have kept our mouth shut.”

Responding to a question in Greenville, he said he supports missile strikes to stop its nuclear program, if Iran refuses to submit to inspections.

“If these are people who are developing a weapon to be used to either destroy the state of Israel or to spread terror — a reign of terror — around the world, we shouldn’t be sitting on the sidelines and letting it happen,” he said. “They cannot have a nuclear weapon, because you, in Greenville, will not be safe.”

The Obama administration took several opportunities to deny involvement in the attack. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said: “The United States had absolutely nothing to do with this.”

At a press conference with the Qatari Prime Minister Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said:

“I want to categorically deny any United States involvement in any kind of act of violence inside Iran. We believe that there has to be an understanding between Iran, its neighbors, and the international community that finds a way forward for it to end its provocative behavior, end its search for nuclear weapons, and rejoin the international community and be a productive member of it.”

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta also vehemently denied U.S. involvement in the killing. AFP reports:

During a meeting with soldiers at a Texas military base, Panetta said the United States was “not involved in any way, in any way with regards to the assassination that took place there.”

“I’m not sure who was involved. We have some ideas as to who might be involved. But we don’t know exactly who was involved,” he added.

The administration also condemned the killing – which Santorum took issue with – and went so far as to call the victim “innocent.” State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland on Wednesday said:

“We’ve seen the reports of the death of the Iranian scientist as a result of an apparent bombing. We condemn any assassination or attack on an innocent person, and we express our sympathies to the family.”

As Santorum suggested, the words coming out of Washington raise questions about the extent of President Obama’s commitment to ensuring Iran does not develop a nuclear weapons capability. If Iran is developing weapons of mass destruction, combined with the Islamic Republic’s statements about destroying the State of Israel, do nuclear scientists then fall into the terrorist category acceptable for targeted killing? Is a focused covert war preferable and less costly than all out bombing?

The Telegraph explored the issue: Is it moral to kill Iran’s nuclear scientists? Though it’s unknown who exactly was behind the assassination, The Telegraph wrote:

The Israelis believe that anyone who knowingly participates in developing weapons of mass destruction or terrorism should be aware that these are not risk-free activities. Iranian scientists know full well that electronic switches are used in nuclear triggers, and that enriching uranium beyond a certain percentage is not for the production of medical isotopes. And they accept the considerable financial rewards involved. If there are questions about the morality of killing such men, there are questions about the morality of their work in the first place…

They work for a regime that has explicitly threatened Israel (and by implication many ambient Palestinians) with such a weapon.

Speculation continues to abound regarding who may have carried out the attack. TIME magazine believes it was the Mossad, while Israeli President Shimon Peres says to the best of his knowledge, Israel was not behind it.

Israel’s military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai while stressing he didn’t know who was behind the killing, wrote on his Facebook page: “I will definitely not shed a tear for him.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says his country has “credible” evidence it was the work of the CIA. Iran also sent a letter to the British Foreign Office claiming the MI6 was also involved.

In the cloak and dagger world of international espionage, it may be years before anyone reveals how the hit occurred.

Again I ask if we are truly in a war on terror like you seem to believe. Then why would you not feel empathy for the Iranians? A man was brutally murdered in the street. The word sympathy was not used empathy means that you have an understanding of what they feel. As I have stated in many of my posts. Please go see your local recruiter if you want war with Iran that bad. The brave young men and woman in service to this country currently have done more than their fair share already.

So, because many CITIZENS are good, we should not have a strong military presence in the region to assure our interests?? (oil supply – which they profit from)

Are you old enough to remember gas rationing? Mile-long lines for gas? Gas on odd/even days? 20% interest on mortgages? Hyperinflation? Jimmy Carter?

We are seeing Jimmy Carter 2.0 right now. obama hopes to inflate away our debt, rather than pursue a responsible fiscal policy.

When Mom’s fixed income is made worthless due to hyperinflation, are you ready to support her?
How about the millions of elderly, disabled, and others on fixed incomes?
Ready to pay $15 a gallon for gas? $20 for a gallon of milk? $20 for that cheeseburger at Mickey D’s?
$375.00 for Levi’s? $5,000.00 for that iPhone? $2700 a month for electricity? $20,000 a month for your mortgage? Make certain you don’t have an ARM!

