Santorum: ‘The Constitution Is There to Do One Thing: Protect God-Given Rights’

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum had several crowd pleasing remarks during Thursday’s GOP debate from Jacksonville on CNN, a strong performance which many speculated was a must for the former Pennsylvania Senator to keep pace in the Florida primary race as Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have begun to separate themselves in the polls.

When an audience member asked the candidates how their religious beliefs would affect their decisions as President, Santorum turned to the nation’s founding documents to reference the relationship between faith and governance.

“The Constitution is there to do one thing, protect God-given rights,” said Santorum. “That’s what makes America different than every other country in the world.”

“When you say ‘faith has nothing to do with it’– faith has everything to do with it,” Santorum went on to say over applause. “If our President believes that rights come to us from the state, everything government gives you, it can take away.

“The role of the government is to protect rights that cannot be taken away.”

USA Today notes that Texas Rep. Ron Paul answered the question by saying that his beliefs affect the way he treats people, and the only thing that affects him, as a congressman or president, is his oath of office. NPR reports that Romney concurred with Paul, but adds that he “would also seek the guidance of providence in making decisions.”

Gingrich answered the question in three parts, saying that “anyone who is president is faced with decisions so enormous they should go to God,” and that faith isn’t just an hour on Sundays. Gingrich closed with a popular argument that he has made before, saying that one of the reasons he is running is because “there has been a war on religion, particularly on Christianity in this country.”

“I frankly believe it’s important to have leadership that says, enough, we are given the right for religious freedom, not religious oppression by the state.”

I absolutely 100% stand by Santorum. I have heard all kinds of IMPORTANT REASONS to NOT vote for the others. I cannot find wrong in Santorum, and the closer I look, the more I agree with about everything he says…Look, we Americans are on the verge of destruction permanently. This is not a passive issue… This was the greatest Constitution and country ever…now what are we going to be? Another past tense Rome?. Now is the time to start defending it from our elected officials before it is too late.

15 minutes into the debate Romney’s nose grew 2 feet. I thought Mormons were moral people? Didn’t know that was his add? What a liar and Wolfe called him on it. Then as a typical millionaire has not a clue where his money is. Swiss bank accounts? Investing in Freddie and Fanny?… come on. At this point he could go toe to toe with Obambie. With his lies and deflections.
Santorum called him on his Government health care and Mr. Nicely promised it was different. What’s the difference?

If the Chief in Liar is to be our nominee, then we are better off making sure the Congress and House is Republican and let Obama have the office.

Baloney.@Everyone else: If you as a conservative Christian (not a Republican) cannot vote for Santorum then vote for one who has found his new found faith after 3rd marriage and called self a Progressive or a Mormon which so many get their panties twisted over (not a problem for me if he is last man standing) or Ron Paul who is libertarian but runs under the Republican banner as he did last election. Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry have left the building because ya didn’t like their conservatism. Bottom line: Put some money where your beliefs are as I did, it is that important to us all. Are we people of character and hope or are we just falling for the same old lies that mainstream media did during the McCain presidential election. We need to vote for who we want to win, not the media. Do your own homework, stop listening to the everyone else, we are individuals, not the collective. Go Rick. I refused to let the media force Mitt down my throat at the beginning of this process and now it feels that way again. I have been really unsure of Santorum until last night. I felt like he was really the only true conservative candidate that comes any where close to representing the Tea Party values. However, he was just such ‘milk toast’. Last night he really stepped up to the plate and showed he has what it takes to take on the big government administration and represent the people. My vote will be for Santorum.

That’s fine — UNTIL it‘s no longer YOUR particular religion that’s holding the reins.

The Constitution was BASED on Biblical principles, so that atheists and other religions wouldn’t be discriminated against. More importantly, the Constitution prevents CHRISTIANS from being discriminated against.

