Santorum: Well Step Aside if Romney Gets the Delegates

Rick Santorum said Sunday he would bow out of the GOP presidential race if frontrunner Mitt Romney secures the necessary 1,144 delegates before the Republican National Convention in August.

“If Governor Romney gets to that required number, without a doubt if he’s at that number, we’ll step aside,” Santorum said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Santorum’s words are a contrast to fellow candidate Newt Gingrich, who has vowed to stay in the race all the way to the convention in Tampa, Fla.

“But right now [Romney's] not there, he’s not even close to it,” Santorum continued. “Less than half the delegates have been selected, we‘ve got a long way to go and we’re going to fight the fight to make sure we can win.”

Romney leads the delegate count with 568 to Santorum’s second place 273. Gingrich is third with 135 delegates and Ron Paul is in last place with 50.

Santorum also brushed off the high-profile endorsements Romney picked up this week ahead of Tuesday’s Wisconsin primary, including Sens. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).

“If you listen to the endorsements, you know, they all say the race has to end,” he said. “That’s not a great endorsement of Governor Romney, it’s saying well we need to end this.”

Of Ryan and Rubio, Santorum quipped: “Everybody’s entitled to a mistake in their life, Rubio and Ryan are pretty young, they’ll recover from it.”

He disputed the notion that Wisconsin’s race was “do or die,“ but acknowledged the vote would send a ”strong signal” about the future of the race.

“This is a herculean task that we‘re involved in and it’s going well,” Santorum said.

      when was the last time we had a real conservative in the white house…reagan? anyone poised not to vote for romney is a vote for obama. conservatism is not dead it is dealt with in the house and at lower levels if the folks wake up and vote republican. I am with the rnc on this they know what they are doing this time with reince running the show. rick santorum could cost romney the election his big horse head and idiot speak needs to go away. the guy is a walking moron providing 100′s of sound bites for dem ads. He is an idiot.

      Enough is enough with Rick Santorum. He’s out there floundering in the same swamp lands as Gingrich now, with no money coming in and facing the ugly truth that at least 7 of the next 8 primaries are going to be won by Mitt Romney. Do we have to go back to talking about sleeping with dead babies and his wife’s lust for old geezers to humiliate him into getting out? Okay, I’ll do it.

      heavy duty: It should not be too late to find a REAL CONSERVATIVE to run on the Republican ticket. The GOP keeps handing us RHINOS. Maybe they should reconsider for the GOOD OF THE COUNTRY. This Republican party is not the Conservative Party that I signed on to 43 years ago. It’s getting so that it is hard to tell the difference between the democrats and the Republicans anymore. They all seem to be getting in line with the Bilderbergs to make way for the One World Order. Remember that I told you that there is no One World Order in The Bible. The One World Order is satan’s plan for the world. It’s his last gasp to control the world, and take it away from God Almighty. As if that would ever be possible. Woe to the people that are on the wrong side of this issue when Jesus comes back. We are either worshipers of God Almighty, or worshipers of satan. There are only two beings that are in conflict, and both are vying for our affections.
      If the GOP is serious about taking back the White House, then they should have been more careful in choosing who they would back as a Republican candidate. In my estimation, they have put the Country in great jeopardy. We are on a collision course with disaster, and we don’t even see the train wreck coming!?

      You don’t understand. If you put a fake conservative in the white house who will continue us on the path of ruin. When that ruin happens, especially if it happens in this fake conservative’s administration, who’s going to be blamed? Conservatism. Capitalism. All failures, see!

      I’d rather let Obama keep the control so when it does collapse on him, he’s to blame. Kensian economics can be blames, rather than the free markets.

That would have been 1969, the era of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Nelson Rockefeller and Mitt Romney’s father, George. Hardly a bunch of rock-ribbed conservatives, these were what we refered to as “Country Club Republicans” – and they ran the show back then. Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan were hanging around, but not in real power, so I’m not sure what you mean when you seem to infer that the GOP was more conservative back then. Maybe you could enlighten poor disenlightened?

      i’m still not sure why type of republican george bush was but it is clear that mitt romney is to the left of george bush. Now, if the republicans let george bush do whatever he wanted – why do you think they would “restrain” mitt romney? There is zero indication the republican establishment has had a change of heart.