Ever heard of MINES? They are these things that you put in water so that boats cannot use that water. Because, if they TRY and they bump one of the mines they go kaboom!
Dolphin equipped w cameras, miniature drone submarines, etc. are viable means of searching for mines.

Or, we can just bury our heads in the sand and pretend there is no evil in the world and that all is hunky dorey. But then that is what got us in this situation to begin with.

We have aircraft carriers. Why do we need bases? Aircraft carriers are safe from IEDs, suicide bombers, mortars, and crazed gun men. Our planes are very advanced and hard to shoot down. So our presence can stay in the air. No country in the world will act us with one of our carrier battle groups close by.

Remember, no other country in the world has a navy like ours. No other country in the world has a carrier battle group. We have 11 4 acre bases that can go 6 miles off any coast in the world safely with no need to rebuild or give candy bars to the locals. The American armed forces arent feared because of our ground troops. They are feared because of the air strikes and naval cruise missile strikes.

Fear is not the best or only motivator. While our air and naval power does wield the power of fear, it is our ground troops that make us loved.
When you spank your child you don’t swing your belt from 10 feet away then walk away saying your child deserved it. No, you punish your child then immediately reinforce how much you love them by hugging them and explaining why their behavior was wrong. Then you keep working with your child until their behavior is modified and they learn to behave without you. With the eventual goal of rearing a responsible self sufficient honest adult.

Yeah that was great strategy you sure put me in my place. Whats happening in Afghanistan we invaded and the guy we were looking for was in Pakistan and after we finally kill him losing many brave soldiers we don’t have the sense to leave. Yes, the US could lay Iran to waste, even without nuclear weapons. We could reduce Iran’s ability to sell oil to zero in the time it takes for 1000 cruise missiles to strike from wherever they are launched.

But don’t think the US has the advantage in the gulf, for all our seagoing power. Google Millennium Challenge 2002, a war simulation in the Persian Gulf, and one of the most elaborate war games the US has ever undertaken (google it). In the simulation, the rogue Arab state (presumably Iran), sunk the entire US battleship group in one day with a combination of small, fast ships firing cruise missiles, shore launched cruise missiles and suicide attacks, both by land and sea.

We can kick their rear ends, but it won’t be because of a battleship group in the Persian Gulf.

Iran really can shut down the Gulf with mines, fast missile carrying boats and so on. But to clear the Gulf, we’d basically need to lay their entire country to waste.

That‘s in America’s best interest? And to do otherwise is weakness?

That would certainly be a departure from a century or two of US foreign policy. That’s the kind of crazy stuff we expect from North Korea and Iran. Thank God that Santorum has no chance to win the presidency. He sounds like one of those Imams in Iran.

We have proven over and over again, that our foreign policy is either to support big business at the expense of the developing country or throw a war. ABBEYGIRL and SOYBOMB, has nothing whatsoever to do with religion. Has everything to do with keeping a nuclear weapon out or the hands out of the hands of IMADAMNNUTJOB, who is not only bent on the destruction of Isael but also the US, and he’s not opposed to risk killing himself and the Iranian people to meet ALLAH, who is a false God to begin with.

If you think for one minute that the wacko Iranian leadership is not developing a nuclear weapon and will not use it, you are greatly mistaken and do not understand the radical Muslim mentality, a fatal mistake.

What have we learned about pre-emptive wars? Mostly that they are based upon false assumptions and pushed by special interests who benefit from perpetual war.

What evidence do we have that IF they develop the bomb, that they WILL use it. You have to understand the mentality of the Iranian regime. They are thugs and are scared that the people of Iran will revolt against them. So the Iranian regime makes the USA/Israel the ‘boogeyman’ to keep the people distracted. Besides, Israel has enough nukes to wipe out Iran. Like i said, they are scared to lose power. The Iranian regime is not suicidal and therefore would NOT use a nuke against Israel.

Just like in the USA, the Iranian regime benefits from these political skirmishes. The true threat to the Iranian regime is freedom of their people and their desire for a greater future for their children.

