‘Satan Doesn’t Have Any More Authority’: Rangers’ Josh Hamilton Gives First Post-Relapse Interview to Pastor Robison on GBTV

Video follows below.

Touched by his story of addiction and road to recovery, Glenn Beck wanted the poignant story of Major League Baseball All Star Josh Hamilton to be told. During Wednesday night’s episode of The Glenn Beck Program on GBTV, Hamilton gave viewers a candid look inside his soul as he discussed his personal demons and the redemption he is now finding through faith, with Pastor James Robison.

Hamilton has struggled with drugs and alcohol for a number of years and although he was in recovery at the time, he confirmed suffering a slip-up with alcohol in early 2009. Most recently, Hamilton acknowledged that he had a “moment of weakness” at two Dallas restaurants in early February 2012.

In talking about his struggle with addiction and multiple relapses, Hamilton believes one of the reasons for his relapses is that he had yet to let God “take control” and release the troubles from his past.

Now confident that “Satan doesn’t have any more authority” over him or his life, an optimistic Hamilton ceded that he is not totally “fixed” and that the road to recovery will remain a process.

“I can always use prayer from people,” he said.

As the discussion progressed, the Rangers’ outfielder told Pastor Robison that he is learning from his mistakes and is, in essence, going through a “spiritual reprogramming.“ He added that he wants to let people into his world and even admits that he ”sucks” sometimes

Hamilton also revealed that he loves Jesus with all his heart but that there was “a long time I didn’t know Jesus.”

He said his main goal is to be a role model who, while not perfect, will forever strive to correct his mistakes, love Jesus and his family.
At the end of the day Hamilton acknowledges that he must continue to tackle the triggers for his addiction but realizes that his faith, love of God, his family and other people will be what sees him through the storm.
Watch the full interview below, it is nearly 30 minutes long. Shorter clips follow below, but the full interview is heartening and worth taking the time:

Below is a clip of  Hamilton discussing the media’s reaction to his addiction and living with the mistakes he has made:

The baseball star can also be viewed in a shorter clip speaking about his relapse. The video can be viewed here on GBTV

A clip of Hamilton speaking about his return can likewise be viewed by clicking here.

The All Star often speaks publicly about how Jesus saved him, placing an important emphasis on his faith. He wrote an autobiography titled, Beyond Belief, which explains his path to sobriety through the relationship he found with God.

“….he loves Jesus with all his heart…..” That’s a beautiful testimony.

Forget those times when you did not know Jesus…..you know him now…and that’s the most important thing. The more you know JESUS the more you will learn to love Him. And the more you love JESUS, the more you forget yourself, only JESUS you will remember. You will forget….that you “sometimes suck” and that you’re “not totally fixed”….for in embracing JESUS you have become a NEW CREATURE, the Scripture says…and you will come to believe in yourself again for HE has “totally fixed” you.

Here’s more about Jesus……and how beautiful HE is……

“And one shall say unto Him (JESUS), what are these wounds in thine hands? Then He shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.” (Zacharias 13:6)

The Sanhedrin and the Pharisees who were responsible for the events that led to our LORD’s crucifixion, and the Roman soldiers who nailed HIM to the cross…. JESUS continued to believe in them and His love for them never wavered…thus HE called them his FRIENDS.

And we begin to understand His willingness to be the Sacrificial Lamb….to die on that cross…for the sake of His FRIENDS.

Magical thinking is what athiests do well at. Believing that this complex world evolved from some cosmic soup: Now how stupid is that really. What do you see in this universe that created itself? Mother nature was created and is not the creator. No wonder the deniers believe in COSMIC soup, it’s what fills their head. Magical thinkers believe in things like aliens who come all the way to earth to hide from us terrible earthlings, who barely have the ability to put a man on the moon. With all their power and futuristic technology, why are aliens afraid of such unsophisticated, and unintelligent humans? I will answer this, because they don’t exist. God does exist and he is only an alien to those who reject HIS forgivness and grace and prefer to close their eyes.

Magic = witchcraft. It’s all over, these days, from Harry Potter showing kids how to be witches, to elaborate ‘spells’ cast on unsuspecting sheep (Madonna @the Stupor Bowl). If you think that was ‘just a performance’ you’ve got another think coming. The week‘s Satanic festivities culminated in the ’sacrifice’ of one of their own (Whitney Houston) and the ‘performance’ by schizo Nicki Minaj.

Satan doesn’t curse Christians, they curse themselves with trash like Harry Potter and Twilight, and current ‘pop’ culture.

A culture is what’s at the bottom of a petri dish, when you grow bacteria in a lab. Pretty much sums up our society.