      The truth is, if the republicans get the presidency – it will be partytime again and any principles are out the window in favor of political expediency. That is why we HAVE to have a strong principled conservative candidate

      I assume by ‘dumb things’ you’re referring to the statements the liberal media takes out of context and builds a story around. All you have to do is listen to his interviews and non-teleprompted speeches to realize he’s no dummy.

      You criticize as though you never stumble on your words or start to say something and change your mind mid-sentence. I hate to break it to you, but no candidate is gaffe-free while campaigning, unless they’re reading from a teleprompter. (and even then, they sometimes mispronounce words like corpsman … oops! I take that back … that was no candidate, that was our President)

      Wake up to reality and make an adult decision. There are basically two guys left in the running right now and Santorum is more of a conservative than Romney. He’s not a libertarian, so you can’t compare him to Ron Paul. He’s a conservative like Reagan … a far better choice than Romney, and certainly a better choice than Obama.

    The truth si the best candidate to have run against obama and win was Herman Cain. The Dems knew that as well I so they went to work and without much ado found some dirt on cain. The same dirt found on a democrat would be just fine. I was very shocked and disappointe dthat even Cain had dirt that was so easily uncovered. I like rubio but if he supports romney, I am preplexed.

      soybomb315: You are correct. It is as though it was the plan in the beginning that the VERY WORST candidate should be the Republican choice. Please study the plan of the Bilderbergs. They are dismantling America, the last bastion of freedom in the world, because they want to usher in their One World Order. It appears that Romney will do their bidding. They would have had great change for the better with Newt Gingrich, and the Bilderbergs don’t want change. Newt would have worked to dismantle Obama‘s administration’s positions, get rid of the czars, drill for our own oil, protect our religious liberties, etc. That would have hindered the movement of the One World Order and the destruction of capitalism. Santorum would have protected our freedoms and liberties as well. On the other hand, Romney would do the most good to further the Bilderbergs plan.
      The Bilderbergs work through the media, the big banks, seek to control governments, and hate the internet and the Tea Party. We are in dire straights folks, and here we are playing with the lives of the people and the survival of America, ignoring the perils ahead. Making big mistakes!
      This election will be bought with big money. Our government will be run by Europeans, Scandinavians, China, and the Middle East through the Bilderbergs who seek power, wealth, and control. Perhaps we have been fooled all along and haven’t really chosen any of our Presidents for a long time. Think of our children and grandchildren.

      I‘m perplexed by Rubio’s decision as well. (I was also disapointed in Paul Ryan.) These two politicians would have been wise to hold their opinions for a couple more months. I could understand them throwing their support behind Romney if it were June. But we’re only halfway there and still have some large delegate states yet to cast their votes.

      look4dbigpicture: I was disappointed in Rubio (though he does not impress me as he does others) and Paul Ryan. They want to go with a “winner”, and I believe that both have been mentioned as possible picks for VP. I think they are just positioning themselves so they can be part of the political picture. Young yet. They have a long way to go before they get into the dirty politics of the political gamesmanship.

    Santorum has a very slim chance of getting the delegates needed. He needs to get out so we can get on to bashing Barry. I want to see Barry bashed 24–7.

    What a worthless president we have. I am ashamed to say that he is our first black president. I was hoping for more of a Michael Jordan. All he has to offer like Mike is the smile. Which doesn’t do much when your country is going down the tube!

      I have thoroughly studied your mor***mon religion. All 531 pages of your book are false; pure and simple. Any man who believes the fairy tales found within, leaves questions in my mind. A person lives their lives by their belief system. Any man that believes in the bony, fleshy finger of Jesus coming out of the sky to touch 16 stones to bring them light; any man who believes in magic balls used to guide people to this continent; any man who believes that Lamanites are the black race, that one day all turned white, etc. does not have my vote. Any man that believes in a god that was once a man and that he himself is climbing to godhead will not get my vote. Any man who believes in proxy baptism of the dead to bring them into the mor***mon religion to advance them heavenward does not get my vote.       Mary, quit being a bigot. Just because you proclaim you are christian before you write your bigotry is bigotry all the same. I am not Mormon but I will defend their right to believe in what they believe in. The LDS people are great people. Your claims of fantasy in the Book of Mormon could be applied to the Bible as well. I am a Christian, but you can say that men walking on water, seas being split apart, manna falling from heaven, and all the other things in the Bible are just as unbelievable as the beliefs of LDS people. Allow them to believe in what they believe, and the last time I checked they believe in Jesus Christ (just maybe not exactly the same way you do). Mitt Romney is a good man who has demonstrated good christian values in his life time and time again. He will be a good president and 10x better than Obama

