‘We Did it Again!’: Santorum Wins Alabama & Mississippi Primaries

Editor’s note: early Wednesday morning Mitt Romney was declared the winner in Hawaii. Read about that here.

UPDATE: WASHINGTON (AP) — Rick Santorum has swept the GOP’s fight for the South, winning Alabama and Mississippi.

With 71 percent of the vote counted in Alabama, Santorum had 35 percent, Newt Gingrich had 30 percent and Mitt Romney had 28 percent.

In Mississippi, with 90 percent of the vote counted, Santorum had 33 percent, Gingrich had 31 percent and Romney 30 percent.

Evangelical voters played an outsized role in both states.

WASHINGTON—Rick Santorum won the Alabama primary Tuesday night and clung to a lead over Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney in Mississippi, deeply conservative Southern crossroads in the struggle for the Republican presidential nomination.

“We’re on our way to victory tonight; we’re on our way to victory in this election,” exulted Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator who has long sought to emerge as the sole more-conservative rival to Romney.

Romney, the faraway front-runner in the delegate chase, bristled in the hours before the votes were counted, saying Santorum was “at the desperate end of his campaign.”

But it was Gingrich with the most to lose as he struggled for political survival in a part of the country he hoped would fuel one more comeback in the unpredictable race to pick an opponent to President Barack Obama.

There were 107 Republican National Convention delegates at stake on Tuesday, 47 in Alabama, 37 in Mississippi, 17 in Hawaii caucuses and six more in caucuses in American Samoa.

In Alabama, with 54 percent of the precincts counted, Santorum was pulling 35 percent of the vote, Gingrich had 30 percent and Romney 28 percent.

Returns from 79 percent of Mississippi’s precincts showed Santorum with 33 percent, Gingrich 32 percent and Romney 30.

Rep. Ron Paul, the fourth contender, made little effort in the states on the day’s ballot.

Evangelicals played an outsized role in both primary states, underscoring the challenge to Romney. In Mississippi and Alabama, 80 percent or more of voters leaving their polling places said they were born again Christians or evangelical. Those voters have been reluctant to rally to Romney’s side in the primaries and caucuses to date. Among them, Santorum bested Romney by 9 points in Alabama and 4 points in Mississippi.

More broadly, the exit polls showed a primary electorate that was conservative, determinedly Republican and profoundly unhappy about the government.

In Mississippi, more than eight in 10 voters said they were dissatisfied or angry with the federal government, while in Alabama, 80 percent said they would definitely vote for the Republican candidate against Obama next fall, no matter who he is.

While Alabama and Mississippi are among the most conservative states in the country and share a long border, the exit polls showed significant differences in the voters’ reaction to the candidates.

In Mississippi, Romney had the support of 30 percent of primary voters who earn under $50,000 a year, compared with 26 percent in Alabama. He drew the backing of 33 percent of Mississippi primary voters with no college education, compared with 27 percent in Alabama.

Only about half of all voters in each state said they work fulltime for pay, and they, too, voted differently one state from the other.

antorum outpolled Romney, 39 percent to 23 percent among that group in Alabama. The two men tied among that group in Mississippi.

As has been true in earlier primaries, the economy was the most important issue to voters, and an ability to defeat Obama the most important quality when it came time to pick a candidate.

The exit polls were based on interviews with 1,552 voters as they left 30 randomly selected polling places around Alabama, and with 1,575 Mississippi voters from 30 sites. Each survey had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The Southern showdown came as new polling showed a decline in Obama’s approval ratings — a reversal amid escalating gasoline prices and turbulence in the Middle East.

The day began with Romney leading the delegate competition by far in The Associated Press count, with 454 of the 1,144 needed to win the nomination. Santorum had 217, Gingrich 107 and Paul 47.

That gave the former Massachusetts governor more than his rivals combined. And while Santorum in particular challenges the mathematical projections, Romney is amassing delegates at a rate that puts him on track to clinch control of nomination before the convention next summer.

