Santorum Joins Chorus Criticizing U.S. Apologies in Koran Burning Incident

Obama Administration Slammed by Santorum, Gingrich, Krauthammer and Others for Apology in Koran Burning Incident

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has joined the growing number of Americans uncomfortable with President Barack Obama and the Defense Department’s extensive apology for the unintentional burning of Korans by U.S. forces at a NATO base in Afghanistan last week. Santorum says the action was a mistake that demonstrates the president’s “weakness.”

Obama has come under fierce criticism from Republicans and media commentators for his reaction to the burning of the Korans. AP reports that military officials say the incident in Afghanistan was a mistake. Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific security affairs, met Friday with Washington-area Muslims where he was videotaped apologizing multiple times on behalf of the Department of Defense during a brief speech during prayer services at the ADAMS Center in Sterling, one of the largest mosques in the country.

The exchange infuriated conservative Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer, who lambasted the White House and Defense officials during an appearance on Fox News Friday for their response to the incident. Krauthammer stated that while a single apology from a commander on the ground was warranted, the extent of the apology from officials in Washington was “embarrassing.”

Santorum was interviewed Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” and NBC’s “Meet the Press,” and AP reports that Santorum says that rather than saying he was sorry, Obama should have only acknowledged that what happened in the incident was wrong. The former senator from Pennsylvania says to apologize for something that was not an intentional act “is something the president of the United States should not have done.”

Violent anti-U.S. riots have engulfed Afghanistan since news of the incident first broke early this week. Hundreds have been wounded and dozens killed, including four U.S. soldiers.

In an interview with Piers Morgan on CNN Friday, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich slammed the Obama administration (President, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and U.S. commander John Allen among others) for their apology. Gingrich said he would not say sorry before Afghan President Hamid Karzai apologizes for the deaths of Americans in his nation, or until Muslim officials offer condolences for the burnings of churches in Africa and the Middle East:

Henry Blodget of the Business Insider questioned the religious justification of Afghan rioters in column released Sunday entitled “Does Mohammed Seriously Say It’s Okay to Kill People Who Throw Away Old Korans?”

“What happened, at least judging from initial news reports, is that Americans wanted to stop some Korans from being used to pass notes at a prison… so they threw them away.  And the trash was then burned.

That’s not a symbolic gesture. And it’s presumably hardly the first time that old Korans have been thrown away. (How else are you supposed to get rid of them?)

The treatment of the trash probably did not enter into the minds of the folks who threw the Korans away. And they probably had no idea how this treatment of old books might be viewed.

So the insult, if any, was inadvertent.

But, despite an apology from the President of the United States, the retribution for this inadvertent insult has now led to four murders and counting.

Murders.  Human beings intentionally shot and killed.

No matter what moral universe you live in, thinking that an act like this somehow justifies premeditated murders is outrageous. “

A faux “apology to President Karzai on behalf of all Americans” by Kira Davis has since gone viral on youtube, and seems to encapsulate the resentment from many conservatives to the Obama administration’s profuse regret for the Koran burning incident. The Washington Times reports that Davis is one of the 21 Top Urban Game Changers, urban voices that are using social media, from blogs to video, to speak out on behalf of conservative Afro-Americans.

      SEALWIFE…
I pray for the safety of our soldiers every night.

Islamists will look for any tiny reason they can find, to kill your husband. They hate Americans. He knew the risks when he signed up. As of now, we are still an all voluntary army.
You don’t negotiate with terrorists. If your husband is actually in the military, you would know this.

Whether anyone in the media will admit it; We are at war with Islam. They want us all converted to their sick, perverted religion or they will murder us all.
Being “outraged” over the burning of the Koran is fine, but “murdering” innocent people over the burning of those pieces of paper, is not fine.

When you apologize to those heathens, in their evil feeble minds, they feel as if we are justifying their killing of innocent people. Therefore, it’s as if we are giving them permission to murder us, every time their books are burned.
Our Muslim President will never demand that the Islamists apologize to us, for their murdering of innocents.

They are so full of hate, that they don’t have the good sense to just get a new Koran. If my Bible was burned right in front of me, I would just go buy a new one, and pray for the lost soul who burned it.

LeadNotFollow-Of course he knows the risks, BUT Americans are supposed to respect faith. He has enough issues he is dealing with there, he should not have to pay for the stupidity of others, we don’t burn holy books in countries we occupy, its incredibly stupid and arrogant. I understand it was an accident, but there is no reason to place him and others in more danger than they already are in. There had not been 1 American killing in almost a year in the town Americans were killed this weekend. He understands the risk and he happily takes them, but I am his wife and I can be pissed that a STUPID act places him in even more. By the way, my husband has spent 7 tours in the middle east, he will tell you most Muslims are good and kind, we aren’t at war with their religion, we are at war with the terrorists of their religion.

Hey SEALWIFENYC, stop with the claptrap. Operators like your husband are NOTORIOUS for shooting indiscriminately in engagements, so enough of the tender hearted mercy for the Afghanis CR@P.