KAdams, . . . I’ll give you the Twilight series, . . . . . . but Harry Potter doesn’t teach kids how to be a witch. That is pure fictional writing on Rowling’s part. Any kid who thinks that getting into Wicca will be like what they see in Harry Potter will quickly loose interest. . . seeing that it has nothing in the realm of similarity there.

How do I know? My brother and his wife are witches, and I have sat in on a few of their cerimonies. They were unappealing, to say the least. The only thing that was nice was the fire pit and a nice star filled night. I would have gotten the same if I were out camping.

But if kids are going to rebel from their parents and go into Wicca, or some other form of witchcraft, it isn’t going to be due to a book/movie series. There’s no incantations that will produce a ball of light [which would be SO cool], no “seeing into the future with divination”, even scrying or tarot cards are just a matter of chance.

      Just my 2 cents.

    THE REPORTER Speaks
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Several points here:

    # 1 (and most important) – As a subscriber to GBTV I didn’t know it was going to be another CBN. That remark has nothing to do with religious beliefs. It has everything to do with having religion shoved down the viewers throats, that’s not what everyone paid for !!

    # 2 – There is no doubt that Glenn Beck is frying too many fish. As a subscriber, I am ticked off because of Beck’s consistent absence from the show. He’s, downright, taking advantage of his subscribers. Too bad someone hasn‘t taken count on how many times he’s been on the show since Christmas.

#3 – It’s pathetic to watch a first class loser like Josh Hamilton offer his remorse over a habit that he himself decided to WILLFULLY undertake. It’s sickening to see a man, who made millions of dollars doing something that he loved, talk about how “sorry” he was and how he “failed.” He made, in one season, what most people will not see in their entire lifetime. We should feel sorry for him? You’ve got to be kidding. This jerk needs to grow up and get a life. He doesn‘t deserve the recognition he’s received. Period.

    # 4 – Pastor Robison was a fantastic host. Instead of Scott Baker, S.E. Cupp, Buck Sexton, those wanna-be news-people, Beck should have Robison MC the show when he’s gone. At least Rev. Robison is credible and knows how to conduct an interview, unlike those other st

Wow, how very judgemental of you. Calling J.Hamilton a loser.
I guess since the Rangers lost in the world series twice in a row, you might be able to make that argument. The fact that they got to the world series twice, kind of destroys that line of thinking.
If you are talking about his non-baseball life, I can only hope that you have never slipped before in yours.
Personally, I would be a much bigger fan if he stood behind the Rangers half as strong as they have supported him. Instead he is supporting his union.

You have a choice: read the article on Josh Hamilton or not.

This is a news site and they post and write different articles or perspectives. It takes courage to stand before millions and admit that you are a fallen person, that you are a sinner, that you have made tremendous mistakes that have caused hurt to your family (and fans).

John 8:1 —- Jesus said, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”

Considering the considerable amount of discussion regarding true conservatism, flip-flopping, and death bed conversions for our candidates, and its paralells with addicts converting to a clean life, and the evidence of an actual turning point, this interview makes perfect sense sitting on the shelf with everything else Glenn has to offer. As far as the religious elements to Glenn’s narratives, its not as if you there were indications GBTV would deviate from the norm on this one.

Glenn’s content representing a religious point of view is certainly in the range of normal, getting upset over something predictable however, is not.

#3? WOW, spot on. We’ve been through the- Kiss Josh’s butt thing before, I’m done.Handle this one privately, PLEASE!.

But, you didn‘t mention Glenn’s love for talking about alcoholism. He’s one of those types that think that THEIR cross to bear in life is THEE Cross of all crosses to bear.
Sorry, I‘m one that doesn’t believe a drinking problem is a disease. Unlike an eating disorder, though maybe not “disease”, is different in that you MUST eat. So I am TIRED of all this attention through alcoholism. Glen LOVES a former alcoholic! As a matter of fact, I do think Glenn said that “former alcoholics will solve the worlds problems one day”…..Ooo Kay.

#3- Thank you for that. Glenn can, at times, speak some WONDERFUL thoughts, but on the other hand is always just a heart beat away from being a real jerk. I, as well, always thought that these Clowns he has (the ones with the porno star names like, S.E. Cupp, Buck Sexton) try to ride Glenn’s coat tales, the (as you say) wanna-be news-people….are just that…ugh.

