Santorum on the Romney Family Dog Story: ‘Issues of Character Are Important’

Rick Santorum on Sunday hit rival Mitt Romney on the long-simmering issue of the Romney family dog.

The story of how Romney once strapped the dog in a kennel to the roof of his car during a road trip has popped up from time to time on the campaign trail. A top Santorum adviser referenced the incident on CNN last week, saying: “I’m not sure I’m going to listen to a value judgment of a guy who strapped his own dog on the top of a car and went hurling down the highway.”

Santorum, asked whether the issue deserves to be an election issue, said it was a matter of “character.”

“All I would say is, you know, the issues of character are important in this election, and we need to look at all those issues and make a determination as to whether that’s the kind of person you want to be president of the United States,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Santorum also said he’s not proud of his support of former Republican-turned-Democrat Senate colleague Arlen Specter’s 1996 bid for president. Santorum has come under fire for his past support of Specter, including in Specters’ 2004 Senate re-election bid.

“I was his colleague in the U.S. Senate he asked me to stand with him,” Santorum said. “That certainly wasn’t one of the prouder moments I look back on…I certainly knew that Arlen Specter was going nowhere and I certainly disagreed with a lot of things that he said,” he said.

“It was something I look back and wish I hadn’t done,” he said.

The Catholic religion is amonst the most moral in teaching, but its perishoners are not amongst the most adherents of religious teaching. Growing up I found what appeared to be an inclination for catholic girls to be most accommodating in helping a lad lose his virginity.

“Crategate” is what it’s called. It’s a blockbuster issue, one that boils down to judgment, character and PETA issues. Democrats simply love the issues the Republicans are running on: dog care and birth control.

Rick Santorum! OK, you’ve just about ruined your chances with me to vote for you. I’m getting so sick of the little games you keep playing, ruining the GOP’s chances for winning in Nov. You think you’re getting back at Romney, and I’ve never been in his corner, but I’m getting so sick of your whining, I‘ve decided you aren’t what I want either.

In fact, it’s become very clear, most of us who reluctantly came to your side, did so thinking you were a good Christian. I’ve come to the the conclusion, you might consider yourself a Christian 2nd, and a Catholic 1st. You talk more about what your church teaches in their beliefs and very little about what Christianity teaches, and I’m getting tired of it.

So, after being for Mr. Cain, then Mr. Gingrich and thinking Newt wasn’t gonna make it, I decided when it came down to the final vote, I’d vote for you over Romney. SORRY, CHANGED MY MIND.
You’re whining is driving me crazy and I see other flaws. Romney gets my vote now.

      DEBT

If little Rickie did spend alot of time in western PA back in the late 80‘s and 90’s he would think nothing of Romney placing his dog in a car carrier above the station wagon. I grew up in this area and it was quite common to see dogs in back of pickup trucks with no leashes and harnesses. I personally thought nothing of it.

On one side of Santorum‘s mouth we hear of his concerns with Romney’s character and those standing on the other side of his mouth we hear of his repentance for supporting Spector.

…Mr Santorum, the team player mentality is a character flaw our elected officials have endeavored to practice and maintain in contrast to the wishes and betterment of the constituency. Your team player practice is a charatcer flaw….you made a choice to stand with those in the Senate admittedly against your principles, and yet you seek to label Mr Romney as short in character.

Try doing coast to coast on Navy orders with four kids (some teens) a dog, three cats, and a cockatiel. The dog hated traveling and yodeled when not medicated. You get there the best you can. It was years ago, we all did the best we could, if he was in a crate with a windscreen he was probably more comfortable than the kids. He also didn’t have to hear a thousand times “are we there yet”? Santorum is the only one of them I have given money to. Still, I really think that trying to make an issue out of the dog being moved by a cartop carrier is a bit desperate. To say that Romney “strapped his own dog on the top of a car” makes it sound like the dog was not even in a carrier. Also, I would rather have a guy in office who “strapped” his OWN dog to the top of a car than a guy who strapped ANOTHER guy’s dog on the top of a car.

What would happen if they explained..

The gold standard and what exactly it means to Americans if we had competing currency?

Would Israel really be destroyed if our troops who really arent near them anyways pulled back?

What happens if we cut 5 departments of government?

How would American companies react to a Ron Paul as president?

Would getting rid of the patriot act, ndaa, obamacare, and other freedom destroying bills be good or bad for us?

What happens if the war on drugs ended?

What would happen if a president pushed for term limits?

What would happen if the TSA wasnt fondling our children and grandparents?

What would really happen to our economy if we cut a trillion dollars in overseas spending?

What would happen if we were out of the UN and the UN was out of the US?

What would happen if congressmen had to put their name down on a vote to send our troops overseas to fight?

What would happen if a president was elected not with big bank money but money from regular Americans.

What if we dont elect someone who does those things?

How much has RP given? Probably unknown because he’s not one to use it for his own personal gain. Charity is only truly charity if it’s done anonomously. When people publish what they give it’s self-serving. It’s makes people, like you, say, “gee he must be a good guy”.