And Rose-Ellen, yes, you can tell me to love my enemies. BUT you have no right to tell me my ENEMY is really my FRIEND. I’m really tired of you atheist snobs trying to throw that foolishness in my face. Study the Christian tradition a little closer and I think that you will be surprised to see just how closely tied to WAR it really is. (Let me guess, Rosie, now that you are so Christian-conscious I bet you also support teaching Creationism in schools? huh?)

I want the US OUT of Afghanistan. I am severely distrustful of this prolific use of “Special Warfare” And the trend is not MACHO, it is subversive and frightening. You armchair generals need to think a little harder about just what this operator-oriented doctrine means for US Foreign Policy instead of just drooling over their high speed gear. Get the H3LL out of Afghanistan! Somebody ask that dopey Nobel Peace Laureate WHY ARE WE STILL THERE?

Islam is far from being a great religion of learning, tolerance and peace. Muhammad declared that if other books confirmed what was in the Quran then they didn’t need them. And if the books did not confirm what was in the Quran they didn’t want them. So the order was Burn them! The Muslims burned libraries all across North Africa and the Middle East. They burned the library of Alexandria… the largest library in the world at that time. It probably included original copies of the Bible and other priceless manuscripts.

MOMRULES. Yes!! And Islam cannot survive freedom. The Quran cannot survive intense scrutiny and critical investigation. In this technological age, Islam’s days are numbered. Although they can hijack Western technology to use against the West, the foundations of Islam are rotten to the core and cannot stand… will not stand.

Furthermore, Islam is an old cult. We have many cults around us. Christ is thankfully, available to all. And many who were locked in these cults have been released by Christ. That‘s the ’good news’ about it all.

TRON. The violent nature of the fringe and radical Muslims is a direct result of their seeing the handwriting on the wall… Islamic values are no match for Western values. Their desire to destroy the West is an attempt to overcome this inevitability. They know it.

Islam can only exist in a totalitarian, national coccoon. There is no such thing as a national coccoon anymore. The current surge in what seems to be a tide of Islamic hegemony is nothing more than a dead cat’s bounce.

There is no such thing as a national cocoon .that means us too.We wern’t minding our own business on 9-11. We had offended the people there with military bases in arabia ,propping up dictators for cheap oil, cold war policies etc.all of which harmed and kept the people victimized by brutal regimes. All they had was their backward religious mores and a growing resentment of our policies which harmed them but benefitted us.there is no such thng as a national cocoon. osama the freedom figher showed us. he supported the arab spring and was a natural ally as he opposed saddam and iranian fundamentalist tyranical regime.he was NOT a fundamentalist but he was a muslim who believed he was a freedom fighter.islam needs a reformation and propping up brutal dictators is not the way to lay the groundwork for that. nor is invasion and occupation[unless the people themselves have risen up against a dictator].You can catch a fly with honey…-people in afghanistan did not need shock and awe -no matter how backward they are.One sided support of zionist occupation pits them against the west too.

They already killed either two or four Americans depending upon whether you trust the USA government or the Taliban.

They claim that these killings were justified as retaliation for the quran burning.

Do we now get justified retaliation for the two to four dead Americans? I’ve got to admit that it angers me and tempts me to smear feces all over one of these a**holy books and head down to the nearest Mosque.

I’m not scared Muslims will assault me, but I am terrified that my own government would arrest me for this. I know that if I burned a quran in public they would put me in a cage for certain on some trumped up arson charge or something stupid.

I don’t see how rubbing feces on a book can be illegal, though. It‘s sad that I fear my own government and I really don’t think they would care whether I actually broke a law. They would still find a cage for me.

I thought the Republican Party was supposed to be a COALITION of fiscal conservatives and social conservatives.

MITT ROMNEY DOES NOTHING FOR SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES.
    -ran as a pro-choice governor
    -signed legislation limiting gun ownership
    -grew government with Romneycare

I can see why fiscal conservatives want Romney, but NO REPUBLICAN CAN WIN IF SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES STAY HOME ON ELECTION DAY!!!

Obama can’t win if he loses Pennsilvania (Santorum’s home state)
Obama can’t win if he loses Catholics by a wide margin (Santorum’s faith)
most importantly…Romney can‘t win if he can’t excite social conservatives to show up and vote

Fiscal conservatives will vote for Santorum to protect their wealth from Communist Obama
BUT SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES GET NOTHING FROM ROMNEY

If social issues are lost and should not be considered as some are claiming…
WHY WOULD I EVEN VOTE REPUBLICAN?

I’m with Newt — plus sign of more “weakness” and sounds like it gives them even more “reason” to kill more troops or whatever other violence they LOVE to do for the glory of Allah. This is so assinine, it’s beyond words. That, along with Hillary telling the Muslims how much America loves them. I don’t know, the anger out here is really building up. If he is re-elected, I hate to think of what may happen – most of us are trying to practice self-control, praying and hoping this nightmare will end by next year. It’s still a long time until then.

We’ll never get an apology from the middle east for anything, including all of the beheadings they’ve done. It’s our misfortune to have a wuss occupying the WH. If he needs to apologize to anyone, it is the parents of our soldiers who have been killed over there in a war that we have no intention of winning. He also needs to apologize to the American people for being such an incompetent a$$.
