Santorum on Obama‘s ’Jesus’ Tax Talk: ‘I’ve Read the Bible & I Must Have Missed That Passage’

Rick Santorum and Orrin Hatch Respond to Obamas Jesus Tax SpeechWe recently explored how conservative and liberal Christians view Jesus and his potential opinions on a wide-range of issues.

Yesterday, during his National Prayer Breakfast address, President Obama joined the chorus and made his own claims about Jesus’ purportedly liberal views on taxation. So far, the response to his insinuation the Christianity’s Messiah would support upper-income tax increases has been intriguing.

(Related: Obama at Prayer Breakfast: Jesus Would Want Us to Tax the Rich)

Sen. Orrin Hatch’s (R-Utah), for one, had an extremely comical reaction to Obama’s comments on the matter. In a floor speech on Thursday, the devout Mormon, had an important reminder for Obama.

“In 2008, the president declared that his nomination was the world historical moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal,” Hatch said. “Someone needs to remind the president that there was only one person who walked on water and he did not occupy the Oval Office”

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah)

But the congressman wasn’t done there.

“[Obama] suggested to the attendees that Jesus would have supported his latest tax-the-rich schemes,” he continued. ”With due respect to the president, he ought to stick to public policy. I think most Americans would agree that the gospels are concerned with weightier matters than effective tax rates.”

Watch his speech, below:

Then there was GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum who also railed against Obama’s claims on Jesus and taxation.

“He made the claim that his policies of taxing the rich is authorized by the Bible, that he is doing what is biblically called for by taxing the rich, by having the government tax the rich,” Santorum said at a campaign stop in Fallon, Nevada. “Now, I’ve read the Bible, and I must have missed that passage.”

He went on to say that the Obama administration “attacks religion” and that it attempts to “cloak” itself in religion. Santorum told his audience that the administration does this “in order to take your money.”

GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum (AP)

During Obama’s National Prayer Breakfast speech, his exact words about Jesus were as follows:

“And I think to myself, if I’m willing to give something up as somebody who’s been extraordinarily blessed and give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy, I actually thinks that’s going to make economic sense.

But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’ teaching that, ‘for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.’”

This is yet another example of theological and political views clashing on the public stage. Obama’s comments, while startling to conservatives, are shared by many others in America’s religious left community.

Well, here we go. Obama’s election tactic – sound as much like a conservative as you can. Use the same language as the right wing has always done in the past. Make yourself look and sound like you are farther to the right than your opponents. Will it work??? Are Americans really not using any brains? Has the left effectively destroyed not only education, but the ability to think at all? Film at 11 (that’s 11 for November).

Why would He? We are the salt of the earth. If we fall, it will be because America broke its covenant with God and we Christians were asleep or too carnal “to fight the good (spiritual) fight” and take it back. We are being literally engulfed by forces of darkness since Obama took over. They are choking the life out of us. May God have mercy on us.

This is what happens when you have Presidents who use the Bible to form their opinion on public policy. Many people interpret the Bible differently, and then you will have other people(usually the person’s political opponent) say they are interpreting the Bible incorrectly.

(If you have read this before its because I used this yesterday. I am using this again because it fits.)

      As I see it these are the foundational differences between the Left and the Right;
Conservative; God wants to reveal himself to me the individual, through His word, and He has a specific plan for my life.

Liberal; God is revealed through the Church’s teachings and God has a plan for you through church attendance and church works.

Conservative; Salvation is an individual relationship with the savior.

Liberal; Salvation is a collective/national state.

Conservative; God and the Holy Spirit enlightens the individual’s study of scripture.
Liberal; Understanding of scripture is the purview of enlightened church leaders and handed down to the masses.

Conservative; Jesus changes the world one heart at a time. When your heart is given to Him, the world is changed for you for eternity. Then Jesus will come back and He will establish His kingdom on earth.

Liberals; Jesus laid out His teachings and once we get everyone on board with the man centered enlightened view of those teachings, man will usher in utopia. We will build the kingdom ourselves so Jesus can then return.

      (Continued)
Conservative; Our rights come from God and government is established to secure those inalienable rights for the people. Good government leadership stems from a humble acknowledgment that it is responsible to a higher authority. Government should govern in the fear of the Lord.
Liberal; Our rights may come from a god, but since he isn’t here at the moment, the elite and most enlightened amongst us will interpret how those god given rights will be administered. Government is the highest authority. The people are governed through fear.
All you bloggers should know that this is what we fight against. Most liberals and conservatives were raised with their particular views, so attacking the person or the program is to attack who the person is at the core. Change ones thinking about the foundation and you change the whole structure.
Read your bible, but first ask God to enlighten it to your heart through His Holy Spirit. Oh yeah. His Spirit is only given through faith in His Son.