I had serious trouble with Ron Paul’s stance on foreign policy until this week. A few things changed my mind. First, he has more support from the military than ALL the other candidates put together. That ought to mean something. I have heard him speak about the role of the military as necessarily strong because it’s their job to protect us. Second, we are at a place economically that we just can’t afford to police the world or send aid to everybody (particularly China!). His policies would put a serious dent in our overseas commitments, and no true conservative can object to that. Third, all this nation-building has done nothing but dirty our hands and kill our troops. We did, after all, give weapons to bin Ladin for years before he became enemy number one. The CIA said we created the blowback that caused the Iran hostage crisis back in the late seventies because we funded the efforts to overthrow their government, which ironically put in control the powers we are currently fending off. Hussein was our ally for years because of the mess we created in Iran. Fourth, we need to get our troops home before the situation in the world becomes so volatile that we find ourselves to be targets for any and every nut case within range of an overseas base.

I know Ron Paul is not the prettiest or best dressed. But he has support from practically every strata. Please reconsider Paul. Santorum is good. But Paul is better than you think.

The former – that our rights come from God – is true. Santorum, however, has declared that he is going to trample all over them anyway, as (in his own words) “the pursuit of happiness is what is killing America.”

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=03zFTTqHScI

He doesn’t agree that people should be able to do what pleases them the most. He says that “conservatives” know that people have responsibilities – and Santorum, empowered apparently by God, according to him – is going to spend his entire life forcing you to do it. And how DARE people try to do what they want as long as no one gets hurt (when the entire argument against abortion – the only one that makes sense – is that SOMEONE DOES GET HURT). I‘m surprised he hasn’t gone so far as to demand the repeal (or just ignoring) of the First Amendment’s religious rights to let him mandate Christianity.

That answer by Rick Santorum was exactly right. Our individual rights are God-given and they do not come from any government.

If you haven’t read the “The Miracle of Freedom: 7 Tipping Points that Saved the World,” please do. Without the advent of Christianity, which is based on the Golden Rule, critical thought and equality, there would be no freedom. Before that there was only bondage. The Founders understood that and it is the basis of our Law, which is the U.S. Constitution.

Interestingly enough, the first Yugoslavian aka Balkan Christian Serbian Empire’s Constitution was based on these same Christian principles of equality, and Emperor Dusan wrote the Dusanic Law and for the first time in Serbian history the Emperor was not considered above the people but equal to them, as all Kings and Emperors before him had been made Saints and were considered superior to the people they ruled over.

Understanding the basis for the U.S. Constitution is important to understanding what it means for our individual freedom, and Rick Santorum hit the nail on the head with his answer. And Rick Santorum knows what freedom means because his grandfather left Italy when fascist Mussolini was in power and he knew what it meant to live under a Godless tyranny.

Because Santorum doesn’t sound like a Christian applying the Golden Rule (or Catholic Just War Theory) – he sounds like a warmongering racist theocratic bastard who sees enemies around every corner.

Our Founders believed that our rights were natural rights that came from our “creator” whatever that was. They used the word “creator,” not God, for a reason. That is because they wanted a secular government that allowed the free practice of all religions or no religion at all. Creator can mean different things to different people. God, Creator, Jesus, Christian, etc. appears nowhere in the Constitution. If you believe that our rights came from the god of the bible or Christian god, then what changed his mind? All you have to do is read a few bible passages to clearly see that biblical people had few rights, supposedly given to them by the same god that gave us ours. If the bible god was so omniscient why did he not inscribe a few of these liberty principles on the tablets? “Thou shalt not own another human being” would have made much more sense than to prohibit coveting your neighbor’s stuff, which amounts to regulating what people think.

Santorum at least is the closest thing to a genuine conservative left, a decent guy who admittedly cut some deals (supporting that creepy weasel Arlen Specter – Agent Spectre) solely to achieve a higher calling, i.e., save a Supreme Court slot for a conservative. I could vote for him and sleep at night, at least he says what he means. Hope he hits a slam dunk in Florida.

Ron Paul: Love what he has to say about fiscal policy and constitutional government, but on drugs and foreign policy he is an absolute candidate for the rubber room. He could bunk with Gary Johnson as a matter of fact.

Romney: And old guard Rockefeller Rupubicon like his dad, his upside is he would not be Obama; his downside is he would be George Bush III. And that has really worked out for us, eh?

Newt: Newt is everything to everybody, which is always an inevitable failure because you end up being nothing to nobody. Like Clinton, just wants to be President and will do whatever it takes to get there, and would do whatever it takes to stay there. He is Clinton but without the penchant for fat chicks and McDonalds. We already had a Nixon, people….