Romney, campaigning in Missouri, took exception to a television commercial airing in both Southern states and said Santorum “is at the desperate end of his campaign.” The commercial was backed by a super PAC that supports the former senator, not by him.

Santorum‘s camp had earlier issued a memo that dismissed as fuzzy math Romney’s claim that he is on track to amass a delegate majority. “Simply put, time is on our side,” it said.

Gingrich’s aides issued a rebuttal of their own with the polls still open in the primary states. It said the primaries were not yet half over, and the former House speaker “is well positioned to win the GOP nomination.”

The large amount of television advertising was testimony to the importance the contenders and their allies attached to the primaries in both Alabama and Mississippi.

All three candidates as well as super PACs supporting each of them ran television commercials. As has been the case all year, Restore Our Future, which backs Romney, spent more than any of the others. The group put down $1.3 million for television ads in Alabama, another $900,000 in Mississippi and more for radio on Christian and other radio stations as well as thousands of pieces of mail designed to help the former Massachusetts governor.

It was only in recent days that Romney seemed to sense a chance in Alabama and Mississippi, and he responded by increasing his television ad expenditures and his plans for campaigning in the states.

Born in Michigan and a longtime resident of Massachusetts, he told one audience the two primaries were “a bit of an away game for him” and drew laughs from another when he said he hoped to go hunting with an Alabama friend “who can actually show me which end of the rifle to shoot.”

He generally steered away from criticizing his Republican rivals and aimed his rhetoric instead at Obama, whose prospects in both states are as dim next fall as anywhere in the country.

Santorum campaigned against the president and Romney simultaneously as he sought the support of conservatives who have fueled his recent surge.

In Biloxi, Miss., on Monday, he ridiculed the science behind global warming. “The dangers of carbon dioxide? Tell that to a plant, how dangerous carbon dioxide is,” he said.

Gingrich spent part of his time pushing back against suggestions — including from his own staff — that he might drop out if he didn’t notch a pair of Southern victories. His only two wins so far came in the South Carolina primary on Jan 21, and last week, when he won his political home state of Georgia.

Initial polls showed the former House speaker in a strong position in both states, but he abruptly canceled a campaign trip to Kansas in advance of the state’s caucuses late last week to remain in the South.

He used a recorded telephone message from Chuck Norris, the actor and Karate champion, for a last-minute appeal to voters in Alabama.

I voted Santorum earlier and also since morning (thanks to the Advertisor) I already knew that Gov. Bentley also voted for Santorum. Tired of the party machine and pundits telling me who to vote for. It didn‘t help Romney’s cause to fake a southern accent and talk about grits either (if only you northerners knew how this cr@p POs us). Be yourself; Santorum continues to be. Wish Gingrich would drop out to give Santorum a fighting chance, but it looks like he will continue to take out the voice of the conservatives and give RiNO Romney the primary because of it. Still, again, at least my home state voted for the best candidate left (still wish Cain would have stayed in the race; only found out at practice this evening that Cain had a little health relapse but the prognosis looked good, so I do wish him God speed and a quick recovery from that). Gingrich still believes he has a chance; God help us all. :)

Santantrum and gingrich both stand up and cry that Romney has more money than me. Santantrum entered his office as senator with a surplus and left it way in debt. Spending more than you have is NOT conservative. Gingrich is irrelevant. Santantrum is not president material, he is a whiney baby. Obama blames bush and everyone else and Santantrum blames Romney for having more money than him. Santantrum does not have the record, backbone or the brains to fix the economy or reverse obamas’ crap.

If you want Obama to win in a landslide, go ahead and keep voting for Santorum. This guy is a religious idiot and has zero chance of winning a general election. Independents decide the election and no independent I’ve talked to would ever vote for Santorum. We might as well let Obama win and just run the country into the ground that have some moron like Santorum who is just a step away from the Taliban’s ideas. The GOP voted for that ****** McCain and the completely cluess Palin the last time around and that was after that idiot W dragged us into two wars. The GOP is on the verge of becoming a regional party and completely irrelevant on the national level if the best candidates they can produce are Romney, Gingrich & Santorum. Ron Paul is the only one with half a brain, but they pretend like he doesn’t exist. Enjoy $8 a gallon gasoline after these idiots follow Israel into yet another war for no reason.