Obama’s theology, like his politics, is nothing more than secular humanism.

No where in Scripture does God give the authority to government to force anyone to be charitable. Theft through threat of government violence is still evil.

When Jesus said “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s” he did not say that Caesar owns everything he demands. We are to render to Caesar only what he is lawfully owed. Charity belongs to God. Caesar does not have the authority to force us to render to God what is God’s.

Christians should not be encouraging “the poor” to benefit from government charity programs. That wealth was stolen from others. Insisting “the rich pay their fair share” is preaching a false gospel.

Once again you miss the mark.
This is what happens when you use a collection of snappy phrases out of some book on your shelf thats called the Bible to support your world view rather than conforming your world view to the Word of God.
Illuminate God‘s Word by the light of the Holy Spirit that inspired it and you get God’s truth. Illuminate it from your own human light and you get a false doctrine. EVERY TIME.

For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. (Romans 10:1-3)

For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” Where [is] the wise? Where [is] the scribe? Where [is] the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? (1 Corinthians 1:18-20)

I think God makes His case pretty plain, unless of course you bring your own agenda to the table..

Among Christianity alone, there are many denominations that all “believe in Jesus” but have minor differences here and there. Which is why people go out of their way to say, “I’m Protestant, I”m Catholic, I’m Evangelical” etc

The way it sounds, you‘re saying Obama isn’t a “real Christian”(How ironic, are you judging Obama’s faith?)

It‘s been proven that he was in Wright’s church for a long period of time. Well his church just had a different view of Jesus that he was taught. His interpretation of the Bible is just different from some other people and it’s not only “Black Liberation Theology” that talks about what Obama is talking about. I had a friend many years ago who attended an Evangelical church, but felt that the Government should have a big role in giving money to the poor. He got into a big debate with another friend who felt that it was the church’s and communities role to help the poor.

The best way to remove this nonsense is for President‘s to not use scripture when creating public policy ESPECIALLY for people who don’t have the same views as them.

      Once again you demonstrate you own bias against Christians on this site with;
“The way it sounds, you‘re saying Obama isn’t a “real Christian”(How ironic, are you judging Obama’s faith?)”
I did not, nor do any of my copious postings ever make the assertion that Obama is not a Christian. I am not in the “Obama is a muslim” camp because frankly his standing, whether with the Lord or with Allah, is not my issue nor do I know the man well enough personally to say. And its not mine to judge regardless.

I fully agree that in his public statements Obama uses Christian ideals to suit his own purposes. His use of these phrases is very consistent with Reverend Wright’s teachings of Liberation Theology.
“Collective Salvation”, “Social Justice Theology”, as well as his constant misuse of scripture, taken out of context.
Personally I don’t mind his use of scripture to support policy, especially when it exposes his liberation theology tendencies. Better the false christs coming out in the open then the ones working in the shadows. Yes I will go on record and state that I believe Liberation Theology is a man made false doctrine from the pit, designed to keep hearts enslaved to racism and hate.
In the end I personally would prefer a president that conformed his policies to God’s truth, rather then try and twist Bible passages to fit their policies. Which was my original point.

Obama fail in his mis-interpretation. It takes a little work (wink to Modisbest), but the passage he refers to in Luke 12:48 deals with biblical knowledge and knowledge of God‘s will in one’s life. To those who have been given much (knowledge of the Savior and the Word), much is expected (to live a holy life and preach the good news to the lost). It is a PLAIN interpretation. Read it yourself. Luke 12. I’ll try and summerize it here: Beginning with verse 13, a man in the crowd says to Jesus ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me’. Jesus replied ‘Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?15 And He said to them, Take heed and beware of covetousness, for ones life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.’ (funny Obama didnt mention that verse, which exposes the liberal mindset!). Jesus then tells a parable relating to the rich man who stores up grain for himself, but neglects the things of God, and depicts him as a fool because God takes his life, his riches go to someone else, and his soul ‘is required’ of him (i.e. judgement).
The point? Don’t be envious of a rich man. God will provide your needs if you put your trust in him (vs. 22-34). Beginning with vs 35, he describes in a parable how one should be ‘ready’ for the Lord’s return. Peter then asks Jesus if the parable applies to them or all people. Jesus then recites another parable, where the servent represents a believer (or one who claims to be o