If in fact, Iran has developed or close to developing a Nuclear device, THEY WILL USE IT! Ahmadinajad has said repeatedly that even if millions of his people die in the conflict, if Israel is eliminated, it will be worth it. What do we do? You answer that one.

As far as the Strait of Hormuz is concerned, with so much of the world getting oil from the Gulf region, Ifv Iran tried to shut it down by attacking ships passing through, the retribution would be swift and devastating for all of southern Iran. By the time the rest of the oil users are through, Iran couldn’t throw a toothpick at anybody.

The coming of WWIII? When the entire Eurozone collapses, gas prices hit 8 to 10 dollars per gallon because of closeure of the Strait of Hormuz , food prices skyrocket worldwide (Especially in poor countries), one or two devastating natural disasters hit almost simultaneously further disrupting the civilized world, well then desparation takes over and all hell breaks loose. I pray that none of this will happen but we are already near the tipping point.

Yeah please tell me how Iran could attack us.

They dont have a missile that can hit us.
They dont have a navy that could get to us.
They dont have a air force that could get to us.
They dont have enough troop transports to make a land invasion even if they some how got all of their troops to lets say Mexico.

I can predict what you will say. “They will build a nuke and give it to the terrorist”. Honestly if the terrorist could get a nuke and get it into the United States it would have already happened. Could it happen yes, but very unlikely. If Iran does get a bomb, they are going to try and use it against Israel. Hence why we should unshackle Israel and allow them to defend themselves. If they feel they are going to be attacked, they will strike. Something about reading history allows me to know this insight.

fact: no stores are allowed to sell nukes.

However, countries can sell anything they want to other countries. For instance, we just recently sold Saudi Arabia a ton of fighther jets. No, there is nothing stopping iran from buying a nuke from china or russia.

Another thing to consider. Our country is shutting down their central bank and not allowing them to sell oil via money exchange… I can easily see a scenario where they trade oil for nuke (barter) in order to avoid the money problem

Shouldn’t take long to condemn terrorism, should it?
      Unless you are for terrorism.
A lot of men and women have given their lives fighting to destroy the organizations trained to use tactics like this. Yet so many on this site would rather slam the President for condemning terrorism than admit he did the right thing and that Santorum is just trying to gain some support from the chicken-hawks in the tea-party. Anybody else condemns this and they get commended. Obama says it and he’s a secret Muslim.
You can now stop wondering why more and more Americans are rejecting the tea-party because they percieve the tea partiers as racists.
President Obama gave the order to kill OBL, yet was criticized by the Glenn Beck crowd for any number of illogical and insane reasons, especially curious because seemingly no one except the comedians criticized President Bush for bragging that he “no longer wasted time worrying about finding Osama bin Ladin”. I was among those who were were worrying about finding him and we were disappointed seeing our Commander in Chief in a youtube video mockingly searching for bin Ladin under his oval office desk. I was at Fort Delaram FOB when he pulled that stunt. No one challenged his patriotism for that insult to our troops. Yet this President is attacked for condemning an act of terrorism. In a nation with no domestic petroleum capacity, dependent upon the middle east for oil, we are. Ot only reliant upon their oil to keep our economy running, but we are helpless against any reduction in oil supply. Thus we are left with no option BUT to guarantee that supply by any means, which means military readiness and presence in the region. Now, once we have excess capacity to supply our own energy, we can certainly discuss a laisse faire policy. Until then, it is optimisticly naive to think otherwise.

If elected President, Ron Paul will work to implement the following common sense reforms:

      * Enforce Border Security – America should be guarding her own borders and enforcing her own laws instead of policing the world and implementing UN mandates.

      * No Amnesty – The Obama Administration’s endorsement of so-called “Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, will only encourage more law-breaking.

      * Abolish the Welfare State – Taxpayers cannot continue to pay the high costs to sustain this powerful incentive for illegal immigration. As Milton Friedman famously said, you can’t have open borders and a welfare state.

      * End Birthright Citizenship – As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be granted U.S. citizenship, we’ll never be able to control our immigration problem.

      * Protect Lawful Immigrants – As President, Ron Paul will encourage legal immigration by streamlining the entry process without rewarding lawbreakers.