Agreed. Time for Newt and others who haven’t won any primaries to drop out. Non-winning candidates need to prove they are really only concerned for the country and not solely motivated by self-interest. Just for the age difference alone, I would vote for Santorum. Really tired of past-it old men trying to run the country. We need something new. Recently, Rush stated he believes Obama has no chance in winning.

That choice of dark suit with white fine thread shirt and pink pastel silk tie is exceptional and adds to his dignified and humble, thoroughly sincere and boyish demeanor. What a captivating charismatic leader!

Yep, Santorum did it again–won the battle but lost the war–he lost to Romney on delegate count 41-35–as Romney INCREASED his lead over Santorum . In fact, Santorum really just tied in the battle: 2 states in the south to Romney’s Hawaii and American Samoa. It’s great he won w/in the south and with the ultra-conservative republicans/evangelical group. BUT, when the primary has been in states that more represent the rest of the US, Romney has just about always won. See Florida where he beat the pants off the competition: Romney 46% to Gingrich 32% and Santorum 13%. Also on Tuesday Romney kill the others in another out-of-the-south state–Hawaii: Romney 45% Santorum 25% and Gingrich 11% BEHIND Ron Paul.

Romney has consistently lead the group in polls on who could best beat Obama–being the main candidate who would actually beat Obama. Even among those who voted for Santorum the majority said they felt Romney was going to be the eventual nominee. So, when I see the rhetoric of how Romney is “losing the battle” I have to laugh a bit and remind myself it’s the war that counts.

I can’t stand the thought, but the republican party looks as bad as the Dems did in 2004. No clear candidate, anybody but Obama attitude, when it takes all of us to be for something NOT against something to win. You just don’t see it, but whatever. Americans are still asleep, and don’t get whats really going on. Good luck with your establishment candidates, but im willing to bet ANY of you we get stuck with four more years of Obama. This election it matters not what states you win, the delegates at the convention in Tampa is where the nominee will be picked. Paul is getting supporters in delegate spots across the country. He has a good chance of getting the nomination at the brokered or open convention. Go here and read how his supporters are doing it: http://hillbuzz.org/ron-pauls-devious-plan-to-steal-the-presidency-63749

You see, the GOP is engaging in election fraud and using the media to help carry it out. This is a R3VOLUTION and Paul supporters are fighting hard. The GOP has been infiltrated by neoconservatives (progressives) and they are not doing what it takes to win this election, you see the rules were changed by the GOP to help Romney, but Paul and his supporters learned the system and are using it against the establishment.

      West Coast Patriot,

Thank you for the link. I was unfamiliar with Josh Tolley until now. I enjoyed the info on the video (especially the last 5 minutes or so) and I hope Ron Paul does run as a third party candidate. We desperately need a third party because the two we have are corrupted beyond repair. I also listened to a couple more segments on You Tube from Josh Tolleys radio program titled “God endorses Ron Paul” (parts 1 and 2). I really enjoyed it, I’m officially a Josh Tolley fan now, and I’ll listen to his show as often as possible. Christians like Tolley, (his guest on the mentioned radio segments) Pastor Jacobs, Chuck Baldwin, Laurence Vance, and many others make so much stronger arguments for their candidate (Ron Paul) than any of the war mongering, nanny-state, busy body Christians who support Rick Santorum for those very same non-Christian values.

Here’s an interesting article by Laurence Vance explaining why the “War on Drugs” is much more immoral than legalization of drugs would be.

      http://lewrockwell.com/vance/vance283.html

      * And for the those that will now accuse me of being a pot-head who only supports Ron Paul so I can get high legally. I am a 50 year old Christian conservative police officer and I have never once in my life used any illegal drug or even alchol or tobacco – and not because of the law, but because of my morals – so that tired old arguement doesn’t work.