This is meant to say that the true believer will take care of the servants (feed the Word of God), while the non believer, or phony, will care about worldly things, get drunk, and not care for the servants. Accordingly, the true believers are praised, the servant who gets drunk recevies a ‘severe beating’ (the worst level of hell), while the ‘one who did not know, but still did what deserved a beating get a light beating (less torment in Hell). So Jesus answered Peter’s question by saying the parable applied to tru believers and those who claim to be, and details the punishment destined for all people, believers or not. Finally, he ends with the Obama quote, which clearly, in context, concerns people who claim to be believers, not rich people who jhave be given wealth.

You speak of spiritual matters but from a natural perspective. No-go, friend. Christians ARE supposed to be able to recognize a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Jesus enables us to hear HIS voice and discern the voice of the Thief — and all his minions. That is why the Spirit abides in us. Otherwise, we would be easy prey for our enemy. Thus what you say is incorrect. Moreover, when a Christian speaks the Word of God there is an anointing, and you, Moderation, will not “sense” it if your own spirit is dead. Nevertheless, even nonbelievers like Bill Maher can tell that Obama is no Christian, so I am surprised you are blind to such a glaring fact. Obama has CONSISTENTLY shown by his words and actions that he is a wolf, not a sheep.

Here’s the truth: Barack Hussein Obama is a rabid commie (atheist) and materialist. He is also a Muslim by birth, and has never publicly renounced Islam, which tells me he fears/respects the religion he was born into. It remains to be seen if he becomes a practicing Muslim. Either way, he is very busy doing the works of the evil one both here in America and all over the world.

Again, the Blaze doesn’t show a post where I apologized to Maccow, maybe this one will show.

I simply said maybe I misunderstood you, but judging by you saying that he just grabbed “some book off his shelf” and “used some lines to fit his world view”, that it sounded like you were saying he didn’t consider himself a Christian.

I also wrote about what would happen if a Muslim became President and started talking about how Allah impacted his view on public policy, how would you feel then? What if after every speech he said, “May Allah bless the United States of America.”

The main point is, the best way to keep things like this from happening, is for Presidents to make logical, well informed, well thought out decisions, instead of looking at the Bible for policy. That is the way to have TRUE freedom. By saying you want a President to consult scripture or prayer when creating policy, you are then admitting that you want to force people to conform their lives based around your beliefs….which this country wasn’t founded on.

The problem is, the hypocrisy in all of it.

Cain, Bachmann and Perry all said something about God telling them to run. All three of those people are now out of the race and were considered some of the biggest jokes on the stage.

If one of them were to go on and win the Presidency, they would talk about their “calling from God” and how it “strengthened their faith” and this country would eat it up. Then when they’re shown that nobody likes them, they will simply say, “Well it‘s all part of God’s will” and people will eat that up too.

      Look at Cain specifically.

He got lambasted in the media because all of those accusations. If God told him to run, and this country is in as bad shape as it is, so much so that God told him to run, shouldn’t he be willing to stick it out despite all of the media crazy ESPECIALLY if the accusations are untrue? Wouldn’t God lift you up, and people’s prayer lift you up beyond all of the remarks to help re-establish what our country was away from a “wolf in sheep’s clothing“ President who is the ”anti-christ”(as he gets called by some people)?

Maybe all of this is part of your God’s will? Maybe your all loving, all knowing, all powerful God wants America to fail?

Charity (alms) should be done in private. Charity should not be done for a tax deduction. Charity should be done because it is the right thing to do. For if you do this to enrich yourself then you have already received your reward. This I know is in the Bible.
We are told to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar‘s and God what is God’s.
Caesar is who has the responsibility to protect the sovereignty of its peoples.
God and God’s people are responsible for the care and charity of those in need. No place in the Bible does it say (command or even suggest) that the government is to take the place of God given responsibilities. When the rich man in hell asked for water he was not told that the taxes he paid were to pay for the needy and poor.
I believe that those that are blessed with much do need to give more. Charities that help the poor, sick and needy would welcome these gifts and God will reward them in Heaven.

      ———–
The MSM distorts everything. A true Christian might say that he/she felt led of God to run — and they may sincerely err. If they use the word “tell” it is in that sense.

