Saudi King Invites Ahmadinejad to ‘Extraordinary’ Islamic Solidarity Meeting in Mecca

The AFP is reporting that King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has invited Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to an “extraordinary” Islamic solidarity meeting in Mecca in mid-August, with the intention of “unifying the ranks” of Muslims.

The AFP adds a bit of background:
Tensions have been running high between the Sunni-dominated kingdom and Shiite Iran as both regional powers had taken opposite stances on the uprisings in Bahrain and Syria.
Iran had voiced support to a Shiite-led uprising in Bahrain which Saudi Arabia had sent troops to crush last year.
In Syria, the kingdom had called for arming rebels against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad — who belongs to the Alawite minority, an off-shoot of Shiite Islam — while Iran has been repeatedly accused of sending military aid to the Syrian government. Tehran has denied the claims.
But Saudi Arabia now is trying to promote unity within the Muslim world, and is reaching out to Iran in the process.

Commenters speculate what an alliance between Saudi Arabia and Iran would mean for the region. (Photo: Al-Arabiya)
“Strengthening the unity and solidarity of the Islamic Ummah [nation] is the summit’s main agenda,” Muhammad bin Ahmed Tayeb explained, saying they have made all the preparations to ensure the summit is a big success.
Commenters are divided on the significance of the invitation. Some say it is expected, while others are uncomfortable about the prospect of Saudi Arabia being an open ally of Iran.
“This is not good for Israel,” one AFP commenter wrote.
Another suggested the invitation is about “consolidating an Islamic power base…to influence political and economic policy on a global scale,“ and the ”finer points” of Shia and Sunni beliefs can be worked out later.

Posted on August 6, 2012 at 10:56amIs this the same Saudi King who visited President George W. Bush in Crawford in 2002 and 2005
Here is a paragraph taken from
http://www.saudiembassy.net/about/KingAbdullah.aspx
“On April 25, 2002, and again on April 25, 2005, Crown Prince Abdullah was received by President George W. Bush at the presidential ranch in Crawford, Texas. In 2008, King Abdullah twice hosted President Bush at the royal ranch in Jenadriyah, most recently in May when the president visited Saudi Arabia to mark the 70th anniversary of Saudi-US relations.”
And, of course there were the famous pictures of President Bush HOLDING HANDS with the Saudi Prince – in Crawford, TX. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/war_stories/2005/04/the_idealist_in_the_bluebonnets.html
And KISSING the Saudi Prince. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRhDzpJV2TM
I guess we shouldn’t have read too much into these stories – OR SHOULD WE??

Posted on August 5, 2012 at 11:55pmThe thing I don’t like about Europe is that they were a socialistic state when it was convenient for them, and now they are moving away from it, while trying to pour socialism on the U.S. So I’m kind of thinking they should be knocked out of their tree, finding themselves all naked under the fig tree. And God will have some garments available for them such as burqas.

Report Post »Mutiny
Posted on August 5, 2012 at 11:32pmSo from a Muslim standpoint the only thing to do is the “absolute destruction” if Jewish holy sites? How about if someone doesnt like Mormons they have the right to “absolute destruction” of Mormon sites? How about anti Catholics go after the “absolute destruction” of Rome? Ya get my point there Hit-Ler?
Point is, that isnt a solution. Extermination of a religion is wrong. The best way to deal with them is to leave them alone and protect our borders. By leave them alone, I mean cut them off. No aid, no money, no diplomatic help, nothing. Most Muslim nations are third world nations. They dont have modern armies and have little to no air force. They do not even have the logistics to operate effectively in their own region much less out side of it.

Posted on August 5, 2012 at 11:38pmNo, MUTINY, I’ll type small words slowly in (futile) hopes that you may understand. Destroying the Kaaba and its meteor that they worship does knock out one pillar of their system. However, it does not deal w/the inherent problem that islam is NOT a religion in the Western sense. It is an all-encompassing life system that dictates what to eat and how to clean yourself after the toilet. It’s that far into the weeds, making Mayor Bumblebee of NYC look like a rank amateur at making a nanny state come to pass.

Posted on August 6, 2012 at 8:00amMutiny; If I may quote Morgan Earp”With bugs there ain’t no live and let live”. You can leave them alone and they’ll still bother you, because thats what they do. You can say not all muslims are jihadist and you would be right, but one muslim will not go against another muslim for the sake of an infidel. I know this because I know many muslims. Their religion comes first above everything else. There are two sides to this problem, them and everyone else. There is no middle .That‘s the way it is and you can’t talk them out of it. And by the way, many religions that exisited in the past have been eradicated when the became trouble.Thugee in India in the 1840′s by the British, druidism by the Romans, who btw were very tolerant of other religions. When a religion became a danger to their existence it was stamped out, with Christianity they failed. Now,I’m not saying thats what we ought to do with islam , but it has happened before.