While he’s not Ronald Reagan, how I wish Paul Ryan would have stepped up. Not as conservative per se as I would have liked, but my gosh at least he can connect and help people really understand the grave danger our fiscal and monetary policy presents right now. We’ll undoubtedly see him run in 2016 but I really fear that will be too late

Our founders biggest worry was that what is happening is what would happen. Now, we see a president stand before the American people and ask for power to be consolidated at the Executive level. He has already usurped his authority, and says he will bypass Congress if they do not capitulate to his demands.
That is incredible….but that so many Americans do not see the danger looming is even more incredible!
Santorum is the only one I can trust to follow the Constitution, speak his moral convictions, and have the wisdom to realize that the world has changed since our founding. Paul refuses to see that reality.

The Constitution is the ‘how’, but the Declaration is the ‘why’. They cannot be separated.

Ron Paul is not the only person in the world that read the constitution!! Santorum is simply saying they go together!! Ron Paul for some reason never agrees with Santorum, like tonight, when he called out Newt and Mit on mandates. Santorum said he wants government out of it, and that they both supported mandates. Then you master Ron Paul said he disagreed with all of them, then stated the exact same thing Santorum did!! They are very similar on fiscal policies. Their only differences are national security and how much faith should be apart of government.

He said Teddy Roosevelt would be the guy he would model his healthcare after. If you listen, you notice all his big ideas are more government. Colony on the moon, Social security entitlements, healthcare mandates. He can talk up a pretty good conservative message tho. Santorum does not want everone to think like him. Hi,

Rick Santorum is not someone to say what people want to hear. He is talks is depths about social issues other candidates won’t touch. He believes in America the way it was founded. He is passionate about Faith, Family, Freedom, and that they all go together. He believes in the constitution and that is linked together to the declaration. He talks about making bold cuts, and being honest with the people about them. Social security for example…Newt wants to add entitlements that will cost more money when we are running a 1.2 trillion deficit. Rick wants to make cuts that will be uncomfortable with us, but are necessary to get our fiscal house in order. We have to make tough decisions, not lie and make up things that will get a big applause. Is he a perfect candidate? No, but he is the only true conservative running. Romney is a moderate, Newt is a progressive, and Paul is too libertarian. All are better than Obama, but Rick is the strong conservative that we need. God Bless.

Ron Paul is not someone to say what people want to hear. He talks in depths about economic issues other candidates won’t touch. He believes in America the way it was founded. He is passionate about Freedom, in the real sense that individuals get to choose their own ends, whether it be Faith, Family, etc. He believes in the Constitution and that is linked together to the Declaration (including that “pursuit of happiness” bit Santorum hates). Rick Santorum is NOT a conservative, anyway: “This whole idea of personal autonomy, well I don’t think most conservatives hold that point of view. Some do. They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues.”

-he supported NCLB – a massive expansion of the federal government’s role in education
      -he supported Medicare Part D
-he voted for the 2005 Highway Bill full of earmarks including the infamous Bridge to Nowhere
-requested billions for pork projects in PA during his time in Congress
-In the 2003/2004 session of Congress, Santorum sponsored or cosponsored 51 bills to increase spending and failed to sponsor even one spending cut proposal
-in 2005/2006 Santorum had one of the biggest spending agendas of any Republican, he sponsored more spending increases than even RINOs like Lisa Murkowski and Lincoln Chafee
      -voted for imported steel tariffs
      -voted for Sarbanes-Oxley
-he supported RINO Arlen Specter over conservative Pat Toomey

So basically, Rick Santorum supports a nanny state collectivist government that spends a lot of money and heavily regulates business. Why in the world would conservatives vote for someone like that? The answer is that they probably wouldn’t if they knew the above, but we live in a sound bite world where people don’t dig in tha

It is. Many of the founders grew it on their plantations. It wasn’t even illegal until the PROGRESSIVE ERA, and society did just fine. Prohibition didn’t work with alcohol, and it isn’t working with weed (or any of the other illegal drugs). It only empowers illegal cartels, and inflames the border issues.