      TRUTH HAS NO AGENDA. I thought Glenn Beck taught us all that!
      I NEVER take anyones word for anything…I study for myself. The HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD leads us to ALL TRUTH. But we have to be lead by THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD to understand all truth.       Then promptly go on to say that you believe Glenn Beck (a Mormon)… and support what he has “taught” you.

      God is the judge, not you… I hope you can come to accept that other people are entitled to their beliefs and won’t hate on them for it. I think in time you come to figure out that we try our best and are generally a good and industrious people.

      By the way, for all other readers… I’m sure you all figured this out, but Mary’s portrayal of our beliefs was short-sighted, out of context, and classic anti-mormon rhetoric. Most of which isn’t even mentioned in the book of mormon from which she claimed to cite it from.

    Well, I’d say that the media, Fox included, did its job. They did everything they could to make sure that Romney would be the Republican candidate, and it appears that they have gotten their wish. The Bild***erbergs also got their way, because as one follows the race to this point, it is very clear that Romney was also the Bilder***berg choice. Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich were demonized at every turn to pave the way for Romney. Romney’s negative campaign dishonored his opponents at every turn, and I feel that this was one of the meanest campaigns I’ve ever seen. Apparently it convinced the electorate, which shows me that they are gullible. The media said Romney was the “front runner” so many times, that people believed it, and everyone wants to go with a “winner”.
    I’ll be very frank and say that I could never vote for Romney. He appears to be on both sides of an issue, and therefore cannot be trusted. Also, having studied mor***monism, I could never vote for a mor***mon. I am first and foremost a Christian, and I understand that we are the descendants of ancient Israelites, having written extensively on the subject. I could never stand before God and have to answer for voting for a candidate that was a cul***tist to rule over descendants of ancient Israel. If Obama wins the election and destroys America further so that we can no longer recogize our beloved Country, then maybe it will finally wake Americans up.

      bolsenoo: I read the book of mor***mon FROM COVER TO COVER, and have the markings on EVERY PAGE TO PROVE IT. If I said I read it, I indeed read it. Exactly what did you want to discuss with me about the book? The question is…DID YOU READ IT!???
      Frankly the book was not worth reading…because it was all lies, but I READ IT NONETHELESS. I have studied all false religions, and wrote about the major false religions, studying mythology to write my book over a period of 7 years. I have previously studied mor***monism as well in 2000.
      I have also done extensive research about mor***monism on the internet. Most recently I studied the information on Sandra Tanner’s site. She is a direct descendant of Brigham Young and came out of mor***monism, who (Brigham Young) I believe had over 50 wives.
      I also read Critical Essay, written in 1832 by Alexander Campbell. Perhaps you would be enlightened if you too read it.
      I have a question for you…if the Nephites and Lamanites (Lamanites being their so-called black race, which later turned all white in one day) were here on this continent, why were the Native American Indians in such a state of savagry when the white man landed on these shores? After all, didn’t the mor***mons tell us that they built HUGE CITIES and had such large civilizations, many wars, advanced weapons, etc. Can you find that in Native American legend!? Didn’t think so!

That the American Indians are direct descendants of the Nephites and Lamanites is preposterous. They are ancient Phonenican/Canaanites, and I can prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt, historically and archeologically.
      You say that Lehi and Nephi and Lehi’s family came out of the time period of the Babylonian captivity. That would make them Shemitic/Semites, because the Israelites were just that. Your Joseph Smith had not a clue as to who the true Israelites were anciently. I spoke to an elderly man that I admire yesterday about mor***monism, and he called your religion a counterfeit, and has studied it extensively. He told me that just like Islam and the Quran, Joseph Smith took a tiny bit of truth and mixed it with a whole lot of fiction. He said that is the way that most false religions are founded.
      Yes, I read your book, but most mormons have not even read it. My husband wondered if you wanted me to get a notary to sign that the book has been studied. LOL