As long as our borders remain wide open, the security and safety of the American people are at stake.

What we need is a President with a real Plan .

      A PRO-ENERGY PRESIDENT
As President, Ron Paul will lead the fight to:
      * Remove restrictions on drilling, so companies can tap into the vast amount of oil we have here at home.
      * Repeal the federal tax on gasoline. Eliminating the federal gas tax would result in an 18 cents savings per gallon for American consumers.

Rick is the only one that will step up and take Israel’s enemy Iran out! I salute him for that. We need to just overlook his big gov’t big spending ways because he will defend our ally. Santorum is ready to take it to the infidels and I’m with him. We need to take the Middle East back for Christ! Time to quit playing nice with these Muslims. Besides God stands with the Jews because they are his chosen and we’ve been commanded in the Word to fight for them!

I agree with Santorum. I mean, if (when) U.S./Israeli involvement is discovered, mealy mouthed politicians will further expose the liars they are.

      “We CONDEMN it.”

      later . . .

“Well, yeah. We did it. BUT WE STILL CONDEMN IT!”

I mean the administration sincerely believes they can get more votes if they lie rather than take a stance, like Santorum, that we believe is right.

I say, be assertive about it, be aggressive about protecting America and Americans, and LEAD according to American values and principles. The principles of right and wrong; good versus evil.

FYI there are other Counties in the Area that have a vested interest in delaying Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions …….Namely Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have the Money and Infrastructure to do what is in their National Interest, which is to Not have to go toe to toe with Iran as a counter balance, which will be a very very expensive endeavor. So is it not cheaper to hire a couple of goons with a motorcycle.

It is possible the Israelis pulled this assassination off. But it helps to understand there are other players in the area that have an interest that Iran’s Nuclear ambitions are hampered. IMO Iran sees itself as the areas Historical power center, the Persians look down on the Arabs, therefor the Arabs have a reason to thwart Persian push for Hegemony.

Achmadinajab(sp?but who really cares how we spell that evil little man’s name) and the mullahs have vowed to destroy Israel and America.

Why wouldn’t they think the nuclear weapon is the perfect way to go. Our federal government under this administration will always defend the Muslim instead of Israel if indeed Israel was responsible.

None of us know who planted the bomb that killed that scientist and we probably will never know but I doubt he was innocent.

Rick, that statement goes towards “plausible deniability”, or that should have been the only reasoning to make it, Since Obama, our chief appologyst made it the context is somewhat in doubt, and questionable. Therefor I’m going to cut you some slack “O grandson of Red Communists” by saying if you never heard of “plausible deniability” then you’ve given another reason why you need to keep the job you now have.
Ron Paul knows what plausible deniability is, Paul 2012.

I’m not convinced that Israel thinks they can stop Iran from acquiring a Nuclear Bomb. The best they could do with a strike is to place a temporary stop to the program. The question the US and Israel are asking themselves is what will the cost be for a Temporary stoppage and will the bill be to high?

@ Rebel, the difference is we are not sponsoring terrorism as Iran loudly and proudly does. Iran and its leaders have vowed to drive Israel into the sea and like it or not as THE leader of the free world we have an obligation to ourselves and allies to defend and protect our interests. You Ron Paulophiles need to pull your collective heads out of the sand.

How cowardly of our gov’t to point fingers at our allies as we vehemently deny responsibility. If we didn’t do it then sit down and shut up. The denial was made implicitly to continue to stir developments in the middle east and encourages Iran to do something stupid.

Should Israel be attacked by anyone, Iran in this case, when Ron Paul is president we will honor our treaty with them and defend them with all our armed forces. Why can I state this with such confidence? Because the public outcry would cause Congress to make a declaration of war, something it hasn’t done since WWII BTW, and President Paul knows that means war because it’s constitutional.
Why can’t you anti-Paulists wrap your brains around self evident truths as simple to grasp as this?
Really, that was a serious question, why would you even begin to believe that a man who stands for the rule of law and the constitution would be an oligarch like Obama and Bush are/ were?

We were attacked and our freedom challenged by the Japs in WWII, we killed a million or so, and we were free.