Anybody but Romney? Are you sure? At age 19, Mitt Romney delayed education to voluntarily serve a two-year mission in a foreign land. While there, he had a near-fatal accident, due to an inebriated Catholic priest. Any other candidate might have returned home, or spent an effort on a lawsuit, but not Romney; he persevered to completion of his mission.

While earning a bachelor’s degree, an MBA and a law degree, Mitt spent nine years as an unpaid intern for his father’s gubernatorial campaigns. Any other candidate might have used a successful father’s career to launch his own, but not Romney. Instead, he built Bain Capital from scratch. Any other candidate might have been less willing to take such risks, but not Romney. He leveraged his education and capital, and it paid off. Concurrently, he and his wife raised five sons, and he led his local church congregation, counseling the membership in matters such as marriage, loss of loved ones, loss of employment, etc. Any other candidate might have grumbled at an additional 25 to 30 hours per week of work, but not Romney. He willingly served.

While Mitt was CEO of Bain Capital, the daughter of an employee went missing in New York City. Anybody but Romney might have simply called contacts in New York and wished the father luck. Instead, he closed Bain and took all employees to New York to aid in a successful search. Any other candidate might have sought praise for this act, but not Romney.

…and Romney spent 42 mil of his own money,…and if you examine that fact I you may say he is trying to buy the Presidency and have an argument…I would say he is willing to pay his own campaign expenses and the very fact that he has so much to give says something about his level of success and his confidence.

There is a place for Dr Paul in the government–even the Presidents cabinet,,,I come from Texas i know his personal history, but i dont want a doctor running the economy. i hate to argue with someone named luke but you are stepping in it with that ‘never passed a bill’ comment. First of all, check out the legislation he has sponsored or co-sponsored – it links to library of congress if you want to dig deeper
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_legislation_sponsored_by_Ron_Paul

Also, your ron paul comment shows your ignorance about what is wrong with this country. you think a businessman president can fix things but the problem is much much deeper. ron paul stood for the constitution and liberty for 20 years and in so doing has taken stands on issues that most republicans have tried to avoid. If it were true that none of his bills have been passed – THAT IS A BADGE OF HONOR. he has been beating down the doors of the republican establishment and has gained more traction every year.

You say you dont want a doctor running the economy – but you dont realize that this country has cancers that are about to kill the patient. Yeah, i’ll go with the doctor on this one. The businessman would like to save the day but i dont think the government is a ‘business’

Any other candidate might have gladly accepted a family inheritance for personal gain, but not Romney. He gave his entire inheritance to his alma mater. Leave it to his tax returns to prove his generosity because you won’t hear from him.
When the failing 2002 U.S. Olympic Committee needed help, it turned to the man who had spent his life helping individuals and companies elevate themselves. He served three years without pay. He would later serve four years as governor of Massachusetts, never taking a salary. Any other candidate might have used these positions for personal gain, but not Romney. With 28 years of unpaid service to his state, country and God, Romney is a proven “public servant.”
Given the opportunity, Any other candidate might run for president for ego or prestige, but not Romney. His motive is to lead our nation back to greatness, restore pride in the American heart and reinvigorate the American dream.

Instead, vote for the true humanitarian, Barak Obama, who promises to save the poor with endless handouts he’ll get from destroying the middle class. Or vote for Ron Paul, which will essentially be a vote for Obama; but at least you can have feel good for voting Anyone But Romney.

i dont vote for people based on who is the most ‘humanitarian’. A humanitarian playing president with other peoples money is never a good thing. George bush was very humanitarian – look what that got us…how many billions did he give to africa? How much money is romney planning on giving to his pet projects and peoples?

At least ron paul will cut it ALL out and let the american people be charitable with their own money

To use this absolute non-issue “story” to go after your opponent just cost Santorum my vote.

I am tired of his whining. I am tired of his continuing to feed the left with narratives that are so unimportant that all they do is waste time and distract from actual issues that matter. It is starting to feel like it is more personal than just good ol campaign rhetoric.

This story does not matter to anyone but a few idiot radical animal rights fanatics and Santorum decides it is worth his effort to regurgitate it and allow the leftist media to continue this meaningless narrative? I am sorely disappointed.

Santorum is both whiney, judgmental and petty at this point. All parts of his current state of desperation to save not the country but his own flailing career. What a true disappointment Santorum has turned out to be. When he was still a nobody that happened to be running I guess he was ok but as he has revealed more of his true character he just turns out to be a jerk. The type nice people avoid.

I completely agree. Santorum continues to show his weakness. By dredging up the same 29 year-old story that liberal NY Times columnist Gail Collins loves to dwell upon, he shows his desperation for ammunition to hurl at his opponent–instead of delivering his own message on the NATION’S ISSUES. Santorum is purposely distorting the story from 1983 by saying Mitt Romney ‘strapped his dog to the car roof and hurtled down the highway’. Way to sensationalize, Mr. Santorum! Any Internet search will take you to the actual and true details of the story, which involves a protective dog carrier, a windscreen, and a dog that was used to and enjoyed riding around that way.
I am tired of arrogant and snarky Mr. Santorum focusing on non-stories, petty and personal attacks, exagerations, and some outright lies to puff himself up.
      He completely turns me off.