      Mary, you have said a lot but so far have given very little to support your thoughts. So far you have cited a descendant of Brigham Young which adds no validity to an argument. You have cited an article written in 1832, the LDS church officially became a church in 1830, Joseph Smith lived almost 10 more years before he was murdered, during that time he continued to receive revelation and doctrine for the church. It would be impossible for an article written in 1832 to be an accurate portrayal of LDS beliefs. You have cited your own book which is fascinating claiming to know the origins of ancient American people. This is also fascinating considering current archeoligical theory still does not know. In fact very little is known about this because the archeological sights are very difficult to reach. There were huge cities and civilization during the timeframes claimed in the book of Mormon. This is archeological fact. You are right that Joseph Smith know nothing about ancient american civilization. Which makes it more amazing that the more they discover the more the timeliness fit the book of Mormon. My 5th grade history book said the Mayans were peaceful farmers who cake to power in the 2nd to 3rd century ad. Since then they have discovered they were actually a waR like people, very violent, and in the 3rd century ad were at war with another super power that they eventually conquered. That is from National Geographic breaking the Mayans code, not from some guy I talked to.

You claim you are a Christian, which sect do you belong to? Why do you belong to that sect? Are you Catholic, they were first major church to come to power after the apostles were killed. Are you protestant? If you are then by default you admit that there was a falling away from Christs original church. Paul talks about a “unity of the faith” Christ talks about the gate being narrow the path straight which leads to eternal life. Neither of these two concepts can be seen in modern Christianity. Are you nondenominational? The old and new testament are very clear that an individual must have auhority to speak for God. Who has that authority today? Where did they get that authority? All anyone has been able to tell me before is that my beliefs are wrong. They cannot however answer the logical and biblically based questions. You are welcome to try.

      The person that can help you the most is Sandra Tanner. If you visit her site it will be of great help to you, because she will understand you because she was raised a mormon, and came out of mormonism and could answer your questions better than I can…though I will give it my best.
      If you read Critical Essay by Alexander Campbell, you will find that he was there when mormonism began and knows how it came about. His essay is very informative and you can read it online. He wrote it in 1832. He describes how Joseph Smith used a black hat and two seer stones to write the book of mormon.
      I have extensively studied THE HOLY BIBLE from Genesis to Revelation MANY TIMES over a period of 40 years. As I read your book I could easily see where Joseph Smith fabricated the book he wrote taking Scripture and perverting it. He took multiplied Scriptures out of context to create his own story. Much of what he used, claiming the story originated from plates from the time of the Babylonian captivity are so taken out of context that it is impossible for Lehi or Nephi to have access to such Scriptures. Even later in his writings Joseph Smith tells how Jesus came from heaven directly after his resurrection to preach to the Nephites and Lamanites here on this continent, quoting Scripture from the New Testament word for word, not even written at that time.

      rgundi: continuing on…I could easily pick apart Joseph Smith’s writings. They are completely inconsistent with The Holy Bible in so many respects. You would need to correctly study Joseph Smith’s early life to understand that he and his family were treasurer hunters.
      I wrote a total rewrite of history, and so I stand by my own work 100%. There is not a shred of archeological evidence of any place name or person in the book of mormon, and I have carefully looked. The American Indians were indeed an ancient Phoenician/Canaanite race, and when my book is published, it will be easily proven. No mormon cities or civilizations are found in any legend of people from this continent. No archeological facts exist; period.
      I know the history of God’s Chosen People Israel. Lehi and Nephi do not fit in it. Their idea that they used ancient Egyptian writing is also false. I wrote about the S. American races, and mormonism does not fit there either.
      Thank you for your sincere question. Who is right if mormonism is false…THE HOLY BIBLE which is GOD’S WORD. You also ask what faith I am. I was raised in the Lutheran and Baptist church, and choose Assembly God as a young person. When I married a Presbyterian, we raised our children in the Free Methodist Church as a compromise. Now I only consider myself a True Worshiper of God in Spirit and in truth. God showed me he does not adhere to denominations. He called them a raggedy patchwork quilt sewn haphazaardly.