Glenn could get so much meaningful work done, if he would stop trying to sell his, and his friends, books 24/7 (Selling a book, in the USA, makes you an INSTANT multi-millionaire, that’s why EVERYONE strives to write one, and Glenn writes them like they’re going out of style). Luke 10:14-26 with focus on vs 24-26 & upcoming GBTV Josh Hamilton with Pastor Robinson–early we all where sharin & felt (by the Holy Spirit as he called me out on this) that this may help the ” non -addict ” gain a spiritual understanding. kjv Luke 11:24-26
” When the unclean spirit is gone out of a MAN, he ((that unclean spirit aka fallen angels-demon(s))) walketh through DRY places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith ((this is when “relapse or a SLIP Soberity Less ImPortant why we always must maintain a spirit filled life (Eph. 5:18) ))I WILL RETURN unto my house whence I came out.
vs 25 ” and when he cometh, he findeth it swept ((filled with the HOLY SPIRIT of the CREATOR)) and garnished ((spirit filled life under control & using 1 John 1:9))
vs 26 Then goeth he, and taketh SEVEN other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in ((when we not Holy Spirit FILLED)) and dwell there: and the LAST STATE of that man is WORSE than the FIRST.”
Father we praise you that Glenn has been spirit filled & we pray that he stays & we also pray for each other our families & frinds to do your WILL. Asking also for protection for all involved in this Spirit Battle. wE STAND UNDER THE BLOOD OF OUR risen Saviour & LORD Christ Jesus asking & believing in HIS NAME..the only name that evey tongue shall confess & knee shal bow, In Jesus name . I know… I love the fallacy that non-believers have about Christians…. that we all believe we walk around in sinless perfection.. Atheists couldn’t be further from the truth. If the commandments we TRY to live by are ‘too uppity’ and too much for a non-believer to handle, then all Christians suddenly become, to them, ‘holier than thou’. Gotta love the mass misinterpretation of our beliefs. Christians are usually the first people to know they themselves aren’t perfect, and that we never can be, in this life.

I have some advice that helped me get through my drinking (aside from the ER and realizing my 3 year old daughter could lose her dad)… is that it’s okay to be bored! It’s okay to lay around, BORED. It’s okay to be at a dinner or party, and be bored or boring. You DO NOT have to be the life of the party or the center of attention… It‘s lame anyway and real friends don’t care. So chillax, be bored, sit around, during those moments, and don’t worry about thinking you gotta be on the pulse or excited or exciting. I love just sitting around bored at night, relaxing, cozying up to some gbtv! And some cheese n crackers! Hey less calories then wine or drinks! & fiber too! ;) Praying for you.

I have a family full of addicts and growing up the way I was raised my parents expected we always had to be “doing something”…my family would comstantly call and say “what are you doing?” Everything had to be exciting all the time going, going, going,….I can really relate to what you said! Im changing that as u said. I don’t care what anyone says…I love doing nothing….

Very insightful! Thank you. I found that changing my life wasn’t really a “come to Jesus” moment, but a long process of reading, praying, studying the scriptures, and trying out the things I would learn. The hardest part for me was when I‘d be visiting relatives for Thanksgiving and see family members living a different set of values who couldn’t wait to end the family time so they could go out with their friends and start the “fun!” But I’m way over that now, like a decade, and I count my blessings and look at my children and husband and just want to hug them and thank the Lord. I’d rather be bored a million times with my family and have peace, then live one day of so called “fun” in the world. Remember that one of these days the wicked will be cut off and will have neither fun or pleasure in their works. I’m grateful I no longer have any desire to sin. Lord come quickly!

I wish him all the luck. He has the desperation and reaching for something to fill whatever is missing. I hope religion works, but if he ever lets himself doubt (reason), he’s a goner.

While all of us are sinners, the difference between us is who chooses to repent in word, thought, and deed and those who don’t.

I wish him the best. But staying off booze or drugs is a decision, pure and simple. Regardless of what is going around inside his head or nearby, he’s got to keep deciding to stay away. Everything else is window dressing!

you must be able to forgive yourself, then God will forgive you IF you are one of His Chosen.

I hope that i am one of the chosen. As a father, I can totally relate because I will only love those children of mine who give me proper admiration. The others I will throw in a fire.

      @JeanR,
Why do you follow civil laws? Are you just giving judges proper admiration?

Sorry, but there is NOTHING in the bible that says one needs to forgive himself. (I used to think there was myself, but there isn’t)

We ARE commanded to forgive others. No exceptions.

Repub, that’s not exactly how it goes. As long as you accept Christ, and understand your relationship with Him, then are you forgiven, by God. After that, you forgive others. Not yourself. As a Christian, in my own personal belief, I can’t forgive myself, I need Jesus for that. When it comes to other people, I forgive them, because Christ forgave me first. Who am I to judge other people, when I myself am far from perfect? Except for Christ, I deserve death and hell.

JEANR, God doesnt throw “other children” into the fire. He makes those who are not His own His, thus they escape the fire. It has nothing to do with whether or not YOU give HIM admiration.