I haven’t heard Perry speak about his faith, so all I can say is he’s an idiot who wasted his opportunity to be the Repub nominee. Cain attends a liberal church, which in Christian jargon means “a place where a false gospel is preached,” so I didn’t see him as a Christian even before news of his alleged 13-year affair broke out. Bachmann said she had a “sense of assurance” about which direction to go. She seemed genuine. She might’ve been wrong — or not. The fact that she withdrew doesn‘t mean it wasn’t God’s will for her to run or win. One thing I did notice was that she tried to dodge the question about whether she would appoint a SCOTUS who believed in gay marriage. She finally answered that as *president* her litmus test would be the Constitution. Liberals are not painted into a corner by the media, while Repubs often have to choose between losing their soul or saying what is right in God’s eyes. Maybe she “failed the test” — with God that is. I’m speculating about what took place spiritually, but I wouldn’t call it hypocrisy. (CONT.)

@Takeback please plagiarize away I appreciate the flattery.
@Jrook You serve a very weak god who must be incapable of getting you to know him. The God I serve reveals Himself to all to the degree that humans can possibly know Him. I don’t claim any superior knowledge of my God then that which is available to anyone for the asking.
My knowledge and my faith are not superior to any, and I often feel it is rather inferior to most. But the God I serve is superior to all and there is no other God before Him.
God‘s word does require His Spirit to enlighten it to the believer which is why many a natural man won’t see much in it. God’s Spirit is given only by faith in His Son. Not my rules I just live by them. The last most important part is you have to buy into the whole in order to get everything out of it that God has for you. If you follow after your own desires you will get what you want and sadly what you deserve. Follow after the will of God and you will get Mercy (that which you don’t deserve) and Grace (You won’t get that which you do deserve).
Or you can keep pocking fingers at God’s servants, feel superior about yourself, and miss out on the better things God has for you.

Your apology must have gotten dumped but I accept it was sincere.
I notice you accuse Christians of “Judging” quit a bit so I will share something I recently discovered.

      Jesus teaches judge not less you be judged and He also teaches about pointing out the speck in your brother’s eye. I have recently realized that when you throw these verses in someone else’s face, you have just violated them yourself. I will explain;
In judging someone for pointing out the speck in your eye, rather then dealing with the splinter in theirs, aren’t you in affect judging there to be a speck in their eye?
      And then
If you accuse someone of judging you aren’t you also condemning them for having been judgmental towards you? Isn’t that condemnation in and of itself a judgment? When you say “who are you to judge” aren’t you yourself judging?
Jesus is the only one able to use these as judgements of another without being a hypocrite.

My point is, Jesus seems to have set up much of His teaching so that His admonishments can only be used by me on me. Jesus is looking to do His will in me and He wants to do the same in you. He doesn’t ask me to fix you, Jesus wants me to point you to Him, the only one that can restore the spiritually dead back to life..
      Just food for thought
      God bless

Obama – misquoted the Bible again.

      New International Version Luke 12:48
But the one who does not know he was doing wrong and breaks a law that is deserving of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Obama needs to heed his own warning – and don’t talk about translations here – nothing to be translated – This scriptures clearly talks about the punishment of a crime – If you commit a crime and did not know it is a crime and it wasn’t a serious crime – your punishment should be minor. However, if you’re a Business owner and you knowingly steal from your employees your punishment should be harsh.

In Obama case – if you give weapons to drug lords in order to create a killing spree so you can pass a law to outlaw guns – you are going to pay a heavy price on judgment day. If you purposely turn your back on Israel “the apple of Gods eye” and you’re the Leader of the free world – you are going to pay a very heavy price. If you organize occupiers to disrupt a free election and one person dies from it – the blood of that person is on your head – just as though you killed them yourself.

In the Media case: If you report that the Arab Spring is a Jeffersonian Democracy and portray it as a good thing – knowing that it has dangerous consequences for Millions – the Blood of the innocent is on their hands. Self Gain as the intent – t

I sort of missed the part of the Bible too, where Christians are commanded to falsely accuse their neighbors (Iraq) of crimes, then are commanded to go in and kill a million their citizens, install a puppet government and make sure government contractors get paid in the hundreds of billions before we pull out our forces and say oops, we got another one wrong. Yes, Santorum supported that war and would still have our forces there if it was up to him, he’s stated this as recently in the debates. I’m really tired of of these dirt bag politicians wearing the Christian label to get the conservative values vote. I guess dropping bombs on as many Muslims as is conceivable is a conservative, Christian way to spread Jesus’s message of love thy neighbor as thyself, according to ol’ Ricky boy. Wake up America, another war monger is not what this nation needs, you will stand before God at some point and his Judgement will be upon you, we will not be judged as a collective, or standing behind Rick Santorum’s decisions.

