Santorum Wins Kansas Caucuses in a Blowout, Romney Looks Strong in Wyoming

(AP) — Rick Santorum won the Kansas caucuses in a rout on Saturday and Mitt Romney showed strength in Wyoming, the latest contests in the grinding campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.
Returns from 61 percent of Kansas precincts showed Santorum with 53 percent support, far outpacing Romney, who had 17 percent. Newt Gingrich had 16 percent and Ron Paul trailed with 13 percent.
Santorum’s triumph, coupled with Romney’s early advantage in Wyoming, were prelude to twin primaries in Alabama and Mississippi on Tuesday that loom as unexpectedly pivotal in the race to pick an opponent to President Barack Obama in the fall.
A total of 52 delegates to the Republican National Convention was at stake, 40 in Kansas and a dozen in Wyoming.
Romney, the front-runner by far in the delegate competition, padded his lead overnight when he won all nine delegates on the island of Guam and an equal number in the Northern Mariana Islands.
Romney began the day with 440 delegates in the AP’s count, more than all his rivals combined. Santorum had 181, Gingrich 107 and Paul had 46.
A candidate must win 1,144 to clinch the Republican presidential nomination at the national convention in Tampa next August.
In Wyoming, where some counties caucused earlier in the week, Romney had five of the 12 delegates at stake, Santorum had two, Paul had one, and one was uncommitted. Three more remained to be determined in party meetings on the day’s calendar.
Romney did not campaign in Kansas, leaving the field to Santorum and Paul.
Gingrich cancelled a scheduled trip to the state late in the week to concentrate on the two Southern primaries on Tuesday.
In sparsely populated Wyoming, there were 15 county conventions during the day to pick six convention delegates.
Kansas drew more attention from the White House hopefuls, but not much more, given its position midway between Super Tuesday and potentially pivotal primaries next Tuesday in Mississippi and Alabama.
Paul and Santorum both campaigned in the state on Friday, and Gov. Sam Brownback appeared with each without making an endorsement.
In Topeka, Paul told an audience of about 500 that Kansas should be a “fertile field” for his libertarian-leaning views but declined to say how many delegates he hoped to gain.
Santorum, who hopes to drive Gingrich from the race in the coming week, lashed out at Obama and Romney simultaneously in remarks in the Kansas capital city.
“We already have one president who doesn’t tell the truth to the American people. We don’t need another,” he said.
The former Pennsylvania senator told reporters he was confident “that we can win Kansas on Saturday and come into Alabama and Mississippi, and this race should come down to two people.”
An aide to Gingrich said earlier in the week the former House speaker must win both Southern primaries on Tuesday to justify continuing in the campaign.
But Gingrich strongly suggested otherwise on Friday as polls showed a tight three-way contest in Alabama.
“I think there‘s a fair chance we’ll win,” the former House speaker told The Associated Press about the contests in Alabama and Mississippi. “But I just want to set this to rest once and for all. We’re going to Tampa.”
Romney had no campaign appearances Saturday. The former Massachusetts governor won six of 10 Super Tuesday states earlier in the week, and hopes for a Southern breakthrough in Alabama on Tuesday after earlier losing South Carolina and Georgia to Gingrich.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 7:23pmRomney‘s more prepared because he’s never stopped prepping for this election since he dropped out in 2008. He also has the wealth to hire the largest campaign staff to go out and ‘buy’ delegates. He’s also been winning by running negative ads against his opponents … not because he’s the best candidate for the job. Romney plays just as dirty as Obama … so if you think things are nasty now … just wait and see what happens next. Obama will crush him!!! Santorum has a better chance because he winning on his merits … not his wealthy campaign.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 8:03pmThe reality is, Santorum is loosing because he was not prepared to win. Romney is winning because of preparation, strategy and execution. All traits that earned him millions of dollars in the real economy and will enable him to accomplish the huge task of shutting down government waste (oh yeah, something else he knows how to do well, and that by the way, Santorum, even when he had the chance in the Senate, doesn’t know how to do at all.)
Romney will mop the floor with Obama, because Obama will condemn himself , using his own words and his own record, (oh yeah, the same thing destroying Santorum and Gingrich now.) And let‘s not forget Romney’s record of creating and expanding Bain (Staples, Sports Authority, etc.), saving the Olympics (100 million deficit into 100 Million surplus), and turning Massachusetts around from a deficit to a surplus as well. As if selling his abilities to the American Public is going to be tough?
And one other historical note. In the modern era, when Republicans run former Governors (Reagan, Bush 43, and Ike (former Generals count as well) they win both terms. When Republicans run former Senators (Ford, Dole, McCain) they lose. The only Republican senators that have won (Nixon, and Bush Sr. were former Vice Presidents not just former legislators.)
The Answer is Romney. Take a deep breath, grieve the loss for a few moments and then refocus your attention on getting rid of Obama and Reid. They are the real problem. They should get your a

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 11:40pmSantorum lacks the emotional discipline to be president. Yes, he can be a passionate speaker, but a president should be – well, Presidential. Romney can think on his feet, yet remain calm and disciplined – and that will be needed when debating Obama. The only reason the Left wants Romney to run is because they assumed it would be him and set up this 1% straw man as the bad guy. Most people see through that though, and know they need someone who understands business to be in charge of the economy. He also appeals to the Moderates and Independents, while Santorum appeals to the religious conservatives. This is one of those elections where the religious conservatives do not have the winning issue. As Clinton once said: IT’S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!
If Mitt teamed up with Marco Rubio, he would do well with Hispanics and Floridians. Let Obama trot out that old Joe Biden….. When America sees the success and youth that a ROMNEY / RUBIO 2012 ticket would have, and compares that to what we’ve got in the White House now, the decision will be an easy one. But if we bring out a religious zealot, people will vote for the devil they know (literally)!

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 7:03pmI am convinced that Gingrish that there can only be two reasons why Gingrich is staying in the race- 1) his ego 2) to help Romney. In either case, they make me less likely to turn back to him. His southern strategy is failing. Georgia has been the only state where he’s placed above third place since early February, but then he lost Tennessee at the same time. If he wins every delegate from every remaining southern state he still wouldn‘t catch up to what Romney’s will be by the end of today. But in the process he’s draining votes from Santorum while failing to meet the minimums to get any delegates of his, basically giving those votes to Romney.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 7:00pmHere’s the funny part. We live in VERY rural Northeast Kansas. We would have had to drive 2+ hours in order to vote for any of the candidates listed. So, to me the vote that Santorum received was from the metro areas here in the state of Kansas. That does not even show what the rest of Kansans want. Our state is being driven by the metro areas that have no idea about what the backbone of Kansas really is and who is the backbone of this state (farmers). They don’t care if their regulations hurt the farmers and rural areas. They seem to think that food comes from the grocery store by magic. Once they destroy all us farmers by over regulation, fuel costs, etc…they will finally see that they should have listened to us in the first place. But, by then it will be too late. The really sad thing about all this is it will be the peons that suffer and not the upper crust. The upper crust can purchase $100/lb Kobi beef and us peons will have to forage and hunt for our next meal. America has become a very sad place. This is not the America I grew up in.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 4:10pmMARTINEZ. Yes, but Santorum “didn’t” have any Newsletters that he couldn’t manage. Just that one little teeny weenie tidbit of management ineffectiveness of Ron Paul‘s shows he can’t run a letter, let alone a country. I would go on, but don‘t want to sound like I’m doing a campaign commercial for Rick Santorum. He’s no danger to America, but Ron Paul and Obama are. I prefer to show why that is. Rick Santorum loves America. Ron Paul and Obama insult her and apologize to Islam for her.