That story is just a joke! The dog was perfectly protected unless the car rolled over and in those days all of them would’ve been in serious trouble, because there were not seat belts.
The dog lived to be 15 and for a large dog, that is an old age.
There’s no one who loves dogs more than I do, but this is another non story by santorum.
BTW, the former governor of Utah had an article about Romney and the false allegations by santorum that he didn’t save the Olympics. I posted it on another side on theblaze, but it took me 3 postings because of the length. I’ve sent it to them to try and get them to post the story, but as BIGGY santorum supporters, they haven’t posted it.
After 9/11 supporters bailed out en masse. Romney travelled to those businesses and convinced them that they would be OK and the Olympics would go on as scheduled. As it turned out it was one of (I think) 2 Olympics that didn’t leave massive debt.
Quoting from the article by Gov Mike Leavett:
“Within weeks of his arrival, Mitt had laid out a revitalized vision for the Games. Mitt assembled a new team to bring the budget under control. I repeatedly heard him explain that if the budget was to be balanced, every spending request had to be divided into needs and wants. He called on the people of Utah to volunteer to close the gap. I’ll never forget the ad he placed in Utah papers. It read:
“Help wanted; hard work, no pay, better hurry.” Fifty thousand people responded.”

You know I did like the story Glenn told about him and the employees missing daughter .. I have to say that brought him up many notches for me. It’s just so hard with the Romneycare and the comment he made about currency when asked about the federal reserve. I had recently been reading I believe something Thomas Jefferson had written about the management of currency should never be managed by a central bank and how it could enslave the people and threaten our freedom. I won’t elaborate unless requested. He said that it should be managed by congress. That as long as they were accountable to the people then the people would have control of the currency. Romney made a joke about not getting rid of the federal reserve because what? Were we going to make congress in charge? And laughed. I thought wow if we are going to be talking about original intent and all, it surprised me that he hadn’t considered it.

Ok sorry now he lost every notch and then some with his Puerto Rico pandering for 20 delegates. Another flip flop.
“On Thursday, Romney called a radio station in San Juan (Noti-Uno) for an interview with a local reporter. When asked if he would support requiring that English became the principal language of government as part of a petition for statehood, Romney said no. When asked if he thought the legislature should have English as the principal language, once again Romney said no. He even opposed requiring English in the courts and public schools.
In Louisiana and Alabama, Mitt Romney is for English as the official language of the United States. In 2008, when Romney sought the GOP nomination, he was upfront about his opposition to bilingual education and his support for ending it in Massachusetts. But in Puerto Rico, he is a strong advocate of bilingualism and opposes requiring the state to make English the principal language of the legislature, courts and public schools.”
So when is comes to Santorum.. considering know one asked about Romney pandering but about his dog I suppose you go with what ya got asked about!!! Because Santorum didn’t pander to Puerto Rico.

I was a student at BYU when the Games took place. It was the only time we had a “spring break” at BYU – the whole school took a week off and practically emptied so the bilingual+ students could volunteer en masse to translate for incoming visitors, competitors, dignitaries, etc. I wasn’t yet fluent in Spanish, but my grandpa had given me some Valentine’s Day money so I bought a ticket to the Games and was treated like royalty by multitudes of kind, friendly volunteers as I made my way by bus, TRAX, foot, and finally my aunt’s car from Provo to Bountiful and then Ogden for the Games. I’ll never forget the generosity of spirit shown by SLC, BYU students, and Utah!

santorum abandoned his principles throughout his career in the senate. perhaps the most egregious case was when he supported arlen specter over pat toomey. recall that specter was the deciding vote on obamacare. moreover, “the two men worked closely together for pennsylvania, something that santorum pointed out in his failed 2006 campaign”. indeed, santorum worked hard to bring “home earmarks with specter, a member of the appropriations committee”.

it should be noted that santorum regrets working with specter. this is what he had to say about their relationship this morning on abc- “i certainly knew that arlen specter was going nowhere and i certainly disagreed with a lot of things that he said… it was something i look back and wish i hadn’t done”.

you can find more about his interview on abcnews.com and politico.com…

Ok I could see that at some point if since Specter did what he did Santorum had defended him or stood by him in some way before he ran but he didn’t. He supported him in 2004. Specter left the party in 2009 while still in office. I remember the 2004 elections and how hard the repubs got hit in those races. Hell Soros was throwing everything had in to get Bush and the repubs out. So if Santorum had been defending Specter after 2009 and then dumped him when he ran for President I haven’t seen proof of that. If he stopped supporting him after 2009 I do believe everyone in the republican party did. Everyone that ever supported him in any way from here on out are going to get questioned for it. As soon as it becomes ammunition for the other side. So When Rommney throws it at him in a debate …. it’s as bullcrap a jab as the Santorum one for the dog.