If, for some reason, (and I doubt it) this goes into a brokered convention, I WILL blame Santorum and Newt for screwing it all up and not having a candidate to 9/1,

Debbie, Sorry, but it is going to be a brokered convention, like it or not. But do not worry, The candidate that will give us back the liberty lost over the last decade, the candidate that will follow Constitutional principles, the candidate that will ensure a fiscal future is going to have the most delegates at thae brokered convention. His supporters are not lazy, are not afraid, are organized to the hilt, and are storming these local, county ansd state meetings by swarms. We are getting delegate spots in every contest, does not matter who wins the contest. It is in the rules, it was rule changes made by the GOP in hopes of making it easier for Romney, but we are using those rules against the establishment. This is a R3VOLUTION, and where the first revolution was fought by only 25-30% of the people, we will accomplish the same here.
      Ron Paul 2012!

Or say out of one side of his mouth he’s a pro-life person, when in 96 he campaign with pro-choice candidate Arlen Specter (With signs in the audience saying “Republicans For Choice”). Or say he promotes smaller government yet doubles the size of it. Or say he hates the tea party and their values will asking for tea party support…….

@godluvnmom, I don’t think I have all the answers. That’s the point; I don‘t know what’s best for other people or countries. I believe the founding fathers had many answers and recognized their inability to determine what was best for anyone but themselves. One either believes people should do what they want (freedom) or believes someone should tell others what to do (tyranny). Is god proud of you for abandoning the “Just war” theory of Christianity? Also, I assume you’re one of those do-gooder social progressives who thinks the federal government should police vice? If so, let me give you a dose a reality. Your kids will know how to score by the time they reach middle school even with the War on Drugs. If they want to get high, nothing is going to stop them. Its up to you (me with my kid) to keep them drug free. Try to understand Ron Paul‘s policies really wouldn’t change anything except minimize violence. He does want to legalize anything, just decriminalize drugs at the federal level. Drugs would remain illegal everywhere they’re currently illegal. On a personal note, I’m with you on what I want for my child. I live my life as the bible commands. I think you’re being close-minded and gullible by letting the media influence you. I hope I reached you, but as I’m finding out, most religious zealots are unable to think for themselves.

      Misha,

I attempted to reply to this nonsensical accusation last night but for whatever reason, my reply wouldn‘t post and this is the first opportunity I’ve had to get back to it so……

Your opinion that I am voting based on emotion couldn’t be more wrong. I don’t make important decisions with emotion. The fact that I said it will “feel good” to write in Ron Paul, only explains that I’ve been voting GOP (since 1980) and have, many times, voted for a candidate that is dishonest, gives lip service to conservatism (but votes like a liberal), grows the government, (Ford, Bush 1 & Bush 2, and even Reagan) or is just a losing proposition from the start (McCain, Dole). For the past few years I’ve studied more American history, politics, philosophy, religion, economics, and the individuals running for the GOP nomination, than in all of the previous 30+ years combined. My support for Ron Paul is an extremely informed position and my vote will be educated and principled. The reason it will “feel good” is because this will be a very rare occasion for me – getting to vote for an honest decent Christian who is actually deserving of the office and whose actions will match his words. My candidate may not end up the winner, but this time I’m voting for the best man for the job. That’s not emotion, that’s principle. You partisans just don’t get it.

Love your enemies,do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one check, turn to him the other. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. DO TO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO TO YOU! Truth be told it is God who ultimately picks the president since He is Sovereign. America will get the president they DESERVE!

You got it PSA, I am a PIttsburgher, I know what a fraud and panderer Santorum is. What blows my mind most is how so many “conservatives” are being buffaloed by him. I guess I shouldn’t,back when I did a great deal of speaking, specifically, religiously, people tend to become amassed in the euphoria of eternal bliss as they have their religious convictions be validated by the person speaking. This often bothered me when speaking with people afterwards. While they thought they understood what I spoke of in spiritual terms, I believed they didn’t, at least not on a deep level.