      rgundi: You ask me by what authority I speak. Though I would have rather that God chose someone else, He called me at an early age and told me exactly what I would do. I guess you could say, I have always known my calling. In l994 God told me that I had been sent as His messenger. After 9/11 he came to me and told me to put His Whole House of Israel together again. He told me exactly how this was to be done. I wrote down exactly what His instructions were. Over the course of 7 years I wrote God’s book, and it turned out exactly as He told me it would. I put His Whole House of Israel together again, and in the process studied all the races and religions of the world. One day it will be considered one of the greatest works of its kind ever written, and not because of me. I say that most humbly.
      The true way to God is found ONLY in The Holy Bible. It is not found in a man-made religion which is only man’s way of reaching toward a god. It is found in Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ and His shed blood alone. The Bible is the story of the one nation called Israel that God chose from all the nations of the earth (2 Samuel 7: 23-24). From Genesis to Revelation it is the story of Israel…its past, present, and its future. If you read it from start to finish you will see that it is a powerful book. There is none like it. Many people have given their lives to protect it. It is the only religion with a resurrected Savior. It is TRUTH and it is FACT.

      Mary, thank you for taking the time to write.out your response. Good luck with your book. I am going to disagree with a few of your primary premises. I find the Bible and the Book of Mormon to be completely consistent. I have read them both extensively, since you have read the Book of Mormon you will know it is extensively cross referenced with the bible. I find Joseph Smith to be a prophet of God and his actions consistent with the prophets in the Bible. I will not say your calling does not come from God, by their fruits you shall know them so if it comes from God it will stand. I have read the viewpoints like Miss Tanner although not hers specifically. I am familiar with the talking points but in reality it all comes back to Joseph Smith. I believe he was a prophet and was called to restore the true church of Jesus Christ. Thank you for the discussion.

    I will not be voting this year. I will not vote for obama, obviously. I will also not waste my time voting for Romney, who I do not like because he is a Rino. I waited on lline 4 hours to vote for McCain who i did not like either. However, I wanted to do my best to prevent Obama from winning. since I know that it is in G-d’s hands anyway. I will accept his decision. He is in charge of everyhting. Besides soros said it himself, Romney is Obama lite.What good is that?

    The Rebublican establishment is going to out money us on the top of the ticket, give us another RINO and likely as not get beat AGAIN!!! But the more TEA party conservatives we can put in the Congress the better of we will be. We have to get rid of the RINO’s before there is any chance of putting things right.

      13th imam: Well…then that will teach the GOP a lesson won’t it?? Mark Levin points that out very clearly, but then maybe the GOP should consider that when they throw RHINOS into the mix. There comes a time when a person has to vote their conscience and stand firmly on their principles and values. Perhaps the American people will not fully awaken until what they hold dear is striped from them. We’ll eventually get it one way or the other. To put Romney on the ticket, in the first place, is the wrong thing to do in my estimation. The GOP is just asking for a loss. The GOP and the media PUSHED Romney on the Republicans, telling us that we will be “stuck” with Romney, so in essence, get in line like good little children and vote for their pick.     Who cares what Ryan & Rubio think anyway? It’s not about them, it’s about the people of this nation. They are supposed to be reps of the people & they can be replaced. It seems to me all they really care about is keeping their jobs. Romney represents the same rich factions we’ve had all along & they are ruining this country. All they care about is their pocketbooks & status quo. The only true moderate conservative in this race is Santorum. Gringrich is NOT what he would seem to be, just someone hankering after power & I don’t see stability there. It strikes me he will cater to whomever caters to him & again it will be the rich who win because the rest of us are expendable to him. I don‘t care if Romney does get the delegates because I don’t want him as my President. I don’t like his principles or his methods & I don’t trust the man to do the right things by the majority of the citizens. He would do far better doing something economically to build this country up rather than tear it down by continuing to break up American companies. I don’t doubt that many companies need to be re-structured or re-organized, but disbanded or sold out? He is in a unique position to create jobs & he is not doing so. Actions speak louder than words. We can write in Santorum. I refuse to settle for whomever they pick for us. NOT this time.

    The race is basically over. Romney got it. If Santorum really believes a long race is in the interests of the American people he (as well as Gingrich and Paul) should direct all of thier attacks on Obama and focus on a positive republican primary from here on out. Best case is it will be hard for Obama to react to all 4 candidates.