      Hey Guido,
You do realize that had we not gone to Iraq and Afghanistan, the fighting you so wholeheartedly oppose probably would have taken place on US soil instead of over there? Not sure if you remember a morning in September of 2001 when WE were attacked. I’m just saying, better there than in the US. The people who led/are leading these terrorist efforts want Christianity and freedom eliminated. There is an ideological war going on and it is between 2 groups of people: 1) those who want to oppress others and 2) those who want people to be free. Middle Eastern countries preach peace and equality and all that, but only if you bow down to Allah and live under their pretenses…ie, Sharia Law. You need to understand these extremists are KILLING people to make that happen, and if people don’t follow suit, they want to KILL more people. Our purpose in Iraq was two-fold, search for WMD, and get Suddam Hussein out of power so he would stop massacring innocent people.

SO, back to the Bible: how about the parts where it tells us to defend the helpless and the widows, those who can’t help themselves? Or about how we are constantly taught to stand up for righteousness? Sometimes, standing up for what‘s right isn’t pretty, especially against an enemy hell-bent on destruction. And when our President uses the Bible to further his political message….shame on him. The Bible, and message of Christ is for all people and is not a tool for political advancement. #DON

@goggles34 I’m not really talking about Afghanistan, which is what you’re referring to. I think that war was justified up until the point where we toppled the Taliban regime but decided we’re still not going to leave, 10 plus years now after the fact.

Iran and many other muslim dictatorships are run by some pretty evil people, but that is the system of government they have decided on. They are sovereign nations, we have to respect what they want for themselves. If they want something different they can take care of that themselves just as we did during our revolution.

As it regards Iraq, I can‘t even believe we’re still talking about WMDs. Let me make this clear, this is not theory or hypothetical, we lied about the WMDs, WE knew they weren’t there before we invaded (Thanks to Julian Asange for revealing this to us), yet we still invaded a sovereign nation where a million innocent citizens were killed in the process. That’s not exactly protecting the helpless and the widows. If we don’t respect a nations sovereignty, why should they respect ours?

And I‘m sure I won’t be able to convince you on this, but our nation does NOT stand for righteousness anymore even though we are constantly being told it does. If our country believes lying to go to war, and committing mass acts of violence against peoples, without being provoked is “righteous”, then truly the cup of delusion does over run in this nation.

Unlike Santorum I have read that passage in the Bible but I am presently reading through the Bible for the 10th time. So, I think it probably stands out more for me. As for Obama’s comment, once again he uses his own interpretation instead of how Jesus meant things to be. Jesus was all about service. We are to be servant, even slaves to Christ as he was a slave to us dying for our sins. We are to be willing to give freely of our time in reaching out to those who are without Christ in their lives. We are to also be sure to help those who are suffering and in need. We are to give charitably, even sacrificially as all we have was given to us by God and we should be willing to share that which was given to us. We should also be willing to go into all the world helping to reach all people. This is the true meaning of “much is expected.” Obama continues to stick his foot in his mouth trying to present himself as a Christian. He has stated that his eternal salvation comes from his collective salvation. Nothing could be further from the truth that is the true salvation which is accepting Christ as your Lord and Savior. There can be no other substitute for a relationship with Him. His ideologyis his message and it is a false message.

i would submit that it‘s time for cheap suit political hacks to explain where in Scripture Christ called on the government to confiscate as much of individuals’ earnings as possible and redistribute them in order to garner political support from this or that group; in other words, since the Left makes the ‘Jesus wants the government to do this’ claim, the onus is on THEM to back it up

Didn‘t Jesus say something about giving Ceaser what is Ceaser’s and giving God what is God’s? Sounds like he understood about how government and spituality should merge. The rich wouldn’t only be the ones taxed but everyone. At whatever level they can afford. Probably meaning there should be a way to voluntarily gift the IRS and not have taxes be a “have to or else” sort of thing.

I seem to have missed that passage as well; the only part regarding taxes Jesus was specific on was to “render unto Caseer what is Caseers; and to God what is God’s.”

BS. you lefties have re-written the bible to meet your fascist agenda. the bible never talks about the government taking care of people, rather if you want to eat, you work.