Anyways, I grew up in Beaver County, on the edge of Butler County, where mister spoiled brat claims his roots as he uses his coal miner grandfather as a prop. My Dad worked the steel mills, I have labored this country, and particularly this tough landscape in the foot hills of Pittsburgh all of my life, I assure you, Ricki boy would be crying after a day of working with me. It annoys me that he trys to portray himself as part of us. I don‘t care that Romney isn’t because he doesn’t pretend that he is. If I confronted either of these mens, looked them in the eye, and told them how I felt, Romney wouldn’t get all huffed up and respect the fact I am a hardened worker. I seen Ricki boy get all huffed up and turn red as a lady confronted him and it got caught on camera. He has been about revenge for all the good ole boy picken on his spoiledbratty-know it all arse as a kid. WE don’t like his kind

Instead of using this next couple weeks to tear down santorum, lets keep the powder dry and hope that he is able to sink his teeth into the ‘romney inevitability’. Do you think romney is that much better than santorum? Personally, i would rather have santorum for a number of reasons.

Regardless, our best chance at making an impact is at the convention. At this point, a successful santorum campaign is the only way we can get there. Anything else will result in romney clinching the delegates

      Soybomb,
I have agreed with you on many things, but certainly not this. I find Santorum to be the most disingenuous of all of the Republican candidates. His big government voting record speaks for itself but maybe what is most offensive to me personally is that I find him to be a shameless panderer in using Christianity for his own glorification, self-promotion, and power. I will only vote for a Christian candidate – and I insist on a Christian who is humble.

I’m intent on writing in Ron Paul, but I have to admit that I have entertained the very slight possibility that I could be persuaded towards Romney – ONLY if he named Rand Paul as his running mate, AND offered Ron Paul a position like Treasury Secretary. This scenario is unrealistic but I can’t see anything else moving me from a vote for Ron Paul.

Mitt was in office for only a few years and managed to do a whole lot of bad things (you could say he was worse on a ‘per year’ basis). However, my biggest objection with romney is that he is funded by all the major banks and financial institutions. We both know they are the root of nearly every problem facing this country. I dont know how santorum feels about it – but arent we certain that romney is in kahoots with them? I dont like santorum’s denomination, but i get the feeling is more honest than the other two. i may be proven wrong in the end.

No matter what, we are screwed if one of the candidates wraps up the nomination prior to convention. Romney is the only one who can do it. So, i am focusing all my negative thoughts on romney. I will get my paul thoughts in where i can

You want to beat Obama? Then how does Republicans bashing each other for another 5 months equate to beating Obama?

Obama would love for Republicans to beat each other up for another 5 months. Everyday Republicans do that, they take their attention off Obama and the economy. You wanna give Obama a free pass for 5 months? This thing needs to end now. We must re-direct our focus on Obama and his insane policies. There is no Reagan in this race, so stop waiting. By the time I get to ballot in the primary I have very limited choices, but I do have choices. One is to waste my vote on a RepubliCrat, the other is to vote “Present”.

There is a General Election in November. I will not vote for a socialist! I WILL NOT vote for a RepubliCrat! I will not compromise my choice. Choicing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.

      Axelphantom,

It has nothing at all to do with ego. It is absolutely about principles. You may see a difference between Obama and Santorum (or Romney, Newt, etc. etc.) but I don’t. I see big government statists on both sides. Dishonest panderers out for their own glorification and power. They (the GOP frontrunners) are certainly not what is best for the future of this country. Listening to the three of them talk about themselves as conservatives when their liberal voting records are there for anyone who wants to see them, makes these liars as repugnant as Obama.
Americans’ freedom is circling the drain. We were once the most free country on the planet. We are now ranked 10th and falling.
      see here…
      http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking

My conscience – not my ego – could never support a candidate who favors The Patriot Act , NDAA, and so many other blatant attacks on the Constitution and personal liberty. If you are a Christian and support the federal war on drugs please read this article and tell me where the author is wrong…
      http://lewrockwell.com/vance/vance283.html

Along with our freedom, our prosperity is also circling the drain. Obama, Santorum, Romney and Gingrich will ALL continue spending us into oblivion.