      He isnt the “winner” until he gets 1144. Even if he gets the 1144, he will lose because too many voters will either not bother to vote or will vote 3rd party.

      Ohio State led Kansas last night by 13 points just before half time. I guess it was over and Ohio State was the winner.       OhioGu – That was weak. This isn’t a 40 minute basketball game. It’s a 6 month primary race that the ENTIRE country has had to watch since last fall.
      Ok, so 20 some odd states still have yet to vote. No one is saying they won’t get their chance. But for all practical purposes, yes, the race is over. Santorum theoretically could mathematically still win but he’s not going to. It’s a virtual impossibility. There’s far too many people that have and will vote for Romney, no matter who stays in or gets out of the race. The point is, to continue is fruitless. In fact, it’s negative progress. Money and resources continue to be spent on a race that is all but done while Obama amasses funds for the general election.
      And no, Martinez, it will not be a landslide victory for Obama. What the hell planet do you live on? the vast majority of independents do not want Obama and the vast majority of Rep. voters will back Romney when it’s all said and done.

    Oh my, maybe I will get my own planet if Romney wins! With the debt ceiling beyond belief and our head of state department giving away billions to other countries, you can bet that we will never get out of this mess. If history repeats itself, you know not only will we have massive debt to deal with, but another world war coming! Good luck, like they will ever solve anything! Woodrow Wilson would have done all the same things during this time! It’s a sell-out folks with our kids in jeopardy! Not like they will ever taste freedom with such a massive debt?

    The only way out is education, tax reductions, less printing of the dollar and austerity measures!

    Oh and you know interests rates will sooner or later be here! The people who are in debt will love that! Not to mention the high cost of living (inflation) that is beginning to hit us now (an added bonus to printing more money). Wake up America! Look at the track record and it will tell you everything!

    I’m torn , I do agree that Newt should get out at the very least and I like Newt ,even gave him money. I think Santorum should stay in for awhile longer to see if things turn.It is harder for obama and his attack machine (the media) to go full out war on our candidate if who that nominee is is still in question. That will work for awhile longer. I would still like our candidates to hit obama more and each other less.

    I will support whoever takes the nomination.

      My preference is a conservative President and conservative Congress, so I’m rooting for Santorum.

      Romney’s more like a blue-dog Democrat than a radical Obama left-winger. If he wins, we need to ensure we have a conservative Congress to force him to govern more conservatively. Otherwise, he will truly be Obama-lite.

      It takes 1,144 out of 2,286 delegates to win. The fat lady hasn’t sung because there are still 1,250 delegates up for grabs.

      Romney = has 566 – needs 578
      Santorum = has 263 – needs 881
      Gingrich = has 140 – needs 1,004
      Paul = has 67 – needs 1,077

      Granted, Romney’s in the lead today, but he’s only half way there. Conservatives needs to start voting smart if they want a conservative to win the election.

      uh, except the RACE IS OVER. Romney has been holding back, saving his best shots for the guy who must be eliminate. Newt is merely hoping he can have “one more debate” but he had that in SC and he blew it. Santorum has a lot to learn about bitterness, sarcasm and pettiness. He’s not ready to be President. Let’s see if he can be GOV of PA or Sen. again. Romney is determined, he didn’t need to spend any of his $ or time – he was already a major success …he loves this country and will turn it around like he did the Olympics. HC does need a total overhaul… I think the compromise should be: First: clear out all the fraud and over charging. Second: Underwrite clinics that Doctors can run using some very successful ones as the role model; Third: Sell Ins. across state lines; Fourth: Clinics not ER rooms for uninsured Fifth: get rid of Employer funding!! I remember when everyone had to get their OWN ins. it was way cheaper, better and tailored to what we needed. What stupid idea made the Employers responsible for our HC? Sixth: Have instant appeals boards set up regionally to decide ins. cases whereby policy holders have been dropped for pre-existing or continuing conditions. Tough ins. that’s why we BUY ins. THEN, once those things are done, let each STATE determine how they’ll handle HC. NOT FEDERALLY…but by State. Tax dollars should be for : Roads, Infra-structure, Food inspection, FAA, and DEFENSE.
